approved to serve as a memorial marking New Zealand’s centenary and was inscribed with the words: “1840 – 1940 Centennial”.

Do you remember the Upper Hutt Town Clock? One of many interesting topics of discussion to come up during the Heritage Collections’ recent and very successful “Memories of Main Street” display in The Mall was the Upper Hutt Town Clock. For many years this hung from the side of the Bank of Australasia building (subsequently the ANZ Bank) in Main Street. Records show that the idea for a public clock was championed by Borough Councillor Thomas Clyma who, in 1939, managed to raise sufficient money from public subscription for one to be built. The resulting modern-style, electric-powered clock was officially CENTRAL LIBRARY HOURS

The Centennial Clock remained a wellknown Main Street fixture for the next few decades. However, what happened to it after the old ANZ bank building was pulled down in 1978 remains unclear. If you have any information about the clock’s fate, or any memories about it you’d like to share with us, we’d love to hear from you! Just email archives@ uhcc.govt.nz or contact Reid or Lauren at the Library. www.uhcl.recollect.co.nz

Unfortunately the outbreak of WWII, along with technical difficulties attaching the clock to its original intended location on the Post Office building, led to it being confined to storage for several years. Eventually arrangements were made for the publicly owned clock to be attached to a private building, the Bank of Australasia, and it was finally erected in December 1946.
