Fun Facts About Valentines Day In Great Britain, Valentine's Day began to be popularly celebrated around the 17th century. By the middle of the 18th century, it was common for friends and lovers in all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes. By the end of the century, printed cards began to replace written letters. Ready-made cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions in a time when direct expression of one's feelings was discouraged.
According to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated one billion valentine cards are sent each year, making Valentine's Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. (An estimated 2.6 billion cards are sent for Christmas.)
3% of pet owners give valentines to their pets. VOLUME 11, ISSUE 2
Approximately 85 percent of all valentines are purchased by women, while 73% of flowers are purchased by men.
In addition to the United States, Valentine's Day is celebrated in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, and Australia.
There are many opinions as to who was the original Valentine, with the most popular theory that it was a clergyman who was executed for secretly marrying couples in ancient Rome. In any event, in 496 A.D., Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honor St. Valentine. Through the centuries, the Christian holiday became a time to exchange love messages and St. Valentine became a patron saint of lovers.
Valentine greetings were popular as far back as the Middle Ages (written Valentine's didn't begin to appear until after 1400).
Over 50 percent of all Valentine's Day cards are purchased in the six days prior to the observance, making Valentine's Day a procrastinator's delight! Source: The History Channel
