ANNIVERSARY GALA October 12, 2018
W
elcome to the College of Journalism and Communications 50th Anniversary Gala. We are honored that you have joined us for this momentous occasion.
As the current dean and an alumna, I feel very fortunate to be part of the College at this time in our history. I am grateful to those leaders who came before me – Deans Rae O. Weimer, John Paul Jones, Jr., Ralph Lowenstein, Terry Hynes and John Wright – and to the extraordinary faculty and staff, students, friends and alumni who have shaped this amazing institution. Our 50th Anniversary is as much an opportunity to revel in the days ahead as it is to celebrate the
past. Our future is exceedingly bright — not in spite of the dizzying pace of change in our fields, but because of it. In 1968, when the doors of the newly minted College first opened, no one could have imagined what the fields of advertising, journalism, public relations and telecommunication would look like today. We are living in a media world light years from the one that existed 50 years ago. Many things remain constant, though: A dedication to truth and integrity. A spirit of curiosity and invention. An embrace of professional skills development alongside academics. A commitment to making a difference in our community, in Florida and around the world. These values and guiding principles remain critically important as we endeavor to be a leader in innovation and an exemplar of scholarship and education. With your help and support, the College of Journalism and Communications can shine as the premier communication program in the country. This is our goal. This our time.

HALL OF FAME INDUCTION Rob Hiaasen, B.S. Telecommunication 1981
T
onight we are inducting Rob Hiaasen, B.S. Telecommunication 1981, into the CJC Hall of Fame. Hiaasen, a gifted writer and storyteller, was killed on June 28 in the Capital Gazette shooting.
A Florida native, he began his journalism career in radio and was a news anchor and reporter at news-talk radio stations throughout the South. In 1987, he joined The Palm Beach Post where he wrote more than 500 stories, including the award-winning investigation into the case of Dr. David J. Acer, the dentist who allegedly infected his patients with HIV. He moved to The Baltimore Sun in 1993 where he was a feature writer and later a columnist for 15 years. He joined the Capital Gazette (Annapolis, Maryland) in 2010 as an assistant editor and Sunday columnist. Earlier this year, the Maryland, Delaware, District of Columbia Press Association awarded him first place in a feature column category for a piece about only realizing as a grownup that the Fort Lauderdale beach that he frequented as a child was segregated. He also worked as an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland Philip Merrill College of Journalism. Hiaasen was a Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford University in 2004, where he focused on screenwriting and narrative journalism. Hall of Fame member Carl Hiaasen, B.S. Journalism 1974, said of his brother, “He spent his whole gifted career as a journalist, and he believed profoundly in the craft and mission of serving the public’s right to know the news.” Baltimore Sun columnist Kevin Cowherd, a close friend, said, “Rob was a terrific reporter because he had an innate curiosity. He was a master of asking questions of the people he wrote about. It was one of his strengths. He was also drawn to quirky characters. In all his writing he tried to bring out the humanity.”

INVESTMENTS
O
ver the past 50 years, donor gifts have been critical in providing students with world-class experiences and helping the College establish a national reputation. They have provided students with the financial means to take advantage of new opportunities, offered the
College the ability to hire renowned faculty, provided technology necessary to ensure students are prepared for a rapidly changing media environment, and much more. Three gifts over the past five decades, in particular, have been defining for the future of the College. Starting in 1981, Joseph and Marion Brechner provided funds to establish the Brechner Eminent Scholar Chair, Marion B. Brechner First Amendment Project, Brechner Research Fellowship and the Brechner Center for Freedom of Information. The First Amendment Project is dedicated to contemporary issues affecting the First Amendment freedoms of speech, press, thought, assembly and petition. The Brechner Center advances understanding, appreciation and support for freedom of information and to foster open government and a participatory democracy. These investments have made it possible for the College to become a national leader in First Amendment, freedom of the press and freedom of information scholarship and advocacy. The Jerry and Judy Davis Communication Technology fund, established in 1996, is a gift that has had a tremendous impact on the College. The fund allows our students to use the latest technology, making them uniquely suited to “plug and play” when they enter the marketplace. Our labs and workspaces can be updated on a schedule that keeps pace with technology, unlike some peer institutions whose faculty and students must work on computers and software that are woefully out of date. The College would not be able to provide unparalleled immersion experiences to students without this support. The Davis’ also donated $21 million to UF toward cancer research and care. The Alvin G. and Effie D. Flanagan Endowment Fund, established in 2000, has enabled the College to provide state-of-the-art broadcast facilities and enhance immersion experiences for our students. The fund also supports salaries for the director of the Innovation News Center and director of Consumer Media Research, equipment upgrades that benefit both students and the community, expanded space for operations, and financial support for graduate students and faculty development. These and other gifts during our first 50 years have established a foundation of excellence. The College’s path to preeminence will require additional significant gifts. Future gifts will cement our position as the top communication program in the country. - 15 -
