5,000 Poppies Upper Hutt City Library has partnered with Trentham Military Camp to support the ‘5000 Poppies - A Community Tribute of Respect and Rememberance’ project. This project involves hand-making (crocheted/knitted/felted/sewn) poppies which are collected for an international rememberance display. The Library is the poppy collection point for Upper Hutt. We have patterns available to help you knit or crochet your poppies. Alternatively, you can find patterns and more information about this project online at: www.5000poppies.wordpress.com You are more than welcome to include a dedication on the back of your poppy if you wish. Keep an eye out for a special Poppy Workshop at our ‘Knit & Knatter’ session on March 27.
Brainwave Early Years Presentation One day every child in New Zealand will get the best start in life because parents and the whole community understand and value the impact early experiences have on brain development, and ultimately on the healthy development of society. The Brainwave Trust is a national not-for-profit organisation. Their aim is to raise public awareness of the amazing new findings in brain research, which emphasise the importance of early experiences on infant brain development; and to educate about the important implications of this knowledge. Wednesday 12 March, 7.00- 9.00pm at Upper Hutt City Library. For more information, email bookings@brainwave.org.nz
Science museum in a pizza box?! Keep an eye out in the Library for information on a very unique event coming in the next few weeks!
From March 3 you will be able to opt-in for text notifications of Holds and Pre-Due Reminder notices - handy for those of us on the go. Sign up on the library catalogue under “My Account” or see a staff member in the library. 2
Brainwave Trust is a not-for-profit organisation that delivers easy to understand presentations to parents, professionals and the wider community using the latest scientific research on brain development.
The First Three Years Last Forever Safety, consistency and nurturing in the first three years can result in a lifetime of fulfillment. Neglect and abuse during these first early years can result in a lifetime of lost potential.
THIS INFORMATION IS RELEVANT TO EACH AND EVERY ONE OF US Brainwave has professionally trained presenters available to give presentations on early brain development.

Did you know? • The way you speak, handle and respond to a baby shapes the baby’s brain? • Prolonged early stress disrupts brain architecture and increases the risk of emotional and behavioural disorders? • Nurturing and responsiveness in the early years builds a strong foundation for learning, behaviour and relationships? “We are the first generation to have this knowledge at our finger tips. We ignore it at our peril !” Dr Simon Rowley, Paediatrician

Nikki’s PE class has to ice-skate for a charity of their choice. The grand prize is $10,000! Chloe, Zoey and Nikki choose to wear clown costumes for their dance, and their charity is Fuzzy Friends (the animal adoption centre) because one of the owners Phil has gone into hospital for a broken leg and Betty is left on her own to try and find homes for every cat and dog. After the contest Nikki is so happy because Brandon gives her a bouquet of flowers! You’ll have to read this book to find out what happens at the contest, and who takes the grand prize!

Benge & Pratt Fire Centenary Commemorations March 29 will mark the 100th anniversary of Upper Hutt’s greatest tragedy in terms of loss of life. Late on a Saturday evening in 1914, signs of a fire were spotted in Benge & Pratt’s store on Main Street. Under the direction of local constable Denis Mahoney, townsfolk rallied around to retrieve stock and protect surrounding buildings from the spreading flames. Just after midnight, an enormous explosion occurred which was later found to be caused by gelignite illegally stored on the premises. Eight men, including Constable Mahoney and local Postmaster James Comeskey, died as a result of the blast with many more injured. This disaster had a profound impact on the tight-knit Upper Hutt community. OPEN HOURS
