TITAN FIELD The UDM athletic department proudly unveiled its new, on-campus facility in October of 2007. The new facility is on the site of the old natural-grass Titan Field, and includes an A-Turf field, along with a sixlane polyurethane track and areas for the steeplechase and field events. The field is utilized by the men’s and women’s lacrosse, track and field and soccer programs. The women’s lacrosse team played its first home game on the field on Feb. 28, 2009, in what turned out to be a thrilling game that saw the Titans fall to Niagara, 9-8. It was a cold day with temperatures in the mid20’s, but the show went on for the first-ever lacrosse game played on the upgraded facility.
The Titans new scoreboard was installed in the summer of 2011 and is ready for the 2012 season.
The Titans did not hesitate in getting on the scoreboard as freshman Emily Boissonneault netted the venue’s first goal just 19 seconds into the contest. Detroit freshman Kandice Bogatz made the score 2-0 at 16:48, while Boissonneault tacked on another goal exactly a minute later. “I was thrilled to win the draw and score the first-ever goal for us at Titan Field,” commented Boissonneault. “One of our goals was to score first in this game, so being able to get the first home goal for our team was very special.”
Anna Eidem takes a free position shot in the Titans first-ever home game against Niagara.

TITAN FIELD Detroit is 9-11 all-time in games played on campus. Titan Field is also the site for all of Detroit’s summer and fall individual and travel camps. With concessions located right next to the field inside at Calihan Hall, and the University’s Clock Tower bursting over the campus, it gives all recruits, families and friends the feel of home once they arrive. The installation of the A-Turf and track was just the first part of the Titan Field upgrades. Phase 2, when completed in the future, will include stadium seating for 2,500-3,000 fans, concession stands, restrooms, a press box, lights and a building with space for offices, locker rooms and storage. “The construction of our new synthetic field and track is another big step forward for the Titan Athletics Program. I am excited that our student-athletes and coaches, who work so hard day in and day out, will have the on-campus facilities they need to train and compete,” Titans’ Associate Vice President & Athletic Director Keri Gaither said. “The University’s substantial commitment for the new facilities is a critical component of our sport expansion plans.” Improvements to the facility have already been completed. In the summer of 2011, Titan Field added a new piece as a new multi-sport scoreboard was installed, which will benefit all the programs who call it home.
The future plans for Titan Field include stadium seating, lights and locker rooms as the Titans continue to make improvments to its athletic facilities.

SEASON PREVIEW Both freshmen arrived on campus in the fall and battled it out for the right to start and while both performed well, McCormick has earned the assignment early on. With that said, Anderson is right there to compete and push for playing time. “Lexie and Melissa are both very different goalies,” said Maness. “Lexie is quick, can confidently leave the crease for ground balls and scramble to get a good clear out. We are looking for her to be our starter and to lead the defensive end.” “Melissa is starting to adjust to the collegiate level. Her size is her biggest strength in the cage and we look forward to seeing her continue to improve,” added Maness.
Senior Alycsa Valentine is back to lead the Titan defense.
The Laura Maness Era is officially underway and for the fourth-year Titans, the new coach will have a great blend of experience and youth to work with. “It is exciting to think that the season is starting,” said Maness. “The team has worked hard since the fall and we are ready to get going. ” The Titans return 12 players from last season, including nine upperclassmen and four seniors. “With several key players returning we hope to get off to a strong start and therefore giving some of our younger players the opportunity to adjust to the collegiate game,” added Maness. Goalie The Titans were a bit shorthanded last year between the pipes when an injury forced Detroit to turn two of their defenders into goalies. While both senior Alycsa Valentine and sophomore Jenna Alberts gave all they had and worked tremendously hard last season when pressed into duty, UDM will have two talented netminders on the roster in freshmen Melissa Anderson and Lexie McCormick.
Hailing from Peterborough, ON, McCormick led her team in goals against average as a junior and participated in the 2010 summer amateur games in Ontario. Anderson was tabbed All-League as a junior and helped Powers Catholic to back-to-back regional championships in 2010 and 2011 as well as a state finalist appearance as a junior. Defense The Titans will have a mix of veterans and newcomers in the back. Senior Alycsa Valentine and junior Britany Busch bring the most experience to the position. Valentine has played in 50 games with 44 starts in her career, mostly from the defensive position although she has seen a few games as a goalie. She has tallied 54 ground balls and has caused 29 turnovers in her career. Busch started all 18 games last season and was second on the team with 40 ground balls and third with 15 caused turnovers. “Alycsa is very coachable and versatile and can help us at a few positions,” said Maness. “Britany is a scrappy aggressive defender who can cause turnovers and fight for the ground balls.”

SEASON PREVIEW the loose balls and ground balls. Her work ethic will give us a boost in the backfield.” Marshall was tabbed All-District as a senior after recording 62 draw controls and 73 caused turnovers. “Taylor is fundamentally sound on the defensive end. She is smart about seeing the big picture and when to slide, stay and draw the foul,” added Maness. Attack The four-man attack unit is headlined by senior Anna Eidem and junior Lindsey Saunders. Sophomore Tara Grady is also back and the last piece is freshman Tessa Keuler. “Our attack unit has learned an entirely new system,” said Maness. “We are looking to capitalize on our strengths and in turn increase our offensive productivity.”
Senior Anna Eidem has been part of a onetwo scoring punch at Detroit.
Sophomores Jenna Alberts and sophomore Morgan Lear are also back and are looking to make more of a mark in their second collegiate season. Alberts was just getting into a rhythm as a rookie at defense before she had to make the emergency switch to goalie. Lear saw action in 14 games and posted 10 draw controls, nine GB’s and six caused turnovers “Morgan is a very smart defender. She is confident in man-down situations and is able to contain the attack, which allows our midfielders to recover in the back,” stated Maness. “Jenna is always going 110% and her focus at practice and training will definitely carry over onto the field.” Junior Megan Callahan will also see some time in the defense, which will also feature two promising freshmen in Amanda Guthrie and Taylor Marshall. Guthrie earned a number of accolades at Winter Springs High School in Florida, including All-State and Honorable Mention All-American. As a senior she tallied 98 ground balls, 47 draw controls, and 32 caused turnovers. “Amanda works hard to cause turnovers,” said Maness. “Defensively, she is scrappy and goes for all

Eidem has played most of her career at midfield, but will move to attack this year. She has been one of the top offensive players on the team and in the NLC tallying 128 goals and 151 points in her three years. Another all-around player, she has over 100 ground balls and draw controls in her career as well as 40 caused turnovers. “Anna is more of a finesse shooter and is great in the crease and can create opportunities from behind the cage,” added Maness. Saunders has started all 38 games in her college career and has posted an impressive all-around stat line with 34 goals, eight assists, 56 ground balls, 40 draw controls and 16 caused turnovers. She also has nearly a 70% career shots on goal percentage. “Lindsey has good size and strength. We will be looking for her in catch and shoot opportunities and other chances in which her opponent is mismatched in height,” said Maness. Grady saw action in all 18 games a year ago and netted two goals and four points in her first collegiate season, and the Titan coaching staff is excited to see her improvement this year.

SEASON PREVIEW Mahorn, the team will also have two juniors at the position in Megan Callahan and Zaynib Hamze. Another junior on the team is Erin Campbell but she will redshirt this season. “They bring a lot of experience and knowledge to our young team,” said Maness. “Offensively, we have a lot of plays that are running from high and their experience will help the offensive unit stay composed and make sure the plays run smoothly and effectively. Defensively, this group can cause turnovers in transition and play aggressively in the backfield.”
Emily Boissonneault is just 12 goals away from 200 as she enters her senior year.
“Emily can drive hard from the top and is a power player,” said Maness. ”In a lot of ways, she really balances what some of our other players bring to the field, especially from attack with Anna.”
“Tara did a lot of work in the offseason,” stated Maness. ”She has great endurance. She plays high attack and will be involved in our transitions and fast breaks. Offensively we will look for her in off-ball opportunities like draw and dumps, back door cuts and pick and rolls.”
Mahorn is the third part of a scoring punch from the midfield. She has 86 goals and 100 points to her credit along with 103 draw controls, 96 GB’s and 54 caused TO’s. Like Boissonneault and Eidem, she also has over a 70% shots on goal percentage and can really punish teams if they start to key on them.
Keuler is another All-State freshman for UDM, who was also an Honorable Mention All-American as a senior at Oregon City High School. In her prep career, she had 157 goals and 139 assists, while causing 87 turnovers.
“Corina will be crucial for us on draws. She is a strong player who works well with the group and is always a threat to score,” noted Maness.
“Tessa is a scrapper. We will be looking for her to play behind the cage offensively, and she should be able to roll the crease and see the field for assists.” Maness said. Midfield While Detroit has talent in all of its units, there is no question that the strength of this team is the midfield. The group includes some explosive offensive performers and tough defenders as well as the most experience with all of the players being upperclassmen. Led by seniors Emily Boissonneault and Corina
Boissonneault – a three-time All-NLC performer - has been one of the best offensive players in the country since she arrived in the Motor City. She has scored over 55 goals in each of her three seasons and enters her senior year with 188 in her career. She is also a force defensively with 119 career caused turnovers, 156 ground balls and 98 draw controls.
Callahan has started all 38 games she has been a part of and is a bit more defensive minded when she is on the field, while Hamze has started all 36 games in her career and is just as versatile as the other members. She can get to ground balls – she has 112 in just two years – while notching 31 goals and 62 draw controls. “Megan will be on the field a lot for us and will get repetitions in the midfield and defensive end,” said Maness. “Zaynib has a lot of ability and we will look for her to be a steady contributor for us.”

THE NLC
Founded in 2009, the National Lacrosse Conference is a premier NCAA Division I women’s lacrosse conference. Truly a national conference, the NLC is comprised of teams from Florida ( Jacksonville University), Michigan (University of Detroit Mercy), North Carolina (Davidson College, High Point University), South Carolina (Presbyterian College), Virginia (Liberty University and Longwood University) and Washington, D.C. (Howard University). NLC members Detroit, Howard, Longwood and Presbyterian met in Farmville, VA, on the campus of Longwood University at the end of the 2009 season for the first-ever NLC Tournament, where host Longwood prevailed over Detroit in the championship game by a score of 19-8. 2010 marked the first time each of the league’s schools played a full conference schedule, facing each of the NLC’s six other members in regular season action before the season culminates with a seven-team tournament, once again to be held on Longwood’s campus. In 2011, High Point was added to the conference becoming the League’s eighth member. The NLC and its members are proud of their commitment to academics, character, community and athletics.

THE ATLANTIC SUN The Detroit Titan women’s lacrosse program will join the Atlantic Sun Conference in the spring of 2013, as announced by the Atlantic Sun Commissioner, Ted Gumbart in November, 2011. Other members will include Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Mercer, Stetson, Longwood, and Howard. “I am thrilled to hear that several Division I schools in the Atlantic Sun will be adding women’s lacrosse and that Detroit will get the opportunity to join such a reputable conference,” said Detroit Head Coach Laura Maness. The A-Sun will begin to apply for an NCAA automatic bid to postseason play in 2013. The conference meets the minimum participation requirements (six teams) and hopes that a high level of competition will lead to the bid. “We look forward to playing a highly competitive conference schedule,” Maness added. “The addition of another conference and several new teams speaks volumes to the growth of women’s lacrosse at the collegiate level.” The Titans are familiar with Jacksonville, Longwood, and Howard as each of these programs currently participate in the National Lacrosse Conference (NLC). Kennesaw State, Mercer, and Stetson are current members of the Atlantic Sun Conference. “Expanding the competitive opportunities for our student-athletes is also a pleasure to announce,” said A-Sun Commissioner Ted Gumbart. “The addition of women’s lacrosse to the A-Sun will provide championship opportunities for the growing list of A-Sun schools that will be competing in this popular sport, and we are very excited about adding Detroit, Howard and Longwood as affiliate members. They will be excellent competitors in the A-Sun and we look forward to a very successful future in women’s lacrosse.” For over 30 years, the Atlantic Sun Conference has supported its member institutions in providing intercollegiate athletics programs committed to Building Winners for Life. The A-Sun accomplishes this mission by maintaining the highest standards in academic and athletic achievement, creating a balance between student and athlete. Adding an emphasis on sportsmanship in the competitive arena and fostering leadership opportunities through community service, the A-Sun, its member institutions and its student-athletes aim for an overall educational experience that is successful in Building Winners for Life.

I look forward to continuing the development of the women’s lacrosse program into one that not only competes annually for National Lacrosse Conference championships and NCAA postseason appearances, but one that produces high character studentathletes that are great representatives of UDM both on and off the field.” Maness has started two collegiate programs during her young coaching career. She initiated the first NCAA Division III women’s lacrosse team at Waynesburg University (Penn.) in 2007, and she also implemented the first varsity lacrosse team at Lake Erie College, who competes at the NCAA Division II level. “We are extremely excited about the hiring of Laura Maness to lead our lacrosse program,” said Assistant Athletic Director Steve Corder. “The search committee and I feel that she is the perfect candidate to provide our current and future lacrosse student-athletes the coaching, direction, and guidance they need to succeed.
