season outlook The men’s soccer program will look to have a successful season in 2010 with new head coach Nicholas Deren at the helm. Deren takes command of the team after serving as an assistant coach at Detroit for the past six seasons.

Lepera started in 17 games for Detroit a season ago. He scored two goals and made two assists to earn six points. Seniors Ken Simon and Jacob Munchiando will see playing time this year at the midfield position along with sophomore Kevin Pinkos. Simon started in 17 of the 18 games he played in during 2009. He recorded 11 points off four goals and three assists. Munchiando and Pinkos also proved to be reliable for the Titans. Munchiando started in 16 games, and Pinkos tallied five points with three assists and a goal.

“I am expecting big things from these guys,” Deren explained. “We are returning a core of the starting lineup, and I expect the freshmen that we recruited to come in here and do a good job as well.” The team only lost one starter from a year ago, and they are fortunate enough to bring back last year’s team MVP, Otieno Victor. Victor started in 17 games as a sophomore and was tied for the team lead in points with 11. He scored four goals and added three assists at the forward position. “I think we have a great group of attacking players,” Deren said. “One very dynamic player that comes to mind is Otieno Victor. We would like to put him in a position where we can utilize his one-onone ability because he is very good. Victor is a complete player who is also a great passer of the ball. He can bring others into the game with his passing ability.” Other forwards who will definitely contribute to the 2010 campaign include Nate Robinson and Ya Ya Toure. “Nate will look to play up top to join Victor,” Deren explained. “He is a great dribbler of the soccer ball, and his rapid play causes problems for the other teams.” Robinson came to Detroit as a sophomore after transferring from Cincinnati. In his first year at UDM, Robinson started in all 18 contests and led the team in assists with six. He also added a goal to end the year with eight points.

Toure is a newcomer who transferred in from Schoolcraft College. While at Schoolcraft, Toure led the team in points with 31 after scoring 14 goals and adding three assists in 2009. His freshman year was equally impressive as he scored 16 goals and dished out four assists. “We expect big things from Ya Ya,” Deren added. “We want him to come in and solidify that front line of players. Sam Seppo is another guy still in the mix, so I think we have four to five very good forwards that can add a lot to our attack on offense.” Coach Deren will have some familiar faces playing midfield this season as Pat Lepera and Ken Simon return for the Titans in 2010. Freshmen Chris Suta and Patrick Soltys will also see some playing time. “Our midfield players are the core of our team,” Deren explained. “I am expecting a breakout year from Pat Lepera. He is going to have more freedom this season which will allow him to move into more of an attacking role this year.”

One area the Titans are looking to improve on from last year would be the team defense. “I spent a lot of time recruiting the backline because we gave up too many goals last year,” Deren said. “This year my goal for our team is to give up less than one goal per game.” Freshmen Adam Bedell and Patrick Soltys will enter the 2010 season with an opportunity to get playing time. Bedell stands at 6-6, and Soltys will also help eliminate aerial threats with his 6-3 frame. Mike Chiandussi and Adam Philp will also play in the backline. Chiandussi started in every game for Detroit last season. He was able to score a goal and add an assist to earn three points for the Titans. Philp only took two shots on goal in 2009, but he played in 17 games and broke into the starting lineup 11 times. “Chiandussi and Philp are both juniors with lots of experience,” Deren said. “They know what’s going on, and will be able to help out the center backs. I think we improved our backline tremendously.” Detroit will return two sophomore goalkeepers who saw lots of action in 2009. Brandon Waterstradt and Martin

2010 Yearbook

Robertson will join freshman Anthony Shepherd as the goalkeepers for UDM. Waterstradt got a bulk of the minutes a season ago starting in 15 games. He held a 2.05 goals against average, and made 76 saves on the year. Robertson only played in three games, but he earned the win in both of the games he started in. The Newmarket, Ontario native made 18 saves in 2009. “Both returning goalkeepers have been through the fire as true freshmen, and therefore have gained valuable experience,” Deren explained. “We added a freshman so it’s still a young group, but the returners will know what to expect coming into this year.” The young nucleus of players will look to mesh together in hopes of having a breakout season. “It’s a core group of sophomores and juniors that make up our team, with a couple seniors that are going to add to the flavor,” Deren explained.

season outlook Deren would like to see the team finish in the top four of the Horizon League standings. If the team is able to reach that goal they will be able to compete in the post-season tournament at the end of the year, which is something Deren has set his sights on. “Being able to play in the conference tournament would be unbelievable, because once you get in anything is possible,” Deren said. “At the end of the day games are won by the players. As coaches we put them in positions to win, but once they cross the line it’s on them to perform. I believe that we have the right guys in the mix to make that happen.” The beginning of the 2010 schedule features some quality non-conference opponents. The Titans open the season on the road in a match against Michigan. “We will play a strong Big Ten team that had a great recruiting class,” Deren said. “It will be a great first test for us.” Detroit will face Cincinnati later that same week on Saturday, Sept. 5th. “Cincinnati is a quality program from the Big East that has a lot of history and success,” Deren added. The Titans have a tournament on the schedule that will take place in South Carolina. The Spinx/Diadora Classic will feature the Titans playing against Furman and the College of Charleston. “After starting the season by playing those four teams we should have a pretty good idea of what we look like as a team,” Deren said.

The rest of October is a mix of conference and non-conference games, with a majority of them being at Titan Field. “I think the way the schedule shapes up all we have to do is handle our business at home and we will be on a nice roll heading into the conference tournament,” Deren said. “I think this team is going to achieve some good things. We are going to play a great brand of soccer, and I think we are going to get some very good results as well. I’m excited for 2010, and am expecting a successful season with all the good players coming in, to mix with the talented players already on the roster.”

The team’s home opener will be against Bowling Green this year on September 15th at Titan Field. Other significant dates for the 2010 schedule include the beginning of Horizon League play which for Detroit is on the road at Loyola on September 24th. Their home conference opener will be against Milwaukee on October 1st.

Nicholas Deren Head Coach 2nd Season 4-4 (.500)

After six seasons on the Titan men’s soccer staff as the lead assistant coach, Nicholas Deren was named head coach at his alma mater, the University of Detroit Mercy, on Dec. 8. After the resignation of former head coach Morris Lupenec, Deren took over as the interim head coach for the remainder of the 2009 season. He guided the Titans to a 4-4 record to end the year. During that stretch the Titans scored 17 goals, and won two of their last four conference games.

Throughout his tenure on the UDM staff, Deren’s main responsibilities included running training sessions, conditioning, recruiting, match preparation, as well as scheduling and fundraising. Deren’s first season as an assistant coach was in 2004. The team was very successful during his first two years with the program. The 2004 team tied the school record with 14 wins. They were able to rattle off eight straight wins, another UDM record. The 2005 team was also successful as they ended the year with 12 victories. Deren has worked with numerous recruiting camps across the state of Michigan. He left the corporate world to follow his passion in soccer, and started coaching club soccer in 2001 with the Vardar Soccer Club. Nearly a year later, Deren created a soccer school and provided training for individuals, small groups, and teams as a camp director. Deren has attended multiple symposiums, and special topic courses. He worked with the Troy Soccer Club from 2003 to 2006, and he was also on the Olympic Development Program coaching staff for the state of Michigan for four years (2005-09). Deren still works as a director of coaching for the Michigan Rush. He began working with the Rush in 2006. “I’ve always enjoyed working with young players because I feel like a part of their technical foundation,” Deren said. “I believe that coaches can have a big impact on young players. A positive influence can play a large role in the development that occurs. Good coaching will give players the fundamentals that they need to make the transition to the next level.” Deren had a successful career as a player. He left Livonia Stevenson High School as the second leading goal scorer in the program’s history. He also finished third in the voting for Mr. Soccer in the state of Michigan as a forward in 1995. Deren’s playing career also includes winning a club national championship with Vardar at the U-18 level. Deren enrolled at Oakland University after a stellar high school career, but transferred to Detroit after two seasons. He was the leading goal scorer for Oakland during his freshman season with 13 goals. Deren also played for the Detroit Dynamite and the Michigan Madness during this time. The Dynamite and Madness were formerly in the USISL, but now they are recognized in the PDL. Deren transferred to Detroit in 1997, but suffered an injury that forced him to take a medical redshirt for the 1998 season. He bounced back however and was named as a team captain in 1999. While with Detroit, Deren netted seven goals, while dishing out five assists at the midfield spot. Deren graduated from UDM in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in history. He holds a USSF “A” License, as well as an Advanced National Diploma from the NSCAA. Deren and his wife Jeanne (a former UDM assistant track coach) reside in Northville, MI, and have two daughters, Evelyn and Amelia, and a son Eli. Deren’s hobbies away from soccer include golf and running.

Titan field

The UDM athletic department proudly unveiled its on-campus soccer/track facility in October of 2007. The facility is on the site of the old natural-grass Titan Field, and includes an A-Turf field, along with a six-lane polyurethane track and areas for the steeplechase and field events. The first event held in the facility was a women’s soccer match against Wright State, which ended in a 1-1 tie. Trina Kochanski scored the field’s first goal just 20 minutes into the contest for the Titans. Two weeks later, the women would post the first Titan victory in the updated facility with a 4-0 blanking of Youngstown State. The field is utilized by the men’s soccer program as well as the UDM men’s and women’s track and field program as well as the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams, the only Division I programs in the state of Michigan. Phase 2 of the project, when completed in the future, will include stadium seating for 2,500-3,000 fans, concession stands, rest rooms, a press box, new scoreboard, lights and a building with space for offices, locker rooms and storage. “The construction of our synthetic field and track is another big step forward for the Titan Athletics Program. I am excited that our student-athletes and coaches, who work so hard day in and day out, will have the on-campus facilities they need to train and compete,” Titans athletic director Keri Gaither said. “The University’s substantial commitment for the new facilities is a critical component of our sport expansion plans.”

athletic director - keri caither Keri Gaither was appointed as the University of Detroit Mercy’s director of athletics in May of 2007, less than six months after being asked to serve as interim director of athletics. Soon after taking the helm of the department, Gaither announced the expansion of the Detroit Titans Division I sports program from 16 to 19 teams with the addition of men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse and men’s tennis, all of which begin play in 2008-09. In her first year, Gaither also expanded the athletic staff by adding eight full-time positions to the department, directed the building and completion of a new $1.6 million all-purpose synthetic turf field and track, and was responsible for the hiring of new men’s basketball coach Ray McCallum and new women’s basketball coach Autumn Rademacher. Gaither is also leading a successful fundraising campaign for the renovation of the men’s basketball office suite and oversaw the building of a new tennis complex that includes eight new courts and a tennis pavilion in addition to a new grass field which will accommodate the lacrosse teams. Recently Gaither was recognized for her strong leadership as UDM’s Director of Athletics when she was appointed to the University’s senior leadership team as a member of the Associate Vice President’s UDM Athletic Director, group in June of 2007. Keri Gaither Gaither also chaired the Detroit Local Organizing Committee for the 2009 NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four, which was played at Ford Field in Detroit, as the University of Detroit Mercy served as the host institution. As the committee’s Chair, Gaither provided strong leadership for the DLOC and maintained ultimate responsibility for the local operations of the Final Four event. Gaither held the same position, in addition to being designated Tournament Director, for the 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball Midwest Regional which broke all previous NCAA Regional attendance records with over 57,000 people each day at Ford Field. For the three years preceding her appointment as A.D., Gaither served as second in command for the Detroit Titans athletic department and also supervised nine Titan women’s varsity sports as the senior associate athletic director. During her tenure in that position, Gaither played an instrumental role in the planning and implementation of women’s golf in 2004 when it became UDM’s 16th varsity team. Prior to her selection as A.D., Gaither had served in several key administrative roles for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics including stints as senior woman administrator and director of business operations. As a current member of the Horizon League’s Executive Council, Gaither is actively involved with League operations. She has served on both the finance and television committees. She is also the council’s liaison to the track and cross country coaches and has served as the past liaison to the sports information directors. Gaither served on the League’s transition team in preparation for the entry of Valparaiso University to the Horizon League in July of 2007. While a member of the 2006 UDM Self-Study Steering Committee for NCAA Athletic Certification, Gaither also served on the Equity and Student-Athletic Welfare Sub-Committee and was designated the campus liaison during the certification process. Shortly after the University received its full certification in April of 2007, Gaither was asked by the NCAA to serve as a Peer-Review Team Member. Past University appointments include chairing UDM’s prioritization sub-committee and serving on various search committees. She is a past Board Member for the University of Detroit Mercy’s Women’s Studies Program and served on the Women’s Studies Program Development Sub-committee. Gaither also participated as a member of the Tourism Action Group (TAG) Hospitality Committee, a group organized by the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau dedicated to training the hospitality industry for Detroit-area events such as the 2005 MLB All-Star Game and Super Bowl XL, as well as future major events. In 2006, Gaither completed the NCAA’s inaugural Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Females, a leadership development program sponsored by the NCAA Office for Diversity and Inclusion and the Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee. The Leadership Institute, designed to address the critical shortage of senior-level minority administrators at NCAA member institutions and conference offices, prepares diverse leaders through a 12-month leadership training and skills development experience. Gaither served as a past steering committee member of the Women’s Leadership Symposium for Intercollegiate Athletics and recently assisted in coordinating its national leadership conference. Gaither is also a member of National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators, National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and Minority Opportunities Athletic Association. She currently serves on the NCAA’s the Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee as well as the Executive Committee of the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association. In March of 2008, Gaither was presented with the Phenomenal Women’s Ashley Gray Legacy Award by the University of Detroit Mercy’s Student Programming Board. This award was presented for her outstanding contribution toward the growth and development of students as the director of athletics at UDM. Graduating magna cum laude from the University of Detroit Mercy, Gaither earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. During her undergraduate studies, she was a two-time recipient of the College of Liberal of Arts’ Economics Student of the Year Award. Gaither and her husband, Brad Trombley, reside in Pleasant Ridge with their two children, Elliott (19), and Kennedy (13).

THE

A number of the UDM Titan athletic programs and student-athletes were involved in community service projects throughout the year. The StudentAthlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) was busy handing out meals to the homeless in downtown Detroit as part of its “Sandwich Bus” initiative. The UDM women’s lacrosse team helped raise money for the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance during one of its home games, while the men’s team played at the Annual Nick Colleluori Classic, a fall scrimmage, to benefit cancer awareness. The women’s basketball squad visited GESU Elementary School for a reading exercise for grades kindergarten through sixth grade, and the men’s program visited God Land Church in Detroit to help distribute Thanksgiving Day dinners to families in need before the Thanksgiving holiday.

The ranks of the Detroit Titans Sports Hall of Fame swelled by 10 in January as the 2010 Induction Class – which includes former Horizon League Men’s Basketball Players of the Year Jermaine Jackson and Rashad Phillips – was

Sports medicine

At the University of Detroit Mercy, the sports medicine staff is committed to providing the best care to all Titan athletes. Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine Michael Miller coordinates and oversees the sports medicine services at UDM for over 250 student-athletes. The sports medicine staff is responsible for assessing athletic injuries and illnesses, administering first aid and CPR care, making medical referrals, and preventing and rehabilitating athletic injuries that occur during the school year. The sports medicine department is under the guidance of Dr. Michael Workings, a family practice physician from the Henry Ford Health System. Dr. Workings also acts as the Team Physician for the Detroit Tigers. Dr. Terrence Lock is back as the team orthopedic, while joining the staff for the 2010-11 season is Dr. Rehal Bhojani and Dr. Patrick JeanPierre, who will provide clinic and game coverage.

strength & Conditioning

The main goal of the Strength and Conditioning Department is to help the student-athlete improve physically and mentally in their respective sport. This will be accomplished in such a way that is safe and efficient for each individual athlete. As the student-athlete participates in these activities we will work to lessen the possibility of injury or reinjury. If an injury should occur, we will work with the Sports Medicine Staff and the student-athlete to complete rehabilitation. Each team will have an individualized program based on their particular sport. Each program takes into account the intensity level, the physical demands, and skill involved in each individual sport and also each individual student-athlete. All teams and individuals will be subject to performance tests that will help design each program and also will help to determine the success of the program.

Joe Tofferi Asst. AD for Strength & Conditioning

Nick Wilson Asst. Strength & Conditioning Coach

Adam Gentry Strength and Conditioning Assistant

Jacob Tabor Strength and Conditioning Assistant

The Strength and Conditioning Staff will work with each individual coach at all times. Each coach will receive updated attendance, evaluation, and comments on a regular basis about each student-athlete. Communication is the key to success in the weight room and on the playing field. The Titans condition and train in the Larry Bleach Weight Room, located in Calihan Hall. All UDM student-athletes are trained under the supervision of two full-time certified strength and conditioning coaches, as well as two intern assistants. Every member of the Titan strength and conditioning staff is assigned a team, which allows daily interaction between the athletes and the coaches. Such interaction is a tremendous asset when developing a program that best serves the athlete and the team. In the past three years, the weight room expanded by over 400 square feet. Olympic style platforms, squat racks, stretch and other auxiliary speed equipment have also been added, all designed and implemented to improve the Titans’ speed and power. The center also features the ONS Performance nutritional shake, which is designed to help every athlete recover from training and conditioning with a supplement increase in their protein and carbohydrate intake. The UDM strength and conditioning staff has not only helped the Titan student-athletes, but professional athletes as well. UDM graduate and current Philadelphia 76ers’ guard Willie Green comes back to use the facilities during the offseason as well as major league pitcher and former Tiger Nate Robertson.

academic support / compliance When talking about students who compete in a varsity sport, the term typically used is “studentathlete.” The word “student” comes first, and that’s the way the University of Detroit Mercy approaches all of its athletic team members. Although performance in competition is important, they are students first, and athletes second, with their performance in the classroom plenty important in Titan Territory. UDM’s Center for Student-Athlete Development, one of the first of its kind, offers programs for academic classes, drug education, student enhancement and works to improve communication skills. All 19 varsity teams are encouraged to take full advantage of the programs offered at the center. The center also heads up the NCAA Life Skills Program, which focuses on the student in student-athlete and how to deal with issues that all student-athletes today must face. Through seminars, guest speakers and NCAA videos, studentathletes are made aware of issues such as gambling and drug and alcohol abuse, and how to deal with these concerns.

progress to make sure they are on the right path toward graduation. In addition, student-athletes are helped with their tutorial needs through the use of the studentrun Learning Center, where professors and students donate their time as tutors.

The center is made possible, in part, by a grant from the NCAA. In conjunction with the staff of the University Learning Center, members of the center’s staff teach UAS 107, “Athletes in Transition,” each year. All freshman and transfer student-athletes must take this course during their studies at UDM. The course deals with how student-athletes can make the transition from high school to college. This important class teaches student-athletes to deal with time and stress management, study skills and the importance of good nutritional habits. Another example of Detroit’s commitment to its student-athletes’ academic excellence is the Athletic Academic Coordinator’s post. Since the position was created, UDM’s graduation rate for student-athletes has steadily risen. Assistant Athletic Director For NCAA Compliance Steve Corder, no stranger to collegiate athletics as he played soccer for Detroit from 199498, and his staff carefully track each Titan’s academic

The student-athletes’ academic progress is closely monitored and study table is set up to assist the Titans with any and all academic areas, including providing tutors and a writing lab. The center is open daily and also has evening hours to work around a student-athlete’s busy schedule. All freshmen must take part in the study table, as well as other student-athletes who have not yet achieved a 2.75 GPA. The University of Detroit Mercy is committed to the principles of institutional control in operating our athletic department. We are responsible for adhering to the rules, regulations and spirit of the NCAA, Horizon League and the University. The University of Detroit Mercy Compliance Office directs this effort and acts a primary resource concerning NCAA rules, regulations and compliance issues. We ensure that our institution complies with all NCAA standards and we are responsible for monitoring all athletic programs to assure compliance. 2010 Yearbook

hall of fame UDM established its Sports Hall of Fame in 1977 in order to honor those student-athletes, coaches and administrators who have helped develop the successful tradition of Titan Athletics. The Hall of Fame now has 112 members, following the 10 latest additions made on Homecoming Weekend on Jan. 26, 2010. The 2002 induction dinner was truly one to remember. The inductees included two of the Titans’ former basketball All-Americans, Terry Tyler and John Long – or Thunder and Lightning, as they were affectionately known during their playing The 2010 Titan Hall of Fame Class is inducted at halftime of the men’s days – as well as the 1960 basketball game against Wright State on Jan. 26. L-R: Adam Walicki, Joe Kopicki, Kim Jess, Pat Adams, Ken Dubois, Additionally, the beautiful Mike Pesci, Maria Pandele new Hall of Fame display (Not Pictured: Jermaine Jackson, Rashad Phillips, Cassandra Pack) in the Calihan Hall lobby was unveiled that night for a crowd which would fill the arena’s main floor during the induction dinner. Long and Tyler were part of one of the winningest eras of Titan basketball, having helped their team to an 8625 record over their four years combined. They helped the Titans to an NCAA Tournament berth in 1977, and an NIT appearance one year later. Long was the only player ever to lead the Titans in scoring for four straight varsity seasons, and he’s still the second-leading point producer in school history. Tyler, meanwhile, is the all-time Detroit leader for blocked shots in a game, a season and a career. He is also second in career field goal percentage and sixth in scoring. The pair’s old coach, none other than Dick Vitale, was the keynote speaker at his former players’ induction dinner. The present-day ESPN/ABC telecaster kept the audience captivated for more than an hour with his memories of coaching the Titans. The 1960 football squad became the first team ever to be inducted into the Hall of Fame en masse. That team finished the season 7-2 – the winningest U-D record of the post-World War II era. Two of those victories, over Cincinnati and Xavier, came by shutout. Future pro stars Larry Vargo, Bruce Maher, Steve Stonebreaker and Jerry Gross were all part of the 1960 Titan roster. The most recent induction class included four former basketball players – Joe Kopicki, Jermaine Jackson, Rashad Phillips and, from the women’s team, Cassandra Pack – as well as former stars from baseball (Pat Adams and Mike Pesci), cross country/track and field (Ken Dubois and Kim Jess), golf (Adam Walicki) and tennis (Maria Pandele).

horizon league Entering its 31st season of operation in the 2009-10 academic year, the Horizon League continues to aspire toward its goal of being one of the nation’s leading athletics conferences while being recognized as a leader in the development of studentathletes as leaders and role models. The Horizon League membership features ten public and private institutions that have impressive academic reputations and a storied tradition of broad-based athletic programs. Current membership includes Butler University, Cleveland State University, the University of Detroit Mercy, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Loyola University Chicago, Valparaiso University, the University of WisconsinGreen Bay, the University of WisconsinMilwaukee, Wright State University and Youngstown State University. The Horizon League’s primary focus is on adding value to the educational experience through its four platforms: athletic performance, academic achievement, community outreach, and personal responsibility and accountability. It is the League’s belief that athletics is a powerful and visible resource tool that can be used to enhance student-athletes’ collegiate experience. T h e Horizon League’s goals are to enhance the holistic university experience for the student-athlete, to create an affiliation of institutions with similar athletic goals, and to adhere to the principals of integrity, diversity, excellence and growth. The Horizon League sponsors competition in 19 sports – nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and tennis) and ten for women (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, tennis and volleyball). The League receives automatic bids to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s volleyball, and for the first time in League history, women’s golf. The Horizon League is headquartered in Indianapolis, the “Amateur Sports Capital of the World,” with offices in the Pan American Plaza (201 S. Capitol Avenue), located a block from Lucas Oil

Stadium and just minutes from Conseco Fieldhouse, the State Capitol Building, Victory Field (home of the Indianapolis Indians) and the NCAA national office.

A Proud History...

Founded on June 16, 1979, as the

Midwestern City Conference with six charter members, the League changed its name to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in 1985 and added women’s sports for the 1986-87 academic year. Charter members of the conference included current members Butler and Loyola as well as the University of Evansville, Oklahoma City University, Oral Roberts University and Xavier University. Among other current members, Detroit joined in 1980, and Cleveland State, UIC, Green Bay, Milwaukee and Wright State came aboard in 1994 (along with Northern Illinois University) in the largest nonmerger conference expansion in history. Youngstown State joining in 2001 and Valparaiso in 2007. On June 4, 2001, the Horizon League unveiled its current name and ushered in a new dynamic direction that has brought the League closer to its stated goal of being one of the nation’s top ten collegiate athletic conferences with a focus on enhancing the student-athletes’ experience by upgrading the League’s market and competitive positions.

Athletic Success...

In the past few years, the Horizon

League has enjoyed unprecedented success on the national stage, highlighted by three Sweet Sixteen appearances (Butler 2003, 2007; Milwaukee 2005) and nine wins in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in the past seven seasons. In other sports, League teams have won at least one game in their respective NCAA Championships each of the last seven seasons in men’s soccer (Milwaukee 2002-05, UIC 2006-08), with UIC just one win away from the College Cup in 2007. In softball, League teams won a game in the national tournament four straight years earlier in the decade (UIC 2002, 2004; Wright State 2003; Green Bay 2005) while advancing into the second round in women’s soccer three of the last five seasons (Detroit 2004, Milwaukee

Horizon League Commissioner Jon LeCrone 2005-06). Green Bay’s women’s basketball team added to that résumé with a victory in the 2007 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship, while Butler’s Victoria Mitchell became the League’s first NCAA individual champion when she won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Academic Success...

Horizon League student-athletes also excel in the classroom as more than 500 have been named to the Academic Honor Roll each of the past seven semesters for carrying a grade-point average of 3.2 or better, including more than 600 for the last four semesters. Twenty-five student-athletes were named to ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic AllDistrict teams in 2008-09, while eight earned Academic All-America honors.

Community Service...

In addition to its athletics success, the

Horizon League has secured a wellearned reputation for its community service initiatives. Each January, member institutions partner with local elementary schools for an art, music and essay contest highlighting the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with winners recognized at League games on the weekend of MLK Day.

Leadership...

Jonathan B. ( Jon) LeCrone is in his

18th year as Commissioner of the Horizon League, having been named to the position on May 11, 1992, and is the fifthlongest tenured commissioner among the 31 Division I conferences. He is the fifth commissioner in League history, succeeding Daniel B. “Tucker” DiEdwardo (1989-92), James W. Shaffer (1984-89), Cecil N. Coleman (1980-84) and James J. McCafferty (1979-80). LeCrone is in the second year of a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Leadership Council after completing a five-year term on the Division I Men’s Basketball Committee.

The Horizon League Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) also has continued a tradition of working with youth in Indianapolis during its annual summer meeting. In addition, several League men’s basketball coaches coached barefoot to support Samaritan’s Feet, and the League’s schools and fans donate to Komen for the Cure for breast cancer awareness during its annual women’s basketball championship. On campus, student-athletes have raised money and awareness for such causes as breast cancer, diabetes and hurricane relief, while hosting blood drives, neighborhood clean-ups, Big Brother/Big Sister programs and more.

Sportsmanship...

One of the Horizon League’s points

of emphasis is fostering collegial environments for competition among student-athletes, coaches, administrators and fans in a pro-active approach. Among the vehicles is the Ethical Conduct Pledge, which is signed each season by studentathletes, coaches, officials, and campus and League administrators.
