2021-2022 Annual Report

I am reflecting on the accomplishments of House of Ruth over the past year. I can’t help but focus on the people – those we serve, those that deliver the services, those that donate their time through board governance or volunteer service, and those that support our mission with their generous donations.

Without dedicated people, we could not complete our mission. The families that come to us for help, rely upon committed, trained professionals to guide them on their own path of empowerment and choice. Our team of trauma-informed care specialists have a deep level of empathy and expertise needed to support survivors on their healing journey. Whether we’re providing emergency shelter, counseling, housing resources, or case management, I know survivors receive quality care from the staff and volunteers at House of Ruth.

our dedicated staff, the resilient individuals, and families we serve, and our countless supporters such as you, that make this work possible. For us, this past year has been full of growth. We are now decades away from a hotline started around a kitchen table, yet our core mission – preventing domestic violence and ensuring the safety and wellbeing of those impacted by it remains the same.

Over the last several years, House of Ruth has evolved from our origins as a small non-profit organization. Our growth is a response to the ever-changing obstacles survivors of domestic violence face. While our budget shows this growth in numbers, it doesn’t capture all the ways we are becoming leaders in our field. We arrived here through the guidance and support of other organizations and community partners, and now we find ourselves being called upon to offer this guidance and support to others.

That is why your support is so critical to this work and why we are so grateful for you. We all share a purpose: to support survivors of domestic violence in their journey towards safety, independence, and empowerment, all while looking ahead and imagining their own continued growth. Thank you for your support and confidence in the work of House of Ruth. -

Survivors at Risk of Homelessness

Over the last 45 years House of Ruth has become one of the leading domestic violence agencies in the region, serving and advocating for individuals impacted by domestic violence. According to the National Center on Family Homelessness, “Approximately 50% of all women who are homeless report that doestic violence was the immediate cause of their homelessness.” Additionally, on a typical day, there are more than 20,000 phone calls placed to domestic violence hotlines nationwide (NCADV, 2020). Intimate partner violence continues plaguing our communities, causing physical, financial, and mental harm to individuals in abusive relationships.

House of Ruth’s Housing Program offers rapid re-housing and homeless prevention supportive services to survivors of domestic violence and their families. Through several private and government grants, the housing team aids individuals with rental subsidies, move-in costs, relocation, utility assistance, furniture, and appliance assistance, and serves as a liaison between landlords and clients, advocating for those with low or no credit, past evictions, and limited income. Additionally, our Housing Department offers in-home counseling, case management, and financial planning.

After receiving a 6-month rental subsidy and case management services through House of Ruth, not only did Rachel obtain fulltime employment, but she saved enough money to purchase the mobile home she was renting. Rachel was able to reunite with her children and offer them a safe home. Housing Navigator, Walter Solorzano says, “The most rewarding part of my job is seeing individuals open the door to their home for the first time. That against all odds, they finally have a place to call home.”

One of the greatest accomplishments the housing team has achieved, aside from housing survivors of domestic violence, is partnering with over 300 landlords and establishing strong relationships to ensure units are immediately available to our clients. Last year, 96 families were housed through our Housing Program. Housing Services Manager, Annette Gonzalez, says, “Housing is a human right; everyone deserves to feel safe.“

Dining Room Remodel & Residential Program Kitchen

House of Ruth was able to renovate the kitchen and dining room in our 55-bed shelter with the support of capital grants from The Ahmanson Foundation and the S. Mark Taper Foundation. The goal of the renovation was to create a safe, accessible, and welcoming space for all our residents and staff to enjoy. Residential Services Director, Kimberly Mason had the following to say about the recent renovation:

“For many shelter residents, being able to prepare meals in a safe and welcoming space, where equipment is functional, accessible, and available, is invaluable. The equipment, space, and environment in the new shelter kitchen and dining area is functional, easily accessible to all residents, and provides accommodation to individuals with disabilities. It also provides a space that is welcoming to children while also addressing the need for safety. The kitchen/dining room offers residents calm, nurturing, and beautiful environment where families gather safely and share mealtimes with each other.

Preparing and sharing food with family, friends, and another human being can be so healing and renewing. This is undoubtedly one of the most important gifts that the shelter kitchen and dining room renovation has and will continue to give to residents. Last year hundreds of families were able to access nutritious food from our renovated kitchen.
