The University of Dallas has been recognized as one of the preeminent liberal arts institutions in the United States. We are reputed by some to be one of the best Catholic institutions in America. At UD, we strive every day to ensure that students are challenged by a rigorous curriculum and a quality education that is second to none. The facts bear it out.

Our alumni have earned 36 Fulbright Awards. We have an outstandingly high per capita population of National Merit Scholars currently enrolled at UD. We are the youngest university to be awarded a Phi Beta Kappa chapter, and our students have a demonstrated record of academic accomplishment while attending UD and upon graduating. Our College of Business is a continuation of that academic excellence. The Graduate School of Management, as it was named at the time, was one of the first MBA programs in the country for working professionals. With 15,000 College of Business alumni, half of which live in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, we have the largest collection of MBA alumni in the area. In many ways, the College of Business is the living manifestation of UD founder Bishop Thomas Gorman’s exhortation that the university serve Catholics in North Texas and founder Eugene Constantin’s call for UD to be a great university, rather than just another nice, little Catholic college. The College of Business is a unique answer to that call as it executes its mission to develop competent and responsible managers who are principled and moral leaders by delivering an education that requires students to appreciate the practice of management. A true university is one that consists of multiple colleges that complement each other and create a synergy of great educational enterprise. With our accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International), the College of Business at the University of Dallas now officially occupies a respected space within the top five percent of the world’s business schools, a recognition long overdue for the quality business education that is a complement and an asset to the entire University of Dallas.

The final edited broadcast recording may seem like 43 minutes of debate perfection, but, the behind-the-scenes retakes, practice applause and producer requests to remember and repeat long forgotten points made the discussion seem quite different. It was all part of being in the audience at UD last fall for a taping of BBC Radio 4’s popular program, The Public Philosopher. In a quest to take America’s prepresidential-election temperature on the controversial topic of immigration, Senior Producer Mukul Devichand decided to take the show on the road for the first time to America, ultimately choosing Harvard University and UD. “During the first phone call, the show’s producer interestingly identified a former chair of the Texas Republican Party, who happens to be a Southern Methodist University alumnus, as the person who referred BBC Radio on to UD,” said Bill Hartley, director of marketing and communications. Logistics and planning, according to Hartley, were more involved than one might think. An engineer was brought in to ensure broadcast-quality sound. Support was sought from a network of organizations. Volunteers were secured. And, a ticketing system was created to fill Lynch Auditorium with a diverse group of audience members and a perfect balance of viewpoints. “We wanted to fill Lynch with UD students, but that might not have resulted in the most compelling radio possible,” he said. “What we finally ended up with was a pleased BBC.” “It’s gone down a storm,” said Devichand once the broadcast was complete. “Well done to all.” A podcast of The Public Philosopher episode taped at UD, as well as a blog and listener comments, are available at udallas.edu/bbc.

A RANKING OF ANOTHER KIND Nearly anyone who’s ever been involved with a college search knows about the ocean of rankings, all of which are perfectly legitimate but virtually similar in methodology. Floating in that sea, however, is a different kind of college ranking – one that grades nearly 1,100 institutions with an “A” through “F” on the strength of each school’s general education curriculum. The purpose? To identify those that best prepare undergraduates for the workforce. UD is among just 21 colleges and universities nationwide to earn an “A” rating from the American Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA) in its fourth edition of “What Will They Learn?” for providing graduates with the “broad-based skills and knowledge to succeed in the global marketplace.” In addition, the university has been designated a “Hidden Gem” and is one of only three schools to receive credit for every requirement. “We’re extremely pleased that our Core curriculum has earned

OTHER RANKINGS In addition to to the ACTA “A” rating, UD has been recognized by many other well-known organizations.
TRANSFORMATIONAL GIFTS OF SUPPORT The Campus Transformations initiative continues to gain momentum as the university recently received three major gifts for the project that includes an elevated walkway from the UD DART light rail station to the campus center, a series of new gateway entrances and Haggar University Center renovations. Generous financial support has come in the form of $75,000 from the Catholic Foundation, $100,000 from the Hillcrest Foundation of Dallas and $250,000 from Mary Templeton, a longtime university trustee.
A proposed campus entry plaza will be located at the corner of Tom Braniff Drive and the Highway 114 service road.

A SUPER WEEK FOR CHARITY
“I disguised myself as a facilities worker, wearing Reddy Ice coveralls and concealing my notoriously big hair. I entered the Jerome lounge and pretended to work on the sink with a bike wrench. My target, Ellie, entered and walked obliviously past me. Her stereotyping was fatal. I stood up, aimed my water gun and fired three times. Ellie died laughing.” And so goes another harmless KAOS, according to Christian Walker ’15, who received this year’s “Most Villainous Kill” Award. The game was just one of many that helped Charity Week, a student-organized event raise approximately $20,000 for non-profits The Catholic Pro-Life Committee of North Texas and The Least Among Us. The Catholic Pro-Life Committee of North Texas is devoted to restoring legal protection
for every human life, and The Least Among Us seeks to help impoverished people in developing nations. While the Charity Week schedule included traditional programming like jail on the Mall, an airband competition and tuck-ins, it was the student-organized event’s unusual super hero theme that resulted in Cape Day, a unique chance for caped students to experience classes taught by caped faculty.
‘J ’ IS FOR JUGGLING “Juggling seems an almost natural activity for students who become experts at balancing school, faith and social life.” Writer Alexa Turczynski ’15 and illustrator Nicole Stevens ’15 wrote the book on UD, teaming up to create “University of Dallas from A to Z.” The book, according to its student-authors, paints a picture of the university as seen by its students, breaking down some of the essential aspects that make UD what it is. Highlights include G is for Groundhog and N is for the Novinski family. It is available for order at udallas.edu/atoz.
By the Numbers: ‘Ghosts’ When first performed in 1882, Henrik Ibsen’s 'Ghosts' received scathing reviews for its frank look at human relationships. These days, reviews are much less biting, especially those written in praise of University Theater’s fall production of the Western literature classic directed by Kyle Lemieux, assistant professor and Drama Department chair.

REBECCA LOWERY ’15: Sustainable Builder, Philosophy Student Rebecca Lowery ’15 spent last June filling tires with dirt and spreading adobe while an intern for Earthship Biotecture, a company that builds sustainable houses out of recycled materials. Earthship houses are designed to function completely off the grid with solar panels providing electricity and water catchment and recycling systems for water − carefully positioned and designed so that they do not require climate control. “I wanted to do this internship,” Lowery said, “because I didn’t believe that these houses could really function entirely off the grid.” After spending a month in Taos, N.M., helping build several Earthship houses, Lowery is now convinced that the buildings work. In fact, the experience has inspired Lowery to attempt sustainable building techniques in her own backyard. With a bench out of recycled tires and
adobe already under her belt, she is now constructing a screen house around the bench with plans to install a water catchment system to water a garden. According to Lowery, a philosophy major pursuing a concentration in environmental science, studying environmental science has helped ground her in the natural world and balance out the intellectual focus of philosophy. “I think environmental science and philosophy complement each other,” she said. “The only difference is that one of them revolves around working with the physical world, and the other revolves around thinking about the physical world (among other things).” Lowery plans to continue volunteering for Earthship Biotecture; she is particularly enthusiastic about the company’s non-profit operation, which builds Earthship houses in Third World countries.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT Hatton Sumners Scholars have not only gone on to teach a new generation of students the importance of self government, but they have secured positions that enable active influence of government policy. Such graduate successes are among the many reasons that the Sumners Foundation decided to continue its support of UD’s decade-old scholarship program by giving $100,000 to the Politics Department for deserving undergraduate and graduate politics students. In addition, the department recently received a grant from the Charles G. Koch Foundation for a faculty panel discussion on the implications of last November’s presidential election. The foundation, which has a well-established relationship with the university, is also supplementing Scottish Enlightenment, a course taught by Charles Sullivan, associate professor and History Department chair. Five UD students traveled to Haiti this summer to bring medical aid to some of that nation’s most underprivileged citizens. P.J. The trip was made possible by the Gary D. Cieslak Memorial Scholarship, which was founded by the class of 1980 in honor of Cieslak ’80, a pediatric anesthesiologist who passed away in 2009. Fr. Roch Kereszty and Abbot Emeritus Denis Farkasfalvy, O. Cist., were young priests in Rome at the time of the Second Vatican Council’s first session. Fifty years later, the two shared their experiences during one of two events held last October to commemorate the Vatican II golden anniversary. During the second event, Msgr. Michael Olson, Assistant Professor Marti Jewell and Associate Professor Ron Rombs explored the council’s ongoing significance. Both events were presented by the Department of Theology and School of Ministry.

AKADEMEIA PRINTING 3-D
Biochemistry major Justin Samorajski ’13 took matters into his own hands last summer when he decided to build the Physics Department a 3-D printer. Making good use of open source software and construction plans, he presented a proposal to Richard Olenick, professor of physics and department chair, and within a month had amassed a table piled high with parts and blueprints. After constructing the printer and printing a variety of 3-D objects out of plastic, including more parts for the printer, and, his proudest achievement, a 2.5 percent scale replica of Braniff Memorial Tower modeled off the official blueprints, Samorajski is now working with Stephen Slaughter, assistant professor of biology, to develop the printer’s applications for cell cultures and printing living tissue. 3-D printing technology has long-term ramifications for, as an example, organ transplants. “One day, 3-D printing may enable us to use a patient’s own cells to grow a replacement organ,” Samorajski said.
WILLIAM FRANK: CRYSTALIZING THE CORE
8

“I think one of the most important things about our work at UD is the disciplinary base of our studies. There is a balance and order among the disciplines.” After more than 25 years teaching Core courses in both Irving and Rome, Professor William Frank, whose CV also includes Philosophy Department chair and Braniff Graduate School dean, has crystallized his experiences into “An Essay in American Liberal Education: University of Dallas’s ‘Core Curriculum’.” The piece will be published in “The College Curriculum: A Reader,” a collection of essays on different approaches to higher education, in the winter of 2013. He sees the Core curriculum, which has become the foundation for all UD undergraduate programs, as “ordered to the four sources or bearers of reality’s intelligibility: creative works of poesis, human action, things of nature and the Divine Word.” According to Frank, these four areas speak to the ends of the disciplines most emphasized in the Core − literature, philosophy, history and theology − but they also permeate the ends of other disciplines taught at UD, such as languages, economics and the arts.

BRIAN BENTLEY: GROWING THE UD CHORALE After years of working in sacred music with adult singers, Brian Bentley is enthusiastic about returning to an academic environment to teach young adults in his new role as director of the UD Chorale, the university’s a cappella liturgical choir. “Students often have very solitary educational goals,” Bentley said. “To come together in a group and accomplish something as a choral ensemble is, I think, very beneficial for them.” He brings to UD an “ever-growing” love for Gregorian chant and would like to share that love with the university community by singing Mass with the UD Chorale at least once a month. Other plans for the university’s new ensemble include exploring a musical repertoire in different languages and styles outside the sacred, and eventually adding orchestral accompaniment to a future choral work performance. In addition to directing the UD Chorale, Bentley will continue as director of music and liturgy for the Guadalupe Cathedral, which is located at the center of the Dallas Arts District. There, he directs Gregorian Schola, the Cathedral Chorale and the Diocesan Choir, and is responsible for the liturgical needs of the Dallas Diocese’s cathedral.

WORLDLY EXPEDITION FOR COLLEGE OF BUSINESS AWARENESS
Last August, President Thomas Keefe and Associate Professor Sri Beldona set out on a two-week journey to increase awareness of the College of Business and its graduate programs. Focusing on China, India and Jordan, all of which have growing populations of young adults eager for an American graduate business education, the trip stretched halfway around the world, across four continents and 14 time zones. Days 1-7 Dallas to London to Mumbai and New Delhi, India, for meetings with partner school Shaheed Sukhdev College and education consultants. Schedule packed with six days of pitches to prospective partners a visit with the U.S. Embassy’s visa officer and meetings with prominent local business leaders. India leg concludes with late night flight to the next destination.
Days 8-10 A brief layover in Kuala Lampur before landing in Shanghai. First up, a day trip to Nanjing to meet with administrators and faculty at Nanjing University, a UD partner school. Remaining time in China reserved for a visit to Shanghai University and stops at the U.S. Consulate and New Oriental Education Group.
WHEN THE CHURCH CALLS
Days 11-14 Depart Shanghai en route to Amman, Jordan, by way of Dubai. Trip highlighted by an opportunity to address an education and tourism conference hosted by partner school Middle East University as a guest of the Jordanian minister of travel and antiquities. Squeeze in a meeting with U.S. Embassy visa officer.
Day 15 Amman to London then back to Dallas with new relationships and opportunities.
Early last December, President Thomas Keefe traveled to the Vatican to attend an international congress, Ecclesia in America. The conference, called in response to His Holiness Benedict XVI’s call for the Catholic Church to celebrate a Year of Faith and under the guidance of Our Lady of Guadalupe, worked to foster bonds of friendship between Catholics in both of the Americas. While there, Keefe stayed within the walls of the Vatican at the House of Saint Martha, a residence constructed by His Holiness John Paul II to house the cardinals in conclave to select the new pope. The residence usually serves as a guesthouse. Earlier in the year, Keefe represented UD in Baltimore at a working group led by the United States Committee of Catholic Bishops on the 10-year review of Ex Corde Ecclesiae. Participants prayerfully deliberated on how to bridge academic and pastoral efforts to the greater fulfillment of the Church’s mission. “It was a great blessing and honor for UD to be recognized as a successful Catholic institution and to help the future of Catholic education,” Keefe said. RECOMMENDED READING
Nathaniel Hawthorne as Political Philosopher The Author: With examples drawn from the American novelist’s fiction, Professor John Alvis, ’66, shows that Hawthorne’s characters bear something sacred in their generic humanity, yet are subject to moral judgment. In a Nutshell: “Hawthorne’s 'The Scarlet Letter' offers lessons in the meaning of the Declaration of Independence as a guide to Americans in their individual conduct, to secure justice in their communities and to foster family integrity. It renders in personal and dramatic terms the meaning of such American principles as a higher law of nature, the sanctity of individual rights and the moral significance of liberty and equality.” Start Reading: Available in hardcover ($49.95) from amazon.com.
12 l TOWER l WINTER 2013
Maimonides & Spinoza The Author: In “Maimonides & Spinoza,” Professor Joshua Parens focuses on the philosophical psychology of one medieval and one modern Jewish author. He aims to break through some of the unproductive disputes about their metaphysical or theological views and to clarify in general the differences between medieval and modern philosophy. In a Nutshell: “One of the key objectives of this book is to challenge the view that Maimonides is in any significant sense a protomodern. I contend that the main value to be derived from studying Maimonides is to gain distance from our own world and viewpoint, which has been so deeply shaped by the thought of Spinoza.” Start Reading: Available in paperback ($35) or digital ($7) from the University of Chicago Press.
Alex Van Helsing: The Triumph of Death The Author: Jason Henderson, ’93, sold his first fantasy novel while a student at UD. Since then, he started publishing a successful series of young adult novels, Alex van Helsing, of which “The Triumph of Death” is the third book. Alex van Helsing, a 14-yearold boy descended from the famous vampire hunter Dr. Van Helsing, has only days to prevent an apocalypse in this series finale. In a Nutshell: “Alex van Helsing leapt from the plane without another thought, and in the corner of his eye he saw the black shape of the aircraft zip away… This was not how the end of the weekend was supposed to go.” Start Reading: Available in paperback ($8.99) or Kindle ($3.79) from amazon.com.
The Zuckerberg Galaxy The Author: Joseph Duggan, ’77, is a former White House speechwriter, State Department officer and newspaperman who now works for Aramco in Saudi Arabia.“The Zuckerberg Galaxy: A Primer for Navigating the Media Maelstrom” was published for the centennial of Marshall McLuhan, and brings the work of this prescient communications scholar, who is responsible for coining the expressions “the medium is the message” and “the global village,” to bear on today’s dizzying social media environment. In a Nutshell: “ ‘The Zuckerberg Galaxy’ is a primer for anyone interested in preserving civil discourse and sanity in a world where ‘friend’ is no longer a sturdy noun but a wobbly verb.” Start Reading: Available on Kindle ($.99) from amazon.com.

ith the election buzz of political ads and punditry nearly silent, Politics faculty gathered to bring their expertise and years of study to bear on the results of the 2012 presidential election. Professors Tiffany Jones Miller, David Upham, Jonathan Culp, Daniel Burns and Richard Dougherty all voiced their opinions on the different facets of the national situation with which they were most familiar. The panel discussion also touched on, among other things, six issues cited by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops as requiring careful consideration from Catholic voters: the economic crisis; war, especially in the Holy Land and throughout the Middle East; abortion and other human life issues; religious liberty; the definition of marriage and immigration. Miller raised concerns about what the expected deficit reduction plan, which many think will consist of a combination of tax increases and spending cuts, might do to the economy. “It will take our very fragile recovery and throw us back into a recession, thus creating a double dip recession.” Upham meditated upon the election itself. “There seem to be long-term trends…favoring a political philosophy that says more govern-
ment security and less self-reliance.” Culp described the nation’s complicated international situation, “After all this theorizing about where the world is going and America’s place in it, we end up…facing a world where the future is quite uncertain, where almost anything you do carries with it nearly unforeseeable risks. That’s the kind of world in which Obama finds himself.” Now that the President is in his second term, Burns speculated that he may turn to immigration as a piece of legacy legislation. He emphasized the necessity of doing something to both legalize wellestablished illegal immigrants and to secure the border. Burns also provided an overview of the national situation regarding the definition of marriage, now that nine states have legalized samesex marriage and 30 states (and the federal government after the Defense of Marriage Act) define marriage as between one man and one woman. “This is a very awkward situation for the Full Faith and Credit Clause of our Constitution,” said Burns. Dougherty, providing closing thoughts on the President’s tenure, commented, “When driven by what he takes to be injustices, in society, in the workplace, in the world, he is capable of decisive action, but never quick action.”

BUSINESS AACSB ACCREDITATION & 10 YEARS
OF UNDERGRADUATE BUSINESS EDUCATION
The College of Business is in the midst of one of its biggest years ever.

AACSB ACCREDITATION
Many top, global corporations only recruit graduates from AACSBaccredited schools.
AT LAST
The journey wasn’t easy, nor was it brief. In the end, however, the reward was sweet. Now, the College of Business officially takes its place among an elite group of 665 other business programs in the world that are brought together by one common bond. Last December, after hundreds of hours of hard work and planning, which spanned more than five years, the College of Business earned accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International), a distinction awarded to fewer than five percent of the globe’s more than 15,000 business programs. “It is my great pleasure and honor to announce that the university has earned accreditation from AACSB International for our College of Business,” said Dean Robert F. Scherer. “This distinction ensures the degree that current and prospective students receive from the University of Dallas is recognized as one of the world’s best. Achieving this accreditation was no small feat and we are extremely proud to receive the designation.” To achieve accreditation, the college’s entire business program was required to undergo a meticulous internal review and evaluation process. During the period, the faculty and staff developed and implemented a mission-driven plan to satisfy 20 quality standards set forth by AACSB relating to faculty qualification, strategic management of resources and interactions of faculty and students, as well as a commitment to continuous improvement and achievement of learning goals in degree programs. During the process, the college was visited and evaluated by business school deans with detailed knowledge of business education, who then applied accreditation standards that are widely-accepted in the educational community. “We warmly congratulate the University of Dallas College of Business and welcome them into
the AACSB family of internationally accredited business schools,” said John J. Fernandes, president and chief executive officer of AACSB International. “AACSB Accreditation represents the highest achievement for an educational institution and its college of business. The dean, faculty, staff and administration are to be commended for their dedication and commitment to continuous improvement, and for their role in
earning initial accreditation.” In practical terms, AACSB Accreditation will be a catalyst in creating benefits that stretch across the entire spectrum of college constituents, including students, faculty, employers, donors and alumni. “For students and prospective students, the five-year maintenance cycle that follows AACSB Accreditation virtually guarantees they will receive everything they need from the College of Business to excel from day one of their careers,” said Nancy Schreiber, senior associate dean for academic and administrative affairs. “Ongoing peer visits and evaluation ensure that we will continue to provide the components needed for success, including relevant knowledge, useful skills, access to employers, challenging courses and a wealth of resources.”
According to Director of Career Services Julie Janik, the accreditation, which applies to all College of Business programs, will also positively affect the college’s ability to attract employers. “Many prospective employers associate AACSB Accreditation with schools that have better faculty, curriculum, students and, most importantly, graduates who are ready to perform on their first day,” she said. “For these employers, choosing the right job candidate from the very beginning minimizes the risk of being forced to repeat the costly hiring and onboarding processes that result from hiring graduates who are unprepared.” There are many other benefits that AACSB Accreditation can bring. Learn more about this hallmark of business education excellence by visiting udallas.edu/aacsb.

“The liberal arts Core curriculum taught me how to think and how to learn, while the business leadership program taught me how to apply those skills to the business world,” said McCabe. Memories
YEARS
Like its whistling namesake, Groundhog, powered by a foundation of whimsy, tenacity and hibernation, has survived threats from tradition, weather and law. Now, as it reaches a half century in existence, UD’s quirky and mysterious annual celebration continues to dig deeper into the soul of the UD community to find a den safe against yearly troubles ’til it returns to teach us that in the wait for warmth, light is to be lauded and shadow avoided.

SERVE CALLED TO
Serving the Catholic Church has been UD’s commitment since it was founded in 1956. Not only do alumni serve as chaplains, youth ministers, brothers, sisters and priests, but seven bishops claim UD as their alma mater. Alumni like Bishop Daniel E. Flores, ’83 & ’87, of the Diocese of Brownsville (Texas) mention the university’s liberal arts education as being instrumental to their formation as clergy. “I have always counted my time at the University of Dallas as one of the most formative experiences of my life and am grateful to God for the many gifts I received while there,” said Flores. Similarly, Bishop Robert Francis Vasa, ’76, who now leads the Diocese of Santa Rosa (Calif.), remembers becoming enthralled with the works of William Faulkner while studying theology at UD. “I found at the university an opportunity to engage this world of ideas, grapple with them and derive from them my own synthesis of philosophy, theology and world view,” he said. “The exposure, along the way to good secular and challenging literature, became an integral part, for me, of that synthesis.” Our newest alumni bishop, Joseph Strickland, ’81, who was formally invested as bishop of the Diocese of
Tyler (Texas) last November, looks back on his UD years fondly. “I truly believe the education I received at the University of Dallas is the foundation of all that I have done in 27 years of priesthood. I remember laughing with friends and family, after I began to truly enter into the UD experience, as I told them ‘we even write reflection papers in math class.’” “UD offered me the wonders of the human endeavor as they have unfolded throughout history and encouraged me to reflect deeply on the meaning of these wonders. That deep reflection in the light of Christ has been basic to all of my work as a Catholic priest,” said Strickland. Others are auxiliary bishops J. Douglas Deshotel, ’74, and Mark Seitz, ’76, of the Diocese of Dallas, and Oscar Cantu, ’89, of the Diocese of San Antonio. Bishop Michael Duca, ’74 & ’78, serves the Diocese of Shreveport.
The Unofficial Eighth Bishop James D. Conley may not be a UD alumnus, but after six years as the Rome campus chaplain he is certainly a member of the UD family. That would explain the outpouring of support for the university’s unofficial eighth bishop alumnus by UD alumni, parents, staff, faculty and friends who traveled to Nebraska from as far away as Dallas, Chicago and Phoenix to see him installed as bishop of the Diocese of Lincoln last November. “It was wonderful to have a contingent of former UD students, professors and friends attend my installation,” said Conley. “The presence of so many UD friends reminded me of all the happy memories I have from Due Santi.” 20 l TOWER l WINTER 2013

“The legal profession is romanticized beyond absurdity. Rarely, do I get to flamboyantly make novel arguments before the court. Instead, practicing law, more often than not, consists of long hours of reading, writing and thinking critically about your case.”
According to Justin Chopin, BA ’02, success as an attorney depends on being able to take those skills and creatively adapt them to different clients and audiences. For him, that ability began developing during his four years at UD, and he specifically gives much of the credit to hours of roundtable discussions in Gorman and hundreds of weekly writing assignments. graduate or postdoctoral research. Rebecca Mattingly, BA ’10, and David Harman, BA ‘10, were married last August.
…helping shape Dallas’ growing, dynamic arts scene Chronologically, Dylan Key, BA ’11, is a relative newbie to professional theatre. What he might lack in experience, however, is more than offset by shared wisdom and encouragement from theatre veterans like drama faculty Kyle Lemieux and Stefan Novinkski. As associate director of Undermain Theatre, he already has come to realize that his profession’s make up is part artistic creation and part organizational administration, when one day can be spent meeting with designers and the next reviewing grant applications. Although the small theatre’s home is historic Deep Ellum, it bolsters the entire area’s arts scene by collaborating with other organizations and venues. One of its most significant partnerships is a production of Edna Walsh’s “Penelope,” the first full theatre production in the new Dallas City Performance Hall. Like Key, Bridget Marx, BA ’99, similarly relies on her ability to use regularly both the creative and analytical sides of her brain. As associate director and curator of exhibitions at Southern Methodist University’s Meadows Museum, she is not only responsible for the museum’s exhibitions, but its day-to-day operation. She constantly relies on UD experiences to manage the museum, which has the largest collection of Old Master paintings in Dallas. “Exhibiting art in a museum setting requires presenting a painting or group of objects within its historical context,” explained Marx. “I constantly draw upon the Core to pull theological, philosophical and historical comparisons into my discussions of the art object.” In her role as membership database coordinator, Ester Ippolito, BA ’07, plays a vital development role by cultivating support for the Nasher
Mary Schuhriemen, BA ’10, published ”The Need to Re-evaluate: Identity in Or Else: Poem/ Poems 1968-1974” on Robert Penn Warren in the fall issue of the Southern Literary Journal. Charles Weigel III, BA ’10, was elected grand knight of Mater Dei Council 15033. Jennifer Beesley, MA ’11, is a faculty member at Ursuline Academy of Dallas, where she will be teaching theology.

Sculpture Center. Maintaining a growing list of members and ensuring member benefit satisfaction contributes to her feeling that she is helping Dallas become a more livable city. “UD’s Core, and specifically the arts history curriculum, gave me a true appreciation for the arts and helped me realize how art improves a population’s quality of life,” she said. “It’s rewarding to know that I help sustain one of the city’s cultural gems.” Similarly, Clare Chadwick, BA ’11, is an integral part of a museum’s development efforts. As a development assistant for the nearby Dallas Contemporary Art Museum, she supports fundraising, sponsorship and stewardship projects that directly impact the museum’s ability to present public access to the art of our time. “The rigors and range of UD’s academics helped me develop a work ethic suitable for a career in museum development,” she said. “There’s always a lot to be done by few people in a short period of time with limited resources.”

Molly O’Connor, BA ’11, was a researcher last summer at the Madhyam Foundation. She recently received a research grant from American University, and is spending three months living in Odisha, India, conducting academic research on the nature of NGO networks. Dwight Lindley, PhD ’11, accepted a tenure-track position with Hillsdale College's English Department. Joey Marzuola, BA ’11, recently started a company, FloPower. Amanda Mebane, BA ’11, married Brent Miller last May. They now reside in Kansas City. Brennan Pecha, BS ’11, won second place with a group of students from Washington State University in an international hydrogen design competition. Their innovative design created a power plant that can produce heat, hydrogen and electric power from wheat straw. Katelyn Peterson, BA ’11, and Cale Cummings, BA ‘11, are engaged. Serena White, BA ’11, is the recipient of the 2012 Robert Lewit Fellowship in Education Policy from the American Council of Trustees and Alumni. As a Lewit Fellow, she worked on ACTA’s flagship “What Will They Learn?” college ratings guide. Michael Daugherty, BA ’12, is a university fellow in the master of accounting program at The Ohio State University. Anna Maria DeLaRosa, BS ’12, was awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, which provides three years of support for her doctoral research. She is pursuing a degree in inorganic chemistry at Texas A&M University.

THE JOURNAL OF EMILY MADDEN
As both a guard on UD’s women’s basketball team and an outfielder for softball, Emily Madden, ’14, knows the challenge of maintaining a delicate academics-athleticssocial life balance. The following journal, which is not unlike that of most UD student-athletes, tells the story of a typical day in the life of an extremely busy and energetic NCAA Division III athlete from Torrington, Wyo.
A WIN-WIN SITUATION “It’s sometimes difficult for student-athletes to find time to do anything but be a student and an athlete,” said women’s basketball player Christy Allen. “Hearts and Hammers gave our team a chance to bond off the court while doing something good for our community.” Last September, UD’s softball and women’s basketball teams came together to repair and paint a west Dallas home. The project, which team members hope to repeat, was coordinated through Campus Ministry for Hearts and Hammers, a local organization that refurbishes qualified homes owned by low income citizens.
Early to Rise
After Lunch Forensics
Awake at 5:10 a.m. Headed to the gym for two hours of training, followed by 20 minutes of ice and roll-out to soothe aching knees.
After lunch with roomies Brooke and Marleyna, I rush off for a Forensic Chemistry Lab refresh before a fingerprint identification quiz at 1. I buy a Charity Week t-shirt on the way.
A Quick Bite
Cowboys & Bears
It’s already 8 a.m., so I’m off for a quick team breakfast before a shower and my first class. It’s 9:15 a.m., so 35 minutes to study before class.
By 2:50 p.m., I’m done with classes and labs just in time for practice. Three hours of basketball later, and finally a break. Forty minutes to get ready for a trip with Marleyna and Zach. The Cowboys take on the Bears at Cowboys Stadium.
Back-to-Back Classes
Tomorrow’s Another Day
10 a.m. is Intermediate Italian and a lesson on conditionals and double pronouns. At 11 a.m. comes a Productions and Operations Management exam. Hoping for an ace.
Home by midnight with 15 minutes to tell Brooke how much fun she missed. It’s 12:30 a.m. and time for sleep, knowing tomorrow is another day, only this time with polyatomic ions, American history, the law of supply and demand, a lot more basketball…and softball on the way.

FINALWORD
RECOGNITION WORTH THE WAIT
In a recent study, 93 percent of AACSB-accredited and in-process institutions from regions around the world reported that AACSB Accreditation "has a continuous positive effect on ongoing curricula development, program design and delivery methods."
What does the College of Business have in common with Sisyphus, the mythological figure forever condemned by Zeus to roll a massive boulder up a steep hill only to have it roll back to the bottom as he neared the summit, starting the process over again? As it turns out, not much, although our effort to earn accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International) at times has seemed like a Sisyphean task. The College of Business’s accreditation effort actually began in 1998 when AACSB admitted what was then the Graduate School of Management (GSM) to candidacy on July 16. Even that date, however, is not the actual starting point, as GSM faculty spent countless hours completing a pre-candidacy review of the school’s curriculum in anticipation of applying for candidacy. So that is where our AACSB quest officially began, in mid-1998 with a restructuring of the GSM curriculum and a concerted effort to hire additional faculty, which we knew would be essential for our accreditation effort to be a success. In that wave of faculty hiring, there came 12 new faculty members including eight who are still with the college: Ruth May, Dale Fodness, J. Lee Whittington, Sri Beldona, Fernando Arellano, Scott Wysong, Rod Hilpirt and Brian Murray. Although we made significant progress toward accreditation, fortune did not smile upon us. And in 2002, we were forced by circumstances beyond our control to
withdraw from candidacy. While we explored the possibility of returning to the accreditation quest again in 2003, there were not enough resources to move forward for another two years. In 2005, with the appointment of J. Lee Whittington as the College of Business dean, the accreditation quest began anew, which is not to say we immediately applied for accreditation and were accepted. Instead, it meant a lot of preparation was ahead, including gaining the support of the university’s Board of Trustees and, once again, assessing our curriculum. Then, in August 2007, after almost two years of work, we submitted our accreditation application to AACSB International, which was followed by a revised application in December and finally approved in 2008. Once again, we officially began to work on our accreditation effort. This five-year effort, which required changes to our curriculum and the way we operate, as well as the addition of new faculty, culminated on Nov. 28 with our becoming AACSB-accredited. On
Ninety-one percent of AACSB-accredited and in-process institutions reported that AACSB Accreditation, "enhances our ability to effectively compete with other schools for quality students." PHOTOS: JEFF MCWHORTER
that day, the College of Business joined an exclusive group of business schools who have earned AACSB Accreditation − less than five percent of the world’s business schools. Personally, we are very proud to have been a part of this effort. And, we are very proud to be members of the faculty that made this achievement. For years – no, decades − we have known that we provided our students with a high-
quality MBA education. They have told us that. But very seldom were we recognized by other institutions for that accomplishment. Now, with AACSB Accreditation, we have been “recognized.” And, that is great for our university, faculty and students. So, unlike Sisyphus, who never got that rock to the top of the hill, we have made it. We got it to the top. It may be prideful to say it, but we feel like we are “King of the Hill.” WINTER 2013 l TOWER l 29
HONOR ROLL OF DONORS Thanks to all of our generous donors for your gifts to the University of Dallas. Your enthusiastic support is helping educate UD students so they may develop intellectual and moral virtues, prepare themselves for life and work in a problematic and changing world, and become leaders able to act responsibly for their own good and for the good of their family, community, country and church. Many of you have probably heard me say that greatness requires resources, which, in our case, comes from the generous support of alumni, parents, friends, corporations and foundations. Without the financial resources you provide, the University of Dallas would be unable to rise to the challenges that success brings. Last year, the quality of our university was recognized nationally and even internationally by Forbes, The Princeton Review, U.S. News & World Report and others. In addition, I was asked by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to serve on a committee of bishops and university presidents that will address topics related to Catholic higher education and our essential contribution to the Church and society. We hope you are as proud as we are of the increased recognition your alma mater has received over the last year. Today, more than ever, your continued support is critical to sustaining our new momentum. Through your generosity, new generations will be able to benefit from the rigorous academic standards and enthusiastic Catholicism that defines the UD experience. Again, thank you. Sincerely,
Thomas W. Keefe, JD President
This honor roll includes all gifts received between June 1, 2011 and May 31, 2012. The goal of the Advancement Services Department is to promptly and accurately acknowledge all contributions. If you have any questions regarding your giving to the university or the listing in this honor roll, contact David Smith at 972-721-4105 or email dcsmith@udallas.edu.

Campus Transformation The University of Dallas has been providing students with an outstanding education for over 50 years. Academically, we are measured against some of the best schools in the nation. However, the campus, itself, needs immediate attention if we are to continue attracting exemplary students and faculty, growing enrollment and enhancing the quality of life for our existing community. The Campus Transformation project is the first step in bringing the level of aesthetics on campus on par with the level of academics.
