Welcome back to the Parthenon, the Interfraternity Council’s semester newsletter! It has been an exciting and busy spring semester around the Greek Life Office. IFC Exec and Committee leaders have been working diligently to further the fraternal movement and set a strong example for others to follow on our campus. As advisor, I stress the need to our newest group of (inter)fraternity leaders to communicate, to commit to their fraternity, and to have character. After reflecting on working with last year’s group of fraternity leaders it became evident to me that these three characteristics were what separated the highest performing leadership from the rest of the pack. I have already noticed this semester that there are many men striving to raise the standards for their chapters, communicating frequently, and dedicating their time and efforts to the goals for which they hope to accomplish over the next year. To quote Coach Taylor from the show Friday Night Lights, “that’s what character is, it’s in the trying.”

COMMITTEE SELECTION IFC Chairs & Vice-Chairs Select 74 Committee Members Committee Leadership The IFC Committees serve the Council in the following areas: Chapter Development, Scholarship, Risk Management, Programming, Public Relations, Community Service, Technology, and Recruitment. IFC Committees are made up of 8-10 members from the Council's fraternities. These committees assist in the completion of goals and projects for the betterment of the Council, fraternities individually, as well as the community. The IFC Executive Board has made it a top priority to re-emphasize the committee system to allow for greater participation and leadership development opportunities within the Council. At the beginning of this semester, Committee Leadership selected 74 fraternity men to participate and through this increase of the number of men serving on committees, the IFC has expanded its yearly goals to greater benefit the Athens-Clarke County community and the University.

“The scholarship committee has numerous goals focused on improving the academic excellence of the Interfraternity Council. We aim to increase awareness of the IFC members' outstanding achievements in the classroom and continue to stabilize the progress of fraternities as a whole. We will work with each chapter on an individual basis and provide any necessary assistance to make sure that their scholarship programs are as effective as possible in promoting academic success for their members. As a committee, we will award scholarships to individuals within the Greek system who represent outstanding academic work, campus involvement, and leadership to help continue IFC's strong academic legacy. Overall, we hope to make a lasting impact on the scholarship program of the Interfraternity Council.” – Matt

“The Risk Management Committee this year will be focusing on educating chapters on liabilities for both the fraternity and the brothers' safety. We helped set up a seminar for chapters' risk managers, presidents, and other members of leadership. We work directly with Franklin Perlis, Vice President of Risk Management on a weekly basis. Keeping a solid name for the IFC as a whole is a goal of our committee as well.” – JD DeYonker

“The Community Service Committee provides a unique and special opportunity for fraternal chapters to interact with each other philanthropically. In the upcoming semester, we are planning different events such as Red Cross Blood Drives, a Golf Tournament benefitting local Athens charities, a clothing drive, and other service opportunities that become available. Furthermore, we are working with each Fraternity individually to act as a resource in order to make each chapter’s philanthropic efforts a success. Giving back to not only the UGA community but also Athens-Clarke County is very important, and the Interfraternity Council is always looking for new and exciting ways to reach out to the community. If your organization is interested in partnering with IFC, or if you have any ideas for service opportunities, please feel free to contact us with your suggestions.” –
Zachary Stines
Chapter Development
“The Chapter Development committee’s main goal as a group for this school year will be the continued improvement of each one of the Interfraternity Council’s chapters in every way possible. It is important for a chapter to be strong in all aspects of fraternity life: academic, social, and otherwise. This semester, as a committee, we plan to reward those chapters that excel in these areas, as well as help those Michael Griffin (Vice-Chair) chapters that are seeking Not Pictured: Morgan Wells (Chair) improvement. We will do this by recognizing those within the Greek community who strive to make their chapter better, and by working with all members of the Interfraternity Council to further develop and improve their chapters.” – Morgan Wells
Programming
Rob Davis (Chair) Not Pictured: Kenneth Haesly (Vice-Chair)
“During this semester the Programming Committee's goal is to come up with a program that will be beneficial to all the chapters in IFC. Currently we are in the process of developing a first aid/cpr certification program that will be delivered by the American Red Cross. Also, as a committee we will continue to brainstorm
ideas for future programs that will benefit all chapters in IFC and their members. Though we have a program already in the works, we would like to have a second one before the semester is over. As we continue to work on some ideas for future programs, we look forward to the Red Cross program which will be taking place in the near future. It is our hope that we can establish programs that can be beneficial to all IFC fraternities, and that we can establish a precedent for implementing these informative programs in the coming semesters.” – Rob Davis
