Monthly Welcome

Monthly Welcome Happy fall, everyone! It's your favorite UF CKI VP, Olivia. We have officially passed the half-way point of the fall semester, and I can't believe how much we've already accomplished together! Before you head off to read the rest of the newsletter, I wanted to take a moment to thank all of you who came out to Trick-or-Treat for the Homeless! The event was a huge success, and we collected an insane number of donations for the homeless population here in Gainesville thanks to all of your hard work. Now, enjoy a break while taking a look at everything we did this month! :)

Here are some movies that Olivia recommends! Kiki's Delivery Service (1989) Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010) Promising Young Woman (2020) Cars 2 (2011) Easy A (2010) La La Land (2016) Volume 13, Issue 4

MD&E Events

MD&E Events: Skydiving Contributor: Amelia Glas

"Two years ago when I was a freshman, I had the idea to have a skydiving social with CKI. I thought it was an awesome idea, but when I presented it to Patrick (the president at the time), he told me that it would never happen and that he would give me a challenge point if I could make a skydiving social happen. Not one to back down from a challenge, I immediately got to work making it happen. We had 12 people sign up, we picked a date, and then the morning we were supposed to go, Skydive Palatka called saying they had to cancel our appointment because of weather. So, we rescheduled. The next morning, we headed out to Skydive Palatka and waited for 4 hours before they finally told us that the event would not be happening because of cloud coverage."

"Then, the holiday season hit and everyone was busy. Spring semester started and we were trying to regroup and find a new date and then COVID hit. By the end of the year, the event hadn’t happened, but Payton (the president after Patrick), promised to uphold the promise of a challenge point. Because COVID was still raging last year and the vaccine wasn’t out yet, it didn’t happen, but Sam (our current president), promised to uphold the promise as well. Finally, on October 16, the Skydiving Social happened! Myself and 5 other CKI members all jumped out of a plane from 2 miles above the sky and made it back to land safely, earning our social point and I received the long awaited challenge point."

MD&E Events

MD&E Events: Big/Little Contributor: Amelia Glas

"One tradition that CKI has is Big/Little. Big/Little is usually an event held by sororities that CKI adopted as a mentorship program. Basically, for the span of about two weeks, there are tons of social events where bigs and littles get to know each other. At the end of the two weeks, the MD&E chair has everyone send in who they want to have as their big or little and then gets to work matching people up. This process can be pretty tricky sometimes since the preferences don’t always line up and it becomes a fun challenge of matching people based on their personalities."

Page 8

Gator K-Munication

MD&E Events

"For the week after preferences are due, bigs text their littles from an anonymous phone number, sort of as a way for the little to try to guess who might be their big. Finally, at the end of the week, reveal happens and littles learn who their big is! Every year, family groups expand. A little might find out that they have siblings, a GBIG (grand-big), cousins, and maybe even a GGBig (great grand-big)! This year, reveal is at Lock-in, so make sure you attend if you’re participating in Big/Little!"
