Detroit Golf Club The Titan golfers are continually grateful to the members and staff of historic Detroit Golf Club, who graciously allow the team to use the club as its home course. Located just five minutes from the UDM campus, DGC remains one of the most storied and prestigious country clubs in all of Michigan. William R. Farrand founded the Detroit Golf Club in 1899. At that time, the first club members played on a six-hole course built on rented farm land near Woodward Avenue and Six Mile Road. In 1914, world-renowned architect Donald Ross — who also designed such championship courses as Oakland Hills and Pinehurst No. 2, both past U.S. Open sites — began surveying a parcel of still rural land just north of that original DGC layout. Ross created Detroit Golf Club’s current 36 holes on that property. He was even careful to preserve a trail-marking tree — which still stands today — that Indians bent as a sapling to point the way from the Detroit River to Saginaw. Ross’ two courses at Detroit Golf Club — one of 14 charter members of the Golf Association of Michigan — opened in 1916. The North Course is still regarded as one of the top 10 courses in Michigan. Like the North, DGC’s devilish South is a true test of golf. Both courses are heavily bunkered, an ingredient in most traditional Ross designs, and are heavily wooded with large, mature trees. After Ross completed his two-course project, his brother Alex was hired to serve as the club’s golf professional, and he held that position for 31 years. His successor as club pro was Horton Smith, who won the inaugural Masters in 1934 and played on seven Ryder Cup teams, never losing a match between 1929 and ’41. Smith shot the North Course record (29-33—62) in 1948, some 11 years before he was inducted into the PGA Hall of Fame. A second former Ryder Cup player, Walter Burkemo — who won the 1953 PGA Championship — is another well known figure who has served as head pro at the Detroit Golf Club as is 1980 PGA Club Professional champion John Traub. Jon Gates, a past President of the Michigan PGA Section, is now in his 10th year as the Club’s head professional. The UDM men’s golf team practices on both of DGC’s wonderful courses throughout the year. Additionally, the Titans make use of the club’s practice greens and bunkers as well as its driving range, which was renovated in 1998, as they work diligently to improve their games and prepare for their next tournament. The Golf Club annually hosts the Horton Smith Invitational on both of its courses. Some of the best players in the state are invited to this first major amateur tournament of each year. The field is always regarded as the strongest at any event in the state, with the possible exception of the Michigan Amateur. A number of past and present Titan golfers — among them Sean Hutchison, Adin Lohry, John Minnich, Jason Paholsky, Cam Smith, Johnny Strawser and Adam Walicki, who tied for seventh place in 2001 – have been invited to play in the Horton Smith over the years. In 1992, Detroit Golf Club hosted the U.S. MidAmateur Championship won by Danny Yates. The 1999 Michigan Amateur Championship was also staged at DGC during its Centennial Anniversary, and the tournament was won by Randy Lewis in a dramatic, 18th hole finish. The Golf Club also graciously opened its doors to still another tournament — the Midwestern Collegiate Conference Championship, hosted by UDM – in 2000.

Wayne Wheeler Titan Golf Practice Center One of Calihan Hall’s latest additions was unveiled on Feb. 16, 2008 with the official dedication of the Wayne Wheeler Titan Golf Practice Center. Located in Calihan’s lower level, the Wheeler Practice Center has been a tremendous addition for the UDM men’s and women’s golf teams. Built exclusively to benefit the Detroit golf program, the center includes a putting/chipping green along with two hitting areas, allowing the Titans the opportunity to work on their games any time of the year. The Detroit golfers can also use the new JC Video system to analyze their swings as they get ready for their next tournament. An avid golfer himself, Wheeler has become a great supporter of the Titan program, and his major donation helped make the new indoor practice center a reality. Wheeler is the founder and CEO of Data Consulting Group, which is the title sponsor of the annual UDM women’s golf tournament. “The University is blessed with a special group of friends and alumni who’ve been extremely generous and supportive of Titan Athletics over the years. Wayne Wheeler certainly fits into that classification with the way he has adopted our golf program,” UDM athletic director Keri Gaither said. “The new Wayne Wheeler Golf Center has already become a great asset to our teams.” A reception and dedication of the Golf Center was held prior to the formal opening, with many of UDM’s athletic staff, coaches and golfers along with their families, a number of former Titan golfers and other boosters.

“To have our own indoor practice facility on campus is really a tremendous advantage for our teams,” UDM Director of Golf and men’s coach Mark Engel said. “I don’t think there’ve been many days all winter where the center hasn’t been in use. The opportunity for us to practice inside if it’s cold or there’s bad weather, especially the short game, will really pay dividends.” “Wayne’s generosity and friendship is overwhelming,” women’s golf coach Terri Anthony-Ryan added. “I think he remembered his beginnings as a golfer and what practice meant to the way he was able to improve his game, and he understood what this practice center would mean to our program. He has really become a great friend to our golfers.”

Spring Preview The Detroit men’s golf team put together a difficult fall schedule for a reason – to get ready for the spring and a run at a Horizon League-best eighth conference championship. “Part of the fall was just to get our feet wet,” said head coach Mark Engel. “We had a sophomore who was hurt last year and two freshmen in our starting line-up so in many ways, this was about getting ready for tournament golf. We didn’t make it easy either in that we played on a lot of tough courses and against good teams that were ranked in the top 100.” From a ratings standpoint, even though the highest Detroit finished in a tournament this fall was sixth, it is still the highest rated team in the Horizon League according to Golfstat. The Titans tallied two sixth-place finishes at the John Piper Intercollegiate and the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate. They also tied for eighth at the John Dallio Memorial, took ninth at the Wolverine Intercollegiate – which was played on a course that will host an NCAA Regional in 2012 – and finished the fall season taking 11th at the Dayton Fall Invitational. “The guys had to work and they did a good job,” said Engel. “A lot of coaches were very complimentary and talked about the potential of this team. That is the buzz word, potential. It is a great thing to have and a horrible thing to waste and I don’t think we wasted it at all by any means. We played a lot of good rounds, but we just didn’t string together five scores by five guys in any round and that is the goal as we get farther along.” The Titans had five players average under 78 in their five tournaments. UDM was led by junior Simon Reyers early on, but freshman Lucas Kim came on strong to almost claim the top average on the squad. Reyers came into his junior year on a mission and posted three top-20 finishes in his first three tournaments. All 14 of his fall rounds were in the 70’s or 60’s as he led the team with a 74.2 average. He opened the fall with a career-best three-under 68 en route to his 54-hole best 215 for a share of 16th at the Wolverine Intercollegiate. He then tied for 13th at BGSU’s John Piper and 10th at Illinois State’s D.A. Weibring. “Simon had a very good summer and that was the first indicator that this was going to be a really good season for him,” said Engel. “He won his club and the Eastern Ontario championship playing against very good people. He is learning how to play with a lead and how to play with the big dogs and he had a chance to finish top 10 in really every event.” The rookie Kim also had three top-20 finishes with his highest mark placing ninth at DePaul’s John Dallio. Kim had 13 of his 14 rounds in the 70’s and recorded his

Junior Simon Reyers posted three top-20 finishes in Detroit’s first three events of the fall, and led the squad with a 74.2 average. fall best of 220 at DePaul. He also had a pair of 221’s in his collegiate debut at Michigan and at Weibring, and finished just behind Reyers in stroke average with a 74.5. “Lucas came in with an awesome resume and with a lot of teams, he would be playing No. 1,” said Engel. “He has that comfort level with Simon playing well that he could break himself in a little bit so he does not feel that pressure of playing No. 1.” Sophomore Brendan Leonard returned after missing a lot of the spring season with an injury and was third on the team in average with a 76.4. Leonard posted his best fall score at Michigan with a 226 and was just a stroke shy of that with a 227 for 22nd at DePaul. “Brendan is still on the comeback trail and as he gets more comfortable, things are going to be easier for him,” said Engel. “He needed to get right back on the course and into tournament shape and he did just that.” Freshman Michael Nedoszytko and senior Mark Hicks each had strong rounds in the fall as both Titans finished with a 77.9 stroke average. Nedoszytko’s best round came at Michigan where he rebounded from a nervefilled opening 18 to post a one-over 72 in round two, while his best finish was tying for 24th at BGSU’s John Piper.

Spring Preview “Mike had a good fall and now he just needs to work on his consistency. He needs to relax and keep playing his game. He is a very accomplished player and he just needs to keep playing to get used to the college game and he will be fine,” added Engel. Hicks also had his best effort at Bowling Green tying for 24th, with his best 54-hole event in the fall opener carding a 229 at U-M. Hicks played in four fall tournaments and had six rounds in the 70’s, while showing his senior leadership at Dayton as he finished his round despite suffering an injury. “By the end of our spring season last year, he was our strongest player,” said Engel. “He has an excellent game. His short game has improved and the thing he needs is consistency. Mark wants to do well and he wants to lead this team back to a championship and his experience is really going to help us.”

“Sheldon has some great rounds in practice and qualifying and he now needs to translate that to tournament situations,” said Engel. “For Kyle, an injury robbed him of playing last spring and for most of the summer so this winter is going to be important for him to work hard and try to get back in game shape.” The team will take all that experience, hard work and tough competition into its winter work outs as the Titans prepare for the spring campaign, which they ultimately hope will end in another Horizon League title and an NCAA regional berth. “When it is all said and done, I like our team a lot,” added Engel.

Junior Sheldon Keyte (Portage, MI/Hackett) saw limited playing time in the fall appearing in two tournaments. His best round was a 78 at Bowling Green. Sophomore Kyle Benford (Amherstview, ON/Holy Cross) did not play in any tournament as he is still recovering from a wrist injury that forced him to miss all of last spring.

Sophomore Brendan Leonard came back from a late spring injury to record a 76.4 average - good for third on the team in the fall - with 11 of his 12 rounds in the 70’s.

In his third decade as the head men’s golf coach at UDM, Mark Engel has built Detroit into an annual Horizon League championship contender and the proof is in the best place possible – in the Titans’ trophy case. He just ended his 21st season at the helm of the Titans, a program that has been the league’s most consistent and dominant team over the last 13 seasons. Detroit has won six championships while also coming in second three times and third on still another occasion within that span. The Titans captured Coach Engel’s first conference title in 1999, then followed in 2001, 2002, 2005, 2007 and most recently in 2010. They earned an automatic NCAA bid each of those latter five years advancing to the West Regional on three occasions, and twice to the Central Regional, including in May of 2010. Engel – who was given the title of Director of Golf after launching the successful UDM women’s golf program in 2004 – was voted conference Coach of the Year by his fellow coaches in 1992, 1999, 2007 and again in 2010, when Detroit scored a six-stroke victory at the Horizon League Championship. All told, the Titans have won 22 tournaments and produced 19 individual medalists during his tenure. Coach Engel continually hits the recruiting trails hard and has brought a highly-decorated cast of players to the Titan roster over the years, including the initial Michigan All-State “Super Team” members and first nationally-ranked Canadian juniors in UDM history. One of his recent proteges, Mark Sommerfeld, was selected to the 2008 Canadian National Amateur Team. Another, Luke LaFave, returned to UDM and his old team in 2009 as an assistant men’s golf coach. A third, David Byrne, was the 2010 Horizon League Player of the Year, and after graduating as a four-time member of the Detroit Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, he won the Golf Channel’s reality television show, Big Break Indian Wells. A team that succeeds on and off the course, 26 Titans have been recognized on the conference’s Academic Honor Roll as well as eight GCAA All-American Scholars, three of whom received the honor in 2010. His team consistently ranks among UDM’s highest in grade point average. On the links, Engel has coached 19 medalists – including two that have won the Horizon League Championship - 15 different All-Conference golfers, 13 All-HL Tournament honorees, seven Horizon League Newcomers of the Year and a pair of HL Players of the Year who have garnered the award on four occasions. Coach Engel’s former players are writing success stories for themselves in all walks of life, everywhere from professional golf to law and dentistry. One recent Titan, 2002 senior Adam Walicki, gained tremendous notoriety

During the 1996-97 school year, coach Engel’s Titans were one of just eight Division I teams to receive a Preview Grant. The prestigious grant, given jointly by Golfweek and Karsten Manufacturing, was made that year to schools that showed “a dedicated interest in building its golf program into one that will contend for a spot in the NCAA Championship finals in the future.” “To get to the NCAA’s with our league’s automatic bid is something we think we can compete for every season. I don’t think we’ll ever have a year where it isn’t one of our team goals,” Engel said. “We’ve been to the NCAA’s four times and we’ve played well at a ton of other events, so we’re backing that up. We’re way past the ‘One Hit Wonder’ stage. I’m very proud of that.” The Titans’ assistant coach for four years before assuming the head coaching reins in September of 1990, Engel recently retired as UDM’s Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Information. While in that latter role, he was the Titan Athletic Department’s link to the local and national media and oversaw all press relations and publications. He served as Media Coordinator when UDM hosted three NCAA Men’s Basketball Midwest Regionals as well as the 2009 Final Four. All told, this is his 28th year at the University. He received the 2005 Kathy Best Award – which recognizes the “quality and tireless work performed by Detroit-area media professionals in sports-related public and media relations” – from the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association, and received a 25-Year Award from the College Sports Information Directors of America in 2010 for his longevity in the profession and contributions. He is a member of the Horizon League Sporting Conduct and Golf Coaches Committees. He also serves as a member of the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame Election Committee. Coach Engel is a product of the famed S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, where he shared play-by-play duties of campus sporting events with NBC’s Bob Costas during their college days. Over the years, Engel has covered many professional and amateur golf tournaments for Associated Press and has staffed such major events as the U.S. Open, PGA Championship, U.S. Senior Open and U.S. Women’s Open. Additionally, he worked in media relations for the PGA of America at the 2004 Ryder Cup. Over the years, coach Engel has also spent some of his spare time involved in the local youth roller hockey community, and served as manager of Team Michigan ’89 at the inaugural State Wars Championships in 2005. A native of Baltimore, MD, Engel and his wife Jan are the proud parents of three sons – Dave, a graduate of UDM’s College of Engineering and Science, and twins Steve and Brian, hockey players themselves and two of the Detroit Red Wings’ biggest fans who earned their degrees from UDM’s College of Business Administration in 2010.

Assistant Coach Luke LaFave - 5th Season Luke LaFave, a 2002 UDM grad and a key contributor to the rise of the Titan men’s golf program during his playing days, returned to his alma mater in the spring of 2009 as an assistant coach. LaFave played an early, major role in the Titans’ recent run of success. The team has won six of the last 13 Horizon League championships and LaFave played on the first three of them while assisting on the staff with the 2010 title-winning squad. He also served as an assistant briefly during the 2004-05 season, one in which the Titans went on to win another league crown. “Luke set the standard for his teammates during his playing days and he set the bar high for future Titans with all of the success he had with us as a college player. I’m really glad that he’s back with us,” said Mark Engel, who’s in his 22nd year as the Titans’ head coach. “He’s learned a lot over the years from some excellent golf professionals. Luke can teach our players a lot, between his technical knowledge and his background as a competitor. If there’s a ‘Titan Way’ of doing things, Luke knows about it because he helped create it.” LaFave broke in quickly at UDM, finishing fourth at the 1999 league championships as a freshman, earning All-Conference and MCC Newcomer of the Year recognition in the process. He was also second individually at the 2002 league championships, claiming a berth on the All-Tournament Team and helping the Titans to their second straight appearance in the NCAA Golf Regionals. The latter conference tournament marked LaFave’s eighth Top 10 finish as a college player. He broke par in two of his three rounds at Green Bay Country Club en route to his runner-up finish, and his even-par total 216 over 54 holes was a career-best. LaFave was highly-decorated off the course as well. He won the 2002 President’s Award as UDM’s most outstanding senior student-athlete. He also received All-America Scholar recognition from the Golf Coaches Association of America in 2001 and again in 2002, making him UDM’s first two-time recipient of the award. He majored in marketing at UDM. LaFave came to the University after a very successful junior golf career which saw him finish in the Top 10 of the Ontario Junior Tournament of Champions on three occasions, and in American Junior Golf Association competition twice. He turned pro in 2003 and has competed successfully on the Great Lakes Tour and several other mini-tours. He also works as a national golf tournament director. LaFave and his wife Vanessa reside in Ann Arbor.

Fall 2011: Played in four events…Tied for fourth on the team with a 77.9 average, which included six rounds in the 70’s…Had his season-best finish tying for 24th at Bowling Green’s John Piper Invitational with a 230 (84, 72, 74)…In that event, he posted back-to-back rounds in the 70’s with a season-low even-par 72 in round two and a two-over 74 on the final 18…Posted his best 56-hole score with a 229 (76, 80, 73) for 53rd at Michigan’s Wolverine Intercollegiate…Claimed a share of 61st at Dayton Flyer Invitational carding a 159 (81, 78), while tying for 71st at Illinois State’s D.A. Weibring with a 239 (82, 83, 74). 2010-11: Played in nine of UDM’s 11 events, ending the year second on the team with a 75.8 stroke average in 20 rounds… Really came on at the end of the year winning the Titans Invitational with a 220 (73, 71, 76)…That victory propelled him to be named the HL’s Player of the Week…Earned Horizon League All-Tournament status after placing seventh in the league championship with a 231 (78, 72, 81), which includes tying for the second best round of the event with his even-par 72 in the second round… Shot a 74 for 13th in Notre Dame’s Battle at the Warren…Shared seventh at the PGA Village Invite after shooting a 157 (82, 75)…He was the top Titan at the Georgetown Intercollegiate sharing 19th place with a 217 (69, 72, 76)…The highlight of that tournament was his double eagle, putting in the second shot on the 530-yard, par-5, hole No. 1 at the Members Club at Four Streams... His 69 in the first round was his first of two rounds under 70 in the fall as he also tallied an even-par 68 in the Detroit-Oakland Dual, where he placed third…Earned a place on the Detroit Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.

2010-11 Season In Review “Britt and Jeff will definitely be missed as they were two great student-athletes for us,” said Engel. “Britt played in every tournament for four years and Jeff missed just one in his career. They were All-League and they were great students graduating with honors.” Clarridge saved his best season for last as the Titan led the team with a 75.2 stroke average, competing in every round on the year. He was honored with the Prof. William Kelly Joyce Team MVP award and earned his first All-Horizon League accolade. He seemed to be among the leaders in every tournament he played in on the year, recording four top 10 finishes, while taking runnerup at the PGA Village Invitational and third at the Titans and Bruce Fossum Invitational’s. In his career, he was HL All-Tournament as a sophomore and the conference’s Newcomer of the Year as a freshman. “Jeff had a great end to his career and I am glad the other coaches in the league recognized him on the AllConference team,” stated Engel.

Jeff Clarridge led Detroit with a 75.2 average. The Detroit Titans men’s golf team did not have its usual winning year, but for a team that always has the expectation of claiming a Horizon League Championship and NCAA Regional berth, they gave it their all battling until the very end for another conference title. The Titans fell one round short – really 12 holes - of contending for one of the top finishes at the Horizon League Championship. UDM was second after two rounds and trailed by just two strokes with 12 holes left, but ended the season tied for fifth at the conference tournament. That is something the Titans are not used to as the program has won an HL-best seven titles, including six in the last 13 years. When Detroit has not won the title, it was still among the leaders taking runner-up three times and third place on another occasion. “We did a lot of good things throughout the year,” said Mark Engel, who just completed his 21st season as head coach. “When you consider the transition we had to make in from last year losing two seniors off our championship team, we had a good season, but we always have the goal of winning a championship here. That is a standard that we have set for our program.” The 2010-11 season saw a deep and talented team with a nice blend of seniority and youth, but an injury bug would hamper the Titans in the spring. Even with that, the Titans battled their way and were in position in round three to win their eighth title. With the season coming to an end, so was the careers of two All-Horizon League golfers in seniors Jeff Clarridge and Britt Pronk. Clarridge and Pronk excelled not only on the course, but in the classroom as both were four-year members of the UDM’s Athletic Director’s Honor Roll and members of the 2010 Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars Team.

Another four-year letterwinner, Pronk established himself as one of the top Titans in his career as he was a mainstay in the line-up since he arrived on campus. He was third on the team in 2011 with a 76.0 stroke average and was in the top 10 in three events on the season. He tied for fourth at the John Dallio Memorial in the fall campaign and tied for medalist honors in leading the Titans to a dual victory over Oakland, a contest that saw him birdie the 18th hole to help the red, white and blue win. He was selected All-Horizon League as a junior and was twice a HL All-Tournament performer. His dedication and work ethic could be seen by everyone as he was honored with the Larry Bleach Award for excellence in strength and conditioning at the 2011 Titan Academic & Athletic Honors Luncheon. “Pronk was a steady player for us all four years and he came up with some big performances earning AllLeague and All-Tournament honors,” said Engel.

2010-11 Season In Review Even with the loss of those two golfers, UDM will still have plenty to fall back on based on this year’s results. One of those golfers who stepped up in a big way was junior Mark Hicks, who earned All-Tournament status as the Titans’ top finisher taking seventh at the Horizon League Championship. His strong play at the end of the year also featured him winning the Titans Invitational and finishing second on the team with a 75.8 average. Hicks also had one of the best shots of the year putting in a double eagle on his second shot of a par-5 at the Georgetown Intercollegiate, and he also posted his career low of 68 in the dual win over Oakland. “Mark really played well at the end of the fall and in the spring,” said Engel. “He went from being a part-time player to the top of the line-up, winning a tournament and having our best score at the Horizon League Championship.” The 2011 Coach’s Award winner, Simon Reyers was consistent throughout the year and avoided the sophomore slump with a solid season. He was fourth on the team with a 76.3 stroke average as his name was in the line-up in all 11 Titan events. He had his second consecutive top 20 finish at the Horizon League Championship sharing 19th, and in the event, he posted one of the best rounds in the field with his 73 in the second round. “Simon continues to learn and improve and has made a positive impact for us in his two years,” said Engel. Three other young golfers saw action at times during the year in sophomore Sheldon Keyte and freshmen Kyle Benford and Brendan Leonard. The second-year Titan, Keyte tied his collegiate low round with a 75 in the victory over OU as well as taking 33rd at the Titans Invitational. Benford and Leonard both had their moments as rookies, but both also had to deal with season-ending wrist injuries. Benford played in four events in the fall and had a 78.2 stroke average going into the spring campaign when his injury popped up prior to the Titans first event in the spring. Before that, he looked strong tallying scores in the 70’s in five of his last six rounds of golf. Leonard also put in some good rounds and looked to strengthen the Titan line-up until his injury set in during the Titans Invitational. He was fifth on the squad with a 77.7 stroke average and had 10 of his 14 rounds on the year in the 70’s. His best finish was tying for 24th at the John Dallio Memorial. “Sheldon went through some swing changes, but he was there when we needed him,” added Engel. “Both Brendan and Kyle played a lot as freshmen and went through some injuries, but I was happy from what I saw and they will be really improved and ready to go as sophomores.”

The lone southpaw on the team, Britt Pronk left Detroit fourth in school history with a 75.16 average as well as a two-time All-HL Tournament performer.

On the year, the Titans averaged 303 per round and had five top five finishes, while winning the PGA Village Invitational and its own Titans Invitational.

Titan Tradition Men’s golf was reinstated as a varsity sport at Detroit in the fall of 1977 and, since that time, has become one of UDM’s strongest intercollegiate programs. With its title in 2010, UDM has now won seven Horizon League golf titles, the most by any conference member in HL history. Part of the great tradition in recent years is that every four-year player since 1999 has left Detroit with at least one championship ring on their finger. The Titans have reached a zenith in the last 13 years, dominating the Horizon League by winning their conference championship six times, while finishing second on three occasions and as well as one third-place effort. Their last title in 2010 was at Kearney Hill Links in Lexington, KY, as Detroit rebounded from a slow start to roar back and overtake Green Bay to win by six strokes with an 875 scorecard (295-292-288), which included a tournament-best 288 for even par in round three to clinch the title. Besides the championship trophy, three Titans were honored by the league as senior David Byrne was named the HL Player of the Year. Joining him on the All-League team for the first time in his career was junior Britt Pronk, while head coach Mark Engel was honored along with Green Bay’s Bill Lindmark as Co-Coaches of the Year. Pronk and junior Jeff Clarridge also earned AllTournament honors. Freshman Simon Reyers played brilliantly in the final 18 to help clinch the title, ending the day with a 3-under 69, which included four birdies, 13 pars and just one bogey. Senior Brian Sparks was a key member of the championship run with a pair of qualifying scores in the first two rounds of play (75, 74). The 2010 title marked the first championship since 2007, when Detroit led from startto-finish en route to the coveted crown.

1-3-4 individually – as the threesome each made the All-Tournament squad and propelled the Titans to a berth in the West Regional at Arizona State. Detroit’s recent conference trophy haul began in 1999, when the Titans won their initial MCC (as the Bob Babbish Horizon League was originally known) Championship under coach Mark Engel, and second ever. The win was claimed at Quail Hollow Country Club, near Cleveland, by a staggering 27 strokes. Detroit paced that tournament from start-to-finish, too. The ’99 Titans placed three players – Jason Hartman, Brad Spears and current UDM assistant coach Luke LaFave – on the All-Conference team for the first time ever. Hartman fired a one-under-par 215 to become UDM’s first individual conference champion. In 2001, Detroit earned its first-ever automatic bid to the NCAA Golf Regionals – UDM would finish 24th in the West at Oregon State that year – after capturing another conference crown. The Titans led wire-to-wire at Cog Hill Country Club’s famed Dubsdread Course – longtime home of the PGA Tour’s Western Open – and they ended up topping Green Bay by six shots. Titans Brent McClung, Jesse Maytham and Adam Walicki each finished in the top six individually to make the All- Tournament Team. A season later, the Titans – using the same starting five as a year earlier – captured a second straight league title, coming in 10 strokes ahead of the field at Green Bay Country Club. LaFave and Johnny Strawser finished 2-3 in the individual standings to earn All-Tournament honors as the Titans went on to their second straight berth in the NCAA West Regionals, held that spring at New Mexico. After a three-year absence from the top of the standings, Detroit retooled successfully and added another HL championship in 2005. This time, the Titans came from off the pace as they grabbed the lead with a blistering second round and extended their margin over the last 18 holes for a 10-shot victory. Three Titans – Kyler Murphy, Sean Hutchison and Sommerfeld – made the All- Tournament Team en route to the championship and a berth in the NCAA Central Regionals at Notre Dame.

The first came in 1987, when they won the school’s initial MCC championship in any men’s sport. Under coach Brad Kinsman, Detroit led wire-to-wire over 54 holes at the Golf Club of Indiana, paced by sophomore Mike Cairns, who came in second place individually. In addition to their seven league golf championships, the Titans have also finished second in the conference five different times (1986, 1988, 2000, 2008 and 2009) and placed third on three other occasions (1989, 1992 and 2005). Seventeen Titans have earned All-League honors, with Sommerfeld the first to do it four straight times. Byrne joined him in 2010 with his fourth straight All-HL selection, while Strawser received the honor three times. Seven others – Hartman, Cairns, LaFave, Spears, Walicki, Norm Dickson and Jason Paholsky – have all accepted the award twice. In 2006, Sommerfeld became the first Titan to be named Horizon League Player of the Year, and he repeated the award in each of the next two years. Additionally, seven UDM golfers have been named Newcomer of the Year since 1992. Detroit has also had seven players earn high academic honors as an All-America Scholars by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA), with Byrne, Clarridge and Luke LaFave each being honored twice. The men’s programs has also seen six golfers take home the Athletic Department’s highest honor in the UDM President’s Award - given to UDM’s most outstanding senior studentathletes, who demonstrate what it means to be a true Titan. A host of Titans have also been hamed to the annual Titan Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, the Horizon League Fall and Spring Academic Honor Roll and the HL All-Academic Teams.

The “original” era of Titans golf, which spanned the period of 1926 to ’61, saw the team make three entries into the NCAA Championships. Their best showing came in 1951, when the Titans were fourth in the tournament staged at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course. Detroit junior Sam Kocsis was the qualifying medalist that year, earning the Number 1 seed for the match play tournament which determined the individual national champion. Kocsis is one of six individuals with golf ties who are now members of the University’s Sports Hall of Fame. Also included are Walicki, who was inducted in 2010; Kinsman, who coached the Titans for 13 seasons and served as athletic director for 25 years; Bob Babbish, the 1938 Western Amateur winner who was a match play semi-finalist the next year at the national college championships; Tom Watrous, who was a three-year qualifier for the NCAA Tournament and was also one of the top senior golfers in the state; and Prof. William Kelley Joyce, the team’s coach for 26 years. The Titan golf MVP has received an award in his name since 1980.

NCAA History trip in 2002, competing in the West Regional at the University of New Mexico. The Titans have also played in the 2005 Central Regional at Notre Dame, the 2007 West Regional at Arizona State, and, most recently, at the 2010 Central Regional at Notre Dame. Playing on the home course of the Fighting Irish, the Warren Golf Club, the Titans posted their best ever regional score in a round and overall as Detroit finished 12th in a starstudded field at the Central Regional. Pronk made history himself as he ended the event with the program’s best individual finish (T-43) as well as the best three-round score (217-76, 71, 70). Byrne was one stroke back for 48th-place and both golfers tied a school mark with a 70 in the final round of play. The “original” era of Detroit golf, which ended in 1961 when the program was disbanded for nearly two decades, saw the Titans make three appearances in the NCAA Championship – 1947, 1951 and 1955. Horizon League In its 33rd season of operation in the 2011-12 academic year, the Horizon League continues to aspire toward its goal of being one of the nation’s leading athletics conferences while being recognized as a leader in the development of student-athletes as leaders and role models. The Horizon League membership features ten public and private institutions that have impres-sive academic reputations and a storied tradition of broadbased athletic programs. Membership includes Butler University, Cleveland State University, the University of Detroit Mercy, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Loyola University Chicago, Valparaiso University, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wright State University and Youngstown State University. The Horizon League’s primary focus is on add-ing value to the educational experience through its four platforms: athletic performance, academic achievement, community outreach, and personal responsibility and accountability. It is the League’s belief that athletics is a powerful and visible resource tool that can be used to enhance studentathletes’ collegiate experience. The Horizon League’s goals are to enhance the holistic university experience for the student-athlete, to create an affiliation of institutions with similar athletic goals, and to adhere to the principals of integrity, diversity, excellence and growth. The Horizon League sponsors competition in 19 sports - nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and tennis) and ten for women (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, tennis and volleyball). The League receives automatic bids to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s volleyball, and for the first time in League history, women’s golf. Capitol Avenue), located a block from Lucas Oil Stadium and just minutes from Conseco Fieldhouse, the State Capitol Building, Victory Field (home of the Indianapolis Indians) and the NCAA national office. A PROUD HISTORY Founded on June 16, 1979, as the Midwestern City Conference with six charter members, the League changed its name to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in 1985 and added women’s sports for the 1986-87 academic year. Charter members of the conference included current members Butler and Loyola as well as the Evansville, Oklahoma City, Oral Roberts and Xavier. Among other current members, Detroit joined in 1980, and Cleveland State, UIC, Green Bay, Milwaukee and Wright State came aboard in 1994 (along with Northern Illinois University) in the largest non-merger conference expansion in history. Youngstown State joined in 2001 and Valparaiso in 2007. On June 4, 2001, the Horizon League unveiled its current name and ushered in a new dynamic direction that has brought the League closer to its stated goal of being one of the nation’s top ten collegiate athletic conferences with a focus on enhancing the student-athletes’ experience by upgrading the League’s market and competitive positions. tional stage, highlighted by Butler’s second consecutive appearance in the NCAA men’s basketball championship game appearance where the Bulldogs fell to Connecticut, 53-41. The Horizon League has compiled a 19-11 record in the past nine years in the NCAA tournament, ranking seventh among all collegiate conferences for winning percentage. Green Bay’s women’s basketball team became the league’s first team to reach the Sweet 16 in 2011, knocking of Michigan State in the second round before going toe-to-toe with No. 1 seed Baylor in the regional semi-fnals. The Phoenix earned a No. 5 seed in the tournament, going 34-2 on the year and holding a perfect 16-0 mark in Horizon League play.

The Mission Inn Resort’s El Campeon Course in Howey-in-the-Hills, FL , will once again serve as the site for the 2011 Horizon League Championship, with the winner earning a berth into the NCAA Regionals. Men’s soccer has tasted victory in seven out of the last nine years (Milwaukee 2002-05, UIC 2006-08), with UIC just one win away from the College Cup in 2007. In 2011, Butler was consistently ranked in the top 10 of the nation, earning the No. 13 national seed after becoming the last unbeaten team in the country. In softball, League teams won a game in the national tournament four straight years earlier in the decade (UIC 2002, 2004; Wright State 2003; Green Bay 2005) while advancing into the second round in women’s soccer three of the last six seasons (Detroit 2004, Milwaukee 2005-06). Butler’s Victoria Mitchell became the League’s first NCAA individual champion when she won the 3,000-meter steeple-chase at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Committee (SAAC) also has continued a tradition of working with youth in Indianapolis during its annual summer meeting. In addition, SAAC is partnering with Special Olympics, putting on events for olym-pians in each community. Several League men’s basketball coaches coached barefoot to support Samaritan’s Feet and Coaches vs. Cancer initiatives, and the League’s schools and fans donate to Komen for the Cure for breast cancer awareness during its annual women’s basketball championship. On campus, student-athletes have raised money and awareness for such causes as breast cancer, diabetes and hurricane relief, while hosting blood drives, neighborhood clean-ups and Big Brother/Big Sister programs.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS Horizon League student-athletes also excel in the classroom as more than 500 have been named to the Academic Honor Roll each of the past nine semesters for carrying a grade-point average of 3.2 or better, including more than 700 for the last four semesters. 24 student-athletes were named to ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District teams in 2010-11, while six earned Academic All-America honors.

SPORTSMANSHIP One of the Horizon League’s points of emphasis is fostering collegial environments for competi-tion among student-athletes, coaches, administrators and fans in a pro-active approach. Among the vehicles is the Ethical Conduct Pledge, which is signed each season by studentathletes, coaches, officials, and campus and League administrators. Its purpose is to make all the involved groups aware of the Horizon League expectations of behavior during conference events.

COMMUNITY SERVICE In addition to its athletics success, the Horizon League has secured a well-earned reputation for its community service initiatives. Each January, member institutions partner with local elementary schools for an art, music and essay contest highlighting the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with winners recognized at League games on the weekend of MLK Day. This Is Detroit Having celebrated its tricentennial in 2001, Greater Detroit has the best of the old and the most promising of the new. From Greektown to Bricktown, Detroit has it all. The oldest city in the Midwest, Detroit was discovered in 1701 and has since become the center of business and recreation for millions. It is the largest city in Michigan and the 11th largest in the United States. Encompassing three counties — Wayne, Oakland and Macomb — the Metropolitan Detroit area spans 2,026 square miles and is home to 4.4 million people, nearly one million of whom live within the City of Detroit. In 2010, the city had a population of 713,777 and ranked as the 18th most populous city in the United States. At its peak in 1950, the city was the fifth-largest in the United States. Detroit’s vibrant, 75-acre Civic Center is a riverfront mecca for convention, entertainment, festival and sporting activities. Home to Cobo Conference/Exhibition Center and Arena, Joe Louis Arena and Philip A. Hart Plaza, the Civic Center is adjacent to some of the area’s finest hotels, top-notch restaurants and the famous Renaissance Center. Cobo Conference/Exhibition Center underwent a $200 million expansion, which was completed in 1989 and increased the facility’s exhibit space to 720,000 square feet, making it one of the nation’s largest convention centers. Renaissance Center, now the world headquarters for General Motors, is the city’s largest office complex, with seven gleaming towers of activity located on the Detroit riverfront. The 73-story Marriott Hotel is housed within this symbol of downtown development. Long known as the automobile capital of the world, the Detroit area is headquarters to all of the major automobile companies. While a lot of the area’s industry centers around the “horseless carriage,” Detroit is more than a smokestack town. Home to 16 of the Fortune 1000 firms, greater Detroit ranks sixth among U.S. cities in total spendable income. A short walk from the riverfront and the rigors of business is the enjoyment of exciting ethnic nightlife, known to Detroiters as Greektown. A two-block area of authentic Greek food and entertainment, Greektown became an even more invigorating locale in recent years with the addition of the Greektown Casino, one of three major casinos operating near downtown. One can enjoy art and scan the shelves that house 2.5 million books in the Detroit Public Library; and experience Michigan’s Underground Railroad movement at the Museum of African-American History.

This Is Detroit Americana at its finest is displayed at Dearborn’s Henry Ford and Greenfield Village. While The Henry Ford is a museum that displays artifacts and implements used in earlier times, Greenfield Village demonstrates how these items were used and how they affected lifestyles. Music for every taste abounds in Greater Detroit. The Detroit symphony is world-renowned. Jazz greats join local performers at the annual Montreaux Jazz Festival. Popular music fans are entertained at several area music houses including the Royal Oak Music Theater, Orchestra Hall and the Fox Theatre. Detroit is a great sports town, known throughout the country for its enthusiastic fans. The Detroit Tigers play in Comerica Park, which opened in 2000 and hosted the 2005 Major League AllStar Game as well as 2006 World Series contests. Immediately adjacent to the Tigers’ home, the NFL Lions play in another wonderful new facility, Ford Field, which hosted Super Bowl XL in 2006 and the 2010 NCAA Frozen Four. The 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball Midwest Regional and the 2009 Final Four were both played in Detroit with UDM serving as host. The 2008 Stanley Cup Champion Red Wings call Joe Louis Arena home. The NBA Detroit Pistons play in the Palace of Auburn Hills. Two-thirds of a mile across the Detroit River lies Windsor, Ontario, Canada. To celebrate the friendship and independence of the two nations, the International Freedom Festival is held for two weeks each summer, with activities in both countries.

Nick Wilson Asst. Strength The main goal of the Strength and Conditioning Department is to help the & Condition- student-athlete improve physically and mentally in their respective sport. This ing Coach will be accomplished in such a way that is safe and efficient for each individual athlete. As the student-athlete participates in these activities we will work to lessen the possibility of injury or re-injury. If an injury should occur, we will work with the Sports Medicine Staff and the student-athlete to complete rehabilitation. Each team will have an individualized program based on their particular sport. Each program takes into account the intensity level, the physical demands, and skill involved in each individual sport and also each individual student-athlete. All teams and individuals will be subject to performance tests that will help design each program and also will help to determine the success of the program.

All UDM student-athletes are trained under the supervision of two full-time certified strength and conditioning coaches, as well as two intern assistants. Every member of the Titan strength and conditioning staff is assigned a team, which allows daily interaction between the athletes and the coaches. Such interaction is a tremendous asset when developing a program that best serves the athlete and the team. Olympic Conditioning style platforms, squat racks, stretch and other auxiliary speed equipment have also been added, all designed and implemented to improve the Titansâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; speed and power. The center also features the ONS Performance nutritional shake, which is designed to help every athlete recover from training and conditioning with a supplement increase in their protein and carbohydrate intake.

The sports medicine staff is responsible for assessing athletic injuries and illnesses, administering first aid and CPR care, making medical referrals, and preventing and rehabilitating athletic injuries that occur during the school year. The sports medicine department is under the guidance of Dr. Michael Workings, a family practice physician Jennifer Aldea from the Henry Ford Health System. Dr. Workings Athletic also acts as the Team Physician for the Detroit Tigers. Joining him for the 2011-12 year is Team Orthopedic Training Dr. Terrence Lock and Dr. Mike Hanna and Dr. Cesareo Intern â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bobâ&#x20AC;? Tongco, who will provide clinic and game coverage. Also on call is Team Dentist Dr. Reginald Jewell. The athletic training facility is located at Calihan Hall. This training facility is equipped with a taping and first aid station, treatment and modality tables, hydrotherapy whirlpools, and rehabilitative equipment. The goals of the University of Detroit Mercy Sports Medicine Department is to prevent athletic injuries as Dr. Terrence much as possible through effective injury prevention R. Academics & Compliance When talking about students who compete in a varsity sport, the term typically used is “student-athlete.” The word “student” comes first, and that’s the way the University of Detroit Mercy approaches all of its athletic team members. Although performance in competition is important, they are students first, and athletes second, with their performance in the classroom plenty important in Titan Territory. UDM’s Center for Student-Athlete Development, one of the first of its kind, offers programs for academic classes, drug education, student enhancement Steve Corder Amy Gasahl and works to improve communication skills. Through seminars, guest speakers and NCAA videos, student-athletes are made aware of issues such as gambling and drug and alcohol abuse, and how to deal with these concerns. The center is made possible, in part, by a grant from the NCAA. In conjunction with the staff of the University Learning Center, members of the center’s staff teach UAS 107, “Athletes in Transition,” each year. All freshman and transfer student-athletes must take this course during their studies at UDM. The course deals with how student-athletes can make the transition from high school to college. Another example of Detroit’s commitment to its student-athletes’ academic excellence is the Athletic Academic Coordinator’s post. Since the position was created, UDM’s graduation rate for student-athletes has steadily risen. Assistant Athletic Director For NCAA Compliance Steve Corder, no stranger to collegiate athletics as he played soccer for Detroit from 1994-98, and his staff carefully track each Titan’s academic progress to make sure they are on the right path toward graduation. In addition, student-athletes are helped with their tutorial needs through the use of the student-run Learning Center, where professors and students donate their time as tutors. The student-athletes’ academic progress is closely monitored and study table is set up to assist the Titans with any and all academic areas, including providing tutors and a writing lab. The center is open daily and also has evening hours to work around a student-athlete’s busy schedule.

Titan Hall Of Fame UDM established its’ Sports Hall of Fame in 1977 in order to honor those student-athletes, coaches and administrators who have helped develop the successful tradition of Titan Athletics. The Hall of Fame now has 112 members, following the 10 latest additions made on Homecoming Weekend on Jan. 26, 2010. The 2002 induction dinner was truly one to remember. The inductees included two of the Titans’ former basketball All-Americans, Terry Tyler and John Long – or Thunder and Lightning, as they were affectionately known during their playing days – as well as the 1960 L-R: Adam Walicki, Joe Kopicki, Kim Jess, Pat Adams, Ken Dubois, Titan football team as a unit. Mike Pesci, Maria Pandele (Not Pictured: Jermaine Jackson, Additionally, the beautiful Rashad Phillips, Cassandra Pack) new Hall of Fame display in The 2010 Titan Hall of Fame Class was inducted at halftime of the the Calihan Hall lobby was men’s basketball game against Wright State on Jan. 26, 2010. unveiled that night for a crowd which would fill the arena’s main floor during the induction dinner. Long and Tyler were part of one of the winningest eras of Titan basketball, having helped their team to an 86-25 record over their four years combined. They helped the Titans to an NCAA Tournament berth in 1977, and an NIT appearance one year later. Long was the only player ever to lead the Titans in scoring for four straight varsity seasons, and he’s still the secondleading point producer in school history. Tyler, meanwhile, is the all-time Detroit leader for blocked shots in a game, a season and a career. He is also second in career field goal percentage and sixth in scoring. The pair’s old coach, none other than Dick Vitale, was the keynote speaker at his former players’ induction dinner. The present-day ESPN/ABC telecaster kept the audience captivated for more than an hour with his memories of coaching the Titans. The 1960 football squad became the first team ever to be inducted into the Hall of Fame en masse. That team finished the season 7-2 – the winningest U-D record of the post-World War II era. Two of those victories, over Cincinnati and Xavier, came by shutout. Future pro stars Larry Vargo, Bruce Maher, Steve Stonebreaker and Jerry Gross were all part of the 1960 Titan roster. The most recent induction class included four former basketball players – Joe Kopicki, Jermaine Jackson, Rashad Phillips and, from the women’s team, Cassandra Pack – as well as former stars from baseball (Pat Adams and Mike Pesci), cross country/track and field (Ken Dubois and Kim Jess), golf (Adam Walicki) and tennis (Maria Pandele).

Assoc. VP & Athletic Director Keri Gaither was appointed as University of Detroit Mercy’s Director of Athletics and Associate Vice President in May of 2007, less than six months after being asked to serve as Interim Athletic Director.

to review issues related to the interests of ethnic minorities and women with a focus on education and welfare of minority student-athletes, as well as the enhancement of opportunities for ethnic minorities and women in coaching, athletics administration, officiating and the NCAA governance structure.

Soon after taking the helm of Titan athletics, Gaither announced the expansion of the Detroit Titans Division I sports program from 16 to 19 teams with the addition of men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse and men’s tennis. In her first two years, Gaither also expanded the athletic staff by adding eight full-time positions to the department, directed the building and completion of a new $1.6 million all-purpose synthetic turf field and track, and was responsible for the hiring of men’s basketball coach Ray McCallum, women’s basketball coach Autumn Rademacher, and softball coach Sunny Jones. Gaither also completed a successful fundraising campaign for the renovation of the men’s basketball office suite and press conference room as well as the addition of a new video room. Other projects that have been completed in her tenure is a brand new basketball court dedicated to Dick Vitale, the tennis complex and a new grass field to accommodate the lacrosse and soccer teams.

In March of 2008, Gaither was presented with the Phenomenal Women’s Ashley Gray Legacy Award by the University of Detroit Mercy’s Student Programming Board. This award was presented for her outstanding contribution toward the growth and development of students as the Director of Athletics at UDM. Gaither was also honored in September of 2008 when she was named one of Crain’s Detroit Business’ “2008 Women to Watch” for her goals and initiatives in the Detroit Titans athletics program and her leadership in serving as chair of Detroit’s Local Organizing Committee for the 2009 NCAA Final Four.

Gaither was recognized for her strong leadership as UDM’s Director of Athletics when she was appointed to the University of Detroit Mercy’s (UDM) senior leadership team as a member of the Associate Vice President’s group in June of 2007.

Past University appointments include chairing UDM’s prioritization sub-committee and serving on various search committees. She is a past Board Member for the University of Detroit Mercy’s Women’s Studies Program and served on the Women’s Studies Program Development Sub-committee.

For the three years preceding her appointment, Gaither served as second in command for the Titan Athletic Department and also supervised nine women’s varsity sports as the Senior Athletic Director. During her tenure in that position, Gaither played an instrumental role in the planning and implementation of women’s golf in 2004 when it became UDM’s 16th varsity team. She has also served in several key administrative roles for Athletics, including stints as Senior Woman Administrator and Director of Business Operations. Gaither Chaired the Detroit Local Organizing Committee (DLOC) for the 2009 NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four which was played in front of a record-setting crowd of 72,922 at Ford Field in Detroit as UDM served as the host institution. As the DLOC Chair, Gaither provided strong leadership for the DLOC and maintained ultimate responsibility for the local operations of the Final Four event. Gaither held the same position, in addition to being designated Tournament Director, for the 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball Midwest Regional. As a current member of the Horizon League’s Executive Council, Gaither is actively involved with League operations. She currently serves on the League’s Men’s Basketball Strategic Planning Committee and has served on both the finance and television committees. In July of 2010, Gaither was appointed a new member of the Executive Committee of the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association. She is one of just 13 members serving on the Committee, which works on behalf of the membership of the D1AAA, in addition to its President and five other officers. Gaither was also appointed to the NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee (MOIC) in September of 2009. As one of six Division I members on the 15-person committee, Gaither is currently in year two of a four-year term. The MOIC was formed

While a member of the 2006 UDM Self-Study Steering Committee for NCAA Athletic Certification, Gaither also served on the Equity and Student-Athletic Welfare Sub-Committee and was designated the campus liaison during the certification process. Shortly after the University received its full certification in April of 2007, Gaither was asked by the NCAA to serve as a Peer-Review Team Member.

She also participated as a member of the Tourism Action Group (TAG) Hospitality Committee, a group organized by the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitor Bureau dedicated to training the hospitality industry for Detroit-area events such as the 2005 MLB All Star Game and Super Bowl XL. In 2006, the Titan Athletic Director completed the NCAA’s inaugural Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Females, a leadership development program sponsored by the NCAA Office for Diversity and Inclusion and the Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee. The Leadership Institute, designed to address the critical shortage of senior-level minority administrators at NCAA member institutions and conference offices, prepares diverse leaders through a 12-month leadership training and skills development experience. Gaither served as a past steering committee member of the Women’s Leadership Symposium for Intercollegiate Athletics and recently assisted in coordinating its national leadership conference. Gaither is also a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA), the Minority Opportunities Athletic Association (MOAA), and the Black Coaches Association (BCA). Graduating magna cum laude from UDM, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. During her undergraduate studies, she was a two-time recipient of the College of Liberal of Arts’ Economics Student of the Year Award. Gaither and her husband, Brad Trombley, reside in Pleasant Ridge with their two children, Elliott (20), a junior at the University of Detroit Mercy majoring in Engineering, and daughter Kennedy (14).

Points Of Pride included a 21-game winning streak during the 1976-77 season when the team participated in the NCAA Tournament. Included in the streak was a victory in Milwaukee over Al McGuire’s eventual national champion Marquette team. In April 1977, Vitale was named Athletic Director at Detroit and later that year was named the United Fund’s Detroit Man of the Year.

BYRNE WINS BIG BREAK Former Titan David Byrne made Detroit proud as he won the Golf Channel’s reality television show Big Break Indian Wells in July of 2011. The victory gave Byrne a number of prizes, with the best of all a chance to play on the PGA Tour giving him an automatic exemption to the 2012 Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Along with the opportunity to play in the 2012 Zurich Classic, he took home over $70,000 in cash, a paid trip for two back to the Indian Wells Golf Resort, an Adams golf endorsement deal and a $10,000 shopping spree to Dicks Sporting Goods. Byrne outperformed 10 other contestants on the 10-episode series that was shot at Indian Wells Golf Resort in Indian Wells, Calif. When he competes at the Zurich Classic, he will be the first Titan in school history to play on the PGA Tour. DETROIT TITAN ATHLETICS TO NAME COURT IN HONOR OF DICK VITALE Dick Vitale, ESPN broadcaster, college basketball ambassador and former Titan head coach and athletic director, received a tremendous honor from Detroit as the Titans announced that they will rename its basketball court in Calihan Hall after the legendary college basketball figure. The Dick Vitale Court at Calihan Hall will be dedicated in conjunction with a nationally-televised men’s basketball game against Big EAST foe St. John’s on December 5, 2011 on ESPN2. Vitale will be celebrating his 32nd anniversary of calling games for ESPN at the event having started on the sports television outlet on Dec. 5, 1979. Vitale coached at the University of Detroit (1973-77), compiling a winning percentage of .722 (78-30), which

The Dick Vitale Court at Calihan Hall project will feature a brand new, state-of-the-art hardwood floor for the home of the Detroit Titans men’s and women’s basketball teams. Fundraising for the project will include several other key improvements to the facility, including men’s basketball “Phase II” renovations, which began with new offices and upgraded locker room accommodations. APR REPORT HAS TITANS RATED HIGH The NCAA honored more than 900 Division I sports teams for their high marks academically last spring, including a pair of University of Detroit Mercy teams that achieved perfect scores. The Titan men’s golfers and men’s fencing teams each earned perfect 1000’s in the latest edition of the NCAA’s Public Recognition Awards. The NCAA announcement showed that 909 teams have earned the awards, based on their most recent multiyear Academic Progress Rates. These awards are given each year to teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport with their APRs. Through its innovative APR, which provides an annual scorecard of academic achievement, the NCAA tracks the classroom performance of studentathletes on every Division I sports team. A week later, Detroit brought home high marks in the NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate as 16 Titan teams were at or above the NCAA’s minimum standard (925) for the entire seven years since the association instituted the APR system (men’s and women’s lacrosse and men’s tennis are all entering their third year of varsity status at the school). The Detroit men’s fencing and men’s golf team each scored perfect multi-year 1000 APR scores, while women’s basketball, women’s golf and women’s tennis were all cited with perfect 1000 scores in the 200910 academic year. Nine UDM teams were above the national averages among their peers within their sport. The new report was based on data supplied for the 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 academic years.

Points Of Pride Each year the NCAA honors select Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multi-year APR. This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams who demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multi-year APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport. Over the summer, he participated as a counselor in the LeBron James Skills Academy and was one of 10 collegiate point guards invited to the Deron Williams Skills Academy. Then in August, he received an invitation to attend USA Basketball’s World University Games training camp, where he eventually made the final 12-man roster.

In lacrosse, four members of the women’s program earned their way onto the National Lacrosse Conference’s Academic All-League Team in Britany Busch, Anna Eidem, Corina Mahorn and Alycsa Valentine. In men’s lacrosse, 10 players were tabbed Academic All-MAAC in Brandon Davenport, John Dwyer, Brad Janer, Ty Maruyama, Jason McDonald, Chris Nemes, John Nowicki, Adam Parrottino, Nick Schesnuk and Wes Steen.

The squad practiced and trained in Colorado Springs, Colo., before embarking to China on Aug. 8 to begin competition. Despite being the youngest athlete on the US squad, and a late addition to the original invitees to the training camp, he impressed coaches enough to make the team and represent the US. STUDENT-ATHLETES RECEIVE ACADEMIC ACCOLADES. Another year went by with a number of academic honor rolls and awards that University of Detroit Mercy studentathletes received. For the 2010-11 season, 155 studentathletes had cumulative GPA’s over a 3.0, while 16 of the Titans’ 19 varsity teams were also over a 3.0 GPA. It started with 210 Titans being named to the 2010 Athletic Director’s honor roll. The Titans then saw 58 members named to the Horizon League’s fall academic honor roll, while 54 appeared on the HL’s spring honor roll. In addition, 10 men’s lacrosse players were placed on the MAAC’s honor roll. As a team, both the Titan men’s and women’s track and field and cross country teams earned All-Academic Team honors from the USTFCCCA, while the UDM men’s and women’s tennis squads were tabbed ITA All-Academic Teams. The men’s golf program was also recognized as an All-Academic Team by the GCAA. Eight Titans (Taylor Hennrick, Vushaun Landrum, Susan Kalkstein, Katrina Oberski, Jeff Clarridge, Britt Pronk, Alainna Stefan, Erin Weldon) were selected to the Horizon League’s Spring All-Academic Team. Three Detroit student-athletes (Patrick Liederbach, Kirstin Mooney and Landrum) were tabbed All-HL Academic for the winter, while Lauren Roffey was named to the League’s AllAcademic team in the fall.

2011-12 Detroit Titans Men’s Golf

Also individually, Jeff Clarridge of the men’s golf team was named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar, while Marni Achterhoff, Alainna Stefan and Lindsey Lammers were honored as the National Golf Coaches Association’s Women’s All-American Scholar Team. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT A PRIORITY FOR DETROIT The University of Detroit Mercy Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) did a great job as always in trying to help out the local community. Throughout the school year, SAAC got together for a number of community initiatives, including the highly successful Sandwich Bus. The event gives Titan student-athletes a chance to come together in preparing a lunch and distributing it to the local community. SAAC also helped raise money for the Michigan Special Olympics with a Pie In The Face Fundraiser during a men’s lacrosse game as well as hosting a coat drive during a men’s basketball game for Nardly Human Services, Inc. Other student-athletes were involved outside of the field and classroom too as men’s lacrosse players Brandon Davenport, Matt Lining and Adam Parrottino participated in a Habitat for Humanity project near Grosse Pointe, while men’s basketball standouts Eli Holman and Ray McCallum greeted attendees and showed support of the United Way and downtown Detroit at the annual Blocktoberfest. UDM also partnered with the Southeastern Michigan “Toys for Tots” during Thanksgiving Weekend where the Titans played host to the Legend’s Classic.
