The mural adorning Blackshear Elementary School illustrates the spirit of the historic Third Ward neighborhood shared with the University of Houston. In the photo, Meghan Galvan, who completed her student-teaching residency at Blackshear in 2018, catches up with two of her fifth-graders, siblings La’Darien and Ariona Freeman. Mural artist Anat Ronen appears in the piece with a paintbrush behind her ear.

leading transformation Our mission extends beyond success in the classroom. At the University of Houston College of Education, we are committed to serving the community. To that end, we’re working to improve educational and health outcomes for all children and families through our teaching, research and partnerships. We must end the inequities that afflict our poorest neighborhoods and our most vulnerable populations. Our faculty and staff are united around five key beliefs, developed through an ongoing strategic-planning process: • Our responsibility is to improve lives. • Achieving equity requires inspiring collective action. • Greater understanding depends on rigorous scientific inquiry. • Diverse perspectives and talents fuel excellence. • Transformation requires challenging and valuing ourselves and others. These tenets drive us as we prepare future teachers, administrators, counselors, psychologists, health educators, researchers and other leaders in their fields. As UH has ascended to Tier One status, the College of Education also has transformed. We’ve increased the rigor and relevance of our instruction and scholarship. We’ve grown research expenditures by nearly 50 percent over the last five years. And we were honored to win the 2018 Distinguished Teacher Education Program Award from the Association of Teacher Educators. In our relentless pursuit of progress, I’m confident our faculty, staff, students and alumni will continue to transform lives for generations.

ON THE RISE As part of a Carnegie-designated Tier One public research institution, the UH College of Education has drawn national recognition as we embrace continuous improvement.

PROGRAMS THAT PREPARE LEADERS Our students learn within a multicultural city from distinguished professors who merge research with real-world lessons. Programs fall into three departments: Curriculum & Instruction (CUIN), Educational Leadership & Policy Studies (ELPS), and Psychological, Health & Learning Sciences (PHLS). We’re connected by our goal to advance equity. UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS Our award-winning TEACHING & LEARNING program gives students invaluable classroom experience before graduation – including a yearlong residency at a local school. Nearly all our graduates pass the state certification exam, and alumni regularly win teacher-of-the-year awards. Our major is for teaching early childhood through eighth grade. To teach high school, students should major in the subject area and minor in education. (CUIN) Graduates of our HEALTH program are well prepared for “helping” careers, in areas such as employee wellness, patient education and environmental health. Internships provide real-world experience, and students are primed to take the Certified Health Education Specialist exam and pursue graduate school. Students also can earn a B.S. and a master’s in public health in as few as five years through a partnership with The University of Texas School of Public Health. (PHLS) Students with a passion for understanding people will find a good fit in HUMAN DEVELOPMENT & FAMILY STUDIES. Engaging coursework addresses contemporary families, parent education and early childhood education, while students also learn through internships and practicums. Graduates may work as day care directors, teachers and nonprofit managers or attend graduate school in areas such as social work, psychology and education. (PHLS) Our ASIAN AMERICAN STUDIES minor equips students to work in today’s global economy, with courses covering history, culture, the arts and cross-cultural understanding. Our SPECIAL POPULATIONS minor prepares students to support individuals with challenges or disabilities across the lifespan. (ELPS)

GRADUATE PROGRAMS Our CURRICULUM & INSTRUCTION programs deepen students’ research and leadership skills and content and instructional knowledge. Students graduate ready for administrative or faculty roles in school districts, universities or other organizations. The M.Ed. and Ph.D. programs offer various education specialties: art; early childhood; learning, design and technology; literacy; math; science; social studies; and teaching. We also offer M.Ed. specialties in elementary education, health science – ideal for medical professionals – and STEM. (CUIN) Our COUNSELING M.Ed. program offers clinical mental health and school counseling tracks. All students gain field experience, graduating well prepared to work with diverse populations and to pursue licensure or certification. (PHLS) Our COUNSELING PSYCHOLOGY and SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGY Ph.D. programs, both accredited by the American Psychological Association, intertwine science and practice with a social justice focus. Our internship match with sites is regularly 100 percent. Counseling psychology students can specialize in the growing field of health psychology. (PHLS) We’re building a network of transformative school leaders through our M.Ed. in ADMINISTRATION & SUPERVISION program for future principals and our Ed.D. in PROFESSIONAL LEADERSHIP - K-12 program for aspiring superintendents (ELPS). Students learn from faculty who have been in the trenches and through in-school internships. Other Professional Leadership Ed.D. specialties include health science, literacy, math, social studies (CUIN) and special populations (ELPS). Our HIGHER EDUCATION M.Ed. and Ph.D. programs prepare students to be change agents as college or university administrators and scholars. Our faculty includes current and former university executives, and students gain professional experience through internships and graduate assistantships. We are committed to solving critical issues related to college access, equity, affordability, student learning and degree completion. (ELPS) Graduates of our SPECIAL POPULATIONS M.Ed. program are well prepared for rewarding careers in this high-need field. Students in the M.Ed. program select a specialty in special education, special education leadership, educational diagnostician or gifted and talented. We also offer an Ed.D. in PROFESSIONAL LEADERSHIP with a special populations emphasis, preparing graduates to meet the needs of all students as instructional leaders. (ELPS) Our MEASUREMENT, QUANTITATIVE METHODS & LEARNING SCIENCES Ph.D. program equips students to design, conduct and use research to help solve significant societal challenges and to improve learning outcomes.

LEARN ONLINE We offer several online graduate programs to help professionals advance their careers while maintaining a flexible schedule. Students benefit from the same high-quality instruction as we provide face-to-face; they graduate with the same research skills and practical knowledge to help diverse learners thrive. U.S. News & World Report has ranked our online program in the top 5 nationwide for the last five years.

We’re transforming learning for tomorrow’s leaders. A team from our learning, design and technology program won the 2017 Online Learning Network Award from the International Society for Technology in Education for a gamification project used in a graduate course.

Houston is the most ethnically diverse major metropolitan area in the nation – home to the world’s largest medical center, mission operations for the International Space Station, more than 50 public school districts and the most Fortune 500 companies outside of New York. Entertainment and cultural options abound: museums, music, theater, major league and college sports, bike trails and a potpourri of cuisines. One in four Houstonians is foreign born. The city, like the University of Houston, attracts the driven.

REAL-WORLD LEARNING We at the College of Education believe in the power of service learning, giving students real-world experiences while also helping communities in need. Through internships, practicums or field work, students serve as teachers, principals, counselors, psychologists and health educators in training under the guidance of experienced mentors. Our graduates leave well prepared and committed to serving others. Alumna Andrea Cruz (pictured) is a prime example. She completed her student-teaching residency at Pilgrim Academy, a west Houston campus where most of the students are low income, and now teaches math there full time. The first in her family to graduate from college, she decorated her classroom door with UH regalia and this message to her middle schoolers: “See yourself here.

The Advancing Community Engagement & Service Institute focuses on real-world learning and community improvement. The UH Education Research Center analyzes student and workforce data to inform public policy. The HEALTH Research Institute pairs innovative science and partnerships to promote wellness.

Our students also gain meaningful research experience, working in labs, authoring articles and presenting at conferences. As one example, counseling psychology doctoral student Krystal Christopher (pictured at right) works with Associate Dean for Research Ezemenari Obasi, who studies stress, drug use vulnerability and health disparities. “What drives me to do research? Finding solutions to problems,” Christopher said. “It’s a unique opportunity to be at the University of Houston.”

We’re leveraging science to make an impact.

It’s important for our community to grasp the significance of the College of Education to the entire Houston workforce.
