Thursday, February 7 – Friday, March 22 Bayou Building, Atrium I, Level 2 Opening Reception: Thursday, February 7, 5-7 p.m. UHCL is pleased to host two solo exhibitions of international photographers Vojtěch Aubrecht and Miro Švolík. Both artists are faculty members at International Art Consortium institutions: Aubrecht is professor of photography at the Institute of Art and Design
at the University of West Bohemia in Plzen, Czech Republic, and Švolík is head of the creative photography studio at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, Slovakia.
Houston – A Geological Dynamic Wedge Thursday, February 21 – Thursday, April 4 Bayou Building, Art Gallery Closing Reception and Lecture with Don Van Nieuwenhuise: Thursday, March 21, 5-7 p.m., Bayou Building, Garden Room This exhibition showcases work produced by students during Professor of Art Nick J. de Vries’s fall sculptural ceramic course that introduced geoscience into the classroom, specifically how Houston is located on a Gulf Coast “clastic wedge,” an area formed by thickly deposited sediments. In conjunction with the exhibition, Don Van Nieuwenhuise, director of the Petroleum Geoscience Program at the University of Houston, will give a lecture during the closing reception.
2013 UHCL Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition Thursday, April 18 – Thursday, May 16 Bayou Building, Art Gallery Opening Reception: Thursday, April 18, 5-7 p.m. This year’s Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition will be juried by UHCL International Art Consortium member institution professors Bedrich Kocman and Jan Kocman (University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, Czech Republic) and Michael Marshall (University of Hawaii at Hilo). Works selected into the exhibition feature a flurry of media including drawings, paintings, ceramics, prints, sculptures, textiles, photographs, and digital media.

From the birth of the comic book superheroine in the 1940s to the blockbusters of today, Wonder Women! looks at how popular representations of powerful women often reflect society’s anxieties about women’s liberation.
The Island President Friday, April 5 The Island President is a little like a non-fiction Mr. Smith Goes to Washington elevated to the world stage. The filmmakers received exclusive access to follow President Nasheed as he prepared over several months for the 2009 Copenhagen Climate Summit in December. The terms of the 1997 Kyoto Treaty on Climate Change were about to expire, and leaders from around the world converged on Copenhagen to hammer out a new treaty with renewed urgency. Go behind the scenes with President Nasheed as he tries to convince world leaders to finally take serious action against looming danger of climate change. The stakes couldn’t be higher for President Nasheed, who has one last chance to save his homeland, and the world.
The Revolutionary Optimists Friday, May 3 The Revolutionary Optimists follows Amlan Gangulyas as he attempts to replicate his work empowering children using street theater, puppetry, and dance. Through his work the children in Calcutta’s slums have cut their neighborhoods’ malaria and diarrhea rates in half, and turned former garbage dumps into playing fields.
