UE 16591 (4-5) The popularity of Ragtime in its heyday, around the turn of the 20th c. was enormous and in the 1970s the style enjoyed a huge revival. To this day Ragtime appears in all areas of America’s musical life from film scores to concert programmes.

These collections of pieces employ some of the stylistic mannerisms of Ragtime, namely its ‘on-beat’ style with syncopated melody but rhythmically straightforward bass, without posing the technical difficulties of the original ragtime composers.

Barrelhouse Piano Barrelhouse describes a style of piano blues which originated in the lumber camp saloons of the Amercian south in the early years of the 20th century.

Characteristically the music was four to the bar, slow or medium tempo with heavy left-hand vamping (stomping) whilst righthand chords were sustained with frequent use of tremolo.

Said to have developed as an entertainment in the saloon bars of Louisiana and Mississippi, Boogie-Woogie grew in popularity from the late 1920s and reached its peak in the late 1930s to early 1940s.

Characterised by blues chord progressions and a percussive, repetitive left-hand figuration, Boogie is immediately recognisable and fun to play.

Dixieland Piano The feel of the Dixieland jazz band is heard throughout this book of original piano solos which includes Rags, the Dixieland Two-Step and slow and medium tempo blues.

These swinging pieces will prove to be great favourites for intermediate-level pianists.
