Although transportation is recognized as one of the primary sources of revenue in Hawaiʻi’s visitor sector, it also accounts for about a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions and is a large contributor to our reliance on imported fuel. According to Governor David Ige, “Coupled with our sustainable energy goals, hybrid-electric vehicles support a real transition away from dependence on fossil fuels to a cleaner, more renewable energy.” To that end, the Governor has signed into law several bills to adopt clean transportation goals including adopting preferences to rent electric or hybrid vehicles for state employees and transitioning 100% of state agencies’ light-duty vehicles to zeroemission ones by the end of 2035.
Meet Professor Lawrence Martinson who graduated from the UH Maui College AMT program in 2010 and is now an Assistant Professor in the program. As a result of State government action, Martinson anticipates a decisive shift in Hawaiʻi’s automotive industry workforce needs. He leads UHMC students to prepare, diagnose, service, and repair hybrid and electric vehicles (HEVs).
His “Introduction to HEV” class that will be offered Spring/Summer 2023 explores the use of hybrid and electric power for vehicle transportation. The certification course explains the cause of different types of internal combustion engine emissions and why hybrid and electric vehicle technology is critically important at this time. “The program also covers safety when using high voltage, maintenance, drivability, inverter power transfer, battery technologies, hydrogen-electric power, and fuel cell technology. And it details the physics of battery storage, hybrid generation systems, and electric vehicle application. All this is designed to prepare our students for successful careers in the contemporary automotive field,” says Martinson.
