What is Formula Student? Formula Student is an educational motorsport competition organised by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. The aim of the competition is to encourage and develop talented young engineering students from universities all over the world who are tasked with designing and building a prototype single seat racing car for a mock manufacturing firm. Upon completion, the prototype car is evaluated in terms of design; production cost; reliability; maintainability and performance, by industry professionals at the Formula Student event held annually at the Silverstone International Race Circuit. Although the Formula Student team at the University of Glasgow is a relative newcomer, UGRacing has quickly become established as a highly sought after extra-curricular activity, attracting some of the best engineering students at the University. The competition is widely respected within the School of Engineering and is seen as an excellent means for students to gain first-hand experience of real world engineering problems. The establishment of strong industrial links is critical to the success of UGRacing. These links benefit the team in many ways, including the opportunity of obtaining advice from industry and of winning sponsorship for the team either financially or in kind. In return, these links give our industrial partners direct access to a group of the most talented engineers of the future and our students are made aware of cutting edge employment opportunities with world class companies.

Formula Student is »» A high performance engineering project. »» An unmatched demonstration of real-world engineering experience for engineering employers and the motorsport industry »» An intense, ten month long project, teaching students teamwork, business skills and technical ability

About the team This year’s team is building on the experience gained from last years competition. The team consists of a mix of students from many backgrounds and various stages of education with many of the members basing their Final Year Projects on the car. This year we are working to a new structure designed to provide us with a fast start to the season and a solid base from which to increase our performance. With a dedicated core team we are looking to finish within the top 20 at next years competition. UGRacing combines the core disciplines of Electrical, Aeronautical and Mechanical Engineering, with extra support coming from some specialistsenior students.

The team has its own workshop based in the Mechanical Engineering department in the James Watt South Building of the University. We have our own welding bay and are constantly improving our manufacturing capabilities as well as currently working on an in-house designed Dynamometer test rig.

More on the event »» 2,300 students »» 125 teams »» 34 countries The logistics of running such an event would be impossible without the ongoing support from the competition organisers, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. The aim is to challenge students to design and build a single seat racing car in one year before racing at the world famous Silverstone circuit over a weekend in July. The cars are judged on their speed, acceleration, handling and endurance, while the teams are tested on their design, costing and business presentation skills.

“Formula Student is a testing ground for the next generation of world-class engineers.” IMechE

“...Many of the cars showed a standard of engineering that would rival professional racing series..” Jon Hilton Formula Student Chairman Managing Partner of Flybrid Systems

“Formula Student really shows why engineering is such an exciting, dynamic subject to get involved in.” Ross Brawn Formula Student Patron Team Principle of Mercedes GP F1 Team
