Head Coach: Mary Ann Meltzer (Maryland ‘90; Third Season) Assistant Coach: Kelly Gallagher (Washington College ‘06; Third Season)

SEASON PREVIEW The Detroit Titan women’s lacrosse team will look to have a successful season in 2011. Head coach Mary Ann Meltzer has clearly defined the team goals, and the practices have been broken down in order to reach their aspirations. “We want to finish in the top three of the National Lacrosse Conference and ultimately win the conference championship,” Meltzer said. “This group of young women works extremely hard in practice. We just have a great work ethic as a team.” In order to end the season near the top of the conference standings Meltzer believes the team will need to win six to seven games in the NLC. “I think we have more leadership under our belt this year,” Meltzer explained. “Our junior class has been around now for a few years and they have been able to learn a lot. Hopefully that along with a strong finish in the conference tournament from last year will all carry over to this season.” Meltzer added that winning half of their non-conference games is another goal set by the team. “Offensively our goal is to maintain possession of the ball,” Meltzer said. “We may look to slow things down a bit more than we have in the past.” Off the field, Meltzer hopes that the team will be able to improve on their already impressive 3.1 team GPA. This unit had 13 players listed on the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll a year ago. Detroit will open the season with a pair of home games playing against Canisius on February 26, followed by UC Davis on March 6. “Canisius is a good team,” Meltzer said. “We didn’t get off to a good start when we played there last year, so we will look to be more competitive in this matchup. We had the opportunity to play against them in the fall and did a much better job than before so we will look to stay with them.” Detroit will be traveling to Cincinnati for their first road contest of the season to face the Bearcats on March 11. Cincinnati comes from one of the toughest conferences in the country, the Big East. Meltzer believes it will be a good test for her young team. “It’s always a test when you go up against a bigger school,” Meltzer explained. “It will be good for us, and hopefully we will learn a lot from this game. Last year we lost to them 10-6, which is respectable so again like with Canisius, we will look to compete with them this year. Detroit will host Duquesne and Niagara during the middle of March. “I’m glad that we get a shot to play Duquesne this year after coming out flat against them a year ago,” Meltzer said. “This is another team that we got to play against this fall so we will see how much we improved against one of the best teams in the Atlantic 10.” Conference play will begin in late March with matchups against Liberty and Longwood. “Liberty had a great recruiting year, so I’m sure they have gotten better,” Meltzer said. “We will need to focus on our own attack and defense to come away with the win against them this year.” Longwood was crowned as NLC champions in 2010. The Titans have one additional goal on the year for this team. “We have yet to beat Longwood, so that is another goal for our young team, Meltzer added.” The month of April starts with road games against Davidson and High Point. “We played well against Davidson last year,” Meltzer explained. “Unfortunately we came up just short against them. It was a good competitive game and I think this year’s matchup will be the same way.” The Titans have never faced High Point as 2011 marks the first year for them in the NLC. Detroit will return to Titan field on April 8 to face rival Jacksonville. That game sparks a string of home games for the Titans as Presbyterian, Ohio State and Howard round out the remaining home games on the schedule. Three road contests conclude the 2011 regular season. The Titans will face St. Francis, LeMoyne and St. Bonaventure before participating in the NLC Tournament on April 29. Detroit will need a strong effort from each class in order to compete in the NLC. Olivia Mendoza serves as the lone senior on the team. “Olivia has a great attitude, and would do anything for this team,” Meltzer added. “The junior class has been here since the beginning,” Meltzer said. “They are the leaders of this team.” Coach Meltzer went on to express that the team needs to support that group. “We have such a young team that we need girls to step up into leadership roles,” Meltzer added. “We have a large group of sophomores, and they will be relied upon even though they are not upperclassmen. We expect a lot from that group.” The Titans added three freshmen, two soccer players, and a former basketball player to the roster in hopes of finishing the season with a full team. “We had to play a man down last year against Ohio State because of injuries,” Meltzer said. “I added some athletes to the roster this year. They continue to improve each day and I am excited to see how they will play this season.”

Goalie Mary Beth Flanagan will be in goal for Detroit during 2011. Flanagan played in 12 games with seven starts a year ago. She posted a 2-5 record during her seven starts as a freshman. Flanagan made 111 saves posting a .464 save percentage. She logged over 500 minutes in goal and faced nearly 300 shots. “Mary Beth has a great attitude,” Meltzer explained. “She continues to learn and always comes to practice with intensity. She truly loves the game.” Flanagan’s best game as a Titan came against Longwood. She ended that game with a career-high 19 saves. Defense Alycsa Valentine and Britany Busch will lead the defensive unit. “Alycsa is great with her slides, and Britany’s hard work has really helped her get to where she is today,” Meltzer said. Newcomers Jenna Alberts, Rebekah Dornbos, and Morgan Lear will also help throughout the course of the season. “Jenna is a talented freshman that may have the opportunity to come in and play defense for us,” Meltzer said. Dornbos is one of two members of the Detroit soccer team that decided to pick up another sport. “Beka is learning quite well,” Meltzer explained. “She understands off-ball marking and man-to-man principles. It will take some time and some reps for her to get comfortable, but she has the talent to be a good player.” Lear is another talented freshman on the roster, yet she will be unable to play until midway through the season due to an injury. “Once Morgan gets back to full strength she will be able to help with her speed.” Attack Zaynib Hamze, Anna Eidem, Lindsey Saunders, and Erin Campbell highlight the attack position. Eidem was second on the team a year ago with 69 points off 55 goals and 14 assists. She started in all 20 games for the Titans. Also starting in all 20 games was sophomore Zaynib Hamze. Hamze ended the year with 24 points (16g, 8a). “Anna and Z played well for us last year,” Meltzer said. “We are looking for Anna to step up in the big games for us, and for Z to score more. Zaynib is a scrappy type of player that gets a lot of loose balls for us. We hope that she can convert those loose balls into goals.” Campbell and Saunders each had sound freshmen seasons for Detroit. Campbell started in 13 games before suffering a season-ending injury. She scored 16 goals through 13 games and also added four assists for 20 points. “Erin has the best stick work on the team,” Meltzer said. “She is a player that can create, feed, and shoot.” Saunders proved to be a reliable scoring threat in her first year as a Titan. She scored 20 goals and made four assists to end the year with 24 points. “Lindsey is very consistent, but we want her to be more aggressive this year,” Meltzer added. Olivia Mendoza, Jaimee Stoner, and Megan Wallace will provide leadership to this young team. Mendoza is the only senior on the roster. “Olivia is a great stick for us on the attack,” Meltzer said. “She has great attitude would do anything for the team.” Stoner and Wallace also fall into that role as Wallace will serve as a captain for 2011. Stoner proved that she could help the team with very little lacrosse experience. “Jaimee helped us out at the end of last year at the conference tournament,” Meltzer explained. “We were low on numbers and had some injury problems so she jumped into the lineup and helped out immediately. Jaimee is more of an offensive player that we would like to move to midfield. She has been working on her defense a lot. Her basketball background helps her transition to lacrosse. She understands the concepts she just needs to get used to having a stick in her hand.” Tara Grady and Abby McCollum will also look to impact the team from the attack position. “Tara will definitely get some time attacking, and Abby is much like Jaimee in that she has to get used to the game of lacrosse,” Meltzer said. “Once Abby gets more comfortable with her stick work she will become a threat on the attack.” McCollum is also a member of the women’s soccer team at Detroit. Midfield Megan Callahan, Emily Boissonneault, and Corina Mahorn complete a highly talented midfield group. Boissonneault was the head of the Detroit scoring attack a year ago. The junior led the team in goals (68), assists (15), and points (83). “Emily is obviously an offensive threat,” Meltzer said. “What sets her apart as a complete player is her ability to play good defense.” Mahorn will be a focal point on the team as she led the team with 48 draw controls in 2010. The junior also collected 49 ground balls and caused 22 turnovers. Scoring didn’t seem to be a problem either, as she ended the year with 38 goals and eight assists on her way to recording 46 points. “Corina uses her speed to get a lot of touches on the ball,” Meltzer said. “We would like for her to step up and have a big year.” Callahan represents the third person of this midfield trio. The defensive minded sophomore came up with 25 ground balls last year, while also causing 10 turnovers. “Callahan serves as a vocal leader on this young team,” Meltzer said. “As I said before this team has such a great work ethic, and we hope that it will pay off for us this year,” Meltzer explained. “The girls gave us everything they had last year even if that meant playing a man down. They played with heart and I hope we can bring that with us into this season. If we can mix that effort with a great attitude and a few new players there is no doubt that we will do much better.”

mary ann

meltzer head coach - third season

Mary Ann Meltzer is now in her third season as the head coach of the women’s lacrosse program. Meltzer guided the Titans to a 7-13 overall record a season ago, including a 3-3 mark in the National Lacrosse Conference. Detroit opened the 2010 campaign by winning two of their first three games. The Titans took down St. Francis University (PA) 16-5 to start the season, and then put together an 18-10 victory against Presbyterian on Feb. 26. After multiple away games Detroit returned to Titan Field to record back-to-back victories in early April. UDM defeated Howard University 20-5, and came back with an equally impressive game in a 19-5 win over Liberty University. The Titans also picked up a victory in the National Lacrosse Tournament towards the end of the season. Detroit defeated Presbyterian 17-16 in the first round of the tournament, but fell to the top seed Longwood in the next round by the score of 18-6. Detroit ended their 2010 season with a 17-13 loss to Jacksonville. 2009 marked the inaugural season for women’s lacrosse at Detroit. Meltzer’s helped the program win their first-ever game 20-1 over Howard University. UDM finished out the year with a 5-9 record that included an opening round 18-9 win in the National Lacrosse Conference tournament over Presbyterian before ending the campaign with a loss to Longwood. Meltzer came to UDM from the University of Michigan, where she was head coach of the Wolverines' club lacrosse team. In five seasons at U-M, she compiled a 93-22 record (.809 winning percentage), reaching the Women's Division Intercollegiate Associates national tournament finals in 2006 and the semi-finals in both 2003 and '04. She coached 10 All-Americans during her tenure in Ann Arbor. Meltzer was selected National Collegiate Club Coach of the Year in 2006 and again in 2007. Meltzer played collegiate lacrosse at the University of Maryland before graduating in 1990. Meltzer was selected as an All-American in 1989 and 1990. As a senior Meltzer was recognized as the National Offensive Player of the Year. She also played in the North-South All-Star Game. Additionally, Meltzer was a member of the United States National Lacrosse Team from 1988 to 1993. "The fact that Mary Ann has such a solid, successful background as both a coach and a college player is a win-win for us," Gaither said. "She has a wealth of experience in lacrosse and she brings a great knowledge of the game with her to UDM. With women's golf (2004) and lacrosse having been added at UDM within a short period of time, I think it shows just how committed our University is when it comes to offering additional Division I opportunities for female student-athletes." Meltzer was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference 50th Anniversary Women's Lacrosse Team in 2002 and she was also inducted into the Ohio chapter of the U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2002, having played her high school lacrosse in Columbus. Meltzer's coaching career began at nearby Birmingham Seaholm High School, where she compiled a five-year record of 78-23 (.772 winning percentage). She led Seaholm to three state championships (1998, 1999, 2001), and coached four high school All-Americans, all of whom went on to play college lacrosse. Meltzer was named Midwest High School Coach of the Year in 1999. Off the field, Meltzer has been a member of the Board of Directors of U.S. Lacrosse since 2004, and chairperson of the WDIA since 2006. She has also served as vice president of the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association since 2004. Meltzer and her family reside in Northville, MI.

kelly

gallagher assistant coach - third season

University of Detroit Mercy head women’s lacrosse coach Mary Ann Meltzer hired Kelly Gallagher as the firstever women's lacrosse assistant coach. Gallagher is now entering her third season as an assistant with the program. Gallagher was instrumental in helping Meltzer during the Titans’ inaugural season, which saw the Titans post a 5-9 record that included an opening round victory at the National Lacrosse Conference Tournament over Presbyterian. In 2010, Gallagher helped the Titans post a 7-13 record, including a 3-3 mark in conference play. Detroit won two of their first three contests, and once again defeated Presbyterian in the first round of the NLC Tournament. “I feel very fortunate to have Kelly on staff, not only because of her enthusiasm, but also due to her experience in dealing with lacrosse in non-traditional areas, which I know will be an asset to us here at UDM," said Meltzer. Gallagher came to Detroit after serving as an assistant coach for the women’s program at Muhlenberg College. While with the Mules, Gallagher was involved in all aspects of recruiting, scouting of opponents and coordinating game film operations. In addition, she oversaw day-to-day operations of the program and assisted with the planning of both games and practices. While at Muhlenberg, Gallagher organized and managed a high school clinic, as well as assisting in the development of off-season training workouts for the student-athletes. Off the field, Gallagher was the fundraiser and community service team liaison and she created an annual newsletter for alumnae, parents and friends of the women’s lacrosse program. Gallagher attended Washington College in Chestertown, MD, where she played lacrosse from 2003-06 and served as team captain senior season. In 2003, the Shorewomen were the runner-up at the ECAC Regional Lacrosse Championship. Gallagher graduated from Washington College in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in history and a minor in political science.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR Keri Gaither was appointed as University of Detroit Mercy’s Director of Athletics in May of 2007, less than six months after being asked to serve as Interim Director of Athletics. Soon after taking the helm of Titan athletics, Gaither announced the expansion of the Detroit Titans Division I sports program from 16 to 19 teams with the addition of men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse and men’s tennis, all of which began play in 2008-09. In her first two years, Gaither also expanded the athletic staff by adding eight full-time positions to the department, directed the building and completion of a new $1.6 million all-purpose synthetic turf field and track, and was responsible for the hiring of men’s basketball coach Ray McCallum, women’s basketball coach Autumn Rademacher, and softball coach Sunny Jones. Gaither recently completed a successful fundraising campaign for the renovation of the men’s basketball office suite and recently completed tennis complex that includes eight new tennis courts, a tennis pavilion and a new grass field which will accommodate the lacrosse and soccer teams. Gaither was recognized for her strong leadership as UDM’s Director of Athletics when she was appointed to the University of Detroit Mercy’s (UDM) senior leadership team as a member of the Associate Vice President’s group in June of 2007. UDM Athletic Director, For the three years preceding her appointment as A.D., Gaither served as second in command Keri Gaither for the Detroit Titans Athletic Department and also supervised nine Titan women’s varsity sports as the Senior Associate Athletic Director. During her tenure as Senior Associate A.D., Gaither played an instrumental role in the planning and implementation of women’s golf in 2004 when it became UDM’s 16th varsity team. Prior to her selection as A.D., Gaither had served in several key administrative roles for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics including stints as Senior Woman Administrator and Director of Business Operations. Gaither Chaired the Detroit Local Organizing Committee (DLOC) for the 2009 NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four which was played in front of a record-setting crowd of 72,922 at Ford Field in Detroit as the University of Detroit Mercy served as the host institution. As the DLOC Chair, Gaither provided strong leadership for the DLOC and maintained ultimate responsibility for the local operations of the Final Four event. Gaither held the same position, in addition to being designated Tournament Director, for the 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball Midwest Regional. As a current member of the Horizon League’s Executive Council, Gaither is actively involved with League operations. She currently serves on the League’s Men’s Basketball Strategic Planning Committee and has served on both the finance and television committees. In July of 2010, Gaither was appointed a new member of the Executive Committee of the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association. She is one of just 13 members serving on the Executive Committee, which works on behalf of the membership of the D1-AAA, in addition to its President and five other officers. Gaither was also appointed to the NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee (MOIC) in September of 2009. As one of six Division I members on the 15-person committee, Gaither is currently in year two of a four-year term. The MOIC was formed to review issues related to the interests of ethnic minorities and women with a focus on education and welfare of minority student-athletes, as well as the enhancement of opportunities for ethnic minorities and women in coaching, athletics administration, officiating and the NCAA governance structure. In March of 2008, Gaither was presented with the Phenomenal Women’s Ashley Gray Legacy Award by the University of Detroit Mercy’s Student Programming Board. This award was presented for her outstanding contribution toward the growth and development of students as the Director of Athletics at UDM. Gaither was also honored in September of 2008 when she was named one of Crain’s Detroit Business’ “2008 Women to Watch” for her goals and initiatives in the Detroit Titans athletics program and her leadership in serving as chair of Detroit’s Local Organizing Committee for the 2009 NCAA Final Four. While a member of the 2006 UDM Self-Study Steering Committee for NCAA Athletic Certification, Gaither also served on the Equity and Student-Athletic Welfare Sub-Committee and was designated the campus liaison during the certification process. Shortly after the University received its full certification in April of 2007, Gaither was asked by the NCAA to serve as a Peer-Review Team Member. Past University appointments include chairing UDM’s prioritization sub-committee and serving on various search committees. She is a past Board Member for the University of Detroit Mercy’s Women’s Studies Program and served on the Women’s Studies Program Development Sub-committee. She also participated as a member of the Tourism Action Group (TAG) Hospitality Committee, a group organized by the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitor Bureau dedicated to training the hospitality industry for Detroit-area events such as the 2005 MLB All Star Game, Super Bowl XL, as well as future major events. In 2006, the Titan AD completed the NCAA’s inaugural Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Females, a leadership development program sponsored by the NCAA Office for Diversity and Inclusion and the Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee. The Leadership Institute, designed to address the critical shortage of senior-level minority administrators at NCAA member institutions and conference offices, prepares diverse leaders through a 12-month leadership training and skills development experience. Gaither served as a past steering committee member of the Women’s Leadership Symposium for Intercollegiate Athletics and recently assisted in coordinating its national leadership conference. Gaither is also a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA), the Minority Opportunities Athletic Association (MOAA), and the Black Coaches Association (BCA). Graduating magna cum laude from the University of Detroit Mercy, Gaither earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. During her undergraduate studies, she was a two-time recipient of the College of Liberal of Arts’ Economics Student of the Year Award. Gaither and her husband, Brad Trombley, reside in Pleasant Ridge with their two children, Elliott (19), a junior at the University of Detroit Mercy and daughter Kennedy (13).

1977, during the University’s Centennial year, in order to honor those studentathletes, coaches and administrators who have helped develop the successful tradition of Titan Athletics. TITANS OUT IN THE COMMUNITY A number of the UDM Titan athletic programs and student-athletes were involved in community service projects throughout the year. The StudentAthlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) was busy handing out meals to the homeless in downtown Detroit as part of its “Sandwich Bus” initiative. The UDM women’s lacrosse team helped raise money for the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance during one of its home games, while the men’s team played at the Annual Nick Colleluori Classic, a fall scrimmage, to benefit cancer awareness. The women’s basketball squad visited GESU Elementary School for a reading exercise for grades kindergarten through sixth grade, and the men’s program visited God Land Church in Detroit to help distribute Thanksgiving Day dinners to families in need before the Thanksgiving holiday. TITANS RECEIVE HIGH MARKS IN LATEST NCAA APR REPORT No less than eight Titan athletic teams brought home perfect scores in the NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate report issued in June for 2008-09. At the same time, every one of Detroit’s varsity teams registered a multi-year APR above the minimum standard (925) established by the NCAA. And no contemporaneous or historical penalties were cited against UDM as all varsity teams met NCAA standards. Eight teams which received perfect 1000’s for 2008-09 are men’s and women’s fencing, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s track and field and softball.

SPORTS MEDICINE At the University of Detroit Mercy, the sports medicine staff is committed to providing the best care to all Titan athletes. Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine Michael Miller coordinates and oversees the sports medicine services at UDM for over 250 student-athletes. The sports medicine staff is responsible for assessing athletic injuries and illnesses, administering first aid and CPR care, making medical referrals, and preventing and rehabilitating athletic injuries that occur during the school year.

The sports medicine department is under the guidance of Dr. Michael Workings, a family practice physician from the Henry Ford Health System. Dr. Workings also acts as the Team Physician for the Detroit Tigers. Dr. Terrence Lock is back as the team orthopedic, while joining the staff for the 2010-11 season is Dr. Rehal Bhojani and Dr. Patrick JeanPierre, who will provide clinic and game coverage. The athletic training facility is located at Calihan Hall. This training facility is equipped with a taping and first aid station, treatment and modality tables, hydrotherapy whirlpools, and rehabilitative equipment. The goals of the University of Detroit Mercy Sports Medicine Department are to prevent athletic injuries as much as possible through effective injury prevention programs, and to return injured athletes to their previous competitive status in the safest and quickest manner possible.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING The main goal of the Strength and Conditioning Department is to help the student-athlete improve physically and mentally in their respective sport. This will be accomplished in such a way that is safe and efficient for each individual athlete. As the student-athlete participates in these activities we will work to lessen the possibility of injury or re-injury. If an injury should occur, we will work with the Sports Medicine Staff and the student-athlete to complete rehabilitation. Each team will have an individualized program based on their particular sport. Each program takes into account the intensity level, the physical demands, and skill involved in each individual sport and also each individual student-athlete. All teams and individuals will be subject to performance tests that will help design each program and also will help to determine the success of the program.

Joe Tofferi Asst. AD for Strength & Conditioning

The Strength and Conditioning Staff will work with each individual coach at all times. Each coach will receive updated attendance, evaluation, and comments on a regular basis about each student-athlete. Communication is the key to success in the weight room and on the playing field. The Titans condition and train in the Larry Bleach Weight Room, located in Calihan Hall. All UDM student-athletes are trained under the supervision of two full-time certified strength and conditioning coaches, as well as two intern assistants. Every member of the Titan strength and conditioning staff is assigned a team, which allows daily interaction between the athletes and the coaches. Such interaction is a tremendous asset when developing a program that best serves the athlete and the team. In the past three years, the weight room expanded by over 400 square feet. Olympic style platforms, squat racks, stretch and other auxiliary speed equipment have also been added, all designed and implemented to improve the Titans’ speed and power. The center also features the ONS Performance nutritional shake, which is designed to help every athlete recover from training and conditioning with a supplement increase in their protein and carbohydrate intake. The UDM strength and conditioning staff has not only helped the Titan studentathletes, but professional athletes as well. UDM graduate and current New Orleans Hornet guard Willie Green comes back to use the facilities during the offseason as well as major league pitcher and former Tiger Nate Robertson.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT When talking about students who compete in a varsity sport, the term typically used is “studentathlete.” The word “student” comes first, and that’s the way the University of Detroit Mercy approaches all of its athletic team members. Although performance in competition is important, they are students first, and athletes second, with their performance in the classroom plenty important in Titan Territory. UDM’s Center for Student-Athlete Development, one of the first of its kind, offers programs for academic classes, drug education, student enhancement and works to improve communication skills. All 19 varsity teams are encouraged to take full advantage of the programs offered at the center. The center also heads up the NCAA Life Skills Program, which focuses on the student in student-athlete and how to deal with issues that all student-athletes today must face. Through seminars, guest speakers and NCAA videos, studentathletes are made aware of issues such as gambling and drug and alcohol abuse, and how to deal with these concerns.

Steve Corder Asst. AD for NCAA Compliance

Amy Paling Asst. Director of Compliance/ Academic Cord.

The student-athletes’ academic progress is closely monitored and study table is set up to assist the Titans with any and all academic areas, including providing tutors and a writing lab. The center is open daily and also has evening hours to work around a student-athlete’s busy schedule. All freshmen must take part in the study table, as well as other student-athletes who have not yet achieved a 2.75 GPA.

The center is made possible, in part, by a grant from the NCAA. In conjunction with the staff of the University Learning Center, members of the center’s staff teach UAS 107, “Athletes in Transition,” each year. All freshman and transfer student-athletes must take this course during their studies at UDM. The course deals with how student-athletes can make the transition from high school to college. This important class teaches student-athletes to deal with time and stress management, study skills and the importance of good nutritional habits. Another example of Detroit’s commitment to its student-athletes’ academic excellence is the Athletic Academic Coordinator’s post. Since the position was created, UDM’s graduation rate for student-athletes has steadily risen. Assistant Athletic Director For NCAA Compliance Steve Corder, no stranger to collegiate athletics as he played soccer for Detroit from 199498, and his staff carefully track each Titan’s academic progress to make sure they are on the right path toward graduation. In addition, student-athletes are helped with their tutorial needs through the use of the studentrun Learning Center, where professors and students donate their time as tutors.

DETROIT TITAN UDM established its Sports Hall of Fame in 1977 in order to honor those student-athletes, coaches and administrators who have helped develop the successful tradition of Titan Athletics. The Hall of Fame now has 112 members, following the 10 latest additions made on Homecoming Weekend on Jan. 26, 2010. The 2002 induction dinner was truly one to remember. The inductees included two of the Titans’ former basketball AllAmericans, Terry Tyler and John Long – or Thunder The 2010 Titan Hall of Fame Class is inducted at halftime of the men’s and Lightning, as they basketball game against Wright State on Jan. 26. were affectionately known during their playing days – as well as the 1960 Titan football team as a unit. Additionally, the beautiful new Hall of Fame display in the Calihan Hall lobby was unveiled that night for a crowd which would fill the arena’s main floor during the induction dinner. Long and Tyler were part of one of the winningest eras of Titan basketball, having helped their team to an 8625 record over their four years combined. They helped the Titans to an NCAA Tournament berth in 1977, and an NIT appearance one year later. Long was the only player ever to lead the Titans in scoring for four straight varsity seasons, and he’s still the second-leading point producer in school history. Tyler, meanwhile, is the all-time Detroit leader for blocked shots in a game, a season and a career. He is also second in career field goal percentage and sixth in scoring. The pair’s old coach, none other than Dick Vitale, was the keynote speaker at his former players’ induction dinner. The present-day ESPN/ABC telecaster kept the audience captivated for more than an hour with his memories of coaching the Titans. The 1960 football squad became the first team ever to be inducted into the Hall of Fame en masse. That team finished the season 7-2 – the winningest U-D record of the post-World War II era. Two of those victories, over Cincinnati and Xavier, came by shutout. Future pro stars Larry Vargo, Bruce Maher, Steve Stonebreaker and Jerry Gross were all part of the 1960 Titan roster. The most recent induction class included four former basketball players – Joe Kopicki, Jermaine Jackson, Rashad Phillips and, from the women’s team, Cassandra Pack – as well as former stars from baseball (Pat Adams and Mike Pesci), cross country/track and field (Ken Dubois and Kim Jess), golf (Adam Walicki) and tennis (Maria Pandele).

CITY OF DETROIT Having celebrated its tricentennial in 2001, Greater Detroit has the best of the old and the most promising of the new. From Greektown to Bricktown, Detroit has it all. The oldest city in the Midwest, Detroit was discovered in 1701 and has since become the center of business and recreation for millions. It is the largest city in Michigan and the 11th largest in the United States. Encompassing three counties — Wayne, Oakland and Macomb — the Metropolitan Detroit area spans 2,026 square miles and is home to 4.4 million people, nearly one million of whom live within the City of Detroit. Detroit’s vibrant, 75-acre Civic Center is a riverfront mecca for convention, entertainment, festival and sporting activities. Home to Cobo Conference/Exhibition Center and Arena, Joe Louis Arena and Philip A. Hart Plaza, the Civic Center is adjacent to some of the area’s finest hotels, top-notch restaurants and the famous Renaissance Center. Cobo Conference/Exhibition Center underwent a $200 million expansion, which was completed in 1989 and increased the facility’s exhibit space to 720,000 square feet, making it one of the nation’s largest convention centers. Renaissance Center, now the world headquarters for General Motors, is the city’s largest office complex, with seven gleaming towers of activity located on the Detroit riverfront. The 73-story Marriott Hotel is housed within this symbol of downtown development. Long known as the automobile capital of the world, the Detroit area is headquarters to all of the major automobile companies. While a lot of the area’s industry centers around

52

the “horseless carriage,” Detroit is more than a smokestack town. Home to 16 of the Fortune 1000 firms, greater Detroit ranks sixth among U.S. cities in total spendable income. A short walk from the riverfront and the rigors of business is the enjoyment of exciting ethnic nightlife, known to Detroiters as Greektown. A two-block area of authentic Greek food and entertainment, Greektown became an even more invigorating locale in recent years with the addition of the Greektown Casino, one of three major casinos operating near downtown. One can enjoy art and scan the shelves that house 2.5 million books in the Detroit Public Library; and experience Michigan’s Underground Railroad movement at the Museum of African-American History. Americana at its finest is displayed at Dearborn’s Henry Ford and Greenfield Village.
