UH18
Welcome to the launch special of the UH Racing newsletter! 17th June 2015 - University of Hertfordshire, The Forum On 17th June 2015, the team launched UH18 to the world. YouTube and Google Hangouts were used for the live stream of the show, and an audience of over 200 people were present for the unveiling, which was part of the Engineering and Technology Showcase. It was a first for UH Racing to have a live stream, and it was great for those who could not make it to still be able to view the show and enjoy the entertainment. Students’ projects were displayed in The Forum foyer for people to view before the main event. The vast display by both automotive and aerospace engineering students was astounding, and a credit to the University as a whole. This also gave people the chance to network and talk with the students about their innovative designs.. It was great to also see Hertfordshire Food involved with the refreshments, which underpins the university’s collaboration in all of its events.

Once guests had indulged on the refreshments, everyone was welcomed into the main auditorium where
the
stage
was
darkened,
promoting
apprehension in the audience. Upbeat music was played and lights flashed, revealing the outline of the car under the black cover on stage. An announcer welcomed Sebastian Scott onto the stage, where Sebastian outlined the evenings’ events and introduced each guest speaker to the podium. The first guest speaker – the Dean of School, Prof. Reza Sotudeh, gave an explanation of the university’s backing of Formula Student and Engineering, which set the scene for the evening. He also outlined how UH Racing differs from other universities as over 75% of the car is designed
and
manufactured
in-house,
which means the students get more practical experience in addition to their degree. Ross Craig, the team leader of UH18, was then welcomed to the stage. Ross gave an overview of the car and team, and gave great praise to all the team members who have worked so hard to get the car built and ready for competition. Ross explained how testing would commence over the coming weeks prior to competition; driver training would start and many hours of simulator time would be logged between test days.

The next guest to speak at the podium was ex-Formula 1 driver, Arrows F1 team owner and Le Mans winner, Jackie Oliver. Jackie gave an interesting speech about his time when he ran the Arrows Formula 1 team, and how similar the Formula Student experience is. With a wealth of knowledge, Jackie was great to have on stage and the team are all looking forward to seeing him at Silverstone for the UK event. A new endeavour to UH Racing’s launch events, ‘An audience with…’ was a great audienceengaging addition. It allowed a ‘question and answer’ session between Jackie, Ross, and Dr Howard Ash. Howard is UH Racing’s supervisor, and senior lecturer at the University. Questions to the panel were asked both by Sebastian Scott and by the audience.

Questions ranged from in-depth questions about the race car, to easy-to-answer questions such as, ‘how much does the car cost?’. After ‘An audience with…’ ended, the lights faded to black and the video ‘A Day in the Life of Formula Student…’ played - available on our YouTube channel. At the end the video, a heartbeat played and red lights flickered under a smoky atmosphere, displaying the unveiled race car and the team stood alongside it. With over 200 people clapping, the auditorium erupted, whilst under the spotlight was UH Racing’s most prestige looking car. With the team wanting to further develop their knowledge, the car contains a new direction of design for the exhaust, pedal box and inlet manifold—to name a few. All were designed in three students’ Final Year Projects. The livery was developed to incorporate the sleek bodywork, together with placing sponsor stickers to match the curves of the cars body.

After the clapping faded, the photographer was eager to get pictures for the press releases. After quickly organising the team, the all-important snaps were taken, and the team could finally admire their car, in front of the supporting audience in all its glory.
The audience were then welcomed to come up on stage, view the car and ask any questions to the team members. It was a great event to be a part of, and all at UH Racing would like to thank everyone who was involved, who helped us get to where we are today, and who continuously support our Formula Student experience.
