Alec Warren Alec Warren is an instructional assistant professor of percussion at the University of Houston Moores School of Music, where he teaches applied lessons, percussion methods and conducts the Percussion Ensemble II. He regularly performs as a freelance artist throughout the Houston area where you can hear him with the Houston Ballet, Theatre Under The Stars (TUTS), Bayou City Musicals, The Houston Choral Society, HITS Theatre, the Gilbert and Sullivan Society, Cantare Houston, the Michele Brangwen Dance Ensemble, the United Nations Chorus, the Synergy Brass Ensemble and Broadway Across America, among many others. While living in Toronto, he had the opportunity to study tabla with Pandit Sharda Shahi and Bob Becker. Warren received his Bachelor of Music from Sam Houston State University, where he studied percussion with Rod Cannon and Ray Dillard. He received his master’s in music performance from the University of North Texas, where he studied under Robert Schietroma, Ed Soph and Leigh Stevens. As an educator, Warren has had the pleasure of teaching on the faculty of Sam Houston State University, Lone Star College and San Jacinto Junior College, as well as teaching at Spring High School, Westfield High School and Friendswood High School. Warren is an active clinician presenting clinics, conducting percussion ensembles and presiding as a judge on many concerto competitions. He has been on faculty with the American Festival of the Arts since 2002. He has an endorsement with Innovative Percussion and is a member of Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) and Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA). Warren is married to his wife Robynne of 23 years. He enjoys watching his two sons, Aiden and Tristan, play baseball and golf.
Blake Wilkins Blake Wilkins is Professor of Music and Director of Percussion Studies at the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music, and in 2016-17 he served as Interim Director of the Moores School of Music. Prior to joining the UH faculty in 1997, he served as percussionist and substitute principal timpanist with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic from 1993-97. A strong advocate for the performance of new music, he performs regularly with the Houston-based new music ensemble Musiqa. He also co-founded two experimental improvisation ensembles—El Dos with bassist Michael Lee; and The Moment Trio with Lee and pianist/violist Christian Asplund, releasing their first compact disc, Constructions One, in fall 2005. Under his direction the Moores School Percussion Ensemble has distinguished itself internationally by winning the Percussive Arts Society International Percussion Ensemble Competition three times (2003, 2006, and 2010); with the release of three critically acclaimed commercial compact discs on the Albany Records label; and through its Percussion Ensemble Commissioning Project, which to date has generated sixteen new works for large percussion ensemble. He is equally active as a composer, and his four works for large percussion ensemble have been recorded by the University of Oklahoma and University of Houston Percussion Ensembles on the Albany Records label. His Twilight Offering Music was a prizewinner in the 1988 Percussive Arts Society International Composition Competition. Dr. Wilkins holds degrees in Percussion Performance and Composition from the University of Oklahoma and the University of Southern California. He is an artist endorser of Innovative Percussion and Zildjian cymbals.

About the Ensemble
About the Ensemble
Moores School Percussion Ensemble The Moores School Percussion Ensemble serves as the cornerstone of the Department of Percussion Studies at the University of Houston. Established by Blake Wilkins in 1997, the ensemble’s selection as a winner in the 2003, 2006 and 2010 Percussive Arts Society Percussion Ensemble Competitions and its appearance at the Percussive Arts Society International Conventions established its reputation internationally as a leader in percussion performance. The ensemble has also emerged as a leader in the promotion and performance of new music. Since 1997, the ensemble has given the world and U.S. premieres of numerous new works. Additionally, in fall 2002, the Moores School Percussion Ensemble initiated a New Works Project to encourage new compositions for large percussion ensemble. To date, the project has resulted in sixteen new works for large percussion ensemble by such composers as Donald Grantham, Pierre Jalbert, David Crumb, David Heuser, and UH faculty composers Rob Smith and Marcus Maroney. The ensemble has also recorded three critically acclaimed commercial CDs on the Albany Records Label. Surge was released in early 2006, Not Here But There followed in 2009, and Everywhere Entangled was released in 2011. Our program currently offers two concert percussion ensembles—MSPE I is directed by Blake Wilkins and MSPE II by Professor Alec Warren—and includes The PANtagonists Steel Drum Band. We invite you to follow the Moores School Department of Percussion Studies on Facebook and on instagram@uhpercussion.
