Haydn: Symphony No. 73 In D ‘La Chasse’ Haydn’s Symphony No. 73 was written in 1782, the year which also saw the creation of Mozart’s ‘Haffner’ Symphony and around the time when Haydn’s star was beginning to rise in London. In fact, the English were attempting to persuade him to travel there, but for the time being Haydn declined, feeling a strong loyalty to his patron, Prince Nikolaus. Nikolaus had particularly loved Haydn’s opera La fedeltà premiata, and upon the former’s return from a trip to Paris he was greeted with this symphony, which as a sort of subtle homage incorporates as its final movement the original overture to that opera. The preceding slow movement also reworks material, this time from Haydn’s lied ‘Gegenliebe,’ a love song whose text expresses a keen wish for returned affections. The symphony’s subtitle derives from the finale, which are reminiscent of the widely-recognized hunting-horn motif.

Mozart: Symphony No. 39 In E-Flat Mozart’s final three symphonies, all written in 1788, are arguably the first of their time to, by their ambitious nature, challenge the supremacy of Haydn as Europe’s master symphonist. The first of these, the 39th, finds Mozart continuing to explore the clarinet as an integral member of the orchestra, with the result of a warmer orchestral timbre. The first and last movements establish the scale as an important structural element, and the third movement seems at times to presage Schubert’s later dance pieces.

Of particular interest to some musicologists is the finale’s lack of a coda, with Mozart opting instead to push the momentum to the very last notes rather than offering any sort of deceleration. This creative choice led conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt to argue for the symphony’s place as the first entry in a three-part symphonic cycle, with the “Jupiter” Symphony serving as the grand finale.

Franz Anton Krager, Artistic Director Since making his prize-winning European conducting debut in Copenhagen’s Tivoli Koncertsalen in 1978, Franz Anton Krager has led orchestras in Washington DC’s Kennedy Center, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, Moscow’s State Kremlin Palace, Manchester England’s Bridgewater Hall, Birmingham England’s Adrian Boult Hall, Guangzhou China’s Xinghai Music Center, the Sydney Opera House, The Hague’s Congresgebouw, Zagreb’s Lisinski Concert Hall, Kazan’s State Philharmonic Hall in Russia, Guadalajara’s Degollado Theater, and Sarasota’s Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. His affiliations with leading music festivals include the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, Lancaster International Concert Series and the Lichfield and Aberystwyth International Arts Festivals in the U.K., and the Interlochen National Music Camp in the U.S. Maestro Krager has led the Houston, Russian State, Traverse City Michigan and Florida West Coast symphonies, Romanian and Kazan State philharmonics; symphony orchestras in Washington, Berlin, London, Chicago, Paris, Singapore, Leipzig, Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Monterrey, Grosseto, Pordenone, Ingolstadt, Chichester, Neuss, and Honolulu, and was Principal Guest Conductor in Stratford, England from 2000-2004. In 2015, he was appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the North Shore Chamber Arts Ensemble in Chicago. Krager is Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Texas Music Festival, and Founding Artistic Director of the Virtuosi of Houston. Krager is also the Hourani Endowed Professor of Music, Director of Orchestras, and Chair of the Conducting Department at the University of Houston Moores School of Music, where he has brought the orchestra and orchestral conducting program into national prominence. An active recording artist, Krager has released recordings of the music of Thomas Fortmann, Percy Grainger, Michael Horvit, Peter Lieuwen, Robert Nelson and Stephen Shewan on labels including Divine Art (Métier), Albany, MSR Classics, Newport and HDTT.

The Moores School Symphony Orchestra The Moores School Symphony Orchestra (MSSO), with over one hundred members, is conducted by University of Houston Director of Orchestras, Franz Anton Krager. As a major ensemble in the School of Music, the MSSO performs as a musical partner with many of the MSM’s departments and studios. The MSSO has been hailed by international artists and critics alike, as a student ensemble of professional quality and versatility. The MSSO appears regularly with world-class performing artists, and has been featured at several Texas Music Educators Association conventions, as well as at The Midwest Clinic in Chicago. The MSSO collaborates on a regular basis with the Moores Opera Center, Moores School Choruses, and the Houston Ballet’s Ben Stevenson Academy. It is a leading ensemble in the area of new music as well as being an important repository for the standard literature. The MSSO can be heard on compact disc on the Divine Art (Métier), Albany, Newport, and “Surround-Sound Blu-Ray Audio” HDTT record labels.
