FRESH START, NEW BEGINNINGS By: RenĂŠe Dell'Acqua, MPH

The start of the year is often seen as a time to set new goals, resolutions, and intentions. And while that can be the case, let's not limit ourselves! View each and everyday as a fresh start and new beginning! As we wake up each morning, we are presented with a beautiful opportunity to grow, heal, and progress. Here are some goals and intentions we can set forth each and everyday - no matter the time of year! Which of these resonate with you? Select all that apply.

Implement time management techniques to save time and prioritize and complete tasks. Connect with positive and nurturing people. Take time to heal from current and past hurts, asking for support when needed. Feed your mind with positive and encouraging thoughts. Take an honest and brave look at your finances and spending. Be appreciative of how far you have come. Let go of judgments about others and yourself. Take courageous steps in creating the life you truly want to live. 5

MOMENT TO REFLECT By: RenĂŠe Dell'Acqua, MPH

When life feels like it's moving at lightning speed, it becomes easy to miss opportunities to slow down and reflect on life, your experiences, and yourself. Take a moment to practice a moment of self-reflection. What are the words I want to live by?

What inspires me most?

When do I feel most proud of myself?

LETTUCE TALK NUTRITION! By: Christine McNamara, RD

New Year – Same Message: Keep making small lifestyle changes to reap big rewards. Just because it is a new year, does not mean you have to have unrealistic expectations. When making dietary changes whether it is a new year or not: start small and set a few realistic goals. This will lead to better self-esteem and more self-confidence because you’ll actually stick with them. Willpower is not the issue. Willpower is about depriving yourself, which is depressing and can lead to overeating and/or binge eating. Remember balance. Be sure to include all three food groups (protein, carbohydrates and fat) at meals and snacks and eat a variety of foods weekly. Lastly, Focus on the positives – you will feel better, have more energy and not feel deprived when you eat a balanced meal plan.

HAPPY EATS! 8

How Do You Identify? Using the lower section, place an X on each line you see below (each has 2 lines). Some X-marks may be at the far left, some may be on the far right, or they might be somewhere between. Think of all the amazing possibilities!

Our sense of "self" is much greater than any one characteristic, and is a mix of qualities that make up "you."

BE TRUE TO YOURSELF Every one us has a unique way to identify, show romantic or sexual interest, and express ourselves.

In 2021, love ALL of yourself!

HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT ABOUT WHY YOU USE SUBSTANCES? By: Christine Glissmann, MS

Hello! ATOD Health Educator and Collegiate Recovery Coordinator here, Christine Glissmann. I just wanted to drop in and see if you have every thought about why you choose to use substances. When I say the word substances, I mean anything that alters your mood, cognition, or physical state. This could include your cup of coffee in the morning, nicotine from vaping, alcohol, cannabis, etc. The reason I think it is important to have these reflections is because our beliefs or expectations of our use can have an impact on how much and how often we use. For example, if you are consuming alcohol to feel better aka cope after a stressful week of finals, relationship drama, etc. you are more likely to to engage in heavy use and experience alcohol-related problems (e.g., injuries). This can also be true with the other top motivations for use, which include: to perform better, to feel good, to fit in, curiosity, and like we just discussed, to feel better. 10

Reflect on the statements listed below. Each substance could have a different motivation, so keep that in mind. Because it helps you enjoy a party To be sociable To celebrate a special occasion with friends To forget your worries To cheer up when you are in a bad mood Because you feel more self-confident and sure of yourself To forget about your problems Because you like the feeling To get high Because it's fun Because your friends pressure you to use So that others won't kid you about not using To fit in with a group you like To be liked So you won't feel left out If you are curious about your use and want to discover ways to reduce harm or to abstain completely, you can reach out to me, Christine Glissmann, at cglissmann@health.ucsd.edu, and schedule a 1:1 substance use chat or to learn more about the Collegiate Recovery Program (CRP). Check out the next two pages to learn about CRP and our Recovery Ally Training! 11

ART & SOUL

FOCUS WORD OF THE YEAR At the start of every new year, it's no surprise that many people make resolutions and create goals they want to accomplish this year. "New year, new me" right? We want to share another way we are embracing this inspired feeling by choosing a focus word of the year. A word that will help set your intentions for the new year and focus on a theme you want to embody through out the year.

CHOOSING MY FOCUS WORD REFLECT on the past year and think about what you want from this new year. What do you need more of? How do I want to feel? VISUALIZE what makes a good year. What are things that you want to happen this year? What do you want to see? What do you want to experience? WRITE it down! Think of any word that pops up, create a list you can filter through. REVIEW your list and reflect on each word. Focus on each word and how they make you feel. Which word makes you feel inspired or feel good? Which word feels right? COMMIT to the word. Now that you've chosen your word, create any craft you like so you can display it and it will be a reminder to refocus on your word whenever you need it. You can paint it, do a string art, put together letter blocks, and more! Have fun with it!
