Yes, I know it's only the end of September but that still means spooky season is upon us! With that, welcome to the September Newsletter! If you don't know me, I'm Emily, your Editor, and newsletter making is my thing As you read further, you'll find our member spotlights, a September recap, shout outs, and other fun things! How did you hear about CKI? Heard about it from the tabling at Turlington

Favorite CKI memory?

The Butterbeer at the Harry Potter Social That was awesome What do you expect to get out of your time in CKI?

Idk being able to do service events while having fun sounds like a pretty sweet deal What are you most excited for this year?

Lock in sounds like a super fun event

Do you have any reflections about your time in the club so far?

From the first service event I attended Guardian Angels to the various socials, have had an amazing time here Really happy with the balance of different type of events and the frequency. Really glad I joined it

Brandon Silva

What year are you?

Graduate Student

Major(s): Computer Science

Why did you choose the major you did?

First, Robotics in High School sparked my passion for engineering and AI I taught myself to code in high school because of robotics That continued through my undergraduate degree and now I'm on a PhD track researching AI for medicinal applications Favorite Tenet?

Fellowship

What keeps you coming back to CKI?

I really love meeting and working with people in CKI It is a really social club and I enjoy helping the community and talking to awesome people all the time, no matter the event Favorite CKI memory?

My first Jungle Friends event was quite a difficult service event, but that feeling of the shower after is still vivid in my memory and felt great after doing a lot of great work there

What are you most excited for this year?

I'm excited to get more involved in CKI. I signed up as a Big for Big/little and plan to attend the lock ins and as much service events as possible to become an active member

Do you have any reflections about your time in the club?

I'm a long time veteran for service, having doing Key Club all of high school and CKI for most of my college career

Looking back, my fondest memories was the laughs I shared with my friends and the fun I had helping the community with them Fellowship is definitely something I love about CKI and what keeps me coming back

Food4Kids

We helped pack bags of food for kids in Alachua County

September 3 -

Guardian Angels

Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs has been rescuing, raising, training and then donating individually trained medical service dogs to veterans and others struggling with a myriad of disabilities. We volunteered as puppy huggers!

Adopt-a-Street

As always, we had our monthly Adopt A Street cleanup where we picked up trash along the street!

Picnic Social After Adopt a Street, we enjoyed a relaxing picnic with our fellow CKers by Lake Alice.

Our First GBM of the Semester!

We had so many new and returning members join us for our first General Body Meeting of the Fall Semester. It was great to see so many new faces!

Ice Cream Social

To celebrate the start of the new CKI year, we got some Italian ice after the General Body Meeting!

Bread of the Mighty

Bread of the Mighty Food Bank focuses on providing hope and encouragement to people in the community facing hunger by increasing access to sufficient and nutritious food. As volunteers, we packed and sorted the donated food.

September 8Game Show Night

We had a Family Feud themed game show night!

Krishna Lunch Social

We enjoyed Krishna Lunch together on a beautiful day in the Plaza of the Americas!

Boba Social

We had our first boba social of the year and enjoyed some tasty drinks together!

We helped pack bags of food for kids in Alachua County

Gainesville Community Ministries

We organized and help distribute food at Gainesville Community Ministries, a local food pantry

September 13 -

Days for Girls

Days for Girls is an organization that prepares and distributes sustainable menstrual health solutions to girls who would otherwise miss school during their periods. We helped assemble these sustainable menstrual health solutions

We joined the Kiwanians for their bi monthly lunch!

September 15 -

Operation Catnip

Operation Catnip advocates for and provides services for community cats and their caregivers in order to achieve a vision of a humane community that embraces compassionate care for all cats We helped deep clean the catio and got to see some kittens!

We decorated the sidewalks outside of the Reitz Union with positive messages and information about our next GBM!

We showed off our gator spirit at the UF v USF home football game!

Bob Ross Fundraiser

We had our first Bob Ross fundraiser of the year and made some artistic marvels (as always)

Jungle Friends

Jungle Friends Primate

Sanctuary provides permanent sanctuary care for monkeys being retired from laboratory research, ex pets, or monkeys who have been confiscated by the authorities We volunteered to clean habitats, construct rope ladders, plant trees, collect food bowls, make toys for the monkeys and landscape.

We studied for exams in the Marston Library with our fellow CKIers!

Salvation Army

We helped to sort and organize donations at the Salvation Army Thrift Store.

September 22 -

GRACE Marketplace

GRACE marketplace is a one stop homeless resource center serving Gainesville and Alachua County. We volunteered to serve a warm meal at Cafe 131!

Harry Potter Social

We had a magical night watching Harry Potter and drinking delicious butter beer!

We volunteered to help set up, check in runners, and clean up the Depot Park Parkrun!

Wilmot Botanical Gardens is dedicated to advancing patient care, research and service through its vibrant and growing therapeutic horticulture program As volunteers, we helped with various tasks assigned by the garden staff

A Final Note From the Editor

September was such a fun month! We all started to get settled into the new school year, and we got opportunities to participate in such cool events organized by our committee chairs. I just wanted to also say how happy I am to have met so many new members this semester, and to have seen y'all become so involved and active. It has been such a pleasure to get to know you, and huge props to ALL of you for being as amazing as you are.
