PATTI GERCKENS Head Coach 19th Season

P

atti Gerckens enters her 19th season as head coach of the UC San Diego softball program in 2011, having guided the Tritons to the NCAA West Regional for the fourth time in nine seasons at the Division II level two years ago. She enters the season with an overall record of 440-420 in her 18 years on the La Jolla campus, boasting 321 more wins than any other coach in program history. Since guiding the team’s transition from Division III to Division II in 2001, Gerckens has accumulated a 292-256 record while competing as a member of the ultra-competitive California Collegiate Athletic Association, widely considered the best Division II conference in the country. In CCAA play alone, Gerckens has accumulated a 172-149 mark over the last six seasons. Last year, UCSD compiled an overall record of 30-20, which stands as the program’s highest winning percentage (.600) since the 2001 campaign brought a 34-17 mark. The Tritons won 15 of their 18 contests in the month of March, peaking at the Tournament of Champions in Turlock, March 26-28, by earning a spot in the Gold Bracket. In 2009, the Tritons recorded their second-ever NCAA postseason victory, knocking off CCAA rival Cal State Monterey Bay, 2-1. UCSD’s 30-25 season, which ended with a 4-3 loss to Hawaii Pacific, featured Gerckens’ career victory No. 400 - a 6-4 win over Grand Canyon at the Tournament of Champions on April 4. The 2009 season represented the third straight season of both NCAA playoffs and more than 30 wins. In 2008, Gerckens’ squad finished with an overall record of 32-24 and 15-17 in the CCAA to advance to postseason play. The Tritons lost a 6-4 decision to Cal State Dominguez Hills on the first day of regional play, before falling to eventual national champion Humboldt State, 3-1, to end the season. A breakout season in 2007 propelled UCSD to its second-ever berth in the NCAA West Regional after the Tritons posted a 35-27 record during the regular season. Third-seeded UCSD recorded a hard-fought 1-0 victory in the opening round over Sonoma State, but Gerckens’ squad suffered back-to-back heartbreaking losses to second-seeded Cal State Stanislaus and top-seed Humboldt State to end its postseason run. Despite the exit from the NCAA regional, the Tritons turned in one of their best seasons in program history in 2007, finishing with a 23-12 record in CCAA play, good enough for a second place finish in the conference standings. Gerckens was named the 2007 CCAA Coach of the Year

2010 YEAR IN REVIEW

2010 marked the first season for the new Triton Softball Field (pictured right), a state-of-the-art facility in the prisitine setting on the UC San Diego campus. The renovated field, featuring new dugouts, a netted backstop, fencing and a press box, were made possible by a $250,000 contribution from Dana Chaiken, the largest contribution ever made by an alumni athlete. The first official game on the new field took place on Feb. 12 against Chico State and the Tritons quickly grew accustomed to their new abode, tallying a 17-9 home record during the 2010 campaign.

Overall in 2010, UCSD compiled a record of 30-20, which stands as the program’s highest winning percentage (.600) since the 2001 campaign brought a 34-17 mark (.667).

UCSD held third place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association for much of the season, before dropping to the sixth spot in the final weekend and narrowly missing bids into the CCAA Tournament and the NCAA postseason.

Four Tritons earned All-CCAA honors at the conclusion of the regular season, with Camille Gaito highlighting the group as Co-Pitcher of the Year. Gaito, Kris Lesovsky and Nicole Saari earned spots on the All-CCAA First Team while freshman Nicole Spangler was selected to be a part of the All-CCAA Second Team.

Gaito managed to improve on her stellar 2009 campaign with an even stronger 2010. The San Rafael, Calif. native threw 182.0 innings, scattering 162 hits while racking up 129 strikeouts en route to an earned run average of 0.96. Her ERA ranked first in the CCAA and sixth nationally at the Division II level. Gaito also recorded eight shutouts, a total that held the No. 16 spot on the national leaderboard.

Impressively enough, Lesovsky (pictured right) matched her production from 2009, when she was named a Louisville Slugger/NFCA and Daktronics All-American. Her power even increased in 2010 as she tallied 16 doubles, three triples and 10 homruns while compiling a .738 slugging percentage. The junior center fielder’s batting average of .413 ranked first in the CCAA and was featured in the top 50 nationally at times.

Saari (pictured below), a senior catcher out of Roseville, Calif., received conference honors for the third time in her four-year career. Ranked third all-time in fielding percentage on the Tritons’ leaderboard with a .991 mark, Saari put together another strong year behind the place by fielding .992 in 2010. She ranked second on the UCSD squad this past season in hitting (.371), doubles (11), runs batted in (27), total bases (69), on-base percentage (.425) and slugging percentage (.457). • March was the month to remember for UCSD softball in 2010, as the Tritons won 15 of their 18 games in that time. Those March wins pushed UCSD’s record to 2311 overall, marking the program’s best start to a season at the D-II level. During that time, the Tritons began to receive votes in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top-25 Poll. UCSD started March by taking three of four on the road from San Francisco State before moving onto home sweeps over Dixie State, Cal State Stanislaus and Cal State San Marcos. The Tritons capped off the month with a 4-2 performance at the Tournament of Champions, where UCSD earned a spot in the Gold Bracket.

MEET THE ATHLETICS DIRECTOR Earl W. Edwards - Director of Athletics

E

arl W. Edwards accepted the position of Director of Athletics at UC San Diego in March 2000. Since his arrival, the UC San Diego athletics department has been nationally recognized for its academic and athletic achievements on numerous occasions. Under his guidance, the 23-sport program has made a very successful transition from the NCAA Division III ranks to Division II. In fact, UC San Diego has surpassed all expectations at the D-II level, capturing women’s soccer national championships in both 2000 and 2001.

Since moving to Division II in 2000, UC San Diego has been ranked among the top seven programs in the country on eight different occasions in the annual Director’s Cup standings. In two of those finishes, UCSD was the national runner up. UC San Diego has also won the last five California Collegiate Athletic Association Commissioner’s Cup titles, an award that recognizes the best overall athletics program in the conference. Additionally, UCSD has been ranked No. 1 in Division II (and in the top 20 overall) in the last two National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSA) Collegiate Power Rankings, which comprehensively measures student-athlete graduation rates, academic strength and athletic prowess.

Edwards has served on many regional and national committees and organizations. Currently, he serves on the Executive Council for the CCAA and he served on the Executive Committee of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) from 200307. Edwards was the president of the National Association of Athletic Development Directors (NAADD) and has severed on numerous other NCAA committees, including the Division II Management Council, the Division II Championships and Minority Opportunities and Interest, the Walter Byers Scholarship and Committee for Women’s Athletics. He has published several articles in Athletic Management and was featured on the cover of the June 2007 issue. In 2007, he was selected Athletic Director of the Year for the West Region by the NACDA.

A 1972 graduate of East Stroudsburg University, Edwards earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. He then went on to receive his masters in Sports Administration from the University of Massachusetts in 1973. In addition to working as athletics director at East Stroudsburg University and UC San Diego, he has athletics administration experience at the University of Massachusetts, UC Davis, the University of Michigan, and Drexel University.

ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE AND SPORTS MEDICINE

T

wo integral parts of the UC San Diego athletics department are the Athletic Performance Program and the Sports Medicine Program, both of which provide a tremendous advantage to all 23 of the UCSD intercollegiate sports. The Athletic Performance Program is geared toward teaching each student-athlete how to achieve the highest level of athletic development through enhancement of all components of strength and conditioning. Athlete workouts are planned and monitored out by Rudy Thomas, UCSD’s Director of Strength and Conditioning. Thomas brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Triton athletics and represents the only full-time strength and conditioning coach in the CCAA. The Tritons work out in the RIMAC weight room, which is over 12,000 square feet in size and features state of the art equipment. The UCSD Athlete Performance Program is truly designed with the student-athlete’s enhancement in mind. Very few programs at the Division II level have such expertise and first class facilities at the disposal of the student-athlete, helping to further distinguish the Triton Athletics Department as one of the premiere intercollegiate programs in the country. The UC San Diego Sports Medicine Center is dedicated to the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic-related injuries suffered by Triton student-athletes. Under the supervision of head athletic trainer Kevin Messey MS, ATC, CSCS and his staff, UCSD athletes receive the highest quality medical care and access to an extensive network of physicians and other medical specialists. The rest of the training room staff is comprised of two fulltime ATCs, two graduate assistant ATCs and an average of 10 athletic training students. The UCSD athletic training room is a clinical site for San Diego State University’s accredited athletic training education program, where some of the athletic training students fulfill their clinical experience. Additionally, the UCSD Sports Medicine Center offers a wide variety of options for examination and rehabilitation. From acupuncture to a group of six highly specialized sports medicine, family practitioners and orthopedic surgeons, the UCSD training room has a multitude of options at your disposal to get you healthy and back on the field of competition in no time.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

T

he UC San Diego Department of Athletics is committed to actively participating in the community through a variety of outreach events and services. Student-athletes from 23 sports participate in a wide range of service and outreach programs in and around the San Diego area. In 2003-04 the Tritons began the “Team Up!” program. This program assists local elementary schools that do not have a physical education component in their current curriculum. UCSD student-athletes provide healthy physical activity and create an environment for elementary school students that foster positive thinking and team building. The program was run at the Del Mar Heights Elementary School in the morning hours prior to school starting and during the students’ lunch periods during the past two years. Triton student-athletes make the holidays brighter for 12 families in the San Diego area on an annual basis, providing a plethora of gifts and holiday cheer. Triton teams paired up and each tandem purchased presents, food, and goodies to deliver to their adopted family before the holidays. Families were selected by the Neighborhood House Association which runs the Head Start programs throughout San Diego County. Student-athletes contacted the families to find out what special presents the children wanted, as well as what sort of clothing or other needs could be met. Teams delivered the presents in person and spent time with the families, often playing games with the children. Families each received approximately $300-$500 worth of gifts, depending on the number of children. Presents ranged from a bike for one child to clothing and food for the parents. In conjuction with the California Collegiate Athletic Association as the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Triton student-athletes have gone to work to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in each of the last three years. The student-athletes held a bake sale during the Annual Sun God Festival on the UCSD campus. Each team brought baked goods for a sale in the evening prior to the festival’s main event. The goal at each CCAA member institution was to raise $1 per student-athlete. Triton student-athletes far exceeded this goal, raising over $1,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in 2005. Additionally, the Intercollegiate Athletics Department holds an annual Blood Drive to benefit the American Red Cross. All coaches, staff and out of season student-athletes participated in the blood drive, while those student-athletes who were in season recruited other students on campus to donate blood on their behalf.

Spanish for ‘the jewel’, La Jolla is one of San Diego’s first neighborhoods to be settled. The city of La Jolla has spectacular beaches and park areas that are popular for great diving, swimming, surfing, hiking, romantic sunset strolls, and family fun. La Jolla’s village area boasts a beautiful Mediterranean charm and a cool Southern Californian vibe, and rolls out the red carpet when it comes to it’s fine dining, theatre, cultural activities, boutique shopping, art galleries, and fine lodging establishments. It is no wonder why La Jolla’s Prospect Street was dubbed ‘San Diego’s Rodeo Drive’.

The city of San Diego is a major commercial business center with more than 2.6 million residents and a varied economy based in agriculture, manufacturing, aerospace, technology, electronics, aircraft, ship-building, scientific research and tourism.
