EL PRESIDENTE WELCOME TO 2016! How excited are you right now! I’m fizzing at the hips I tell ya. I hope you all had an amazing break, but watch out, the year is just getting started and you are in for a pearler. This magazine is here to help you kick uni off with some serious style, so keep it close to you! There is a lot to tell you with not a lot of words (they told me that I talk too much) so I’ll keep to the essentials. The most important thing to remember is the UCSA is here for you! We are your Students’ Association and it is our job to help and support you. The UCSA pretty much does everything non-academic related. To find out more, ‘like’ our Facebook page, go to our website (ucsa.org.nz), and come see us (office entrance through the Undercroft).

Here is a picture of me at one of last year’s UCSA O-Week events looking loose af (bum bag is essential at all UCSA events)…

Secondly, figure it out! Uni is a whole different ball game to high school and these first couple of weeks are your chance to kick your feet under the table and figure out what this place is all about. Moreover, figure out what you actually want to get out of your time here. Is it to knuckle down and get straight A’s? Is to get more involved? Is it to meet a new group of mates? Whatever it is … now is your chance. Come for a chat any time, -James Addington UCSA President

If you’re new around here, then you probably haven’t heard of the UCSA. You probably just think we’re a UC department. But we’re not. That ‘S’ in there makes a big difference. It stands for STUDENT. And that’s what we’re all about.

We’re all about YOU. The Students Association does a whole bunch of things for UC students. If you read the rest of this magazine you’ll get the drift. If you can’t read, then all you really need to know is that if Abraham Lincoln was the UCSA President (instead of that Jimmy guy) he’d probably say something like:

“We’re OF the students, BY the students, FOR the students!” Then he’d probably high five someone.

STUDENT EXEC Every year UC students elect the 12 members of our UCSA Student Executive. The current 2016 Exec were voted in last year. If you stick around, you’ll get a chance to elect the 2017 Exec later this year. The UCSA Student Exec represent student interests on a variety of boards, councils, and… well… pretty much everywhere else. If you want to fight for something student-y around here, hit up the Exec. They’ll fight for you! Plus, they’re all fairly nice people. So feel free to say ‘hi’ if you see them at the Foundry or something.

WHAT THE UCSA DOES FOR YOU The Students’ Association is waaaaaaaaaay more than just the Student Exec. The Association employs around 200 people. Most of them are boring adult types. And they’re all here for YOU!

EVENTS & CLUBS This team organises all the big Students’ Association events on campus – like this little thing called Orientation. You might have heard of it. Plus they coordinate all 140 clubs. They’re very busy people…

ADVOCACY AND WELFARE If you ever have an issue with a lecturer, want support for an academic appeal, or need financial assistance to get through the year… this is the team to talk to. They work hard for students every single day. They’re like the superheroes of the office. They even do undies on the outside.

MEDIA The media team creates and runs all the online and offline media for the Association. Check out our Facebook. Follow us on SnapChat. Read this magazine. Thanks.

ADMIN & ACCOUNTS Every business needs the admin and accounts engine room. This UCSA team does all our financial heavy lifting as well as helping out with the monetary minefield that is running 140+ student clubs. They do it all with a smile. And give out free lollies. Bonus!

FOOD AND BEVERAGE These guys run the best bars and cafes on campus. And do everything they can to deliver you decent food at an affordable price. They also generate additional money for the Association through external functions and catering contracts. Gravy.

EARLY LEARNING CENTRES The UCSA has some of the best ELCs in Christchurch. If you’re a student in need of some top-shelf childcare, email childcare@ucsa.org.nz For more information on the Students Association and all the things we do, you can check out our... new website

and download our new app

FOUNDRY

Ever wanted to own a bar? Now you can

say you do!

Sort of… The UC Students’ Association (that you’re part of!) owns The Foundry bar – conveniently locat ed on the Ilam Road side of the main campus. The big black building. With ‘The Foundry’ written on it. That’ s it. The Foundry is pretty much the centre of stude nt social life at UC. It’ a pub, a nightclub, an even ts centre, a pool hall, a clubhouse… and sometimes it’s even a church. Seriously.

FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What is Orientation?

UCSA Orientation 2016 – Energised by V is a three-week festival of events and activities to welcome students to the new year at university. It is organised and run by the Students’ Association to ensure we kick this thing off right!

How do I find out about Orientation events? Funny you should ask – there is a full calendar on the very next page of this magazine! The best way to find out more is to check out our Facebook Event page. Just search for: UCSA Orientation.

Where do I buy Orientation tickets? All our tickets are sold through Dash Tickets – dashtickets.co.nz - we do not sell tickets at the UCSA reception. It’s all online now. This is the future!

I’m not a current UC student, can I still come? Even if you dont go to UC you can still come to some of our awesome events! ‘PLUS 1’ tickets are available to selected Orientation events. Just look for the options on the dash website.

What’s a PLUS 1? If you are not a UC student but have a friend who is a current UC Student, and over 18 you can buy a ‘PLUS 1’ Ticket for some events. You must show up at the gate together... or you could always try and make friends with a current student in the line :)

But I’m not 18? During Orientation 2016 you can attend The Outdoor Movie, Orientation Market, Clubs Days, and there will be some awesome club events happening. There is also a lot happening on campus during the sunlit hours of O’Week. All is not lost. Get amongst!

What’s a combo ticket? Combos are limited to current UC students only. And yeah, we’ll be checking that at the gate. They lower the cost of your tickets overall, so get onto them. 12 O-MAG: WTF IS GOING ON

What’s the deal with these booking fees? Are combos actually any cheaper? Booking fees have been added by Dash Tickets, but never fear, if you are buying a combo you will be spending less on booking fees than purchasing them all separately. Make sure you look through the combos and get the best deal for the events you want to attend.

I bought my ticket and now I can’t go. Can I re-sell the ticket? If you do have to pull the pin on an event, get in contact with us first. The UCSA does not recommend on-selling or buying tickets from others as we can’t guarantee they will work at the door.

When will online sales cut off? All online sales end one hour before the event starts, if the event has not sold out prior. As always, don’t be the one who left it too late.

Will there be door sales? Door sales will only be available if the event doesn’t sell out beforehand. If this is the case, both cash and eftpos will be available. As it is often unlikely there will be door sales, we recommend purchasing tickets early to avoid disappointment.

I haven’t got my Canterbury Card. Can I still attend? If you’ve got a few days beforehand, we suggest you get down to UC security to get a Canterbury Card. If you are a first year it is free! They’ll ping you $35 if you’ve lost your original card, but you’re going to have to do it anyway! If you’re still stuck, you can print your confirmation of enrolment with your name and student ID number on it and bring it with you to the gig. You will still need to bring your R18 photo ID.

I may have lost my R18 ID. Help! Check with us at UCSA reception and UC security for lost property. If it’s really and truly gone-burgers then you won’t be able to attend. This is the law – so don’t get mad at us! Remember HANZ18+ cards and current passports are also valid forms of ID.

I’m getting my full license so don’t have my ID right now. What happens now? The best option is to plan ahead and order a HANZ18+ card. Alternatively if you have a passport you can use that. If you don’t have photo ID, we won’t let you into the R18 event. Sorry … that one’s out of our hands!

What time do I need to be in the events before I can’t get in?

Info of a general nature... There won’t be coat check, phone check or any other form of storage of gear. There will be security checks and you may be frisked. Make sure you have a good place to store your ID as heaps go missing. Don’t put it down your pants... the bar staff really doesn’t want to touch that.. To attend the Orientation events as a UC student, you need to be enrolled for 2016.

The start time on the ticket is when the gates open. If you get in early you’ll get more bang for your buck. Tickets will be valid for two hours after the gates open. After that, it’s at the UCSA’s discrepancy. Don’t test our discrepancy.

Please take note of any Event Entry conditions outlined on your tickets and do yourself a favour and follow them.

What happens if it rains?

XX

Love, your Students’ Association

Keep an eye on our Facebook page to see the latest updates. It will only be under severe weather conditions that any of the events will be cancelled.

T R O SP C U T A Just because you’re at uni now doesn’t mean you have to start living a slovenly lifestyle of mid-morning informercials and late-night Nandos runs. There are plenty of sports (and generally healthy stuff) to do around campus. So put the spicy chicken wing down and get involved!

Rec Centre The Rec Centre has a full weights room, cardio machines, classes and trainers. And it’s FREE for uni students! Go online to sign up.

Sport Competitions Social Sport Competitions are FREE weekly 30-minute refereed games of basketball, dodgeball, futsal, netball, and volleyball held in the Rec Centre on weekday afternoons during term time. UC Sport Leagues (basketball, netball, and touch) are open to teams including both students and non-students. All games are played outside of lecture time on a weekday or weekend evening. Entry fees apply. If you’re in a Hall of Residence talk to an RA for info on how to represent your hall in the Interhall Sports Competition. FREE drop-in badminton sessions are held in the UC RecCentre Sports Hall - racquets and shuttles are provided. An Inter-Tertiary Sports Competition will be held for a number of sports in 2016, including: badminton, basketball, 3x3 basketball, hockey, netball (womens only) sevens, table tennis, and volleyball. Keep an eye on UC Sport’s Facebook page for news on how to get involved and support UC’s teams.

UC Sport UC Sport’s Athlete Development Programme is for members of premier UC Sport Club Teams, or individual athletes who compete at a provincial level or higher. Online applications open February 2016. Like ‘UC Sport’ on Facebook to keep up with the latest sporting news and events at UC. O-MAG: WTF IS GOING ON

UCSABUILDING T

he February 2011 earthquakes damaged the UCSA Building and after much analysis, discussion and thought the decision by the UCSA and UC has been made to demolish the empty building and create something new and fit for purpose. The old building was built in the 1960’s/70’s. So this year (2016) the UCSA Building will be demolished starting the middle of the year. The new build will start later in the year with an opening date around early 2018. It will be built on the existing site. In line with the UCSA’s mission of creating success and belonging for UC students, the new building will have something for everyone. Spaces will include an events centre, a Ngaio Marsh Theatre, meeting rooms for clubs and societies, rooms for job interviews including Skype facilities, a games room, a space for watching movies, a Foundry Bar, a Bentleys Bar, chill out spaces, an outdoor amphitheatre, and the UCSA offices. The new building will be jointly owned by UC and the UCSA and will be operated and managed by the UCSA. A fundraising campaign will kick off in 2016 to help finance the new facility. So over the next couple of years you’ll see the old being demolished and the new taking shape. Dave Hawkey UCSA CEO

owdy. My name’s Reverend Spanky, and I’m the Ecumenical Chaplain here at UC. Most people I meet nod their heads politely with that slightly glazed look when I’m introduced as “The Chaplain”. Well, I like to think of myself as the ‘Dean of Spiritual Engineering’ on campus. Us uni chaplain’s are pretty good at dealing with spiritual matters, but we’re also quite good at listening, baking scones, advocating, lingering handshakes, talking smack and growing basil. So if we can ever help with any of the above - just drop me an email. Anywho, be you an old dog returning for more academic adventures, or fresh meat exported from a local high school - on behalf of God, it’s my pleasure to welcome you to O-week at Canterbury. When I first became a cat owner I read somewhere that cats naturally self-regulate their eating. So I bought one of those smorgasbord style cat feeders - where you put the cat food in the top, and it falls out the bottom. Problem was our cat went from normal to a 6 kg monster within a year. At any given moment she would be crouched in front of this machine gorging herself. She would hug it, purr at it, lick it, nuzzle it, worship it. It became her food-god - a divine portal that produced infinite amounts of tuna-flavoured snacks on command. After a while (around the 5kg mark) we realised this dispenser was a bad idea, so we put it away in the cupboard. We would often come home to discover she’d found it, her head stuck inside it, pushing it along the ground in ecstasy. And for some of you reading this - that’s what your first year at uni will be like. After years of living under your parents regime

of free power and family scrabble nights - you’ll be flicking through the pages of this guide, wiping away tears of ecstasy from the share abundance of boozing and bonking opportunities. “I’ve always wanted an excuse to wear a toga!” you’ll say to yourself. “And besides, it’ll help me prepare for that Philosophy paper I’ve told everyone I’m taking.” But just as my cat discovered the hard way, going from limited freedom to infinite freedom in one week can be a pretty tough thing to navigate, without things getting messy. Now , many of you will choose to avoid the more colourful debauchery and will spend this week joyfully consuming crispy chicken from a cheap-n-cheerful Church corner establishment whilst going on a Settlers of Catan bender instead. Others of you will hit the jungle juice a little hard once or twice and wake up with a throbbing head, an empty bank account, and decide the novelty of cask wine has worn off. But some of you will really struggle to adjust to the smorgasborg of freedom that uni life offers - and so before you pin your stained bed-sheet around your postpubescent body and head to the Countdown liquor aisle - I invite you to ask yourself three “Hypothetical O-week Scenario” questions, so you can nut out a response before the heat of the moment get’s the better of you. 1. When you defecate in that elderly persons letterbox on Ilam Road, is that really the highest form of respect you can offer a pensioner? Or perhaps, if you try harder, can you think of other ways of showing gratitude for their age and wisdom?

2. When that next drink transforms you magically into a racist / sexist / misogynist, and you begin calling strangers with red hair cleverly offensive names - is that really a dimension of your personality you want to uncork in public? Or perhaps, like most University educated alumni, you’d like to hold to some kind of respect of people regardless of genes or genitals? 3. When you over-consume to the extent that you violate other people’s personal space, spit excessively while telling lame jokes, and fall asleep under a pool table before soiling yourself - is that really sending the signals to those of the opposite sex that this is someone with deep self-respect who believes deeply in the virtue of human dignity? You know, we live in an age where students and twenty-somethings feel huge pressure to do everything, all at the same time: party hard... but also, study hard! Write a novel... but also, write a thesis! Travel the world... but also, settle down and get work experience! As Jonathan Safran Foer put it “Sometimes I can hear my bones straining under the weight of all the lives I’m not living.” At its best O-week is a festive celebration of the future fruit of the year ahead: friends, frivolity, fried chicken. At it’s worst O-week is a messy attempt to escapes our self doubts and the pressure to be all things to everyone else. Most people experience O-week somewhere in the middle. So this year, don’t make the same excessive mistake my feline made with that cat food dispenser of doom. But do make the most of your first week of freedom at UC.

You can use the free UCSA app to view your UC timetable. You can also browse events and store your V-plate barcode. As well as a whole bunch of other stuff of dubious value at best.

What has two thumbs and built a new website over summer? This guy. Check it out. The new site has EVERYTHING you need to know about the UCSA, club events, campus news, and all the stuff the UCSA can do for you. And we can do a LOT for you. Especially if you bring cookies.

FACEBOOK PAGE

SNAPCHAT Yes, we’re on SnapChat. We’re also on YikYak… but it’s easier to get us on SnapChat. Add us now and we’ll give out some sweet prizes to the best snaps we get over Orientation. But no more genitalia. That album is full.

If you don’t ‘like’ our Facebook page you’ll have no idea what’s going on at uni. Absolutely NO idea. It’ll be totally embarrassing for you. And for everyone you love. So ‘like’ us. Totes ‘like’ us.

CLUBS GUIDE

We’ve got a network of screens around campus that’ll help you keep up to date with everything that’s going on. And sometimes we just play Dragon Ball Z. Because Goku is our homeboy.

We’ve gone to a lot of trouble to put together a Clubs Guide again this year. So read it. READ IT!

2016

Not really. Yet…

For the first time in a LONG time, our free campus magazine CANTA has a new student editorial team! They even got their own office by the Foundry. It’s got a toilet (with hand soap) and everything.

Shannon Costello Deputy Editor

Who knows what kind of magazine this new team will make? Maybe they’ll be awesome. Maybe they’ll be terrible. Maybe they’ll just take our money and play Candy Crush all day. We’re placing bets in the break room already. All we do know for sure(ish) is the first issue of CANTA 2016 is out March 7th 28 O-MAG: WTF IS GOING ON
