For this to occur you need to be ensuring that all the hard work and effort is being channelled in the right direction – physical preparation (training), nutrition, technical, tactical, psychological, etc. and that you are receiving the correct guidance and information on how to implement this.

However for all groups/ organisations it is beneficial to sit down and ask questions around what you as a group/organisation are doing and how does this relate to the groups/organisations purpose? Are our actions/ programmes/services achieving what we set out to do? Get the word out on your community events! Eventfinder has become a popular online platform for groups and businesses to list their upcoming events on. We encourage all Upper Hutt event organisers to list their events, big or small on Eventfinder. This is free, and simple to do online, and provides a central event hub for those organising or attending events. Groups from the Cossie Club to the Upper Hutt City Library list their events on there as it’s an easy site for the public to search what is happening across Upper Hutt. 4

Go to: www.eventfinder.co.nz to sign up for free. The Upper Hutt Leader runs a weekly “What’s on” listing and the public can send information to: editor@uhleader.co.nz More information on organising and promoting an event is available on the Upper Hutt City Council website: www.upperhuttcity.com/local-events

Vibe has moved from our community house at Sinclair Street in Upper Hutt to a large ground floor space at the former Ag Research site in Ward Street, Upper Hutt. Vibe acknowledges Gillies Group for their outstanding support and sharing our vision for a new look service for Upper Hutt young people. COMMUNITY GROUP PROFILE!

Upper Hutt Community Youth Trust

New Section!

Upper Hutt Community Youth Trust is a new trust in Upper Hutt that won the Child and Youth Development Category at the recent Wellington Airport Community Awards in Upper Hutt. Our Trust seeks to realise hope for a better future for the young people of Upper Hutt. We do this by connecting and journeying with young people through creating healthy spaces and experiences that enable them to discover their worth, see new possibilities for their future, and contribute positively to our community. Paul Thompson our director has been a youth worker in Upper Hutt for the past 14 years, and along with his wife they also run the Lighthouse Girls Home. We are involved in a number of youth initiatives in our local community. The Timberlea and Trentham Youth Programmes are two of our programmes which impact around 50 young people every Wednesday night during the school term. We also run Collision Youth Centre - a youth hangout space for young people in Upper Hutt, with pool tables, basketball, table tennis etc., open on a Friday afternoon from 3pm till 6pm at the rear of the Upper Hutt RAMS Rugby Clubrooms in Railway Ave. We also have mentoring and small group offerings for young people around different activities and interests. The Trust also owns a 37 seater bus which we make available to community groups for discounted rates, so make sure you keep us in mind for your next social outing, or event. For any further info on what we do feel free to contact Paul on paul@uhcyt.org.nz or 04 974 8275, or check out our websites: www.uhcyt.org.nz or www.collisionyc.co.nz

Creative show for kids explores the big questions

Tickets: Early Bird $35, General Admission $39, child $18 (excl fees) from Ticket Direct

‘Some of the most brilliantly imaginative, humorous, touching theatre I have seen this year.’ – The Times Part theatre, part dance, Chalk About is fifty minutes of family-friendly fun (for kids aged eight and older) played out on a giant chalkboard stage. Armed only with their wits and a few pieces of chalk, Chalk About performers Christine Devaney and Niels Weijer take an old playground game and turn it into a playful, funny and often moving look at how we fill in the outlines of each other’s identities. Join Christine and Niels on their journey as they ask some of life’s big questions: What makes us who we are? Is it where we are from? Or how we talk? Is it the way we dance? Our pasts, our futures...? When: Wed 9 March, 7pm

Duration: 50mins Recommended for ages 8+ Chalk About is partnered by Stuff with support from Creative Scotland. New Zealand Festival ‘On the Road’ is partnered by NZ Community Trust and Upper Hutt City Council. About the New Zealand Festival The New Zealand Festival is the longest running and largest multi-arts festival in New Zealand. We celebrate the world’s top international artists and nurture and present work from some of Aotearoa’s best artists and producers. In 2016 we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Festival and welcome audiences from New Zealand and Australia and artists from all over the world to Wellington from 26 February – 20 March 2016. IHC in your community Take a moment to connect with someone with an intellectual disability and do what you want to do, when you want to do it, with a new friend. IHC’s volunteer program is all about one to one friendships! We found that people with intellectual disabilities spend the majority of their time with family members or paid staff and they don’t have the same chances to make friends as everyone else. You can make a difference in the life of someone by taking the time to get to know them and supporting them to achieve goals in their life. It’s not hard! You decide what you want 16

As part of our fund raising we run No Lights No Lycra, which is not about technique and being a good dancer, it’s about the experience of dancing. It’s a time to dance independently in the company of others. It is a place to shake out the stresses of your week. It is inclusive; everyone is welcome and most of all its fun! This is an alcohol and drug free environment. You don’t need to dress up, spend money or have a partner. All you need is the genuine love of dancing. We dance in a darkish room so you don’t need to feel shy. No Lights No Lycra will be back on 9th February 2016, fortnightly at the Hapai Club Rooms, Fergusson Drive.
