Ted Wenglinski**, piano *This work was commissioned by Dr. Witt and this is the premiere performance of the piece. **Guest performer Program Notes for “Song, Interlude, and Dance” Song, Interlude, and Dance was composed in December 2020 and January 2021 for saxophonist Woody Witt. As the title suggests, this piece is divided into three sections that move from one to the next without pause. A plaintive introduction leads into a lyrical song centered

around the key of d minor. At the end of the song, an interlude vamp allows the soloist ample room to improvise. This improvised section moves into an up-tempo dance in compound meter in g minor which, after a brief fughetta, allows more improvisational space before an energetic recapitulation and conclusion. This work is intended for the saxophonist who is well-versed in both classical and jazz styles. Approximately 80% of the piece is notated and the remaining 20% is improvised. Truly a work for the modern saxophone soloist.
