monthly welcome Hi everyone! Welcome to the first newsletter of the year. I’m Marissa, your UF CKI editor for the ‘20-’21 year. Each month you’ll hear a welcome message from our board. I hope you enjoy the newsletters this year. Stay safe and enjoy!

what is CKI? Circle K International is the world’s largest student-led collegiate service organization.
Circle K is a one division a part of a HUGE service organization!
three tenets service We do all types of community service. We have projects for all, whether you are passionate about kids, homelessness, the environment, or animals.
fellowship We want everyone to feel like a part of the UF CKI family. So we offer socials every week so members can build relationships and have fun!
leadership We have multiple leadership opportunities. You can hold positions from committee chairs to district board members. Workshops and conferences throughout the year build your skills and portfolio.

summer service showdown This summer, we challenged our members to get creative with how they serve their communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, the CKI Summer Service Showdown was created. Members entered their socially distanced projects for a chance to win a special prize. This year’s winner is Amelia Glas with her kitten fostering project!

Kitten Fostering I fostered 4 kittens over the summer. I took care of them until they were 2lbs. and able to get spayed/neutered and then adopted. Summer is known as “kitten season�. Peggy Adams, the animal rescue shelter we fostered through, had too many kittens and needed foster families to help them care for the kittens. Fostering also helps socialize the kittens and makes them more adoptable.

A couple weeks ago I went to Freedom Park where I noticed there was trash below the boardwalks. There is no way to get below the boardwalks and no one is currently working at the park so we had to think of a way to pick up the trash. Billy, Vincent, and I figured out if we used pool nets we could reach far enough to pick up the littered bottles. We went around the boardwalk area picking up bottles and then walked around the sidewalks picking up any other garbage we could find. The whole adventure took about 2.5 hours. A lot of parks are open but do not have anyone working at them due to COVID. This causes trash to be left out and no one is there to clean it up.

COVID-19 statement COVID-19 has changed everyones plans and daily lives. We didn’t want this disease to keep us from doing what we love the most, serving our community. Therefore, UF CKI has implemented changes to ensure our members’ safety and to make service opportunities available to everyone. Some of the changes we have made include:
weekly meetings have been moved online
a mix of online and in-person events
wearing masks at all in-person CKI events
provision of hand sanitizer
limitation of # for inside events and # for outside events
adjusted active membership requirements
more are added as needed

fun in the time of quarantine John Podojil This summer I: grew some melons in the garden, changed my major, signed up for summer classes last minute (gotta get those credits) I learned: Baking and cooking! Madison Vaught This summer I: spent a lot of time indoors which forced me to learn how to cook learned I learned: Basic Level Support CPR and I practiced my eyeshadow skills Perry Nielsen Jr. This summer I: went on a bunch of road trips! I learned: how to make a perfect omelet!
Shanyn Thompson This summer I: took summer classes, so that occupied most of my time this quarantine. I learned: how to drive a boat!
