The Department manages 16,000 lane miles across the state from multi-lane urban concrete interstates to rural two-lane asphalt roads. Pavement Managment Map Approximately $250 million is required annually to preserve this $20 billion asset. To accomplish this task the Department’s has used a philosophy that good roads cost less which means timely, cost-effective treatments minimize cost while achieving the greatest long term benefit. Preservation, and Rehabilitation extend pavement life and delay a need for Reconstruction.

UDOT has created a tiered system for prioritizing our pavements in acknowledgment that current funding levels are not adequate to maintain the entire system. The tiers refered to as Functional Class are: • Interstate Centerline Miles ~ 935 or 16% • Level 1 (average annual daily traffic (AADT) greater than 1,000 and truck volume greater than 200) National Highway System ~1620 miles Non National Highway System ~ 1320 miles • Level 2 (AADT) less than 1,000. Centerline Miles ~ 1985 or 34% The location of Functional Class roads is displayed on the Pavment Managment Strategic Direction map to the right. Greater detail is found inUPlan which may be accessed through the Functional Class tab in the left hand menu. To achieve goals stated above a Pavement Management System is used. It includes a set of tools and methods that assist decision makers in finding cost-effective strategies for the roadway maintenance. With the aid of this system decision makers take into consideration the network as a whole and individual projects. The Pavement managment program is documented in the following: •

“A Plan for Every Section of Every Road” Utah Highways are composed of 245 state highways. These highways are divided into 1,500 individual sections of varying length. Each individual section has its own history including when it was originally constructed, traffic volumes, type of facility (interstate, urban, rural), biannual distress surveys, and when the next preservation is scheduled.
