Welcome to Winterlude 2016! I am sure you are like me and are thinking how has this come around so quickly. But yes we are here, another semester, another blissful time at UC eating $2 pies and drinking instant coffee on level two of the lib.
UCSA has put together another epic calendar of events and activities to get you back into the uni spirit and to help you have a great time before exams start hitting.
It is set to be yet another crazy semester and please remember that the UCSA is here to help. If you are struggling or have ANY questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us. On another note at our Half AGM on the 20 July, we hope to introduce our new

EVENT: CUBA JIB
CUBA JIB Date: Wednesday 13 July Time: 7pm – 1am

CUBA Jib is back in all her glory, lining up to be one of the biggest nights of Winterlude. This year we have a new setup and a new mystery feature, so all you shredders had better get buttered up and ready! Jib promises to showcase some of NZ’s finest skiing and snowboarding talent, with some rad prizes lined up! El Presidente de CUBA, Daniel ‘Tug’ Hall, casually backflipped by to explain the ups and downs (and sideways) of jibbing. What exactly is a “Jib”? It’s a word a lot of people won’t have heard of. To jib is referring to the action of jumping, sliding or riding on top of objects other than snow. It is directly influenced by grinding a skateboard. Jibbing is a freestyle skiing/snowboarding technique of riding. Typically jibbing occurs in a Skifield terrain park (the bit with the jumps) but can also be done in urban environments. Describe the CUBA Jib for those who’ve never been. CUBA Jib is probably the raddest event that anyone could think of! We truck down a ridiculous amount of snow (100m3) from Mt Hutt and break our backs for eight hours putting it on a huge ramp with a rail and mystery feature set up on it for riders to hit. One of the coolest things about it is that it’s epic for anyone to come down and watch, not just those who ski or board. On the night everyone comes along to watch 4 WINTERLUDE SPECIAL EDITION
some rad skiers and boarders compete, showcasing their talents. Followed by a massive party inside once the comp is wrapped up. For those who have been before, what is different at Jib this year? This year we’ve had to shift the whole set up to half in the courtyard of the Foundry, half out. With that we’ve had to make some changes to make it all fit in to place, but we’ve ironed those out and it’s looking bigger and more spectacular than ever. Tell us about the riders at this year’s Jib. We’ve got some incredibly good riders here in Canterbury so there’s always a talented line up, with people also coming from the likes of Wanaka and Queenstown for the comp in the past. If you want to sign up to ride we only have a limited number of places, check our Facebook event for more info and the signup sheet. Tell us about the music and entertainment this year. This year we have some epic DJs lined up to get you cutting some serious shapes after watching Jib. We have some pretty cool stuff in the pipeline, so I can’t say too much at this stage, but there’ll be some happy chappies, plus MC’s Salt&Peppa
returning to spin some chat on the mic. What makes Jib such a special Winterlude event? Is it tacky to say our members? Haha. Nah, seriously it is, our members know how to party! It is one of, if not the biggest off the mountain jib contest in NZ, and our afterparties always seem to be a success if the amount of PDA on show is any indication. Give us a couple of pro tips for getting the most of Jib 1. Start earlier than normal so you can get here in time to watch some rad tricks getting thrown down. 2. Wear your knitted and fitted gears! Seriously, no one likes Danny down-buzz not dressing up, so get those turtle necks, David Bain jumpers, and Christmas uglies out and on show. 3. Get ready to go the long haul. It’s a big night, so pace yourself a little bit (I sound like a nana) so you can be raging on at the end with us rather than kicked out and trying to sneak back in.
EVENT: CUBA JIB
JIB SET UP 1) The basic ramp set up is built of scaffolding from a local company. It normally takes six guys working full time three full days to put together, but we’re doing it in two this year.... just for kicks. The rails are pulled out of storage at our top secret location, dusted off, and bolted on. 2) This year we have included a new feature. It’s going to be saved as a surprise for the night (or not, we’re pretty bad at keeping secrets) and should provide some extra excitement for both those watching and competing. 3) We ship in 20 tonnes of snow from Mt Hutt. It comes on two truck and trailer units. The snow gets dumped in a big pile next to the ramp, and that’s when we start shoveling. 4) Shoveling the snow onto the ramp takes 20 volunteers around eight hours of procrastination, toil, and shit chat . It’s back breaking work. The snow has to be heaved up onto the ramp by one team, and then smoothed out and compacted by another team. 5) This is where it starts to get fun! “Testing it” before all the competitors arrive. 6) Run the event, WOOOOO!!!!! 7) Pack up while severely hungover/possibly still cooked from the night before
HISTORY OF THE JIB
Jib started way back in 2007. Things were a lot more simple back then, set up in the courtyard of the old UCSA building next to the stream. It was a more informal affair. The earthquakes were the catalyst for Jib becoming so large, forcing us to set up in the (then new) Foundry car park. it was a natural progression to a bigger and better event each year.

an interview with - STATE OF MIND Patrick Hawkins and Stuart Maxwell are the drum and bass duo behind State of Mind. The two first began working together in Auckland as far back as 2004. State of Mind have currently released four studio albums and one live album, as well as recently signing to the record label Blackout, who represent Black Sun Empire. We caught up with them ahead of their set at Winterfest. For UC students who might not be familiar with your work, how would you describe your music? SoM: Well basically we make drum and bass, generally leaning away from the generic BBQ stuff and more towards the heavier bogan side. How did you get involved with the Blackout music label? SoM: A group called Black Sun Empire run Black Out. They are from Holland, and basically we became friends from touring over there. Their label is one of the biggest in Europe at the moment, so signing with them has been a good move for us. Our last record ‘Eat the Rich’ picked up album of the year at the UK DNB Arena awards which was pretty cool. Normally acts from outside the UK don’t get much of a look-in. So yeah it’s nice to work with them
because they are friends first and foremost, label bosses second, and they run a tight ship. What is one memory or moment that stands out from your career so far and why? SoM: Maybe our first time playing EDC in Las Vegas a few years back. That was pretty epic. 180,000 people per day for 3 days. Vegas vibes in full effect. It was a serious 72 hours... Who are your biggest influences - and who would you like to work with in the future? SoM: Personally I try to avoid taking too much influence from other acts in drum and bass. We just sort of focus on making what we think sounds good and enjoy playing out. Beyond drum and bass, all sorts of acts are influential in various ways. Literally anything from Tool to Nine inch Nails to Eric Prydz could spark some idea we apply to the music we make. Have you performed at UC before? What are you expecting from WinterFest? SoM: Yes we have. No idea what to expect from WinterFest to be honest. A bad hangover maybe? By Cassandra Brocherie WINTERLUDE SPECIAL EDITION 9

an interview with - SIKDOPE With songs such as Unicorn Zombie Apocalypse, there is no wonder that Sikdope is one of the most entertaining producers in the game right now. Having spent nine years at one of Poland’s top music schools, Sikdope is able to channel a broad range of EDM into something truly special. Currently in the middle of his ‘Snakes’ world tour, Sikdope will be dropping into Winterfest to see what Christchurch is made of. While studying in Poland, who were you listening to the most and are they still influencing your music today? SD: When I was younger I listened to a lot of rock and metal. Because I was attending a music school for nine years, classical music had been huge part of my life too. It definitely has had a huge impact on my productions. If you look closely to a structure of some modern genres of electronic music, for example Dubstep, you may hear many similarities to metal music in the drum patterns etc. So I think there are no boundaries nowadays with creativity and mixing many styles together. Your current Snakes world tour spans over four months, how do you keep yourself hyped up for that long? SD: If you really love what you’re doing, spending four months on tour is only a pleasure. Obviously after a while you’re going to miss home and your friends - that’s why I think that staying healthy, physically and mentally, is really important. I always try to work out when I have time, and eat relatively healthy. Meeting your fans all around the world helps too because you know what you’re doing has a purpose. Seeing such huge support on each stop of the tour makes you want to work even harder. Where has been the most exciting place to play so far, what has made it so exciting? SD: I think that each place around the world has something special in it. It doesn’t matter if you’re playing huge festival or a small club party, wherever I feel good and I feel good energy is where I want to be at that moment. The songs Space Kitten Invasion and Unicorn Zombie Apocalypse have to be some of the more interesting song titles floating around the scene, what was the creative process in coming up with these names?
SD: We wanted to show that you don’t always have to be so serious in the industry, and that making music should also be fun. That’s why we made those song titles. These songs were made with the producer Borgore, if you could collaborate with any artist you wanted who would it be and why? SD: I would love to collaborate with Skrillex or Flume. Those guys have always been big inspirations to me music-wise, and I think they are the most talented producers right there out now. What are you expecting from the crowd here in Christchurch? SD: I know that Christchurch is going be amazing. What I really love about New Zealand and Australia is that you guys are really openminded to all genres of music. What should those that are attending this years’ Winterfest expect? SD: My sets are always really energetic, so I know we’re going to a have a great time with good music and great vibes.
WINTERFEST PRESENTS - GENTLEMEN’S CLUB Ever since the Gentlemen’s Club formed in 2013, the UK-based trio have proved unstoppable, breathing new life into the global dubstep and bass scene with edgy hip-hop and grime influenced bangers. a BIO OF - GOLDEN FEATURES The wonder that is Golden Features first appeared behind his golden mask in 2014. With his first EP reaching over one million listens just six months after its release, Golden Features entered the global dance music scene at break neck speed. A small slot on Triple J soon lead to InTheMix naming Golden Features as one of their Top 25 producers, MTV Australia marking him as a top artist to watch, and even the national Times newspaper in South Africa ran an exclusive. Two years later and with an album on the way, the mystery behind the mask will be appearing on the main stage at this year’s Once Upon a Time. an interview with - CHORES when we signed with Sony. Telling Lies is the first in a series of singles you will hear throughout the rest of the year and next. You now have a guest mix spot every second Saturday on George, how important is radio for the exposure and success of Chores? Chores: We don’t really see it as a platform to grow the brand as Chores, rather it’s just a chance to play some songs we like and have a good time. Plus George are really supportive of us, so it’s nice to be supportive back. How do you find working as a duo: who usually takes the lead on projects, and are there ever any disagreements on the creative direction? Auckland based Electronic music duo Chores, consisting of Sam Saunders and Thom Simmons, formed in 2013. Having had early success with their debut single they have continued to impress, most recently with their catchy house tune Telling Lies. Make sure you’re on the D-floor when Chores hit Once Upon a Time this Winterlude! “Telling Lies” gained some great reviews from the likes of Sniffers and This Song Slaps, do you have any more projects planned for the near future? Chores: Yeah, we were already sitting on quite a lot of material
Chores: Nah, it’s all smooth sailing. We have pretty definitive roles. What are some of your favourite things about the New Zealand music scene right now? Chores: It’s so supportive. I feel like it used to be rather cutthroat, and there was this mantra that NZ was so small that there could only be one or two big artists. However, with this new wave of producers, ie Stack and Piece, Sachi etc, it seems like a family. Much more of an Australian feel. Have you played down in Christchurch before, and what are you expecting from the crowd at Once Upon a Time? Chores: I’m actually from Christchurch. We have played here a few time for club gigs, but nothing big like this.
An interview with -TEAM DYNAMITE When you think of New Zealand hip hop, Team Dynamite is one of the names that should immediately leap to mind. The dynamic duo of Lucky Lance and Tony Tz hold it down on stage together like a Samoan Bert and Ernie. Their dystinctly Kiwi style is driven by the lovable Haz Beats – meaning these boys are sure to get you up for a boogie! There is something special about kiwi hip hop and rap, who are some artists in New Zealand that you boys draw inspiration from? TD: The whole YGB, Che Fu, Ladi6, SWIDT. How did you guys end up teaming up? What’s the group dynamic like? TD: Meet in school. Whole lot of positive energy that’ll turn your low into a high guaranteed! If there was any other artist in the world you could add to your trio, who would it be and why? 14 WINTERLUDE SPECIAL EDITION
TD: Willie Wes and Hone Be Good because they’re our HD brothers. Always got to look out for the brothers. And they’ve both got ill bars for days. Trust! What drives you to make your music, what is one thing you’d like to say you have achieved with your music? TD: The thought of working a 9-5. I’d like think we have achieved a good reception with our music. Whats something you guys are looking forward to when you play at Once Upon a Time? TD: You don’t wanna know mate. By Tom McArdle

It’s time for you to gear up and head up the mountain for a gnarly week of learning how to slay pow at CUSSC’s awesome lodge. Professional ski instructors (may be experienced students who can ski instead) will be up there to help you out and give you some lessons. Not to fear all you semi-professional snow bums, it’ll still be an awesome weekend for you to get amongst and cut some fresh lines. Who are CUSSC? CUSSC are the Canterbury University Snow Sports Club, and we are raddest club on campus. What makes Learners Ski Weekend such a great Winterlude event? It’s a great way to learn a rad new sport and introduce new people to the club. Not to mention do it at less than half the price of other ski fields. The fact that we own our own lodge up the mountain creates a friendly student environment and makes Temple Basin a home away from home. See CUSSC’s Facebook event page for more details.
TIPS
Tip 1: Organise your gear in advance. Post on the transport forum if you are wanting to hire/borrow gear from fellow club members. We are sponsored by Gnomes, meaning cheap gear is just a quick stop away for those who need to hire equipment. Tip 2: Make the most of the social atmosphere. It’s a great way to meet some awesome people and make new friends. The club loves to get to know new people and there’s always a rad party after an epic day on the slopes. Tip 3: Bring snakes, lions and anything else you want to eat. But seriously, bring snacks and drinks for the Saturday night. Tip 4: Don’t be afraid to ask for help or tips, especially if you are not sure about something. CRUSADERS VS HURRICANES WITH THE CANTABS Date: Saturday 16 July

The Crusaders are most successful Super Rugby team ever, and they’re back to their very best in 2016! This event gives Canterbury students a chance to experience the pride and passion of Crusaders rugby at the legendary fortress AMI - at a significant discount. Plus you get free transport to and from the game. Your hosts for the evening are UC’s very own Cantabs Student Supporters’ Army. All credit to Cantabs President, Abbey Topham, for taking us up the guts on this one. Q1: Who are the Cantabs? Cantabs are a student supporters’ army (and a UCSA affiliated club) with a strong focus on Canterbury sport and great chat. Q2: What’s this Crusaders vs Hurricanes event all about? This Winterlude game is the last guaranteed home match for the boys in red and black. They have been having an absolute humdinger of a season and this event is all about getting behind our team. Q3: What’s the schedule on game day? On game day the plan is to roll down to The Foundry at 3pm, where there will be plenty happening to get you Bank stand-ready. There will be Cantabs overalls with stenciling and customisation facilities, face painting, and The Foundry will be putting on a few food and drink specials to keep morale and energy levels high. From there we jump on free buses and head to AMI. The plan is to then bring the Bank to life with some chants and quality banter. Q4: Who should think about coming along? This event isn’t just about the game being played, it’s about being part of a student community and having a great time doing it – the footy is an added bonus. So if you’re not all that into rugby, you should still come along, there is plenty happening down on the Bank stand other than code. The avid footy fan should already have the date circled, their ticket money set aside, and their kit ready to march on AMI. Q5. What makes this trip to the footy such a great Winterlude event? It’s a chance to snap an excellent selfie, give your ears a rest from the doof doof, and get out and about as a Canterbury student and see some Canterbury sport. This event is all about helping you stay happy and healthy this winter. There’ll be a thrift shop (everything is a gold coin donation), and free tables of clothes, household items and children’s items. There is also a spiritual corner for anyone who needs a listening ear. The Advocacy & Welfare team will be there to provide advice to students, or at least point them in the right direction. Emily Barker is the Student Wellbeing rep on the UCSA Exec. She also has a sweet nose ring. What is the idea behind this Winter Wellness event? The winter blues is real. Exam results have been released; students are in the middle of the academic year. It’s cold and dark, financial pressure is high, and illness and fatigue are common. With all this going on, it is easy to sacrifice your own wellbeing to keep up with expectations. However, health needs to be a priority. It affects your work, and your quality of life. Eating healthy, getting enough sleep, and taking time to relax takes extra effort. Focusing on ourselves can also make us feel guilty, especially in New Zealand. The Advocacy and Welfare team at the UCSA, along with OpSoc and other groups want to make this time of year easier for you, and remind all students that your wellbeing must come first! What are some of the things students can expect on the day? 22 WINTERLUDE SPECIAL EDITION
We are transforming the Undercroft into a Wellbeing hub. For those that are missing grandma, we have sewing machines set up for students to bring in clothes that need to be mended. I flat with boys and am constantly being asked for buttons to be reattached, or ripped pants to be sewn back together! AMI will be there to help students with any insurance queries, as well as CEA to give information about energy use, ways to keep your flat / home warm, and free curtains from their Curtain Bank. A health and beauty stall will be another reminder that it’s good to take time for yourself, providing hand and shoulder massages. Check out all the free stuff and giveaways! If students need additional support and financial assistance this winter, what can they do? Students that are struggling financially can apply for Hardship Grant, or the Mickle Fund Loan through our Advocacy and Welfare team. We also have a food bank to help students that are struggling to afford groceries. Our Advocacy and Welfare team can be contacted for confidential support and advice for anything you are struggling with – whether it is academic, employment, or tenancy related.
The UCSA has a subsidised dental service that will only set you back $25 for a checkup – book online ! Christchurch Budgeting Services offers a lot of financial information for students. The UC Health Centre provides free counseling for students, and the Disability Resource Service supports those with disabilities.

THRIFT SHOP BY OPSOC President of OpSoc, Hugh Baird, tells us how to stay warm AND look hot this winter. Who are OpSoc? We are the Op Shopping Society! We are here to stimulate passion for wearing second hand clothes and to help you guys enjoy things on the cheap. We are all about a good time in weird clothes, bringing some of the most unique events to campus. Why did you want to be involved in the Winter Wellness event? OpSoc has a love for anything free or dirt cheap, and the Winter Wellness event has plenty to offer. With the event being about keeping the students happy and warm on a tight budget, OpSoc felt like we had something to offer. What will you be doing on the day? We will be setting up our opshop where everything is just a gold coin donation. If you have any items you wish to donate, bring them down and you could walk away with something fresh for free. Why do you think students should come along to the Winter Wellness event? With most of the good opshops in Christchurch being nowhere near campus, the casual thrifting mission can be more trouble than it’s worth. We’ve got you covered this time round as we’re bringing it all directly to you. No complaints about the free food or Ribena either. Great for nursing any nasty Winterlude hangovers and for keeping you going. It’s a big week, you’ve got to keep your fluids up.

Gidday. My name’s the Rev Spanky Moore, and I’m the uni chaplain around these parts. You may not have noticed, but ‘Wellbeing’ has become all the rage of late. But what the hell does being ‘well’ even mean? “Look, I’ve had my flu jab already!” I hear you say. “Now give me some free pancakes and leave me alone!” Not so fast. Maori have a great way of naming the four big aspects of healthiness that it takes for human beings to flourish: good physical health, good mental health, good relational health, and good spiritual health. Now for most of us it’s self evident that
those first three make a lot of sense. But it’s the last one that makes many students, and particularly Pakeha, awkwardly shuffle their feet. I’ve heard more engineering students than I can count ask me: “So, what does spirituality even mean?” And during Winter Wellness that’s what I’ll be trying to help people answer at my mysterious and magically Ask the Chaplain Anything!™ stall:

MONO nights are back, and we’re kicking off term two with a Winterlude special presented by our old mates at ZM - a ‘tropical party’ featuring Jupiter Project. As usual it’s free entry, but chuck on a hawaiian shirt and get there early!
JUPITER PROJECT For those who might not be familiar with Jupiter Project, how would you describe your style: JP: A lot of people use alt/pop electronic to describe our music. We don’t really mess with genres though. Why describe music when you can just listen to it. People can call it whatever they want. We just called the sound and style ‘Jupiter Project’. How does it work between the two of you? What are each of you bringing? JP: We’re pretty open format in the studio. We both write and produce music so it’s constant collaboration and sharing of ideas till we get a finished produce we’re happy with. You guys have over 40,000 likes on Facebook. Not too shabby! What’s your secret? JP: Haha thanks. Not too sure if it’s a secret, but consistency is key. We’ve been creating together for over four years now. So not exactly over night, but the last year or so has been pretty crazy. What’s been the highlight of your careers so far? Feel free to disagree with each other! JP: Definitely playing our festival shows in Paris and seeing thousands of Parisians singing songs we wrote in Grey Lynn, Auckland. Another would be playing our first Rhythm and Vines festival. We set a goal when we first went as punters that the next time we go we’d be on stage. And we were right.
Speaking of highlights, are you looking forward to playing the mighty Foundry?! JP: Yeah for sure! The Foundry was one of the first venues we ever played out of Auckland and we’ve played a few times since. In fact, the year The Foundry collapsed from people jumping, we were the act that had just played! It’s always a wild night when we return to Christchurch! The new UCSA representation model we hope to introduce at the HAGM will include the following General Exec positions. Postgraduate Representative: Requirement: Must be a postgraduate student in the year they’ll take office Postgrads represent over 2,000 of the universities population and have very different needs than that of an undergrad. Any PG you talk to will go on and on about how much different it is than undergrad. Different work load, different stress levels and a way larger adult student population. Equity and Wellbeing Representative: No Requirement other than passion for the role: A position aimed at those who are passionate about working towards a more inclusive campus, and helping those groups such as LGBT+, mature students, international students, students with disabilities, and other groups through chairing the SWAG (Student Wellbeing Advisory Group). Note that we are looking to change SWAG to EWAG (Equity Wellbeing Advisory Group); we thought SWAG was a little too hip of
a slang name. For those of you who aren’t familiar with SWAG, it’s a group of appointed representatives from both minority and majority factions of Uni that feed advice and ideas to the UCSA Executive around inclusiveness. The Equity and Wellbeing Representative will also sit on the UC’s Central Equity and Diversity Committee ensuring that the diverse student voice is heard by all of university and we continue to strive towards making a campus where everyone can succeed and belong. Maori Representative: Requirement: Te Akatoki President or nominee We are bicultural nation living in a multicultural world. We want to respect that in the clearest way possible by ensuring the Māori voice is heard at the UCSA table. We recognise as Te Akatoki as our sister association and the best possible voice for Maori students. Who are the Gaming Guild (tell us about yourselves)? UCGG is a club run for gamers by gamers. We provide a variety of video gaming events on campus for a variety of different gaming styles. We run many events over the course of the university year including our PC LANs, tournaments for games like Hearthstone, League of Legends, DotA2, Counterstrike, Halo and fighting games. We also hold “Freeplay” events where anyone is free to drop in and play games like Guitar Hero and Mario Kart throughout a day, as well as Retro Gaming nights, Quiz Night and Horror Gaming nights. If this sounds like you, come and join us! Membership is free! What’s this event all about? The Winterlude DotA2 LAN Tournament is a gaming tournament run in association with Compsoc - the University of Canterbury
Computer Society - where participants will be playing the computer game DotA2 in a double elimination style tournament. In addition to the main tournament event there will be friendly competition matches and other chances for participants to win prizes going on throughout. We will also be running a spectator room with casters and streaming the event live on twitch.tv for people at home to watch! Who can get involved – what do they need to bring? Anyone who is a keen DotA2 player is welcome to enter the tournament. Entries are limited to 16 teams of five, so you will need to find some teammates keen to enter too.
