Welcome to UGA Presents The Performing Arts Center is a true gem in our community. I am impressed by all who have supported this remarkable venue since it opened in 1996. The 2018 -19 season marks my first as curator and presenter of the center’s world-class performing arts series, now called UGA Presents. I hope you will enjoy the international scope of our programming throughout the year. This season’s program contains some of the finest musicians, theatre-makers, dance, and circus artists currently gracing the stages of the world’s illustrious venues—from Carnegie Hall and the Ryman Auditorium to Broadway and beyond. I’m intrigued by the way these artists connect with us as we watch and engage with them from the seats. What will these experiences do to us? How will we be transformed? We will learn, love, laugh, and maybe even cry as these luminaries entertain, teach, and break down the barriers that so easily separate us. This is the power of live performance— and the reason I hope everyone can find a place here. My great desire is for all people to enjoy something wonderful at the Performing Arts Center. I hope this place will reflect the diversity of our community. It is a place of discovery and learning, a place to see yourself represented on stage in some way. Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Robert Spano, conductor Kirill Gerstein, piano RACHMANINOV: Piano Concerto No. 2 TCHAIKOVSKY: Symphony No. 5
Russian-American pianist and composer Sergei Rachmaninov, who died 75 years ago in Beverly Hills, left a legacy of rousing compositions that are considered among the very best of the 20th century. The ASO celebrates Rachmaninov with the “flat-out fabulous” Kirill Gerstein (Cleveland Classical ) and the Piano Concerto No. 2. One of the best-loved pieces of all time, the “Rach 2” combines luxurious melodies with fistfuls of notes. It’s a powerhouse program rounded out by Tchaikovsky’s high-octane Fifth Symphony.

When Gustav Mahler died, only his widow knew of the enigmatic Tenth Symphony. He left his final opus only partially orchestrated, but its tragic melodies, its shape, and substance were all on paper waiting to be snatched from the grave. This season Athens audiences can hear Mahler’s magnificent swan song masterfully realized by the British musician, scholar, and broadcaster Deryck Cooke. Musical pioneer Matt Haimovitz begins by performing three of the suites in separate locations around the UGA campus over the course of two days, prior to a final performance of the remaining three suites in Hodgson Concert Hall. Each suite features an overture composed by Philip Glass, Du Yun, and Vijay Iyer, and others, resulting in a unique experience unparalleled in the classical music world.

Founded in 1993 by four Israeli musicians, the Jerusalem Quartet has become a regular and beloved guest chamber ensemble on many of the world’s great concert stages. The quartet is renowned for its wide repertoire and stunning depth of expression, with a warm, full sound and a balance between high and low voices at its core. The UGA performance sees the group apply its colorful interpretation to works by Haydn, Bartók, and Beethoven.

Please contact the Box Office if you have questions about specific performances. Accessibility The Performing Arts Center is accessible to people using wheelchairs or with restricted mobility. An elevator serving all levels is available. Please contact the box office to make advance arrangements if you require special assistance.
Concessions are available for purchase in the Performing Arts Center lobby for all UGA Presents performances. Food and drink are prohibited inside the performance venues. Complimentary cough lozenges are available at the coat check desk. Please do not unwrap lozenges during performances.
