Priority 1: SCHOLARSHIPS

INSPIRING STUDENTS FOR

BOUNDLESS SUCCESS

” Don’t let anything interfere with your education or compromise your future. Our country, state and Houston need you—educated, committed, focused and willing to sacrifice for others. We will do everything to ensure that you will succeed and graduate from UHD. When you succeed, UHD succeeds.

Dr. Juan Sánchez Muñoz President, University of Houston-Downtown

For UHD alumna Rebecca Barbosa, the future is bright. Thanks to the Harry & Antje Gee Red Rose Endowed Scholarship, recipients like Rebecca—who are selected on the basis of academic achievements, leadership ability and the potential for contributing to the future of Houston—are empowered to see their dreams realized. “When you receive a scholarship, you have a responsibility to perform at the highest level and to stay passionate and committed to achieving your goals.”

A college degree is a game-changer that transforms the future of a UHD student. But for many promising students, financial need is often times a factor that deters them from seeing their dreams realized. While 70 percent of all full-time UHD students qualify for financial aid, a gap remains between the cost of tuition, fees and student resources. Join us to close the gap through scholarships that award merit and need. UHD’s commitment does not end once students enroll. We know that it is essential to help students maintain momentum toward earning a degree. That’s why the University offers wrap-around success coaching, advising, career mentoring, co-curricular activities and career exploration to remove roadblocks to student success and create positive pathways. Together, we have the power to change the trajectory of a student’s future and open new possibilities for their family’s future.

In 2014, Rebecca graduated with a degree in chemistry and is now enrolled in the MBA program at UHD.

Be On Time Scholarship Rewards continuing students who maintain a solid GPA and stay on a four-year graduation track.

Gator Scholarship Helps to recruit freshmen and transfer students with academic promise and financial need.

Priority 2: COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

SERVING TO MAKE A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE

Building a Bridge to Recovery It’s just what Gators do.

Experiential education is a cornerstone of the Gator educational experience. One facet of experiential learning is the collaborative relationships UHD shares with community agencies throughout Houston. These partnerships offer students the opportunity to develop practical solutions to the city’s pressing issues. Students learn to stretch their minds and go beyond the ‘know-how’ by critically thinking about the world in which they live. UHD’s Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning creates a more community-minded University that prepares, educates and engages students by building bridges with local and regional nonprofit organizations, government agencies, businesses and individuals. It’s a win-win for our students and our city. Through your support of community engagement, we can enrich curriculum, teaching and learning that enhances a student’s academic success, cultivates social responsibility and contributes to the public good.

Extending guidance, discipline, instruction and compassion was the formula for 27 UHD students in the College of Public Service. As part of a Criminal Justice Senior Seminar class, students counseled and helped individuals transition back into society following incarceration. Through lengthy and extensive training, students worked with nonprofit organizations— Angela House (residential women’s facility); WorkFaith Connections (disadvantaged job seekers); and Unlimited Visions Aftercare, Inc. (adult substance abuse program)—to help rebuild the futures of fellow Houstonians while gaining an education beyond the classroom.

”It’s a blessing to help others. Knowing that you can provide an answer or help someone move to a new chapter in their life is very rewarding.” ” Karla Caballo UHD Student

Priority 3: FACULTY & FACILITIES

BUILDING A UNIVERSITY FROM THE INSIDE OUT

Our city’s workforce is always evolving. And, so should our University. Committed to the success of our students, we recognize that scholarships, community engagement and state-of-the-art facilities will advance our students’ tenacious spirit to earn a degree and nurture their contributions to our city and region. Within our walls, a diverse and dedicated faculty and staff prepare students for tomorrow’s career opportunities and professions that we can only dream of today. Houston knows the value of a UHD degree. Our graduates are industry-ready professionals with sights set on dominating our city’s dynamic workforce. Along the banks of White Oak Bayou, the new $73 million College of Sciences and Technology Building is the next step in expanding our campus footprint. The facility will house research space to support chemistry and biological sciences with innovative classrooms, huddle rooms and the Center for Urban Agriculture and Sustainability. Additionally, a new central plant will provide the infrastructure for future development as UHD continues to serve a growing student body. Your support contributes to the next-generation of UHD graduates who are changing our world. Just think of all the possibilities.
