Violin Debut is ideally suitable for beginners as a supplement to their violin lessons – for playing with a piano accompaniment or play-along CD. The keys are very good for practising initial finger patterns. String players at elementary level will find effective material in this book, and some pieces are in duet format. Violinists can also play together with other instrumentalists in a mixed ensemble as several pieces also appear in books for other instruments in the Debut series.

Stringplay and Stringplay Around the World contain outstanding, varied pieces for beginners in string ensembles and those having “whole-class” tuition. The key element for both teachers and students is the flexibility of the string settings, from duet to full string orchestra! Particularly easy arrangements enable even the youngest children to enjoy playing in ensembles. The teacher can put together an ensemble based on requirements and the number of students. These editions guarantee a full sound and lots of fun while also providing flexible string parts, which makes them ideal for grouping players of different levels. In Stringplay Around the World string students travel ‘around the world’ with attractive arrangements, from the Rocky Mountains to Kalinka. A ‘must‘ for every string teacher!

The Easy Pieces for violin and piano series introduces young violinists to music by composers ranging from Henry Purcell to Peter I. Tchaikovsky. The pieces are set at an easy level and are suitable for both absolute beginners and intermediate pupils. The edition containing pieces by Peter I. Tchaikovsky includes not only familiar melodies, but also those seldom heard. For instance, you find yourself on stage with “Snow White” or suddenly dancing to “Danse Napolitaine”.

The series Children on Stage enables young instrumentalists to work on and successfully perform world-famous works in music literature. The level of difficulty has been chosen to ensure that the pieces are not too technical for students – each one is quite short and straightforward. The series is a welcome addition for teachers: apart from the pleasure gained by playing music, it also gives the children an insight into music literature and allows them to encounter the most famous composers in a musicmaking environment. As small chamber music arrangements, all works in the series are ideally suited both to group instruction and also ensemble work with children and young people. Success is guaranteed!

Play-Along Scotland is a really useful resource for all sorts of players, and James Rae has selected tunes which are good music by anyone‘s standards. Those coming from the traditional folk side will enjoy improvising around them, yet the classical player will find nothing here to frighten them and will enjoy how good they sound, just played “straight“. This is ideal material for the intermediate-level learner, and even the most classically-based teacher will find many pieces here that can be used as studies for developing sound technique.

Universal Edition has enhanced its extensive portfolio of string music with new editions in the publisher’s customary good editorial quality. The highly successful publications of easily playable arrangements of tangos by Carlos Gardel – for violin and piano and for two violins, have now been followed by an edition for violin, cello and piano. Although more suitable for advanced instrumentalists, there is also a highly interesting edition based on probably the most well-known love story of all time, S. Prokofiev‘s Suite “Romeo & Juliet”, arranged for violin and piano. All new publications by Universal Edition are available in our shops for customers to browse through and explore.

What is there left to say about Berg’s Violin Concerto? ...The fact that it is one of the best, most important, most beautiful and most interesting concertos of the 20th century?...Or should we talk about the “programme” inherent in the work?...Or about the genius of the 12-tone row, which is probably the best that has ever existed and will ever exist? I can only say that there are few works which you like to play over and over again, even after 25 years of concert-giving, in which you repeatedly find something new, which make your profession seem meaningful, important and even necessary. Berg’s Violin Concerto belongs to this group, in the wonderful UE edition which keeps you continually up-to-date with the latest musicological findings.

It is with the warmest recommendation that I welcome the publication of Robert Levin’s cadenzas and introductions to all the violin concertos by Mozart. Seldom have competent musicians given us a comprehensive view of the improvisatory elements in the familiar Mozart violin concertos. It is a task which, though unglamorous and at first sight unrewarding, proves extremely difficult and is of supreme importance to the violinist. By dint of profound knowledge and rich imagination, Robert Levin has paved the way for every violinist to explore Mozart’s world.

Cadenzas to Mozart‘s Violin Concertos These cadenzas and introductions to Mozart‘s five Violin Concertos KV 207; 211; 216; 218 and 219 offer solutions to the violinist that are stylistically and idiomatically comparable to the compositional technique of Mozart‘s own cadenzas in his piano concertos. UE 17588 [6-7]

The Universal Edition string catalogue is an extremely important new development. I am certain that the exciting publications will prove an indispensable enrichment for many violinists and will bring much more fun both to practice rooms and concert halls. They offer an opportunity to newly discover probably the most well-known love story in the arrangement of Prokofiev’s Suite from Romeo and Juliet, or delight the audience with a duet from Mozart’s The Magic Flute. I am delighted that new publications with high-quality pieces and arrangements are continually being added to the string repertoire, and I am sure to benefit from them myself.

Arvo Pärt’s music has always fascinated me. In particular, his “Fratres” opened my ears in an entirely new way. When I recorded the piece recently I was extremely pleased with the Universal Edition publication. A masterpiece needs to be presented in such a way that reflects the wishes of the composer both clearly and distinctly, as is the case with this work. At Universal Edition, Arvo Pärt – along with other prominent composers – is in very good hands!

Sequenza VIII for solo violin by Luciano Berio has been one of my favourite pieces ever since I was fortunate enough to discover it in 2004 for a DVD production in Paris. I play it whenever there is a suitable opportunity. It revolves perpetually around the note A, courageously facing up to the conflict with its neighbouring note B; it modifies and varies, sequencing and weaving its way through all its states of being for a full 10 large UE pages until it returns for 10 seconds to the A-B double stop: 10 seconds of A-B – it is an eternity. But both dissonance and resistance have long lost their capacity to offend, and A-B even sounds like a resolution and salvation. In the course of its 10-minute duration and lifetime, the initially unsolvable underlying problem has therefore become its own solution. It is momentous art. The new Urtext edition of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas is attractive even from a purely aesthetic perspective. The extensive notes on the work and its interpretation display expert coherence and include well-founded instructions for performance. Young people and students becoming acquainted with Bach for the first time will find this extensive initial explanation very helpful, and it also saves time during teaching. The clear, large printing of the parts is extremely legible. The imaginative solution for page-turning in the longer pieces deserves particular praise. This Urtext edition is an exciting addition to any music collection and a very good basis for learning.

Johann Sebastian Bach Sonatas and Partitas for Violin solo BWV 1001–1006 Editor and Notes on interpretation: Dagmar Glüxam UT 50255 [7-8]

The 12 Sonatas op. 2 by Antonio Vivaldi – recently published by Wiener Urtext Edition and long anticipated – offer attractive and serious alternatives, alongside the Corelli sonatas, to the standard Baroque sonatas by Handel and Bach, which are also available in the customary good quality of the Wiener Urtext editions. These works are ideally suited to instrumental teaching, but they will hopefully also gain greater acceptance for concert performances. The two volumes of violin sonatas by Schumann also remain in my “best of” collection. In addition to the two well-known sonatas in A minor and D minor, and the late A minor sonata, they include an Urtext edition of the complete F.A.E. Sonata.

The duets by Béla Bartók remain a fascinating source of musical inspiration for me. These character pieces are infectious in their minstrel-like expression and are indispensable for viola students; they teach us form, harmony, rhythm and melody and give us an understanding of a world of music that is almost unknown today. Transcription is not an issue in these works, in my opinion. I think it is essential for young and adult viola players to be able to enjoy this music and experience undemonstrative aural training while also developing their feel for the music.

I first encountered the Tangos by Astor Piazzolla as an amateur viola player with classical experience. The carefully prepared scores, the CD and the texts invite you to play them. For a non-professional viola player who is married to a flautist, this edition provided a welcome opportunity to enjoy playing chamber music together. The “minus-one CD” is ideal for preparatory work. The music is challenging, both in its rhythm and the solo passages, and together with the accompaniment it inspires you to practise. Masterful arrangements by Siegfried Schwab, who has written an elegantly restrained guitar part and skilfully divided the solos between the flute and viola, make this edition a true pleasure to play in a chamber music group.

This is a very fine edition of this wonderful sonata. It is very clear in its text and markings, always making the composer‘s intentions very clear, and allowing the performers to make informed decisions. I have performed it from this edition myself, and would highly recommend it.

Richard Strauss Sonata F Major Op. 6 For violoncello and piano UE 1007 [8]

The Drei Kleine Stücke by Anton Webern are, in my opinion, an ideal introductory work in several respects. Firstly, within the smallest possible space, the pieces demand from the performer the entire range of techniques and timbres that shape the complete cello literature of the 20th and 21st centuries. At the same time, the instrumentalist can use them to gain access to Anton Webern’s expressionist music. The pieces are – as it were – a preparatory exercise for his Sonata, which was published in the same year (1914). The miniature form of the work also allows the pieces to be mastered in a reasonable period of time.

Luciano Berio’s Sequenza series of solo works for various instruments, became one of the most significant of the 20th century. Berio pushed the boundaries of playability for both player and instrument thereby entering completely new musical dimensions. I feel very honoured that Maestro Berio wrote Sequenza XIV for me. Part of his inspiration came from his interest in the musical instruments of the country I came from, Sri Lanka, particularly the Kandyan drum which I have played myself since my childhood.

Ever since I was a student, the Wiener Urtext editions have remained a source of reference for me. Clear, friendly notation, a distinct differentiation between the composer’s and editor’s markings, a layout tailored to simple page-turning, and the high-quality paper make studying and working from Wiener Urtext editions a pleasure. Extensive critical notes and an expertly-written and informative preface supplement each beautifully presented edition.
