UGA license plates support scholarship funds
Young alumni receive awards from schools and colleges
The Bulldog Nation has a new car tag for the University of Georgia alumni and friends to display. UGA is releasing a new, sleeker version of its specialty state of Georgia license tag featuring the university’s iconic “power G” through the Georgia Department of Revenue. The new tag features a red, black and silver-gray design encompassing the entire plate. Beyond the display of Bulldog pride, the tag proceeds also raise money for UGA need-based scholarships. For each specialty tag on the road, $10 annually goes to scholarships through the UGA Foundation. “With 60,000 UGA tags currently on the road—more than any other university tag in the state— the specialty tag program goes a long way in helping Georgians attend the state’s flagship university,” said Tom Jackson, UGA’s vice president for public affairs. “We are hoping that with the new design there will be even more interest in people willing to change their plates and to show their loyalty to the University of Georgia,” Jackson said. The new tag replaces the previous incarnation, a solid white tag that featured the university’s bulldog mascot, Uga. The old tag will no longer be available for purchase, but those who have one still help the scholarship program. “If you have the bulldog tag on your car and want to keep it, you can do that,” said Jackson. “The university still gets the annual $10 toward need-based scholarships.” Anyone, including current UGA tag owners, requesting the new UGA tag will be required to pay a one-time $25 manufacturing fee and an annual $35 special tag fee in addition to standard tag fees and taxes (if applicable). After receiving a temporary tag, the specialty tag will be shipped to the driver’s home address within seven to 10 business days. More information on the UGA license tag can be found here or see the Georgia Department of Revenue website for more information about motor vehicle tags.

ames Whitley’s success building Landmark Properties, Inc. began during his time at the University of Georgia. He learned the importance of connectivity and networking, through his involvement with the Greek community, and the friendships he established in college still make Athens home. “My experience at UGA was heavily involved with Greek leadership and philanthropy. Through those efforts, I learned a tremendous amount about human interaction, about how to lead, how to manage, and so that certainly has translated into my vision and our
company’s ability to build a great team.” To ensure future students have similar transformative experiences, Whitley and Landmark made a $25,000 commitment to the Greek Life Leadership Fund. His generosity provides scholarships to outstanding Greek leaders and supports the annual awards banquet. In addition to his financial commitment, James and his wife, Jessica, serve on the Student Affairs Advisory Board. Whitley and his business partner, Wes Rogers (BBA '99, MBA '04), started Landmark Properties in 2004 to meet a demand of the university student

population for “an off-campus housing community that had the amenities of apartments but the benefits of a single family house.” Although Landmark’s business model started as “developing, building, and leasing student neighborhoods,” Rogers and Whitley quickly “pioneered the student cottage concept” and began to build, own, and operate the communities. With this concept successfully in place at 14 campuses across the country, Landmarks’s efforts have enhanced student experiences and these college communities. Landmark is in the final stages of completion on its newest concept in downtown Athens– urban off-campus student housing within walking distance of campus. Through these experiences, he learned that “one of the most critical pieces to building a successful company is your human capital, your people.” Whitley and Rogers live this lesson having formal partnerships with the Terry College of Business as well as the College of Family and Consumer Sciences. Whitley estimates that ninety percent of Landmark’s corporate team are University of Georgia graduates. It heavily recruits
UGA students and alumni and offers many internship opportunities to its students. Whitley’s priorities are family, giving back through philanthropy, and the success of others. The Whitleys enjoy being a part of the Athens community and are looking forward to being new parents. They are expecting their first child, a baby girl, in August. “My experience at UGA was tremendous. It had a lot to do with molding me and setting me on a path. I would like to help, to the extent I can, in providing that opportunity for others who find themselves in similar positions at a young age. With more of us alumni working to better our communities, it increases the value, the perception, and the awareness for our degrees from the University of Georgia.”

Over $700,000 raised for charity by UGA students UGA Students participate in philanthropic efforts throughout the year. The causes allow students to make a positive impact in a number of areas. This spring, over 3,000 students participated in two events which raised more than $700,000. In February, 1,000+ students took part in the 18th annual UGA Dance Marathon. Students spent 24-hours in the Tate Student Center Grand Hall dancing, playing video games and much more, while raising a recordbreaking $507,203 for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta’s Comprehensive Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit. In April, UGA’s Relay for Life student organization brought together more than 2,000 students together to raise $202,586 for cancer research. The top Greek fundraising team, Pi Beta Phi/Pike raised over $22,000, and the top nonGreek team, Team Laura, raised over $10,000. “UGA student leaders and participants exemplify the passion and dedication of UGA’s students in giving back,” said Eric Atkinson, assistant vice president for student engagement. “Our students are not only the future
leaders of our communities, but their current leadership is making a great impact now.” For more information on UGA Miracle, click here. For more information on UGA Relay for Life, click here.
Class of 2014 Gift to the Institute for Leadership Advancement The Institute for Leadership Advancement’s Leonard Leadership Scholars Class of 2007 established a class gift tradition that has continued each year, with this year’s class setting a record. With pledge forms tallied, Director of the Institute for Leadership Advancement Mark Huber accepted the 5-year class pledge of $50,404. This class gift, will help to ensure that future leadership students will have the same amazing experiences in retreats, corporate visits, mentoring, and service-learning opportunities. The Leonard Leadership Scholars Classes, made up of 30 students, have celebrated 100% participation in their class gift each year, which includes both pledges over time and lump sum donations. As a specialty program external from any single academic department in the Terry College of Business, the majority of ILA support comes through individual donors — students, alumni, parents, and corporate sponsors. ILA considers
it a true tribute to the success of the program when ILA graduates give back to the next values-based leaders participating in ILA’s amazing programs.

What is your favorite UGA memory? Most of my favorite memories revolve around UGA football games and tailgating with friends and family. Besides the glorious fall Saturdays, I’ll never forget walking through the Arch for the first time after graduation. I turned around and went right back through it over and over again.
What are you currently reading? The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin
Why you give back to UGA? I hope to help continue the legacy of the university so that decades of students get the same experience I was blessed with. I hope one day my son will follow in his parents’ footsteps and enjoy UGA as much as we did.
What is your favorite UGA memory? Standing on the field in Sanford Stadium with my Dad for Homecoming Court in 2002
How did your education at UGA prepare you for your current job? UGA’s College of Pharmacy is phenomenal. The faculty and staff provided me with all of the knowledge and experience a pharmacy student could ask for. They definitely deserve their upstanding reputation as the State’s leading pharmacy school. What is the greatest lesson you learned at UGA? UGA provides such a diverse student body and endless numbers of activities and opportunities. While at UGA I learned to embrace different cultures, people, and experiences and not stay in the box that I had grown up in. In 10 years... I hope to own my own independent pharmacy. My husband and I would love the opportunity to eventually move our family back to Athens. We’d really love for UGA to have another National Championship to celebrate and 10 more victories over Tech in the record books.
What is your favorite part of your job? Working with families and watching children grow up alongside their parents. Kids also make me laugh everyday!
Why you give back to UGA? To hopefully help others have an amazing college experience, like I did, and to say thank you! How did your education at UGA prepare you for your current job? It thoroughly prepared me academically, but more importantly, it prepared me socially. UGA gave me confidence to interact with all types of people. What is the greatest lesson you learned at UGA? Good things and great people don’t just come to you, you have to get involved; seek them out. In 10 years... I hope to still be “the best” to my, then, 12 year old daughter. Who are you inspired by? By dad’s dedication to serving others, and my husband’s well-roundedness. Your next trip to Athens will be… In October for my dear friend’s wedding!
Students show their gratitude during Thank-a-Donor Day Hundreds of UGA students expressed their gratitude to university supporters on April 17 during the third annual Thank-a-Donor Day on the Tate Student Center Plaza. The day was organized by UGA’s Division of Development and Alumni Relations. The event offered multiple ways for students to say thank you to alumni and friends who show their annual support. Participants hand-wrote nearly 600 personalized notes, signed a large card, designed posters and recorded video messages. The cards will be mailed directly to donors and the multimedia messages will be shared with more than 50,000 current donors through a video of highlights from the event. “Big Man on Campus” Rance Nix, Miss UGA Adeline Kenerly, the UGA Ballroom Performance Group and Hairy Dawg provided entertainment during the event. Thank-a-Donor Day is an opportunity to educate the UGA community about the importance of private giving as well as give students the opportunity to thank donors for their generosity and encourage a culture of philanthropy and gratitude at UGA, according to Tony Stringer, director of donor relations and stewardship.
“Studies have shown that a habit of expressing appreciation has a positive effect on your life and college performance,” Stringer said. “We have planned several more opportunities this coming school year for students to express their gratitude to the tens of thousands of donors who make a difference in the lives of every UGA student every day. Donations support nearly every aspect of a student’s experience at UGA.”
