Facilities University of Detroit Mercy Strength & Conditioning Department The main goal of the Strength and Conditioning Department is to help the studentathlete improve physically and mentally in their respective sport. This will be accomplished in such a way that is safe and efficient for each individual athlete. As the student-athlete participates in these activities we will work to lessen the possibility of injury or re-injury. If an injury should occur, we will work with the Sports Medicine Staff and the student-athlete to complete rehabilitation. Each team will have an individualized program based on their particular sport. Each program takes into account the intensity level, physical demands, and skill involved in each individual sport and also each individual student-athlete. All teams and individuals will be subject to performance tests that will help design each program and also will help to determine the success of the program. The Strength and Conditioning Staff will work with each individual coach at all times. Each coach will receive updated attendance, evaluation, and comments on a regular basis about each student-athlete. Communication is the key to success in the weight room and on the playing field. Each team will have a designated time in the weight room that will be scheduled by the coaches and also the Strength and Conditioning Staff. Once this scheduled time is set there are no exceptions for an individual to be late or miss completely. Student-athletes must

contact their Strength Coach and also their Head Coach, prior to the scheduled time, if there is a time conflict. No team will ever work in the weight room without the supervision of one or more members of the Strength and Conditioning Staff. Titan Field “It was great to really get all these fans out here for our first game,” said head coach Matt Holtz after the game. “The support and atmosphere was great.” Titan junior Pat O’Shea netted the field’s first lacrosse goal nearly seven minutes into the contest, with sophomore Matt Gregson feeding him the pass for the assist. The installation of the A-Turf and track was just the first part of the Titan Field upgrades. Phase 2, when completed in the future, will include stadium seating for 2,500-3,000 fans, concession stands, rest rooms, a press box, new scoreboard, lights and a building with space for offices, locker rooms and storage. The UDM athletic department proudly unveiled its new, on-campus facility in October of 2007. The new facility is on the site of the old natural-grass Titan Field, and includes an A-Turf field, along with a six-lane polyurethane track and areas for the steeplechase and field events. The field will be utilized by the UDM men’s and women’s lacrosse, track and field and soccer programs. The men’s lacrosse team played its first home game on the field on April 11, 2009, falling to Wheeling Jesuit, 14-7. The game was more about the history of the event rather than the score as it was believed to be the first-ever men’s collegiate lacrosse game played in the Motor City. With 703 spectators on hand for the event on Easter weekend, it was also believed to be one of the biggest crowds to watch a game at Titan Field.

“The construction of our new synthetic field and track is another big step forward for the Titan Athletics Program. I am excited that our student-athletes and coaches, who work so hard day in and day out, will have the on-campus facilities they need to train and compete,” Titans athletic director Keri Gaither said. “The University’s substantial commitment for the new facilities is a critical component of our sport expansion plans.” Titan Field Firsts Game - Apr. 11, 2009 - Wheeling Jesuit 14, UDM 7 Goal - UDM Pat O’Shea (8:13 from Matt Gregson) Face-Off - UDM Danny Preston, WJU Luke Janssen (won by Janssen) First Shot - WJU John Dunbar First Save - UDM Vince Diana Groundball - WJU Luke Janssen

2010 Season Preview “We just think that is more of a natural position for him,” added Holtz. Three freshmen will look to make a huge impact for Detroit in Joel Matthews, Chris Nemes and Tyler Staruch. Matthews was a proven offensive weapon in high school and on the junior circuit. Nemes earned All-American honors at Detroit Catholic Central as well as All-State accolades and Staruch tallied an amazing 120 points on 86 goals as a senior.

It is not easy to build a program from scratch, but that was exactly what Detroit did when it announced in September of 2007 that it was adding men’s lacrosse. It was not upgraded from Division III to I, nor was it a club team on campus that the University elevated. Head coach Matt Holtz had just about a half a year to get on the recruiting trail and get players together and that team he assembled showed heart and character through the rough 0-11 season in 2009, but in the end, it was the start of a program on the rise. This season, the Titan coaching staff has increased its roster size and have added skill at every position, and with the Detroit name out there as a Division I lacrosse school, the Titans will only continue to grow. “We have better depth then we had last year,” said head coach Matt Holtz. “Having a full year of recruiting has helped us get bigger in numbers as well as add skill. That is the biggest strength of our team is having numbers and options. We brought in a very talented group of kids that will compete with the returners and any time there is competition, it will help everybody work that much harder.”

“Joel is someone that has all the tools to be great but needs to turn that corner,” said Holtz. “Tyler has great size and good hands and Chris brings skills and has the potential to be a great player for us.” Sophomore Ty Marayuma, who appeared in nine games a year ago, along with freshmen Matt Arb and Erek Bender will provide good depth. Another important cog was to be freshman Wes Steen, but an injury in practice will probably see him miss the entire season. Defense One of Detroit’s most experienced position looks to be defense where senior Chris Butts and Tim Shoemaker (long stick midfield) along with junior Adam Nolan and sophomore Jason McDonald all return to man that side of the field. Butts, McDonald and Shoemaker played in all 11 games a year ago, while Nolan saw action in 10 games. “Adam and Jason have really worked hard this fall and I think Jason especially is going to be big for us,” said Holtz. “Chris will definitely benefit from playing a year at this level and Tim has battled some lingering injuries, but is a hard worker who will be ready once the season starts.” Junior Matt Clugston and sophomore Nick Hoye return to the unit that will also see some key freshmen in Jamie

Attack While every facet of the Titan program will have an influx of new talent, the attack unit might feature the biggest changes with no starter from last season returning. “We have completely revamped our entire attack unit,” said Holtz. “None of the guys really played their last year and we have added some freshmen to help our scoring. The big thing is, we are really big in attack and we move well for our size.” One familiar face that will move to attack is sophomore Scott Harris, who notched three goals and an assist and will forever be remembered as the first Titan to ever score a goal. Harris was primarily a midfielder last season who brings good size up front.

2010 Season Preview Hebden, Jordan Houtby (LSM), Andrew Khalil and John Dwyer. “Some of the freshmen have really come and played big for us in practice,” noted Holtz. “Jordan has the potential to be an All-Conference type player and Jamie is adjusting well to the college game.” Face-offs Detroit will have a new main face-off man due to the season-ending injury to sophomore Danny Preston, but junior Matt Gregson does return after winning 31-of-67 attempts last year, including a 7-1 record at No. 3 North Carolina. Freshmen Brian Carr, Tyler Corcoran and Brandon Davenport will also be in the circle for UDM. “Preston is going to be a big loss for us since he is big bruiser who really did a good job for us last year,” said Holtz. We have three players coming in to help. Carr is someone who we knew can really be a good one, but Tyler and Brandon have really stepped up throughout the fall and in the pre-season working hard giving us some really good depth.” Midfield The red, white and blue will have experience and talent at the midfield with Gregson leading the way. He was Detroit’s best offensive player a year ago leading the team in goals (15), assists (10) and points (25). “Gregson is going to be a big part of what we do. He wanted to play Division I lacrosse and really gave us a spark all year,” added Holtz. Junior Tim Lehto and sophomores Brad Janer, John Nowicki, Jon Bemben, John Hogan and Adam Parrottino all return to the team. Lehto had two assists last season, while Janer added two scores and a helper. Nowicki had nine points and five goals in 10 games, while Bemben played in all 11 games. “Lehto has been working on his shooting and that is what he needed to do,” said Holtz. “Janer is a hard worker who has really put in the time since he got here. Nowicki will play a lot of midfield and I believe that is a better position for him. He is more of a north-south dodger and I feel he will do a lot more for us at the midfield.”

mers. Fields, Keefer and Summers look to be the biggest additions so far with a great prep career behind them. Fields played in the US Lacrosse Senior Showcase after his brilliant career. Keefer had 53 points and 36 goals as a senior and Summers totaled 102 points, on 69 goals and 33 assists in just 34 career high school games. “Mike (Fields) is a good athletic fast middie who can really help us and Austin has really some around and shown some great things in practice,” Holtz said. Goalkeeper Two Titans will battle for the reigns of the starting netminder in senior Vince Diana and freshman A.J. Levell. Both bring a certain skill set to the position, with Diana adding the experience of starting every game for Detroit a year ago. Diana faced 467 shots on the season, walking away with a.481 save percentage, Levell was a three time All-Region performer in his prep career where he posted over 1,000 saves. He ended his high school as US Lacrosse Ohio Chapter All-American. “There is a lot of competition at goalie,” said Holtz. “Vince really played well late last year and A.J. is very talented so that will come down to the very end.”

The group will see a number of new faces in sophomore Mike Brown and freshmen Austin Keefer, Stephen Mastracci, Nick Schesnuk, Mike Fields and Joshua Sum-

Head Coach Head Coach Matt Holtz Second Season

Matt Holtz enters his second season as the head men’s coach at the University of Detroit Mercy. He was hired in September of 2007 to transform an idea into a dream as he had to put together the only Division I program in the State of Michigan from scratch. No lacrosse team exsisted at UDM, not even a club squad, but Holtz took the challenge head on and quickly went on the recruiting trail and marketed the new Titan program. Even though Detroit was winless in its first campaign, the seeds were set for a quick growth in the sport and the Titans were invited to join the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), where they will be immediately eligible for postseason play in 2010. Holtz came to Detroit from Michigan State, where he was the men’s lacrosse club head coach from 2005-07. Under his reign, the Spartans posted a 22-10 record and had their highest national ranking of 17th in 2006. In that same season, MSU was a Central Collegiate Lacrosse Association (CCLA) finalist and, in 2007, Holtz earned CCLA Coach of the Year honors. In his two seasons at MSU, Holtz coached five AllAmericans, including three Academic All-Americans. He was also successful in raising extra money for the club team in two annual fundraising campaigns. “Matt has a solid background in college lacrosse based on his success at Michigan State. He brings a great knowledge of the game with him to UDM. The fact that he has longstanding ties to lacrosse in the State of Michigan should be very beneficial,” UDM Athletic Director Keri Gaither said. Prior to becoming the head coach of MSU’s club team, Holtz served as offensive coordinator for the Spartans from 1997-2005. In this role, Holtz designed and taught offensive strategies, as well as assisting in off-field management with travel arrangements, recruiting, scouting and budgeting. While a student at State, Holtz played club lacrosse all four years and served as team captain his last two seasons. In addition, Holtz was a member of the Motor City Lacrosse Club from 1997-2000. Holtz is also a local product as he graduated from Detroit Catholic Central in 1992. Holtz graduated from MSU in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in electrical and computer engineering. Holtz and his wife, Bree, currently reside in East Lansing, MI.

Assistant Coach Assistant Coach A Chris Kolon S Second Season

Chris Kolon is in his second year as an assistant coach with the men’s program. He is responsible for all aspects of the Titans’ defense and serves as UDM’s recruiting coordinator No stranger to lacrosse in the Metro Detroit area, Kolon has long been dedicated to the growth of lacrosse in Michigan. He began his coaching career with Coach Holtz at Michigan State (2000-2001). Kolon then spent the next few years as a high school coach at Detroit Country Day (20032004) and Birmingham Seaholm (2006-2007), serving as an assistant coach and defensive coordinator at all three stops, while maintaining a collegiate lacrosse officiating schedule. Kolon, a 1999 Rutgers University graduate, lettered for four years as a defenseman for the Scarlet Knights. He is a local graduate of Seaholm, where he quickly picked up the game as a sophomore and parlayed his love of the game into a collegiate scholarship, earning him the distinction of the first player from Seaholm history to play and earn a scholarship at the Division I level. Kolon earned his MBA from Detroit in 2009. He is also the Marketing Director and Vice President of Scorpion Sports, Ltd., a sporting goods equipment manufacturer, and is on the Advisory Board of All-American Lacrosse Leagues. Kolon, and his wife Elizabeth, are the proud parents of newborn twin sons, John and Thomas.

Coaching Staff Assistant Coach Kevin Demorest First Season

Kevin Demorest made an immediate impact in his only year on the field for Detroit and now he will look to continue to build the Titan program as he was recently named a graduate assistant coach for the 2010 season. He will assist the coaching staff in all facets of the program. Demorest had one season of collegiate eligibility left and the Birmingham native chose to come to Detroit and be a part of UDM’s first varsity team. He battled back from a knee injury to play in eight games in the Titans’ inaugural season, finishing third on the team in goals (10), assists (5) and points (15). Demorest, who graduated from Harvard in 2008, is currently pursuing his MBA from UDM.

Assistant Coach Bill Kozyra Second Season

Bill Kozyra is back for his second season as a volunteer assistant coach for the Titans. His duties include special teams and assists with the defense. Kozyra began his coaching career at Notre Dame Preparatory/Marist Academy in 2004, coaching the middle school program for three seasons (2004-2006) before moving up to the varsity program as an assistant for the next two years. During his time, he helped guide the varsity team to a 29-10 overall record and a Catholic League B-Division championship in 2008, following a 17-1 regular season, as well as a trip to the state regional finals. A 2007 graduate of Oakland University with a bachelor’s degree in business management, he played defense for the OU club lacrosse team for three seasons, helping the program to two CCLA Conference championships as well as two trips to the MCLA National Finals. Kozyra is currently enrolled in UDM’s MBA program.

The Only Division I Program In Michigan

2009 Season In Review The old saying “you can’t run until you walk” can definitely apply for the first year of the men’s lacrosse program. Every team needs a starting point and for UDM, 2009 might have ended with Detroit at 0-11, but it was just a start for a program looking to build from the bottom up. “It was a tough year for us, but what I liked about it was that we never got down on ourselves and we kept on improving the whole year,” said head coach Matt Holtz. For a first year program, UDM did not back down from anybody, playing 10 of its 11 games on the road, including contests at No. 3 North Carolina and Ohio State. When it did finally get a chance to play on Titan Field, the University was ready as more then 700 fans were on hand to witness the first Division I men’s lacrosse game in the City of Detroit when the Titans took on Wheeling Jesuit on April 11. “It was exciting to play at home and the crowd was tremendous,” said Holtz. “It was great to just sleep in our own bed and play on a field that we are familiar with.”

Riley Turchetti “He was a diamond in the rough for us,” said Holtz. “He wanted to play Division I and just his attitude and aggressiveness was something that we needed and I hope its something the others players picked up on as we move forward.”

Detroit featured the smallest roster size in Division I with 26 eligible players. That is not even counting the games throughout the year that players missed due to injury. On the field, the young Titan squad, which had 15 freshmen and five sophomores to go with just one player with Division I experience, struggled early, but saw the development in a number of players as the season went on.

All three were helped along the way by senior Michael Schumacher’s consistent production (seven goals and 11 points) and his energy out on the field.

From the start, UDM leaned heavily on the leadership of its upper class, led by senior captains Kevin Demorest and Riley Turchetti along with junior captain Pat O’Shea.

“You can just see how much better we got from the Ohio State game until the last weekend of the year,” said Holtz. “Jason McDonald was steady for us all year. Adam Nolan came back from an early season injury and played well and guys like Tim Shoemaker and Chris Butts will benefit from playing a year at this level.”

Demorest missed the first two games of the year rehabbing from a torn ACL injury suffered in the fall. He went on to play in eight games with seven starts and was third on the team in goals (10), assists (5) and points (15). O’Shea was second on the squad with 11 goals, six assists and 17 points, while Turchetti started all 11 games as a defender scooping up 16 groundballs and forcing nine turnovers. “They were the leaders on our team and their leadership could be seen right from the start,” said Holtz. One of the young players that stepped up right away was sophomore midfielder Matt Gregson, who led the team in almost every statistical category including goals (15), assists (10), points (25) and groundballs (44).

27

The defense also progressed at the end of the season allowing just 10 goals to Denver and 13 at Air Force in the last two games of the year, after starting the campaign giving up 21 markers to Ohio State.

Part of the turnaround can be attributed to the improvement of junior goalkeeper Vince Diana, who started all 11 games ending the year with 141 saves, including 20 against Air Force, a mark that is tied for the 10th most in a game in the country. “Diana really worked hard, both on and off the field, and in the weight room working on not just getting stronger, but his overall agility and reaction time too,” added Holtz. As Detroit moves forward and the team continues to build a winning program, the 2009 team might be remembered for its winless season, but more importantly, will be remembered as the start of things to come.
