II. One of the constants of the human condition is knowing that we will die. And the constant that arises from that fact is wondering what happens after we die. We offer two compositions that consider life after death. First, we hope you will enjoy an arrangement of Eric Clapton’s “Tears in Heaven.” This piece was written in 1991 after Clapton’s four-year old son died from a fall out of the 53rd floor window of a New York apartment. Would you know my name if I saw in Heaven? Will you be the same if I saw you in Heaven?

I must be strong and carry on ’Cause I know I don’t belong here in Heaven. Would you hold my hand if I saw you in Heaven?

Would you help me stand if I saw you in Heaven? I’ll find my way through night and day.

’Cause I know I just can’t stay here in Heaven. Time can bring you down. Time can bend your knees. Time can break your heart, have you begging please. Begging please. Beyond the dark there’s peace I’m sure. And I know there’ll be no more tears in Heaven.

PROGRAM

I. Today’s concert will open with Appalchia Waltz by American fiddle player and composer, Mark O’Con nor. O’Connor is a four-time National Old-time Fiddler Champion, a three-time Grand Master Fiddler Champion, a two-time national guitar flatpick champion, and world mandolin champion, all while in his teens. In addition to Appalachia Waltz, which was the result of a collaboration with Yo-Yo Ma, O’Connor composed The Olympic Reel for the closing ceremonies of the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.

III. E¯riks Ešenvalds used an ancient liturgical text for In paradisum, for his own 2012 setting on the same topic. These words are sung during a Requiem Mass as the body of the deceased is taken from the church for burial. Written for solo cello, viola, and choir, Ešenvalds states that the strings’ “fluttering tremolandos represent the gently-beating wings of angels who lead us into paradise.” Choral composer, Gabriel Jackson, further writes that “…the strings sing a series of exquisite descants that eventually achieve an “eternal rest” as their star-like harmonics fade into eternity.” May the angels lead you into paradise. May the martyrs receive you at your arrival and lead you to the holy city, Jerusalem. May choir of angels receive you and with Lazarus, once a poor man, may you have eternal rest. We hope you enjoy today’s concert! Our next two “Cookie Concerts” are described below. This might be a great time to reserve your ticket!
