My experience at UH Mānoa opened doors for me professionally. The journalism department faculty and staff are all very supportive and always recommended opportunities for me to expand my portfolio. I’m also thankful to the campus newspaper, Ka Leo, for being the platform that allows student journalists to explore and grow. All of those experiences led me to a job in the field before graduation.”

My time at UH will always be special to me. Sometimes I have to pinch myself to believe I was actually able to not only experience it but excel there. One thing that I loved the most about the UH campus and culture is that unlike other schools, the makeup of the student population was effortlessly multi-cultural from top to bottom, faculty, staff, and students.”
JADE VORSTER BA, Chemistry, UH Manoa, 2014 Boca Raton, FL
I knew that I would have the support and resources to achieve greatness both academically and athletically at UH, but it was the ability to do so in a humble, down-to-earth environment that made UH so unique. That is why I ultimately chose UH. When I first visited UH, I knew it felt like family.” After earning her pre-medical degree from UH, former Wahine Volleyball player Jade Vorster went on to Liberty University where she received her master’s degree in public health. She then went on to medical school at Florida Atlantic University. In 2017, she was commissioned as an Officer in the United States Navy Reserves under the Health Professions Scholarship Program. To be surrounded by such a diverse community and lifestyle is very special and unique to Mānoa – and this is exactly what I was looking for. I’ve been away from home for over a decade now and I realize how fortunate I am to have been able to attend Mānoa and spend almost 10 years in Honolulu. These formative years really shaped who I am today.”
CHRISTOPHER NGUYEN Program Manager at Microsoft BA Information & Computer Sciences, UH Manoa, 2018 San Jose, California
What I valued most about my time at UH was the diverse groups of people that I have met throughout my college journey. In comparison to other universities, UH Mānoa does have a lot of general education requirements for graduation. I took this opportunity to take fun classes and meet new people from different backgrounds and majors—Some whom I am still close friends with today.” After graduating from UH Manoa in 2018, Christopher spent two years at IBM as a Software Developer for Watson Studio, a Data Science toolkit on the IBM Cloud. He is currently a Program Manager at Microsoft with the mission of empowering all students with an equal opportunity to learn Computer Science.

Being born and raised in Pennsylvania made me crave a new experience that would make me grow as a person and expose me to more of the world. Ten years later, I am still here, growing my career in environmental advocacy and connecting deeply with my friends and community on O‘ahu.” Doorae Shin has roots in environmental activism at UH where she, in conjunction with the Surfrider Foundation, gathered signatures to ban styrofoam food packaging at any of the ten UH campus dining locations.
