M I R AN DA L i b r ar i an - A dult S er v ic es

I enjoy reading eBooks because I can enlarge the font so that I can read without straining my eyes, I can have a number of books on one small device and as I also love listening to audiobooks - I can download and listen to them on my phone. The following are some of my favourites from our Overdrive (ePukapuka) database. Sweet Masterpiece by Connie Shelton Samantha Sweet’s ambition is to open a sweet store; but to earn enough money to do this she breaks into houses that have been foreclosed on and gets them ready for sale. Whilst doing this job she is given a strange box that has supernatural qualities which, amongst other things, helps her solve mysteries.

Over Sea Under Stone by Susan Cooper This audiobook is the first in the series “The dark is rising”, a favourite series from my childhood. Good versus evil throughout the ages all connected up to Arthurian legend. The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin Also written for children - but I read it as an adult and fell in love with it. A group of strangers are invited to play a game to inherit Samuel Westing’s vast fortune. Who will win the Westing game? For instructions on how to access Overdrive – look under digital collections on our website, grab a pamphlet, or ask a librarian. W W W.U P P E R H U T T L I B R A R Y.C O. N Z

JAY M E & LO U I SA Scribbles & Scribes Programme Calling all kids aged 8 -12! Have you heard about the libraries amazing Scribbles & Scribes programme? Scribbles & Scribes is a for tnightly librar y programme for children who are interested in illustrating and writing their own stories. At the sessions, we share ideas, write and illustrate amazing creative stories. Our goal for Scribbles & Scribes is to work together, be friendly and suppor tive, be ar tistic and over all be creative and use our imagination.

Our favourite ac tivit y that we do at ever y session is a round robin writing game. One person star ts the stor y off with a sentence and the next person adds a sentence to the first and we continue to go around the table... this ends up with some extremely funny and wack y shor t stories! Jayme and I are keen to share our love of stor y creation, world building, illustrating and character creation with you. Come and join us at the Scribbles and Scribes programme and write or illustrate your own stor y! Meet us in the children’s area, two Thursdays of the month at 3.30 - 4.30pm. Our next sessions are: Thurs 8 & Thurs 22 Aug. See more dates: upperhut tlibrar y.co.nz/Events
