LIBR A RY CLOSUR E: P OP- UP LIBR A RY OP EN
After months of hard work we are extremely proud to be able to welcome you all into the new Pop-up Library! You can find the pop-up Library on: Level 1, CBD Towers, 84-90 Main Street, Upper Hutt The Pop-up Library is open seven days a week, and we've filled it to the brim with all of our newest and most popular material for you to browse and issue from all of our significant collections, as well as new chromebooks for our public computer service (see page 4), newspapers, WiFi, and cosy places to sit and study or relax. We can't wait to see you make use of our lovely new space!

Level 1, CBD Towers Monday and Thursday, 9.30am–7pm Tuesday and Wednesday, 9.30am– 6.30pm Friday, 9.30am– 5.30pm Saturday and Sunday, 10am– 4pm
P O P - U P AC C E S S The Pop-up Library is accessible via the ground floor entrance lift, with room for mobility scooters. We ask that you leave your bicycles securely locked outside the CBD Towers. The stairs are not accessible because we share the building with a diverse range of groups and businesses. The stairwell will unlock in the event of an emergency.
HO L D S While we were working on establishing a seven day service in the city center we made all holds free to ensure access to all of our material. With the opening of the Pop-up Library, holds (also known as requests) for material that you can access at one of our branches is no longer free of charge. However, we remain committed to providing free access to the entirety of our collection, so holds on items remaining in the Central Library building remain free. How do I know which items have a free hold available?
Good question! When placing your hold, check if the status of the item is 'Offsite', as shown above. If it does, your wallet is safe! As always, speak to a friendly librarian if you are unsure or would like assistance.
R E T U R NS Our 24 -hour returns box will remain open for use behind the Central Library, with a stylish new winter coat to match the Pop-up Library!

N E W P U BL I C C O M P U T E R S : C H R O M E BOO K S With the opening of the Pop-up Library we were able to move forward the upgrade of our public computers and computer space. We are now the second library in New Zealand to be able to roll out shiny new APNK (Aotearoa People's Network Kaharoa) Chromebooks, as well as new printing and scanning facilities! These laptops can be issued from the front desk in the Pop-up Library using your Library card or a valid ID. You are free to take them anywhere in the Library to use! Hopefully this will create a more relaxed and productive environment for our users, rather than being limited to working in a computer hub. The time limit system still applies in the same way it previously did, and you are still welcome to ask for your time to be extended if nobody is waiting. Note that the Chromebooks won't work when taken outside the Library - even if formatted. The Chromebooks also represent a larger shift in computing that is currently taking place. Being primarily cloud-based they are in some ways more similar to using your tablet or phone than using a traditional desktop PC. For instance, instead of using traditional Microsoft Office/ Word, Chromebook users can use web/cloud based apps to edit documents. You can still save the documents to the desktop or a USB, but they can also be saved online (for instance to a Google or Microsoft account), accessible by you from anywhere with an internet connection. Local files automatically being erased on our public computers has always been a security necessity, but also a major cause of lost work for users who forget to save their work to USB. The use of cloud-based apps removes this reliance on physical media. As the future of computing is cloudbased we are committing to keeping Upper Hutt residents and job seekers ahead of the curve.

H E R I TAGE C O L L EC T I O NS The Heritage Team is always thrilled when people use images from our archival collections for their publications. A recent example is this CD box set of New Zealand music from the 1960s, How is the Air Up There? Its accompanying booklet and cover art makes prominent use (with permission!) of several photographs from our Revelle Jackson collection. A copy of the album (which also features music from Upper Hutt band The Bitter End) will be available for loan from the Library later this month.
