Since the consolidation of the University of Detroit and Mercy College of Detroit in 1990, UDM athletic teams have found themselves referred to in many different forms. In order to maintain consistency, we ask that the media and our opponents continue to refer to us as UDM or use Detroit or Detroit Titans, and eliminate the use of such abbreviations as U-D, U of D Mercy, Detroit Mercy, etc. Thank you for your cooperation and your continuing coverage of the Detroit Titans.

For The Media For Your Information
Broadcasts
Information on the Detroit Titans, all other Horizon League teams and the conference is available to members of the media at all times via the Internet. Visit UDM’s official Athletics web site, DetroitTitans.com. The site will include current statistics and game notes as well as other pertinent information about Titan basketball and all other varsity teams. The Horizon League web site is HorizonLeague.org. Results and box scores from all games involving conference members, as well as updated statistics, will be available at the conference web site each game night. Working Credentials Working media and photography credential applications should be made prior to game day with the UDM Sports Information Office. The address is: 4001 West McNichols Rd., Detroit, MI 48221-3038. The fax number is: (313) 993-1765, or e-mail Mitch Wigness (S.I.D.) at mitch.wigness.udmercy.edu Passes not distributed in advance will be held for pick-up at the “Will Call” desk in Calihan Hall’s Northwest ticket lobby. Parking, if requested in advance, can be reserved through the Sports Information Office. Entry to the parking lot should be made through the Fairfield Street gate. Press Row is located on the main floor of the arena, on the same side as the team benches and scorer's table. Seating is limited to working media, professional scouts and accredited school officials.
The Sports Information office has installed two permanent telephone lines and ISDN lines at Calihan Hall available to visiting radio stations. To arrange for their use, or for additional lines, please contact Mitch Wigness (S.I.D.) (mitch.wigness@udmercy. edu/313-993-1745) in advance of game day. Television stations desiring live coverage should contact Keri Gaither (Athletic Director) for broadcast rights. Broadcast spotters or statisticians may be secured through the UDM Sports Information Office with advance notice. Interviews The best time to reach Titans head coach Ray McCallum for interviews is in the morning. Please feel free to contact the UDM Sports Information office for assistance in arranging interviews with the coach. Please arrange all player interviews through the Sports Information office, allowing a day in advance, if possible. We will try to accommodate every request, taking the players’ classroom and practice schedules into account. Titan coaches and players will be available for post-game interviews following a brief cooling-off period. Coach McCallum will hold his post-game press conference in the Media Room, and Detroit players will also be brought to the Media Room for interviews by request. Please note that the Titan locker room is closed to the media following games both at home and on the road. Post-game policy for visitors to Calihan Hall may vary at the teams’ discretion. Media representatives are advised to contact the visiting S.I.D. with special requests.
Game Services Key Phone Numbers (Area Code 313) Programs, media guides, lineups, statistics, Horizon League standings and notes and game background information will be supplied to accredited media representatives and NBA scouts at Press Row and in the Media Room of Calihan Hall. Access is reserved for properly-credentialed individuals only. A limited number of statistics monitors, updated instantly with each play in a game, are available all along press row. An NCAA Box Score is distributed at halftime and a complete NCAA Final Box and play-by-play account will be available following each game in the Media Room. Pre-game refreshments will be served. Wireless internet access is available in the arena. Telephones are also available along press row and in the Media Room. Fax service is available by request only.

Our Television Package The University of Detroit Mercy finalized its 2011-12 television schedule with the addition of four FOX Sports Detroit broadcasts. FSD, the same station that carries the Detroit Pistons, Tigers and Red Wings, will once again partner with the Titans to help strengthen one of the more impressive TV packages in the Horizon League. Those games bring the total number of regional and national televised appearances to a dozen, including a minimum of seven on the ESPN family of networks and one Horizon League “Game of the Week” on WADL-38. The four-game slate begins Dec. 17 when the Southeastern Conference’s (SEC) Mississippi State Bulldogs invade Calihan Hall for a noon tip. More than a month later, the Titans face a noon match-up with rival Wright State on Jan. 21. The lone road contest in the FOX Sports Detroit lineup is a Feb. 2 battle at Valparaiso at 7:30 p.m. Eastern. The final game of the package is a Feb. 12 tilt vs. Green Bay at 1:00 p.m. at Calihan Hall.

In addition, FSD has signed on to do another season of the “Detroit Titan Court Report”, a 30-minute behind-the-scenes look at Titan basketball. The show previews upcoming games as well as recapping past action. Various features will also be shown profiling the Titan student-athletes. The show was a nominee for a Michigan Television Emmy in its first year of production (2010-11).

Our Television Package Titans To Appear At Least Eight Times On ESPN Family Of Networks The Horizon League officially announced its 2011-12 men’s basketball television package to include games broadcast over the ESPN family of networks in addition to its own “Game of the Week” contests. Detroit, whom many are touting as one of the preseason favorites in the league, is listed eight times in the television schedule, with more to be announced from the school with its FOX Sports Detroit package. The highlights include a trio of huge non-conference affairs starting with a Nov. 14 tilt at Notre Dame in a 9:00 p.m. tip on ESPNU. The Dick Vitale Court dedication game occurs on Dec. 5 at Calihan Hall in a 7:00 p.m. start on ESPN2. Six days later, the Titans play at Alabama at 6:00 p.m. on ESPNU.

Both contests against two-time national finalist Butler will be carried on ESPN networks. The Jan. 8 game at Calihan will be on ESPN3 (espn3.com) with the road tilt at noon from Hinkle Fieldhouse on Feb. 4 on ESPN/ESPN2. The top seed in last year’s league tournament, Milwaukee, will play at Calihan Friday, Feb. 10 on ESPNU/ESPN3. The Titans battle Valparaiso on Jan. 6 on ESPNU/ESPN3. Horizon League teams also will be featured on the ESPN networks the weekend of Feb. 17-19 in the Sears BracketBusters. All games on ESPN and ESPN2 will be carried on ESPN3 as well.

Our Television Package Having streamed more than 2,000 free, live events in the last five years, the Horizon League is a recognized leader in video streaming, through the Horizon League Network (HLN). HLN takes viewers inside the conference, featuring student-athlete profiles, weekly highlight shows, comprehensive coverage of all 19 Horizon League championships and other special programming.
The new site is also highly customizable, containing 10 uniquely branded channels for each Horizon League institution. These channels will sort the entire site’s content so visitors who select a favorite team will only see that team’s information. Nearly every section of the site gives users the ability to sort the content by school and/or sport for quick and easy location of content.
In 2010-11, HLN and HorizonLeague.com experienced unprecedented growth as more than 300,000 unique visitors across 149 countries/territories watched HLN coverage. Through the League’s partnership with WebStream Productions, HorizonLeague.com integrated both HorizonLeagueNetwork. tv and HorizonLeague.org, leading to record visitors to the new site. The 2010-11 season featured the 2,000th live event streamed by the League.
The Horizon League’s Game of the Week is back for the second year in a row. The Game of the Week airs one Horizon League contest a week during the year, which will appear in most Horizon League TV markets. The Titans will be featured in the regular seaosn finale when Detroit visits Youngstown State.
HLN is the premier destination for free, live video of Horizon League games and other on-demand features. The Network will web cast more than 400 events during the 2011-12 academic year. Having celebrated its tricentennial in 2001, Greater Detroit has the best of the old and the most promising of the new. From Greektown to Bricktown, Detroit has it all. Music for every taste abounds in Greater Detroit. The Detroit symphony is world-renowned. Jazz greats join local performers at the annual Montreaux Jazz Festival. Popular music fans are entertained at several area music houses including the Royal Oak Music Theater, Orchestra Hall and the Fox Theatre. Detroit is a great sports town, known throughout the country for its enthusiastic fans. The Detroit Tigers play in Comerica Park, which opened in 2000 and hosted the 2005 Major League All-Star Game as well as 2006 World Series contests. Immediately adjacent to the Tigers’ home, the NFL Lions play in another wonderful new facility, Ford Field, which hosted Super Bowl XL in 2006 and hosted the 2010 NCAA Frozen Four. The 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball Midwest Regional was played in Ford Field and the 2009 Final Four, both of the events, incidentally, hosted by UDM. The 2008 Stanley Cup Champion Red Wings call Joe Louis Arena home. The NBA Detroit Pistons play in the Palace of Auburn Hills. Two-thirds of a mile across the Detroit River lies Windsor, Ontario, Canada. To celebrate the friendship and independence of the two nations, the International Freedom Festival is held for two weeks each summer, with activities in both countries.

“Thanks, Detroit!” That was the resounding theme which echoed throughout the Metro area after North Carolina cut down the nets at Ford Field as the new National Champions, and basketball fans from around the country began their travels home. And, of course, UDM was the host institution for college basketball’s crown jewel event, the Final Four. Among the records set? * The highest attended national semi-final games in Final Four history (72,456) * The highest attended national championship game in Final Four history (72,922) * Highest total Final Four attendance (145,378) * Record attendance at Hoop City (more than 75,000 over four days) * Record attendance over three days at the Big Dance, a series of free concerts along the Riverfront (estimated at 300,000 fans) * A record-breaking number of more than 4,000 youth participants in the Final Four Dribble * A record number in the Road to the Final Four 5k Run/Walk (1,702) Over 1,000 pounds of food was recovered by Forgotten Harvest from 36 Final Four events at 12 venues and donated to six different organizations. A thousand pairs of shoes were donated through the Samaritan’s Feet program and distributed to seven different organizations throughout the Detroit area. Fans donated 2,200 pre- and early-reader books at Final Four Friday, Final Four Dribble, Hoop City and the Road to the Final Four 5K Run/Walk to benefit the Legacy Early Childhood Learning program administered by the United Way of Southeastern Michigan. Additionally, Wilson donated 11,000 basketball jerseys to area youth groups. Local children took advantage of the free YES clinics with 380 participants at Renaissance High School, 200 at Western International High School, and 154 at Joe Dumars Fieldhouse (Shelby Township).

Historic Calihan Hall
The Titans continue to enjoy playing their home games in Calihan Hall, long regarded as one of the great places to watch basketball in all of Michigan. UDM’s on-campus facility celebrated its 50th anniversary of service to the Titans in 2002. After a five-year stretch of playing in Downtown Detroit’s Cobo Arena, the Titans returned games to campus in 1993-94, a move which coincided with major exterior renovations and a rededication of Calihan Hall in September of 1993. A newlypainted playing floor, featuring the new Titans logo, was unveiled for the 2008-09 season. Almost all of the building’s locker rooms were remodeled in 1998. A major interior renovation project began one year later and has continued since. New retractable bleachers were installed in the arena’s lower bowl in 2002, and further renovations and improvements — including the new Willie Green men’s basketball locker room — have taken place within the last five years. Calihan Hall houses the Titan Athletic Offices, varsity and intramural locker rooms, sports medicine facilities, the Thelma Fox Murray running track, the Wayne Wheeler Golf Practice Center and the Larry Bleach Fitness Center. It also serves as the basketball practice facility for the Titans all year. The Titan women’s basketball team uses the arena for all of its home contests. UDM hosted the 2000 MCC Women’s Basketball Tournament in Calihan Hall as well. The arena also continues to serve as the host site for numerous games involving the Detroit Public School League, Catholic League and the Michigan High School Boys State Tournament. Additionally, a large number of Intramural events are staged in Calihan Hall.

The dedication of the University’s Memorial Building, as it was known back then, took place May 25, 1952. The first basketball game was played Dec. 2 of that year when U-D beat Kalamazoo, 75-61.
In 1977, the 8,295-seat facility’s name was changed to Calihan Hall in honor of the Titans’ first basketball All-American, the late Bob Calihan. Following graduation in 1940 and a professional career in the National Basketball League — with stops in Detroit, Chicago and Rochester — Calihan returned to U-D in 1948 as the Titans’ head coach. In 21 years at the helm, he compiled a 306-237 record, guiding his 1962 team to the NCAA Tournament and three others into the NIT. He also served 13 years as U-D’s athletic director, retiring in 1977. In a memorable shoot-out the night of Feb. 22, 1988, Bradley All-American guard Hersey Hawkins established the arena scoring record of 63 points in a 122-107 victory. Guard Archie Tullos broke the all-time Titans scoring record with 49 points in that same game. During the 2001-02 season, Detroit extended the nation’s longest homecourt winning streak to a remarkable school record of 39 games before falling to UW-Green Bay, 65-61, on Feb. 11, 2002. During the 56 years since the opening of Calihan Hall, the Titans have enjoyed a 550-221 (.713) homecourt record, including an 11-4 record in 2010-11.

Construction on the new floor at Calihan Hall began in the summer. The first action on the court took place on Sept. 17, 2011 when the men took to the hardwood for a brief workout. The floor will be officially dedicated to former coach and athletic director Dick Vitale in a special ceremony on Dec. 5 in a nationally-televised game (ESPN2) against St. John’s.

Dick Vitale, ESPN broadcaster, college basketball ambassador and former Titan head coach and athletic director, will be honored in December of this year when the University of Detroit Mercy athletics department names its basketball court at Calihan Hall in his honor. Dick Vitale Court at Calihan Hall will be dedicated in conjunction with a nationally-televised event as the men’s basketball team faces Big East foe St. John’s on December 5, 2011, on ESPN2. Vitale will be celebrating his 32nd anniversary of calling games for ESPN at the event. Vitale sat courtside for ESPN’s first-ever NCAA basketball game – Wisconsin at DePaul on Dec. 5, 1979 (a 90-77 DePaul win). Since then, he’s called close to a thousand games, including NBA contests for ESPN during the 1983 and ‘84 seasons. “What Dick has done for the game of college basketball is nothing short of remarkable, and it is only fitting that we honor him in such a special way – given his career started right here at U of D as a head coach,” UDM Director of Athletics Keri Gaither said. “Dick Vitale Court at Calihan Hall will serve as a perpetual and lasting tribute to not only Dick’s time at Detroit but also his significant contributions to the sport over several decades.” “When Keri called me and told me they were going to name the court after me at Calihan Hall, I was absolutely taken,” Vitale said. “I can’t tell you how much this means to me. It should be a special, special moment. It will probably move me to tears. To all the people that made this happen, you’re awesome, baby!” Vitale is best-known for his enthusiastic, passionate, sometimes controversial - but never boring - style. But his passion extends beyond the hardwood as he is quite the philanthropist. His work with The V Foundation, which was founded in 1993 by ESPN and his late friend Jim Valvano, has helped raise millions of dollars towards finding a cure for cancer. He’s also involved with numerous organizations in the Sarasota, Fla. area. Vitale coached at the University of Detroit (1973-77), compiling a winning percentage of .722 (78-30), which included a 21-game winning streak during the 1976-77 season when the team participated in the NCAA Tournament. Included in the streak was a victory in Milwaukee over Al McGuire’s eventual national champion Marquette team. In April 1977, Vitale was named Athletic Director at Detroit and later that year was named the United Fund’s Detroit Man of the Year. In May 1978, he was named head coach of the NBA’s Detroit Pistons, which he coached during the 1978-79 season prior to joining ESPN. He was inducted into the Titan Hall of Fame in 1993. The Dick Vitale Court at Calihan Hall project will feature a brand new, state-of-the-art hardwood floor for the home of the Detroit Titans men’s and women’s basketball teams. Fund-raising for the project will include several other key improvements to the facility.

James E. Haas Men’s Basketball Suite UDM’s recent aggressive and successful fundraising campaign has directly benefited the Titans men’s basketball program as a complete renovation of the men’s basketball office suite was completed in January of 2010. New individual offices for head coach Ray McCallum and his assistants, an enhanced reception area, a basketball conference room and a video room were all part of Phase I of the renovations. Further plans call for the creation of an adjacent sports information suite and media workroom with press conference capabilities to better host the Horizon League Basketball Tournament as the chance arises. The new suite includes a large reception area, individual offices for all of the coaches which feature flat screen TV’s for game review and scouting purposes, a conference room and a state of the art video/film basketball operations office. The adjacent Sophia Boone Conference Room was also revamped during the major construction project. “When I hired coach McCallum, University President Fr. Gerard Stockhausen made a commitment to helping him take our men’s basketball program to the next level by enhancing budgets in areas of coaching salaries, travel, summer school for the players and an increased recruiting budget,” athletic director Keri Gaither said. “Renovating the men’s basketball offices is a crucial component of our plan, as coach McCallum is trying to attract top national recruits.” The UDM Athletic Department celebrated the official dedication of the James E. Haas Men’s Basketball Office Suite with a VIP reception in Haas’ honor prior to the Titans’ game against Chicago State. Haas was the lead donor for the ambitious project, which was modeled largely after the newly-renovated women’s basketball offices located in Calihan Hall’s Wolak Olympic Sports Suite. “Jim has truly lived and served in the tradition of St. Ignatius Loyola as a man for others,” UDM athletic director Keri Gaither said. “His generous support, involvement and spirit for both the University and Titan Athletics over the years is greatly appreciated.” Haas, who graduated from U of D in 1951, was later recognized for his outstanding generosity and commitment to service by being named the 2010 recipient of the Fr. Norbert Huetter, S.J. Award. The award is presented by the UDM Athletic Department to those who demonstrate great leadership and service to others.

Former Titans coach Perry Watson, Willie Green and former UDM President Fr. Gerard Stockhausen, S.J. unveil the new Willie Green Basketball Locker Room The recently-renovated University of Detroit Mercy men’s basketball locker room has been named in honor of Willie Green – a former Titan Horizon League Player of the Year and now a member of the New Orleans Hornets – following Green’s significant donation to help fund the ambitious project in Calihan Hall. Complete renovations went on throughout the summer of 2006, and the locker room was ready for use by the Titans as they began preparations for the 2006-07 basketball season. A special recognition ceremony honoring the Hornets guard was held during UDM’s Homecoming basketball game on Feb. 10, 2007. “It is absolutely wonderful when former student-athletes give back to their alma mater. Willie’s gift speaks volumes, especially to our Titan alumni and friends who support and care so deeply about the program,” UDM athletic director Keri Gaither said. “Willie’s outstanding generosity has enabled us to provide a first-class locker room facility for his former teammates and those to follow. UDM is delighted that we could name this exciting improvement to Calihan Hall in Willie’s honor.”

He played seven seasons for the 76ers, before being traded to the New Orleans Hornets in the summer of 2010. “I wanted to do something for my former Titan teammates to show my appreciation for their friendship and all the good times we shared,” Green said. “The University and the Titan basketball program played a key role in my development during my time there and I’m very happy to be able to give back in this way.” “UDM is a great academic school with a terrific basketball program.” The Willie Green men’s basketball locker room is one of numerous major projects that were designed to enhance Calihan Hall in recent years, and the locker room itself went under some changes with new displays in the Chris Webber Hall in honor of Charles Johnson, and the addition of a Titan achievement board that recognizes outstanding basketball players throughout Detroit’s history.

Season Outlook
20-point games since the turn of the calendar year. After transferring from Jackson Community College before the season, Minnerath wasted little time getting acclimated to NCAA Division I basketball, starting all 33 games for the Titans. The 6-foot-9 forward was the team’s best free throw shooter, hitting at a .832 clip (104-125). Ray McCallum became the first UDM true freshman to be named to an All-Horizon League Team. He also grabbed the Newcomer of the Year Award from the HL, the fifth Detroit player to earn that distinction. The rookie phenom led the team in scoring while collecting the most assists and steals a year ago. The coach’s son turned a busy summer schedule into a spot on the Team USA roster at the World University Games in Shenzhen, China. That squad finished fifth, competing against some of the top talent in the world. He enters his second season with a load of expectations. He was named the Horizon League’s Preseason Player of the Year, the first sophomore on record to achieve that distinction. He and Holman were named to the HL’s Preseason First Team, along with Chase Simon, making a trifecta for Detroit on the first team. That, too, is a first in league history-- making the 2011-12 season a highly-anticipated one for the Motor City.

Simon was recognized with the John Kirwan Award as one of the team’s leading scorers (13.5 ppg). Simon was also the top scorer in 2009-10 en route to over 1,000 collegiate points in just three seasons. He has 909 points in a Detroit uniform and will be aiming to become the 35th player to reach the 1,000-point plateau at the school in his senior season.
Returning every scholarship player from a team that etched 10 Horizon League wins last season, Detroit sets its sights on a return to the NCAA tournament. The Titans (17-16 overall last year) have the horses to make a return to the postseason and have the tough schedule to help them get there. While other teams in the HL lost significant pieces to their team, Detroit only got better. Add in true freshman P.J. Boutte and high-flying Junior College-sensation Doug Anderson to the fold and the Titans have a deep roster of talent. Only two All-Horizon League honorees from last season are back, both are Titans (Ray McCallum, Eli Holman). Holman and forward Nick Minnerath shared the Robert Calihan Most Valuable Player award at the end of last season. The starting front court for the Titans, the duo was an imposing force in the middle in 2010-11. Holman had a solid performance in his junior campaign, racking-up a league-high 13 double-doubles while leading the circuit in both offensive (3.5 rpg) and defensive (6.1) rebounds. Holman was a Second Team AllHorizon League selection and was named to the All-Defensive Team for the second straight year. He was the Legends Classic MVP during the Thanksgiving tournament held at Calihan Hall. While Holman carried the load in the first half of the season, Minnerath used a solid second half to post 11.2 points per contest, including six

Season Outlook The CBE Classic Subregional will be held at Bowling Green nine days later. The Titans will play three games in as many nights, with tilts against George Washington (Nov. 21) and Austin Peay (Nov. 23) book-ending a clash with the host Falcons on Nov. 22. A huge four-game homestand in December includes the much-anticipated duel with St. John’s on Dec. 5 in the official dedication of Dick Vitale Court at Calihan Hall. Less than a week later, the Titans will travel to Alabama, a team that advanced to the NIT Championship game last year. Home games against Mississippi State (Dec. 17) out of the South Eastern Conference (SEC) and Alabama State (Dec. 22) close-out the non-league docket. The 2011-12 ESPN BracketBusters weekend is slated for Feb. 17-19 with Detroit hosting an opponent to be announced mid-season. All told, Detroit’s Division I opponents racked-up an impressive 364-273 overall record last season, a .571 winning percentage. Five teams qualified for the NCAA tournament with six more garnering postseason bids in other postseason brackets (NIT, CBI, CIT).

Another shooting guard, Chris Blake, cracked the starting lineup midway through the second semester and never looked back. He started the final eight games and averaged 10.9 points per game. LaMarcus Lowe is one of six seniors on the roster, returning to help bolster the interior presence. Lowe swatted away 78 shots last year to lead the team, second-most in the league. Donavan Foster, who played in every game a year ago, will see time at the point guard position while Evan Bruinsma and John Hoskins will provide depth in the frontcourt. A slate that includes a robust 15 games against teams that qualified for the postseason a season ago highlights the schedule. When hired at Detroit, McCallum brought 11 years of head coaching experience with him to UDM, having previously served in that role at his alma mater, Ball State (1994-2000), as well as Houston (2001-04). He took four teams to postseason play during his career at those schools. “Coach McCallum’s track record speaks for itself, but I am also very pleased with the way he has put emphasis on the word ‘student,’ in talking of the many student-athletes from a wide variety of backgrounds that he has worked with during his career,” Fr. Gerard Stockhausen, S.J., Ph.D, President, said upon McCallum’s hiring. “His vision for Titan basketball is very consistent with the mission of our University. We welcome coach McCallum and his family to the University of Detroit Mercy.” “Coach McCallum brought with him all of the key elements we were looking for in our new head basketball coach,” Athletic Director Keri Gaither added. “He has a wealth of head coaching experience and he is a proven recruiter. Both of those qualities stood out during our search process. We expect them to pay dividends for the Titans. At the same time, his commitment to academics is exactly what we sought to benefit the studentathletes in our men’s basketball program. We think he is a great addition to our coaching staff.” Quite simply, he brought a winner’s touch with him to all of the stops he has made in his 26-year coaching career, which began at Ball State in 1983-84 as a volunteer assistant coach. He served as an assistant at Wisconsin for the next nine seasons, helping a program that hadn’t been to post-season play since 1947 to NIT berths in 1989, 1991 and 1993. He had a brief stint

as an assistant at Michigan after that latter campaign, before quickly returning to Ball State to make his head coaching debut during the 1993-94 season. The Cardinals posted a 126-76 record during McCallum’s seven-year tenure. McCallum directed Ball State to two NCAA Tournament appearances (1995, 2000) and an NIT berth (1998) and became the first coach in Ball State history to post seven consecutive winning seasons. During his head coaching career at Ball State, McCallum recruited and coached Bonzi Wells, who was the 11th pick of the 1998 NBA Draft. When he left BSU for Houston in 2000, McCallum’s .624 winning percentage was the fourth-best in Mid American Conference history. McCallum served as head coach at Houston for four seasons. In 2002, he led the Cougars to an 18-15 mark and a berth in the NIT, Houston’s first post-season tournament appearance in nine years. Houston finished 9-7 in Conference USA’s National Division that year, and advanced to the league tournament semi-finals

Before arriving at Detroit, McCallum had been a key assistant on the coaching staffs at Oklahoma (2004-06) and Indiana (2006-08), and was a part of four straight trips to the NCAA Tournament with those teams. Recruiting classes at both schools, while McCallum was on their staffs, ranked among the Top 5 in the nation. Oklahoma won its first-ever Big 12 Conference Championship in 2005 while McCallum was a part of the Sooners staff. Among the coach’s protégés at Indiana was a pair of 2008 Associated Press All-Americans, D.J. White and Eric Gordon, who have since moved on to the NBA as first-round draft picks. An outstanding player in his own right, McCallum was a member of two state championship teams at Central High School in Muncie, Ind. As a senior in 1979, he was a starting guard and was named the Most Valuable Player of the state championship game after leading Central to its second straight state title. He stayed in Muncie to play collegiately at Ball State, where he was named the MAC’s Freshman of the Year after leading the Cardinals in scoring with 16.5 points per game. As a sophomore, McCallum again led the Cardinals in scoring, this time with 18.4 points per game, and helped them finish the season with a 20-10 record and a share of the MAC championship. Ball State also earned an NCAA Tournament invitation for the first time in school history that year. The following season, McCallum led the Cardinals in scoring once
again with a 17.6 average, and Ball State won its first outright MAC Championship. As a senior, McCallum was named MAC Player of the Year and conference tournament MVP. He also earned first-team All-MAC honors for the third straight year, ending his career as the MAC’s all-time leading scorer with 2,109 points. Additionally, he won the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award as the nation’s best senior under six-feet tall. He became the first BSU athlete to have his jersey retired in any sport. McCallum graduated from Ball State in 1983 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Technology. One week after graduation, the Indiana Pacers selected him in the 1983 NBA Draft. One of the final players cut in training camp, McCallum played briefly in the CBA before returning to Ball State to begin his coaching career. McCallum and his wife, Wendy, are the parents of a daughter, Brittany Rae (21), who is entering her senior year at Michigan State, and son Ray Michael (19), a Titan sophomore guard.

McCallum Coach’s Clinics Head coach Ray McCallum and his staff have put together a great clinic for coaches since they arrived in the Motor City. On September 25, 2010, UDM hosted the Third Annual Detroit Titans Basketball Coaches Clinic at the Palace of Auburn Hills. “I remember attending these clinics when I was a young coach and how much I got out of them. The coaches were outstanding and I really believe everyone who attended will leave here having learned more about the game of basketball,” said McCallum. Besides the Titan head coach, the clinic was highlighted with great presentations by Detroit Pistons head coach John Kuester as well as his assistant coach Pat Sullivan, current ESPN Analyst Fran Fraschilla, Milwaukee Bucks assistant coach Kelvin Sampson and Miami University (Ohio) head coach Charlie Coles. All of the coaches covered a specific topic on the day such as building secondary offense by Kuester, skill development and offensive and defensive drills by Fraschilla and building team toughness with coach Sampson. “I think it’s great for coaches to get together and learn from each other,” added Kuester. The coaches were assisted by student-athletes from Detroit and Windsor to give all the attendees live demonstrations of all the skills and techniques that were presented. There was also a Q & A with each coach after their topic.

Assistant Coach Carlos Briggs Assistant coach Carlos Briggs turned out to be a sturdy bridge from the old to the new, a holdover from the 2007-08 Detroit bench who was retained by Ray McCallum as part of the head coach’s first staff when he arrived following the ’08 season. The 2011-12 season is Briggs’ fifth overall at the University. His primary responsibilities include working with the Titan guards along with off-campus recruiting and scouting of future basketball opponents. His work can be seen with four guards who have earned AllHorizon League honors since he came to Detroit. Jon Goode was named to the All-HL second team in 2008 after leading the team in scoring at 19.3 ppg. Chase Simon was a second team All-League and All-Newcomer selection in 2010 after topping Detroit with 14.0 ppg., Woody Payne became the first player in school history to earn the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year and freshman Ray McCallum led the team in scoring (13.5 ppg) and was a second-team All-League player last season.
Briggs, a Detroit native, is no stranger to collegiate coaching, having served as the head coach of Schoolcraft College in nearby Livonia from 1997-2006. During his nine years at the helm, he established the Ocelots into one of the best junior college programs in the country, compiling a 249-39 record. In 2000-01, he led Schoolcraft to a 36-1 mark, including a 35-game winning streak, and its first-ever appearance in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Final Four. Briggs was named the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan Coach of the Year in 2002. He was also a three-time Conference, District and Regional Coach of the Year as well as a five-time State Coach of the Year. “Being a Detroiter and having played in the city in high school and junior college, Carlos knows Detroit basketball,” McCallum noted. “He’s had an outstanding career as a coach. He won (junior college) championships and took his team to national tournaments. He’s an outstanding person who has contributed to the development of young people, and I think that’s important. “I followed his career as a player and I’ve known him for a long time. I recruited and signed his (Schoolcraft) players. I felt like I got to know Carlos better through his players.” Not only did Briggs receive numerous coaching accolades during his tenure at Schoolcraft, but his players were often honored as well. He coached seven All-Americans, 27 All-Region players, 14 All-State players and 23 All-Conference selections. His program was known throughout the country by NCAA coaches as Schoolcraft produced 45 Division I signees, including former UDM basketball players Torvoris Baker and Rulon Harris. Briggs’ duties at Schoolcraft were not just limited to coaching,

It’s Go Time! as he advised and assisted all Ocelot athletes with curriculum and course selections. He was also part of the faculty as a Physical Education teacher and oversaw daily study hall hours. Prior to taking the coaching job at Schoolcraft, Briggs spent two seasons as an assistant boy’s basketball coach at a pair of high schools in Texas, Waxahachie (1995-96) and Cedar Hill (1996-97). Briggs attended St. Benedictine High School in Detroit. He went on to play for Schoolcraft for two years before signing with Baylor. As an Ocelot, he became one of the top offensive players in NJCAA history, and still finds his name in the record books with 1,952 career points, eighth all-time, as well as owning the 11th-best individual performance with 60 points in a game. At Baylor, he enjoyed immediate success, leading the Bears with 20.4 points per game during the 1984-85 campaign. After the season, he was named to the Southwest Conference All-Newcomer Team. He went on to get selected by the San Antonio Spurs in the fourth round of the 1986 NBA Draft, and played professionally in the CBA, the World Basketball League and the Philippine Basketball Association. He received his B.S. degree in Education from Baylor in 1993. He currently resides in Detroit.

Assistant Coach Jay Smith Now in his fourth season on Ray McCallum’s coaching staff, assistant coach Jay Smith has brought a wealth of basketball experience with him to UDM. Smith works with the Titans post players as well as scouting future opponents and coordinating the playing schedule. “I’ve known Jay since our college days,” McCallum recalled. “I tried to recruit him to Ball State when I was there. Our relationship has continued for many years. We were on the staff together for a short time at Michigan, and we were competing coaches in the Mid-American Conference. He’ll bring state-wide recognition with him to our school.

CMU racked-up 95 victories under Smith, ranking fourth in Chippewas history. Among the landmark victories were wins over Michigan, Purdue and Notre Dame. His nine seasons at the helm rank as the school’s fourth-longest coaching tenure. Smith recruited and coached two MAC Players of the Year in David Webber (2001) and Chris Kaman (2003). Kaman left Central after his junior season and was the sixth overall
Smith is a former head coach at both Grand Valley State and Central Michigan, and also served as an assistant at Kent State and Michigan during his career. “He’s produced MAC Champions and he’s developed pro prospects. That’s going to make him a great addition to our first staff. He’s going to work with our big guys. He developed Chris Kaman into a (NBA Draft) lottery pick. He worked with (Chris) Webber and all those post guys at Michigan who went on to the NBA,” coach McCallum added. “So you know he’s going to work with our big guys, too.” Since coming to UDM, Smith has helped a pair of Titans earn conference honors in center Eli Holman and forward Xavier Keeling, who were both selected to the All-Horizon League Newcomer team in 2010. Holman-- considered one of the top big men in the league and among mid-majors-- led the conference in rebounding, double-doubles and was a Second Team All-HL honoree in 2011, drawing the eyes of NBA scouts gearing-up for the 2012 draft. In his last college assignment, Smith coached Central Michigan for nine years and was named Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year after leading CMU to regular season titles in both 2001

Smith was also head coach at Grand Valley State for one season – compiling a 23-6 record and guiding the Lakers to a GLIAC Championship, and an NCAA Tournament berth, in 1997 – and served on the staff at Kent State from 1984-89, and at Michigan from 1989 to ’96. Smith still holds the state record for career scoring after notching 2,841 points at Mio Au Sable High School (1976-79). Smith graduated from Saginaw Valley State in 1984, and received his Master’s in 1986 from Kent State. Smith and his wife Tymi are the proud parents of two children, son Cooper (12) and daughter Cazzi Renee (7).

Assistant Coach Derek Thomas Ray McCallum added a seasoned veteran to his UDM staff when he hired Derek Thomas as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator in 2008. Thomas is regarded as one of the best recruiters and basketball minds around and brought a wealth of experience with him to Detroit. The 201112 season will mark his fourth year on the sidelines for Detroit.
his hiring at Western Illinois in the spring of 2003. He spent his last two seasons before WIU as an assistant coach under Charlie Spoonhour at UNLV, where Thomas was instrumental in developing an offense that twice led the Mountain West Conference in scoring. Thomas served as the recruiting coordinator and guards coach for the Runnin’ Rebels, who posted back-to-back 21-win seasons and NIT appearances during his tenure. He also helped prepare point guard Marcus Banks for the 2003 NBA Draft, where he was taken in the first round by Memphis. He also recruited Louis Amundson, who currently plays for the NBA’s Golden State Warriors, to the UNLV program.
Thomas works primarily with the perimter players on the staff. He helped develop a Titan offense that led the Horizon League in scoring in 2010-11.
Thomas has also held assistant coaching positions at Illinois, Minnesota, Saint Louis and Missouri State, and helped coach each of the latter two schools in both NCAA and NIT post-season play. During those stints, he helped recruit and develop such outstanding future pro players as guard Larry Hughes, the 1998 national Freshman of the Year whpo enjoyed a 12-year career in the NBA and center Joel Przybilla, a former Top 10 NBA Draft selection now playing for the Portland Trail Blazers. In April of 2010, Thomas was ranked the top men’s basketball assistant coach at a Division I mid-major school by Hoop Scoop, a college basketball publication and web site. Only two other Horizon League assistants appeared on Hoop Scoop’s annual Top 50 list for 2010. Thomas was part of a 2010 staff that directed one of the best turnarounds in the nation as well as the best one-year improvement in school history as the Titans vaulted from a 7-23 record in 2009 to a sparkling 20-14. He was the head coach at Western Illinois for the previous five seasons before resigning from his position following the 2008 campaign. The Leathernecks made steady improvement during his tenure, culminating with their most wins (12) in seven years during Thomas’ final season as head coach. “Derek is very well-known in our profession. He’s respected as a person and as a coach,” McCallum said. “He’s built up a great relationship with basketball people in Michigan and wherever else he’s recruited around the nation.” Thomas had amassed 15 years of coaching experience prior to

Named to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Ethics Coalition in 2008, the 45-year-old Thomas is a 1989 graduate of Missouri-St. Louis, where he co-captained a team that reached the NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen in 1988. He was inducted into the UMSL Sports Hall of Fame in 2007. His father, Emmitt, is currently a secondary coach for the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs. The elder Thomas enjoyed a 13-year playing career with the Chiefs, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame 2008. His son Derek was his presenter at the induction ceremony. Thomas and his wife, Julie, have four children, Bailey (14), Samantha (12), Jade (10) and Shane (8).

Support Staff Mike Faletti was named the Titans’ Director of Basketball Operations in the summer of 2011. Prior to his recent promotion, Falietti served as a graduate manager, aiding the Detroit coaching staff with pre- and post-practice duties and on-campus recruiting, as well as helping to monitor the academic progress of the Titan student-athletes. No stranger to the basketball sidelines, Faletti spent eight years coaching AAU ball for the Michigan Mustangs’ 15-and-under squad. He helped guide the team to two straight 15-under AAU championships, coaching a number of Division I players, including Michigan’s Zach Gibson and Western Michigan’s David Kool and Andrew Ricks. He has also served as an assistant coach with Detroit Rogers Academy, helping the school to the 2003 Class D State championship, as well as serving as the men’s basketball team manager at his alma mater, Saginaw Valley State University. Off the court, Faletti has spent time as a freelance writer for the Detroit News, covering high school sports. Faletti graduated from SVSU in 2005 with a degree in English as well as a minor in history. He graduated with his Master’s in History from UDM in May 2011.
Matt Ryder joined the Detroit Titans men’s basketball staff as a graduate assistant coach in July of 2010. At Detroit, he will assist the program in a variety of capacities, including film exchange and video, academic performance and office administration. Ryder is no stranger to head coach Ray McCallum as he was a team manager at Indiana for three seasons (2005-08), the last two with McCallum as an assistant coach at IU. For the Hoosiers, Ryder assisted in film exchange, practice preparation and daily office administration, helping the team to a 21win campaign and a second round appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2007. Two seasons ago, Ryder was a graduate manager at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, helping the staff with a variety of duties. The 49ers went on to win 19 games, including posting a 9-1 record to start the year, the school’s best start in 18 years, with wins over top 25 teams Louisville and Temple. A native of Boca Raton, FL, Ryder lettered in football and basketball at Boca Raton High School. He graduated from Indiana with a bachelors degree in marketing and he is currently pursuing his MBA at UDM.
Stacey Barns is in her 11th year working in the University of Detroit Mercy’s athletic department and her seventh year as the men’s basketball office manager. She is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the office, including helping to coordinate travel and schedules for all coaches. Barns and her husband, Gary, reside in Goodrich and have three children, David, Sarah and Maribeth, all of whom graduated from UDM.

Michael Miller, a 1995 graduate of Ball State with a degree in athletic training, was named the Director of Sports Medicine/Head Athletic Trainer in August of 2006. He was promoted to Assistant AD for Sports Medicine in June, 2010. Prior to UDM, Miller was an associate athletic trainer for eight seasons at Notre Dame where he worked primarily with women’s basketball, cross country and football. Before his stint in South Bend, IN, Miller was a graduate assistant trainer at Eastern Michigan, where he worked with the football team and coordinated athletic rehabilitation, while completing his master’s degree in exercise physiology.
While at Ball State, he worked with the men’s volleyball, women’s track and field, football and baseball teams. In 1995, Miller helped the home event coverage for the Richmond (Ind.) Roosters minor league baseball team. He also served an internship in 1994 with the NFL’s New England Patriots, and later did a clinical rotation with Muncie Central High School and Central Indiana Sports Medicine. A native of LaGrange, IN, Miller and his wife Michelle have three sons: Spencer, Conner and Parker. Joe Tofferi joined the Athletic Department staff in August of 2006 to serve as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Titans and he was promoted to Assistant AD for Strength and Conditioning in June 2010. Certified as a strength and conditioning specialist by the National Strength and Conditioning Association since 2002, Tofferi possesses a pair of degrees from Western Michigan. He earned his bachelor’s in exercise science in 2004 and was awarded his master’s in exercise physiology two years later. Before coming to Detroit, Tofferi worked as a graduate assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at WMU. His duties included serving as the head strength and conditioning coach for women’s gymnastics, men’s tennis, and women’s tennis. Tofferi-coached teams captured four conference championships in his two years. Prior to serving as a graduate assistant, Tofferi worked for a pair of seasons as a student intern, directing the conditioning program for the 2004 National Champion synchronized skating team and the 2005 Mid-American Conference Champion women’s tennis team.
Michigan native Andrea Mosher is in her first year at Detroit as an Academic Coordinator Assistant. In her role, she helps coordinates academic support and leadership development for student-athletes on both the men’s and women’s basketball teams. She will provide academic study table assistance, coordinate tutoring programs and assist in monitoring academic progress of student-athletes. Mosher came to Detroit after two full-time academic positions with her Alma Mater, Illinois State. She was recently an Assistant Director of the Karin L. Bone Athletic Study Center, where she was responsible for academic coaching, recruiting, special event production and other duties essential to progressing the mission of the Athletic Study Center. Prior to that, she worked with student-athlete development as ISU’s Life Skills Director. In that position, she helped coordinate all aspects of career, personal, academic, athletic and community service development programs, including needs assessments, program design, implementation, evaluation and innovation for 400+ student-athletes. That came after serving as the Life Skills graduate assistant and intern for three years. Mosher is originally from Ann Arbor.
