HERBERT WERTHEIM COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING
TRAILBLAZING IN AI RESEARCH, EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT VISION The University of Florida’s (UF) AI University Initiative is a multidisciplinary enterprise that seeks to position UF as the national model for AI research, technological advancement, and next-generation workforce development.
HIPERGATOR UF houses one of the most powerful supercomputers worldwide and the most powerful university-owned supercomputer in the nation. This research and education partnership is anchored by a $80 million gift from UF alumnus Chris Malachowsky and NVIDIA, the leading AI company he co-founded. The third generation HiPerGator works with NVIDIA’s most advanced AI software, 140 NVIDIA DGX™ A100 systems together with 1,120 NVIDIA A100 Tensor Core GPUs and high-performance NVIDIA Mellanox HDR 200Gb/s InfiniBand networking to deliver 700 petaflops of AI performance across the entire campus.
RESEARCH AREAS At the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering, we have more than 120 faculty currently conducting AI-related research to solve challenging problems in various application domains such as the environment, national security, business, and agriculture. Areas of strength include the following: ■ AI + Agriculture ■ AI + Cybersecurity ■ AI + Environment ■ AI + IoT ■ AI + Healthcare ■ AI + National Security ■ AI at the Edge ■ Autonomous Systems ■ Digital Twins ■ Ethics and Fairness ■ FinTech
AI-ENABLED CENTERS AND INSTITUTES THE HERBERT WERTHEIM COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING HAS MULTIPLE AI-ENABLED CENTERS AND INSTITUTES TO EMPOWER FACULTY AND STUDENTS TO CONDUCT CUTTING-EDGE RESEARCH.
FLORIDA INSTITUTE FOR CYBERSECURITY (FICS) RESEARCH
NSF CENTER FOR BIG LEARNING (CBL)
FICS Research is the nation’s premier multidisciplinary research institute specializing in the advancement of cybersecurity. A major research thrust involves leveraging advances in AI to enhance the security and protection of data and systems that are of critical importance in commerce, finance, management, governance, defense, healthcare, education, and transportation.
CBL is founded on a vision of creating intelligence and leveraging collective wisdom from academia, industry, and governments in large-scale deep learning (DL), intelligent platforms, and DL-enabled big data applications in a broad spectrum of disciplines.
UF CENTER FOR COASTAL SOLUTIONS (CCS)
WARREN B. NELMS INSTITUTE FOR THE CONNECTED WORLD
The CCS brings together unparalleled expertise, resources and infrastructure from UF, the State, the private sector and philanthropic organizations that will completely transform the coastal hazard response paradigm by leveraging nextgeneration monitoring, AI-driven analyses and forecasts, along with precision interventions.
The Nelms Institute is established to lead research and education in all aspects of the intelligent connection of things, processes, people, and data to address major world challenges, including health, energy, transportation, and manufacturing.
