Art Events and Exhibitions Showcasing exhibitions ranging from emerging student artists to established international artists, the UHCL Art Gallery is Bay Area Houston’s premier venue for contemporary visual art. The art gallery is on the first floor of UHCL’s Bayou Building near Atrium I. Hours are Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m., and Friday, 9 a.m. – noon; closed weekends, university holidays, and during exhibition installations. UHCL is honored to be this year’s host for Clear Creek Independent School District’s exhibition of works submitted to the School Art competition for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

Dominic Walsh Dance Theater Performance Wednesday, January 23 6 p.m. Bayou Building, Art Gallery Join us for an evening of contemporary art and dance! Dominic Walsh Dance Theater will present a dance production specially choreographed by Dominic Walsh in response to Geraldine Ondrizek’s artwork on view in the gallery. Vojtěch Aubrecht and Miro Švolík Geraldine Ondrizek – Works from 2008 through 2012 Through Friday, February 1 Bayou Building, Art Gallery Geraldine Ondrizek engages diverse artistic media to portray, explore and enhance images of the genetic testing of human and animal cellular tissue as reproduced by geneticists and biologists.

Thursday, February 7 – Friday, March 22 Bayou Building, Atrium I, Level 2 Opening Reception: Thursday, February 7, 5-7 p.m. UHCL is pleased to host two solo exhibitions of international photographers Vojtěch Aubrecht and Miro Švolík. Both artists are faculty members at International Art Consortium institutions: Aubrecht is professor of photography at the Institute of Art and Design


at the University of West Bohemia in Plzen, Czech Republic, and Švolík is head of the creative photography studio at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, Slovakia.

Houston – A Geological Dynamic Wedge Thursday, February 21 – Thursday, April 4 Bayou Building, Art Gallery Closing Reception and Lecture with Don Van Nieuwenhuise: Thursday, March 21, 5-7 p.m., Bayou Building, Garden Room This exhibition showcases work produced by students during Professor of Art Nick J. de Vries’s fall sculptural ceramic course that introduced geoscience into the classroom, specifically how Houston is located on a Gulf Coast “clastic wedge,” an area formed by thickly deposited sediments. In conjunction with the exhibition, Don Van Nieuwenhuise, director of the Petroleum Geoscience Program at the University of Houston, will give a lecture during the closing reception.

2013 UHCL Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition Thursday, April 18 – Thursday, May 16 Bayou Building, Art Gallery Opening Reception: Thursday, April 18, 5-7 p.m. This year’s Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition will be juried by UHCL International Art Consortium member institution professors Bedrich Kocman and Jan Kocman (University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, Czech Republic) and Michael Marshall (University of Hawaii at Hilo). Works selected into the exhibition feature a flurry of media including drawings, paintings, ceramics, prints, sculptures, textiles, photographs, and digital media.

Clear Lake Association of Senior Programs CLASP is an outreach initiative of UHCL that provides education and intellectual challenge to our community. Schubert’s Death and the Maiden Friday, January 11 Join us to experience some of the cornerstones of chamber music. Originally written for string quartet, Mercury will perform these works arranged for string orchestra.

Mozart’s A Little Night Music Friday, April 19 Join us as we perform arguably the greatest and most well-known of all of Mozart’s works. Experiencing the genius of this music firsthand makes clear the reason for its extraordinary longevity in the musical pantheon.

Beethoven’s 4th and 5th Thursday, May 9 Mercury continues its Beethoven symphony cycle with the underappreciated Symphony No. 4 and the mammoth and iconic Symphony No. 5.

Film & Speaker Series The Film & Speaker Series features films with a discussion on thought-provoking topics that are led by a distinguished speaker. Unique among black leaders, he took the fight directly to the powerful white elite, gaining allies in business and government, including three presidents.

Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines Friday, March 1 Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines traces the fascinating evolution and legacy of Wonder Woman. From the birth of the comic book superheroine in the 1940s to the blockbusters of today, Wonder Women! looks at how popular representations of powerful women often reflect society’s anxieties about women’s liberation.


The Island President Friday, April 5 The Island President is a little like a non-fiction Mr. Smith Goes to Washington elevated to the world stage. The filmmakers received exclusive access to follow President Nasheed as he prepared over several months for the 2009 Copenhagen Climate Summit in December. The terms of the 1997 Kyoto Treaty on Climate Change were about to expire, and leaders from around the world converged on Copenhagen to hammer out a new treaty with renewed urgency. Go behind the scenes with President Nasheed as he tries to convince world leaders to finally take serious action against looming danger of climate change. The stakes couldn’t be higher for President Nasheed, who has one last chance to save his homeland, and the world.

The Revolutionary Optimists Friday, May 3 The Revolutionary Optimists follows Amlan Gangulyas as he attempts to replicate his work empowering children using street theater, puppetry, and dance. Through his work the children in Calcutta’s slums have cut their neighborhoods’ malaria and diarrhea rates in half, and turned former garbage dumps into playing fields.

CADD Autism Speaker Series In their efforts to assist more local families, caregivers and teachers of autistic children, UHCL’s Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities is hosting a speaker series. The informative lectures, which are sponsored by Hegwood & Associates, P.C., JSC Federal Credit Union and Spectrum of Hope/Basis are provided by the center at no cost. Lectures are held from 10:30 a.m. to noon in the Student Services and Classroom Building’s Lecture Hall. A question and answer session and a complimentary luncheon follow each lecture.
