TRAINING COURSES The Titans have a number of training courses available to them as they pursue the Horizon League Championship with two main courses that they run on throughout the year. One course is Cass Benton Park in Northville, the site for the Annual Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invitational, located just off I-96 and a short drive from campus. The course provides an extensive challenge as it is one of the oldest and hilliest areas of the park. Detroit also utilizes Kensington Metro Park in Milford, where UDM hosted the 2009 Horizon League Championships and the 2008 Michigan Intercollegiate. Kensington covers 4,481 acres featuring a wooded hilly terrain that surrounds beautiful Kent Lake. Each year more than two and a half million visitors will make their way to Kensington. The Titans also train nearby at Palmer Park, Heritage Park, Martin Road Park and Belle Isle. Palmer Park is located on 7 Mile and Woodward. The property includes Palmer Woods and the Detroit Golf Club. The area is home to some of Detroit’s premier neighborhoods, including Palmer Woods, Sherwood Forest, University District and Green Acres. Heritage Park in Farmington Hills is a 211-acre park with more than four miles of trails for hiking and cross-country skiing, a large picnic area, playground, sand volleyball courts, and an in-line hockey rink. Martin Road Park in Ferndale is the city’s main recreation area. Parks and Forestry is responsible for the maintenance of 11 neighborhood parks in Ferndale along with three mini-parks comprising 81 acres. Belle Isle is a 982 acre island park on the Detroit River managed by the Detroit Recreation Department. It is connected to the rest of the city by the MacArthur Bridge. It is the largest island park in the United States and the third largest island in the Detroit River after Grosse Ile and Fighting Island.

DIRECTOR OF CROSS COUNTRY Guy Murray enters his 19th season at the University of Detroit Mercy where he serves as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country for both the men and women. A Titan fan from his day as a standout runner, Murray has already accounted for nine conference championships in the Titan trophy case. Murray most recently guided the men’s cross country team to a fifth place finish at the Horizon League Championship. A strong senior class that included Patrick Liederbach, Alex Harris, Ryan Ayala, Kevin Smalley, Kevin Wozniak, and Brian Greenhoe helped lead the Titans to a successful 2010 season. Patrick Liederbach was a four time All-League performer under Murray’s direction. He became just the fifth Titan in school history to receive multiple conference honors. Liederbach also finished in the top 100 at the regional four times making him just the third Titan harrier to reach that achievement. The men’s team wrapped up the 2010 campaign with a trip to the NCAA Great Lakes Regional where they placed 22nd overall with a score of 639. The women’s team placed eighth at the 2010 Horizon League Championship. Murray had his young team peak at the perfect time as five UDM runners came up with their 5k PR at the event. Detroit ended the year by taking 32nd place at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. A four-year letter winner on the Titan cross country and track teams from 1985-89, Murray graduated Magna Cum Laude from Detroit with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science in May of 1989. At Detroit, he won the Dominick Taddonio Cross Country MVP award in 1988 and the University of Detroit’s President’s Award, the athletic department’s highest honor, for the top senior student-athlete in 1989. He was named to the All-Midwestern Collegiate Conference (MCC) Cross Country Team in 1986 and the All-MCC Track and Field Team in 1989.

GUY MURRAY He was an Olympic Trial Qualifier in the marathon in 1999 after he finished 19th at the Grandma’s Marathon with a personal best time of 2:21:18. At the Olympic Trials in 2000, Murray placed 57th, with a mark of 2:35:16. Following graduation he joined the coaching staff of Earl Clark Jr. and Kevin Donner as an assistant before being elevated to his current title in 1993. For the next two years, he was the head coach for the men’s and women’s track and field program and the women’s cross country team, while overseeing the men’s unit until Detroit Hallof-Fame coach Earl Clark stepped down in 1995. As an assistant coach, he was responsible for coaching five MCC individual track and field event champions as well as two MCC track and field Most Outstanding Performers, all while completing his master’s degree in sports administration at nearby Wayne State University. As a head coach, his teams have accrued many honors and championships, The men’s and women’s teams swept the 1996 indoor MCC titles. The women’s squad also won back-to-back indoor crowns in 1998 and ‘99, and took home the outdoor titles in 1999 and 2000. The men’s team took home a share of the indoor title in 2000, with the women bringing home another indoor crown in 2002 and the men’s success in 2003 winning the outdoor title. In 2005, the Titan women were Horizon League runners-ups and the men were most recently Indoor Horizon League runner-ups in 2011. Teams that have been coached by Murray also excel in the classroom as the men’s squad was honored in 2004 by the USTFCCCA as it brought home the highest combined grade point average in the country. The trend continues as the men were honored for the ninth-straight year in 2011, as one of the nation’s All-Academic Teams. Their 3.41 GPA was the highest among the four Horizon League teams on the academic list as well as the highest GPA of any Division I team in the state of Michigan that was honored. The women’s team was also recognized as an All-Academic Team for the third year in a row, after recording a 3.39 GPA. The GPA was the third highest out of the five conference teams honored and was also the second best out of the five Division I Michigan schools that made the mark. Individually, eight different Titans have been selected Academic All-America by the USTFCCCA: Kim Hemstreet (2002), Kim Jess (1995), Andrea Karpala (2003, 2004, 2005), Ryan Byrne (2005, 2008), Krista Switzer (2006), Sinisa Simic (2007) and Amanda Smith (2008). Two Murray-coached athletes have qualified for the NCAA National Championships in Hemstreet (2002, cross country) and Paul Caraballo (1997, Track and Field). Caraballo was named an NCAA All-American in 1997 after he placed seventh in the high jump. In all, four athletes have provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship. Since its inception in 2003, the Titans have had a qualifier for the outdoor regional championship each year. In addition to his team’s successes, Murray has been named league Coach of the Year for women’s outdoor track twice (1999, 2000), men’s outdoor once (2003) and seven times for his indoor success (women’s in 1994, ‘96, ‘98, ‘99 and 2002 and men’s in ‘96 and 2000). Murray and his wife Patricia live in Redford with their ten-year-old daughter Kaitlin Renee and fouryear old son Colin.

ASST. COACH EMILI JACKSON Emili Jackson returns for her fifth season as an assistant coach for track and field and cross country. At UDM, Jackson works primarily with the women’s distance runners in track as well as the women’s cross country team. In her five years with the cross country program, Jackson has helped tremendously, as the Titans’ capped off the 2008 season with five runners in the Great Lakes Regional for the first full scoring squad (32nd) since 2004. In 2009, UDM placed 29th with 882 points at the GLR, and sixth overall at the Horizon League Championship with a score of 150. She began her coaching career in strength and conditioning at Wayne State in 2004. She then added two years (2005-07) of track and field/cross country coaching experience at Salesian High School in Richmond, CA. There, she coached two state meet qualifiers, including one state champion.
In July of 2007, she was certified as a USA Track & Field Level Two coach. She continues to run in her off time recently helping a team comprised mostly of UDM Alumni, staff and current Titans take ninth at the Great Lakes Relay in the summer of 2009. Jackson graduated from Central Michigan in 2003 after running both cross country and track. She lives in Royal Oak along with her husband Matthew and their newborn daughter Emerson.

2011 MEN’S SEASON OUTLOOK The 2011 team will have some big shoes to fill as the graduating class from a year ago put their stamp on the program. “This will be a very interesting year as we replace a talented senior class,” Head Coach Guy Murray said. “It is hard to project what will happen, but I hope that our guys respond to the opportunity they have. We could have a very good pack. The big question will be how to replace the low number that Patrick Liederbach provided each meet.” This year’s senior class includes Bob Radlich, Matt Mahler, Derek Hoerman, and Erik Westbrook. Radlich made a solid contribution to the team during his junior season. He set his 8k personal record at the Louisville Classic with a time of 26:46. Radlich also finished the year strong by setting his 10k PR at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional with a time of 35:09. Additional highlights from the 2010 season include taking 11th at the 2010 Golden Grizzly Open (19:55 – 6k) and placing 36th at the Titan Invite (22:05). “Bob has been steady over the past two years and I believe he is in line for a good year.” Murray said. “He has trained well and therefore has improved.” Erik Westbrook had an up-and-down junior campaign as he dealt with an injury. Westbrook started the year strong with a 39th place finish at the Golden Grizzly Open (21:34 – 6k). He followed that performance finishing 59th overall at the Detroit Titan invite (23:04 – 4 Mile). Westbrook’s final race of the season was at the Horizon League Championships. He took 63rd overall with a time of 27:32. “Erik continued to get better after injuries slowed his progress on a good sophomore year,” Murray added. “He is coming off a solid track and field season and I look for him to be a contributor this year.” Matt Mahler and Derek Hoerman were limited in 2010 with injury issues. Mahler only competed in the Detroit Invite. He finished 47th with a time of 22:37. “Matt has the ability to help this team,” Murray said. “He is healthy and ready to go.” Hoerman set his four mile PR at the Detroit Invite clocking in at 22:26. He also ran at the HL Championships taking 81st overall with a time of 28:33. “In order to move up from fifth in the Horizon League, we will need someone to finish in the top-20 at the HL meet,” Murray added. UDM has two juniors on the roster. Edwin Gay and Chris Smalley are each poised for a good season. “Edwin is an experienced runner who has shown the potential to be ready for a good year,” Murray said. Gay participated in five races during the 2010 season and set three personal records. He posted his fastest four mile time at the Titan Invite placing 19th overall (21:18). Two weeks later, Gay set his 8k PR at the Louisville Classic crossing the finish line in 25:57 for 37th overall. Gay ended his season at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional by setting his 10k PR with a time of 33:47. Smalley was active for Detroit a year ago as he competed in all but two races in 2010. “Chris has potential and should improve this season,” Murray said. Smalley set his 8k PR at the Louisville Classic last year with a time of 28:07. He also ran well at the HL Championships, where he finished 79th overall with a time of 28:31.

2011 MEN’S SEASON OUTLOOK Martin Nelkie and Sam Felton make up the sophomore class. Nelkie ran very well for UDM as a freshman. He placed 12th at the Golden Grizzly Open (19:56), and 20th at the Titan Invite (21:22) to start the year. Midway through the season he set his 8k PR at the Louisville Classic with a time of 26:28. He finished the year as well as he started by setting his 10k PR at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. Nelkie placed 154th clocking in at 33:42. “Martin had a strong finish to his freshman track and field season as well,” Murray said. “Knowing what is ahead for him will help.” Felton improved throughout the 2010 season and eventually set his 8k PR at the Horizon League Championships with a time of 27:14. Additional standout performances for Felton include placing 17th at the Golden Grizzly Open (20:20), and finishing 35th at the Detroit Titan Invite (21:58). “Sam ran well as a rookie,” Murray said. “I think he will be able to step in and impact the team after gaining experience during last season.” A group of six student-athletes will make up the freshmen class for the Titans. Ylli Alla, Caleb Cox, Colin Creagh, Ryan Hofsess, George Holman, and Tony Rote will all compete for Detroit with the opportunity to impact the squad. “The freshmen class will have to adjust to the longer college race and keep up with the daily training pace,” Murray said. “Alla and Creagh have the chance to be impact runners on this team as freshmen. They have run well in longer races and we will need them in the mix for the year to go well.” It would be huge for the freshman class to perform well as Detroit only has two juniors and two sophomores on the roster. It can be challenging for newcomers, but Murray thinks his rookies will improve in time. “Rote and Cox are also fit for longer races,” Murray said. “It will depend on how quickly they can adjust to see if they can challenge for varsity spots. Hofsess and Holman might be more middle distance type runners. Hofsess may be able to adjust a bit easier because of his time at Milford. George comes to Detroit with only a couple years of experience under his belt.”

SEASON OUTLOOK Detroit will look to improve on last year’s eighth place finish at the Horizon League Championships with a core group of upperclassmen returning to the program. Kirstin Mooney and Kristie Ferrans make up the senior class, while Sarah Martinez, Katrina Oberski, and Katie Weishaar all return as juniors. “We have potential to improve this season,” Head Coach Guy Murray explained. “We won’t have much room for error. All of our runners will need to be at their best in order to move up the Horizon League standings.” Mooney claimed 29th place at the Horizon League Championship with a time of 19:31. Mooney also set a 6k personal record at Penn State by clocking in at 24:20. She ended the season at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional with a time of 24:30 which landed her in 192nd place. “Kirstin ran well for us last year, and she is coming off a big breakthrough after a successful track and field season,” Murray said. “I think Kirstin should be there as one of our top runners this fall.” Ferrans was very limited in 2010 due to an injury. She ran at the National Catholic Championships last September and finished in 20:52. “Kristie is able to come back after suffering an injury last season,” Murray explained. “She is an experienced runner, and I am sure that she will be making a contribution at the end of the season.” Four juniors are in the mix to improve the team in 2011. Sarah Martinez will look to take a step forward after competing in every single race a year ago. “The team needs Sarah to have a big year as an upperclassman after showing potential her first two years,” Murray said. Martinez set her 5k PR at the Horizon League Championships with a time of 20:30. Her second best time of the 2010 season came at Louisville when she clocked in at 20:34. Martinez ended the year with a time of 25:56 at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional (6k). Katrina Oberski peaked at the right time as she set her 5k PR at the HL Championships with a time of 19:40 for 33rd place. She broke the 20 minute barrier two other times while competing at the Running Fit Detroit Titan Invite (19:57 – 14th) and the Louisville Classic (19:42 – 83rd). The junior ended the year running 24:53 at the 6k Regional course. “Katrina has continually improved and I believe that she is ready to be at the front of the group,” Murray said. Katie Weishaar and Olivia Smid will try to add depth to the junior class. “Olivia could be a pleasant surprise,” Murray said. “She worked hard this summer and has the chance to move up which would help us. We are also looking for Katie to get healthy so that she can get back to her best.” Two Titans make up the sophomore class in 2011. Torrie Eger and Rachel Hofsess earned valuable experience by competing heavily as freshmen.

SEASON OUTLOOK “Torrie got some good experience last year and if she can get healthy I think that she could move up and make the pack very strong,” Murray said. Eger posted her best time of the season at the Horizon League Championships with a time of 20:55 which put her in 66th place overall. She was also close to that pace at the National Catholic Championships as she finished in 20:58 for 155th place. Hofsess set her 5k PR at the Louisville Classic last year. She crossed the finish line at 19:46 to earn 89th place. “Having a year of experience will help Rachel,” Murray said. “We need her to run like she did at the Louisville race last year.” Hofsess placed 22nd at the Running Fit Detroit Titan Invite (20:51), and 24th at the Golden Grizzly Open (16:06 – 4k). “We should have a good pack,” Murray said. “The team will need a front runner to emerge, or the pack will have to be very tight while moving up.” The Titans will have three freshmen on the team looking to gain experience in 2011. “Making a quick adjustment to the collegiate level is critical for our newcomers,” Murray said. The 2011 schedule is similar to the slate in 2010. Detroit will host the 25th Annual Running Fit Detroit Titan Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 10 this year. Action will begin at 11:15 a.m. The Horizon League Championships will take place on Oct. 29, and the NCAA Great Lakes Regional will held in Toledo, Ohio on Nov. 12.

HORIZON LEAGUE In its 33rd season of operation in the 201112 academic year, the Horizon League continues to aspire toward its goal of being one of the nation’s leading athletics conferences while being recognized as a leader in the development of studentathletes as leaders and role models. The Horizon League membership features ten public and private institutions that have impressive academic reputations and a storied tradition of broad-based athletic programs. Membership includes Butler University, Cleveland State University, the University of Detroit Mercy, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Loyola University Chicago, Valparaiso University, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wright State University and Youngstown State University. The Horizon League’s primary focus is on adding value to the educational experience through its four platforms: athletic performance, academic achievement, community outreach, and personal responsibility and accountability. It is the League’s belief that athletics is a powerful and visible resource tool that can be used to enhance student-athletes’ collegiate experience. The Horizon League’s goals are to enhance the holistic university experience for the student-athlete, to create an affiliation of institutions with similar athletic goals, and to adhere to the principals of integrity, diversity, excellence and growth. The Horizon League sponsors competition in 19 sports - nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and tennis) and ten for women (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, tennis and volleyball).
Avenue), located a block from Lucas Oil Stadium and just minutes from Conseco Fieldhouse, the State Capitol Building, Victory Field (home of the Indianapolis Indians) and the NCAA national office. A PROUD HISTORY Founded on June 16, 1979, as the Midwestern City Conference with six charter members, the League changed its name to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in 1985 and added women’s sports for the 1986-87 academic year. Charter members of the conference included current members Butler and Loyola as well as the University of Evansville, Oklahoma City University, Oral Roberts University and Xavier University. Among other current members, Detroit joined in 1980, and Cleveland State, UIC, Green Bay, Milwaukee and Wright State came aboard in 1994 (along with Northern Illinois University) in the largest nonmerger conference expansion in history. Youngstown State joined in 2001 and Valparaiso in 2007. On June 4, 2001, the Horizon League unveiled its current name and ushered in a new dynamic direction that has brought the League closer to its stated goal of being one of the nation’s top ten collegiate athletic conferences with a focus on enhancing the student-athletes’ experience by upgrading the League’s market and competitive positions.
Horizon League Commissioner Jon LeCrone UIC 2006-08), with UIC just one win away from the College Cup in 2007. In softball, League teams won a game in the national tournament four straight years earlier in the decade (UIC 2002, 2004; Wright State 2003; Green Bay 2005) while advancing into the second round in women’s soccer three of the last six seasons (Detroit 2004, Milwaukee 2005-06). Butler’s Victoria Mitchell became the League’s first NCAA individual champion when she won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
The League receives automatic bids to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s volleyball, and for the first time in League history, women’s golf. Green Bay’s women’s basketball team became the league’s first team to reach the Sweet 16 in 2011, knocking off Michigan State in the second round before going toe-to-toe with No. 1 seed Baylor in the regional semifinals. The Phoenix earned a No. 5 seed in the tournament, going 34-2 on the year and holding a perfect 16-0 mark in Horizon League play. STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING The main goal of the Strength and Conditioning Department is to help the student-athlete improve physically and mentally in their respective sport. This will be accomplished in such a way that is safe and efficient for each individual athlete. As the student-athlete participates in these activities we will work to lessen the possibility of injury or reinjury. If an injury should occur, we will work with the Sports Medicine Staff and the student-athlete to complete rehabilitation. Each team will have an individualized program based on their particular sport. Each program takes into account the intensity level, the physical demands, and skill involved in each individual sport and also each individual student-athlete. All teams and individuals will be subject to performance tests that will help design each program and also will help to determine the success of the program.
Joe Tofferi Asst. AD for Strength & Conditioning
Nick Wilson Asst. Strength & Conditioning Coach
Aaron Short Strength and Conditioning Assistant
Marcus Williams Strength and Conditioning Assistant
The Strength and Conditioning Staff will work with each individual coach at all times. Each coach will receive updated attendance, evaluation, and comments on a regular basis about each student-athlete. Communication is the key to success in the weight room and on the playing field. The Titans condition and train in the Larry Bleach Weight Room, located in Calihan Hall. All UDM student-athletes are trained under the supervision of two full-time certified strength and conditioning coaches, as well as two intern assistants. Every member of the Titan strength and conditioning staff is assigned a team, which allows daily interaction between the athletes and the coaches. Such interaction is a tremendous asset when developing a program that best serves the athlete and the team. In the past three years, the weight room expanded by over 400 square feet. Olympic style platforms, squat racks, stretch and other auxiliary speed equipment have also been added, all designed and implemented to improve the Titans’ speed and power. The center also features the ONS Performance nutritional shake, which is designed to help every athlete recover from training and conditioning with a supplement increase in their protein and carbohydrate intake. The Detroit Titan strength and conditioning coaching staff has not only helped the Titan student-athletes, but professional athletes as well. UDM graduate and current New Orleans Hornets guard Willie Green comes back to use the facilities during the offseason.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT / COMPLIANCE When talking about students who compete in a varsity sport, the term typically used is “studentathlete.” The word “student” comes first, and that’s the way the University of Detroit Mercy approaches all of its athletic team members. Although performance in competition is important, they are students first, and athletes second, with their performance in the classroom plenty important in Titan Territory. UDM’s Center for Student-Athlete Development, one of the first of its kind, offers programs for academic classes, drug education, student enhancement and works to improve communication skills. All 19 varsity teams are encouraged to take full advantage of the programs offered at the center. The center also heads up the NCAA Life Skills Program, which focuses on the student in student-athlete and how to deal with issues that all student-athletes today must face. Through seminars, guest speakers and NCAA videos, studentathletes are made aware of issues such as gambling and drug and alcohol abuse, and how to deal with these concerns. The center is made possible, in part, by a grant from the NCAA. In conjunction with the staff of the University Learning Center, members of the center’s staff teach UAS 107, “Athletes in Transition,” each year. All freshman and transfer student-athletes must take this course during their studies at UDM. The course deals with how student-athletes can make the transition from high school to college. This important class teaches student-athletes to deal with time and stress management, study skills and the importance of good nutritional habits. Another example of Detroit’s commitment to its student-athletes’ academic excellence is the Athletic Academic Coordinator’s post. Since the position was created, UDM’s graduation rate for student-athletes has steadily risen. Assistant Athletic Director For NCAA Compliance Steve Corder, no stranger to collegiate athletics as he played soccer for Detroit from 199498, and his staff carefully track each Titan’s academic progress to make sure they are on the right path toward graduation.
Steve Corder Asst. AD for NCAA Compliance
Amy Gasahl Asst. Director of Compliance/ Academic Cord.
In addition, student-athletes are helped with their tutorial needs through the use of the student-run Learning Center, where professors and students donate their time as tutors. The student-athletes’ academic progress is closely monitored and study table is set up to assist the Titans with any and all academic areas, including providing tutors and a writing lab. The center is open daily and also has evening hours to work around a studentathlete’s busy schedule. All freshmen must take part in the study table, as well as other student-athletes who have not yet achieved a 2.75 GPA. The University of Detroit Mercy is committed to the principles of institutional control in operating our athletic department. We are responsible for adhering to the rules, regulations and spirit of the NCAA, Horizon League and the University. The University of Detroit Mercy Compliance Office directs this effort and acts a primary resource concerning NCAA rules, regulations and compliance issues. We ensure that our institution complies with all NCAA standards and we are responsible for monitoring all athletic programs to assure compliance.

DETROIT TITAN HALL OF FAME UDM established its Sports Hall of Fame in 1977 in order to honor those student-athletes, coaches and administrators who have helped develop the successful tradition of Titan Athletics. The Hall of Fame now has 112 members, following the 10 latest additions made on Homecoming Weekend on Jan. 26, 2010. The 2002 induction dinner was truly one to remember. The inductees included two of the Titans’ former basketball All-Americans, Terry Tyler and John Long – or Thunder and Lightning, as they were affectionately known during their playing The 2010 Titan Hall of Fame Class is inducted at halftime days – as well as the 1960 of the men’s basketball game against Wright State on Jan. 26. Titan football team as a unit. L-R: Adam Walicki, Joe Kopicki, Kim Jess, Pat Adams, Additionally, the beautiful Ken Dubois, Mike Pesci, Maria Pandele new Hall of Fame display (Not Pictured: Jermaine Jackson, Rashad Phillips, Cassandra Pack) in the Calihan Hall lobby was unveiled that night for a crowd which would fill the arena’s main floor during the induction dinner. Long and Tyler were part of one of the winningest eras of Titan basketball, having helped their team to an 8625 record over their four years combined. They helped the Titans to an NCAA Tournament berth in 1977, and an NIT appearance one year later. Long was the only player ever to lead the Titans in scoring for four straight varsity seasons, and he’s still the second-leading point producer in school history. Tyler, meanwhile, is the all-time Detroit leader for blocked shots in a game, a season and a career. He is also second in career field goal percentage and sixth in scoring. The pair’s old coach, none other than Dick Vitale, was the keynote speaker at his former players’ induction dinner. The present-day ESPN/ABC telecaster kept the audience captivated for more than an hour with his memories of coaching the Titans. The 1960 football squad became the first team ever to be inducted into the Hall of Fame en masse. That team finished the season 7-2 – the winningest U-D record of the post-World War II era. Two of those victories, over Cincinnati and Xavier, came by shutout. Future pro stars Larry Vargo, Bruce Maher, Steve Stonebreaker and Jerry Gross were all part of the 1960 Titan roster. The most recent induction class included four former basketball players – Joe Kopicki, Jermaine Jackson, Rashad Phillips and, from the women’s team, Cassandra Pack – as well as former stars from baseball (Pat Adams and Mike Pesci), cross country/track and field (Ken Dubois and Kim Jess), golf (Adam Walicki) and tennis (Maria Pandele).

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR Keri Gaither was appointed as University of Detroit Mercy’s Director of Athletics in May of 2007, less than six months after being asked to serve as Interim Director of Athletics. Soon after taking the helm of Titan athletics, Gaither announced the expansion of the Detroit Titans Division I sports program from 16 to 19 teams with the addition of men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse and men’s tennis, all of which began play in 2008-09. In her first two years, Gaither also expanded the athletic staff by adding eight full-time positions to the department, directed the building and completion of a new $1.6 million all-purpose synthetic turf field and track, and was responsible for the hiring of men’s basketball coach Ray McCallum, women’s basketball coach Autumn Rademacher, and softball coach Sunny Jones. Gaither recently completed a successful fundraising campaign for the renovation of the men’s basketball office suite and recently completed tennis complex that includes eight new tennis courts, a tennis pavilion and a new grass field to accommodate the lacrosse and soccer teams. Gaither was recognized for her strong leadership as UDM’s Director of Athletics when she was appointed to the University of Detroit Mercy’s (UDM) senior leadership team as a member of the Associate Vice President’s UDM Athletic Director - Keri Gaither group in June of 2007. For the three years preceding her appointment as A.D., Gaither served as second in command for the Detroit Titans Athletic Department and also supervised nine Titan women’s varsity sports as the Senior Associate Athletic Director. During her tenure as Senior Associate A.D., Gaither played an instrumental role in the planning and implementation of women’s golf in 2004 when it became UDM’s 16th varsity team. Prior to her selection as A.D., Gaither had served in several key administrative roles for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics including stints as Senior Woman Administrator and Director of Business Operations. Gaither Chaired the Detroit Local Organizing Committee (DLOC) for the 2009 NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four which was played in front of a record-setting crowd of 72,922 at Ford Field in Detroit as the University of Detroit Mercy served as the host institution. As the DLOC Chair, Gaither provided strong leadership for the DLOC and maintained ultimate responsibility for the local operations of the Final Four event. Gaither held the same position, in addition to being designated Tournament Director, for the 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball Midwest Regional. As a current member of the Horizon League’s Executive Council, Gaither is actively involved with League operations. She currently serves on the League’s Men’s Basketball Strategic Planning Committee and has served on both the finance and television committees. In July of 2010, Gaither was appointed a new member of the Executive Committee of the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association. She is one of just 13 members serving on the Executive Committee, which works on behalf of the membership of the D1-AAA, in addition to its President and five other officers. Gaither was also appointed to the NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee (MOIC) in September of 2009. As one of six Division I members on the 15-person committee, Gaither is currently in year two of a four-year term. The MOIC was formed to review issues related to the interests of ethnic minorities and women with a focus on education and welfare of minority student-athletes, as well as the enhancement of opportunities for ethnic minorities and women in coaching, athletics administration, officiating and the NCAA governance structure. In March of 2008, Gaither was presented with the Phenomenal Women’s Ashley Gray Legacy Award by the University of Detroit Mercy’s Student Programming Board. This award was presented for her outstanding contribution toward the growth and development of students as the Director of Athletics at UDM. Gaither was also honored in September of 2008 when she was named one of Crain’s Detroit Business’ “2008 Women to Watch” for her goals and initiatives in the Detroit Titans athletics program and her leadership in serving as chair of Detroit’s Local Organizing Committee for the 2009 NCAA Final Four. While a member of the 2006 UDM Self-Study Steering Committee for NCAA Athletic Certification, Gaither also served on the Equity and Student-Athletic Welfare Sub-Committee and was designated the campus liaison during the certification process. Shortly after the University received its full certification in April of 2007, Gaither was asked by the NCAA to serve as a Peer-Review Team Member. Past University appointments include chairing UDM’s prioritization sub-committee and serving on various search committees. She is a past Board Member for the University of Detroit Mercy’s Women’s Studies Program and served on the Women’s Studies Program Development Sub-committee. She also participated as a member of the Tourism Action Group (TAG) Hospitality Committee, a group organized by the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitor Bureau dedicated to training the hospitality industry for Detroit-area events such as the 2005 MLB All Star Game, Super Bowl XL, as well as future major events. In 2006, the Titan AD completed the NCAA’s inaugural Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Females, a leadership development program sponsored by the NCAA Office for Diversity and Inclusion and the Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee. The Leadership Institute, designed to address the critical shortage of senior-level minority administrators at NCAA member institutions and conference offices, prepares diverse leaders through a 12-month leadership training and skills development experience. Gaither served as a past steering committee member of the Women’s Leadership Symposium for Intercollegiate Athletics and recently assisted in coordinating its national leadership conference. Gaither is also a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA), the Minority Opportunities Athletic Association (MOAA), and the Black Coaches Association (BCA). Graduating magna cum laude from the University of Detroit Mercy, Gaither earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. During her undergraduate studies, she was a two-time recipient of the College of Liberal of Arts’ Economics Student of the Year Award. Gaither and her husband, Brad Trombley, reside in Pleasant Ridge with their two children, Elliott (19), a junior at the University of Detroit Mercy majoring in Engineering, and daughter Kennedy (13).

POINTS OF PRIDE BYRNE WINS BIG BREAK Former Titan David Byrne made Detroit proud as he won the Golf Channel’s reality television show Big Break Indian Wells in July of 2011. The victory gave Byrne a number of prizes, with the best of all a chance to play on the PGA Tour giving him an automatic exemption to the 2012 Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Along with the opportunity to play in the 2012 Zurich Classic, he took home over $70,000 in cash, a paid trip for two back to the Indian Wells Golf Resort, an Adams golf endorsement deal and a $10,000 shopping spree to Dicks Sporting Goods. Byrne outperformed 10 other contestants on the 10-episode series that was shot at Indian Wells Golf Resort in Indian Wells, Calif. When he competes at the Zurich Classic, he will be the first Titan in school history to play on the PGA Tour. RAY McCALLUM TO REPRESENT USA BASKETBALL Sophomore Ray McCallum continued to find himself in the national spotlight. Over the summer, he participated as a counselor in the LeBron James Skills Academy and was one of 10 collegiate point guards invited to the Deron Williams Skills Academy. Then in August, he received an invitation to attend USA Basketball’s World University Games training camp, where he eventually made the final 12man roster. The squad practiced and trained in Colorado Springs, Colo., before embarking to China on Aug. 8 to begin competition. Despite being the youngest athlete on the US squad, and a late addition to the original invitees to the training camp, he impressed coaches enough to make the team and represent the US as the red, white and blue looked for its 14th all-time medal in the competition. McCallum teamed with players from national powerhouses like Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan State, Notre Dame and Syracuse. The team was coached by Matt Painter of Purdue, while Cuonzo Martin of Tennessee and Butler’s Brad Stevens served as assistants.
APR
REPORT HAS TITANS RATED HIGH
The NCAA honored more than 900 Division I sports teams for their high marks academically last spring, including a pair of University of Detroit Mercy teams that achieved perfect scores. The Titan men’s golfers and men’s fencing teams each earned perfect 1000’s in the latest edition of the NCAA’s Public Recognition Awards, released in May. The NCAA announcement showed that 909 teams have earned the awards, based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rates. These awards are given each year to teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport with their APRs. Through its innovative APR, which provides an annual scorecard of academic achievement, the NCAA tracks the classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I sports team. A week later, Detroit brought home high marks in the NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate as 16 Titan teams were at or above the NCAA’s minimum standard (925) for the entire seven years since the association instituted the APR system (men’s and women’s lacrosse and men’s tennis are all entering their third year of varsity status at the school). The Detroit men’s fencing and men’s golf team each scored perfect multi-year 1000 APR scores, while women’s basketball, women’s golf and women’s tennis were all cited with perfect 1000 scores in the 2009-10 academic year. DETROIT TITAN ATHLETICS TO NAME COURT IN HONOR OF DICK VITALE Dick Vitale received a tremendous honor from Detroit as the Titans announced that they will rename its basketball court in Calihan Hall after the legendary college basketball figure. The Dick Vitale Court at Calihan Hall will be dedicated in conjunction with a nationally-televised men’s basketball game against Big EAST foe St. John’s on December 5, 2011 on ESPN2. Vitale will be celebrating his 32nd anniversary of calling games for ESPN at the event having started on the sports television outlet on Dec. 5, 1979.
2011 CROSS COUNTRY YEARBOOK
Vitale coached at the University of Detroit (1973-77), compiling a winning percentage of .722 (78-30), which included a 21-game winning streak during the 1976-77 season when the team participated in the NCAA Tournament. Included in the streak was a victory in Milwaukee over Al McGuire’s eventual national champion Marquette team. In April 1977, Vitale was named Athletic Director at Detroit and later that year was named the United Fund’s Detroit Man of the Year. The Dick Vitale Court at Calihan Hall project will feature a brand new, state-of-the-art hardwood floor for the home of the Detroit Titans men’s and women’s basketball teams. Fundraising for the project will include several other key improvements to the facility, including men’s basketball “Phase II” renovations, which began with new offices and upgraded locker room accommodations. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT A PRIORITY FOR DETROIT The University of Detroit Mercy Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) did a great job as always in trying to help out the local community. Throughout the school year, SAAC got together for a number of community initiatives, including the highly successful Sandwich Bus. The event gives Titan student-athletes a chance to come together in preparing a lunch and distributing it to the local community. SAAC also helped raise money for the Michigan Special Olympics with a Pie In The Face Fundraiser during a men’s lacrosse game as well as hosting a coat drive during a men’s basketball game for Nardly Human Services, Inc. Other student-athletes were involved outside of the field and classroom too as men’s lacrosse players Brandon Davenport, Matt Lining and Adam Parrottino participated in a Habitat for Humanity project near Grosse Pointe, while men’s basketball standouts Eli Holman and Ray McCallum greeted attendees and showed support of the United Way and downtown Detroit at the annual Blocktoberfest. UDM also partnered with the Southeastern Michigan “Toys for Tots” during Thanksgiving Weekend where the Titans played host to the Legend’s Classic.
