Reviewing Play the Piano 1 for Pianist Magazine, July 2011, Michael McMillan wrote: “The book goes to the top of the pile of piano tutorials currently available for the older beginner ‌excellent!
Acquiring a suitable instrument – which offers advice to the novice pianist in search of a piano. Before you get started – which contains information on the theory and notation of music for those who prefer to read and learn before beginning to play, together with some advice on seating and hand positions. Note, however, that explanation of theory and notation is also explained in the book at each stage on a ‘need to know’ basis. Additional repertoire – more pieces to play for each stage of the book. A chord chart – for those who wish to further explore this approach to the notation of harmony. Key signatures – A complete chart of key signatures for those who would like to gain a fuller understanding of this subject.

Clever Cat
Stickers enclosed for rewarding achievem ent
Clever Cat Preliminary books The pupil/teacher ‘learning-through-duet’ albums Clever Cat and Clever Cat at the Seaside lead the absolute beginner towards ‘going it alone’ with Clever Cat goes Solo and Clever Cat goes on Safari. Based on the simple idea of the pupil copying the teacher, these duets will have young beginners happily playing with a real feeling of achievement right from their first lesson. Virtually every note in the pupil’s part is first played by the teacher in a higher or lower octave, so encouraging correct fingering, phrasing, dynamics and articulation. Each book comes with a CD for listening and participating. As well as providing play-along tracks for practice between lessons, the CD contains enhanced performances of each duet bringing the style and atmosphere of each piece alive.
Clever Cat The first in the series, pupil and teacher play simple duets in a variety of styles including pieces such as Cat Nap, The Cat’s Pyjamas, Alley Cat, Cool Cat, Five-finger Exercises, Feline Dreams, Caterwaulin’ and more. Many of the pieces provide extra fun practice of basic skills such as five-finger exercises, scales, broken chords and arpeggios. The CD includes performances of each duet, for listening, and play-along tracks for pupils to use at home. UE 21407 (for beginners) “… this book is unique… thank you Mr Cornick!” Fiona Lau, MUSIC TEACHER, May 2008
Clever Cat at the Seaside The second duet book leading on from book 1, with CD. The range of keys is mostly restricted to C, F and G majors and relative minors which will suit young players in their earliest years. The 15 descriptive and contrasting duets make delightful performance pieces. UE 21464 (easy, pre-grade 1) “...Here is some lovely characterful word painting. Rockpool is very watery and limpid...Boat Trip is a jaunty sea-shanty... Deep Blue Sea is incredibly atmospheric.“ Jenny Macmillan, PIANO PROFESSIONAL, Autumn 2009
Mike Cornick and friends
Clever Cat Solo Books Written with skill-building in mind, the main intention is to provide inspiring pieces which explore a variety of styles within a restricted range of keys and technical demands. Again, fun illustrations of Clever Cat and his new acquaintances will quickly remind players of the mood of each piece
Clever Cat goes Solo Following on from the teacher and pupil duet collections, now the young pianist has the chance to take flight on his or her own. Pieces include: Chocks Away! Looping the Loop, Up, Up and Away, Touching the Clouds, Rollin’ and a-Rockin’, Gliding, The Parachutist and Coming in to Land. UE 21484 (1)
Clever Cat goes on Safari Easy – middle-grade solo piano pieces Moving on and a step higher in technical and interpretative skills from Clever Cat goes Solo, this next adventure takes Clever Cat into the wilds of darkest Africa. Here he comes face to face with some exotic and awe-inspiring wildlife including elephants, meerkats, crocodiles, and, of course, his distant relative and king of cats – the mighty lion. Includes The Waltz of the Elephants, March of the Meerkats, The Crocodile Bridge, King of Cats – the Mighty Lion, Dance of the Baboons, Ostrich Outing, an added song version of The Blue Giraffe and more. Mike Cornick's Jazz Piano Styles
America
The original pieces in this series serve as an introduction to the popular musical styles that have evolved in America from the latter part of the 19th and into the 20th century. Each album contains historical notes and performing tips.
Piano Ragtime UE 30413 (4-5)
Piano Ragtime Duets
UE 16591 (4-5) The popularity of Ragtime in its heyday, around the turn of the 20th c. was enormous and in the 1970s the style enjoyed a huge revival. To this day Ragtime appears in all areas of America’s musical life from film scores to concert programmes. These collections of pieces employ some of the stylistic mannerisms of Ragtime, namely its ‘on-beat’ style with syncopated melody but rhythmically straightforward bass, without posing the technical difficulties of the original ragtime composers.
Latin Piano UE 17365 (3-6)
Latin Piano Duets
UE 21007 (4-6) These volumes of Latin-styled original pieces explore a variety of moods and tempos including an up-beat Conga, a slow and contemplative Tango and some gentle Bossa Novas. Attractive melodies and very accessible piano writing make them a great choice for middle-grade players.
Barrelhouse Piano Barrelhouse describes a style of piano blues which originated in the lumber camp saloons of the Amercian south in the early years of the 20th century. Characteristically the music was four to the bar, slow or medium tempo with heavy left-hand vamping (stomping) whilst righthand chords were sustained with frequent use of tremolo. UE 17375 (5-6)
Boogie Piano Book UE 16592 (3-4)
Boogie Piano Duets UE 18796 (4-5)
Said to have developed as an entertainment in the saloon bars of Louisiana and Mississippi, Boogie-Woogie grew in popularity from the late 1920s and reached its peak in the late 1930s to early 1940s. Characterised by blues chord progressions and a percussive, repetitive left-hand figuration, Boogie is immediately recognisable and fun to play.
Dixieland Piano The feel of the Dixieland jazz band is heard throughout this book of original piano solos which includes Rags, the Dixieland Two-Step and slow and medium tempo blues. These swinging pieces will prove to be great favourites for intermediate-level pianists. UE 21025 (4-6)
