The White Coat Ceremony for the Class of 2024

T

he White Coat Ceremony creates an important focus for students entering medical school. In the presence of family, friends, and faculty, students are welcomed into the medical community by Alumni of the John A. Burns School of Medicine.

Through involvement in this meaningful ritual at the beginning of medical school, students become more aware of their professional responsibilities. The ceremony impresses the primacy of the doctor-patient relationship. It also encourages acceptance of the obligations inherent in the practice of medicine: to be excellent in science; compassionate; and lead lives of uprightness and honor. It emphasizes for students a physician’s responsibility to take care of patients and also to care for patients. The message conveyed is that physicians should care as well as cure. A student’s first white coat, also called “cloaks of compassion,” will display an embroidered emblem of the John A. Burns School of Medicine logo. This logo was commissioned by the Alumni Association for the School’s 25th anniversary. The class members and physicians present will also stand to recite a modified version of the Hippocratic Oath, which is again sworn during graduation at the convocation ceremony. Adapted from THE ARNOLD P. GOLD FOUNDATION The White Coat Ceremony was conceived by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, a public foundation dedicated to fostering humanism in medicine. Students will receive, as a gift from the Foundation, a lapel pin, a golden Mobius loop—which symbolizes the continuous bond of trust, respect and communication that connects healthcare professionals with their patients when humanism is at the core of medical practice. The pins serve as a visual reminder to students that in order to deliver the best care to their patients, compassion and empathy must be the hallmark of their clinical practice. http://www.gold-foundation.org/

Restatement of the Oath of Hippocrates

I

swear by all I hold most sacred and before my family, my teachers, and my peers that to the best of my abilities I will keep this Oath and Stipulation:

To honor all who have taught me this art and in the same spirit and dedication to impart a knowledge of medicine to others. I will continue with diligence to keep abreast of advances in medicine, and respect those who broaden our knowledge by research. I will treat without exception all who seek my ministrations, discriminating against no one, so long as the treatment of others is not compromised thereby, and I will seek the counsel of particularly skilled physicians where indicated for the benefit of my patient. I will remember that caring for the patient will be my primary concern and while doing so I will honor the autonomy of the sick. I will recognize that such caring requires my being available, giving my time generously, communicating honestly, and comforting as well as treating. Such care also involves offering my support to my patients’ loved ones. I will maintain all patient confidentiality and uphold the highest ethical, moral, and behavioral standards for myself and my peers. My behavior will always be honorable, thoughtful, and reflect justice toward all humanity. My fiduciary role will require protecting patients from all forms of malpractice, malfeasance, and unnecessary expenses, and I will try to prevent, as well as, cure disease. While I continue to keep this Oath inviolate, may it be granted to me to enjoy life and the practice of the art and science of medicine; respected by my peers and society. May my faith strengthen my resolve to attain the above. JOHN A. BURNS SCHOOL OF MEDICINE August 9, 1996 rev. 8/98

The Friends of The Medical School exists to support the John A. Burns School of Medicine, the Dean of the Medical School, and the students of JABSOM. The JABSOM Convocation, White Coat Ceremony, and Ohana Day are just a few of the projects that we undertake each year. Every year the Friends create and prints “He alo ā he alo: Aloha Aku, Aloha Mai” or “Face to Face: Care and Compassion From Our Heats”. This booklet is a gift from the Friends of The Medical School to you as you embark on your wonderful journey of becoming a physician. This light booklet is to be carried as a vademecum in the pockets of your white coat. It contains beautiful and inspiring reflections from Sir William Osler, the Father of Modern Medicine, and will keep you company as a faithful and caring friend.

The Friends would like to extend a warm welcome to the newest members of our Hawai`i medical community tonight as they receive their white coats. We hope as you embark on this exciting journey of medical education, you feel the warmth of true friendship supporting you and cheering you ever onward.

Jim S. Burns Community Service Award

The Friends of the Medical School has established The Hon. James S. Burns Award in his name. Awardees will, in the image of Judge Burns, having demonstrated an out-standing and undying dedication to the betterment of the medical school over

their lives. Awardees may be alumni, faculty, or community members whose contributions are of such a magnitude that we have no choice but to bestow upon them this highest award. The Friends chose the White Coat Ceremony to present the awards because Jim Burns, son of the late Governor John A. Burns, for whom the medical school is named, attended virtually every White Coat event to give the ‘Charge’ to the incoming class.
