at the campus rec in aquatiics USA Water Polo Championship Tournament The weekend of November 8-10, 2019, the Campus Recreation Center Aquatics area hosted a USA Water Polo Championship Tournament. This 3 day tournament brought 22 water polo teams from all over the country to compete for the championship, they had a male tournament, and a female tournament! We were able to run 2 water polo matches at the same time and had a warmup/cooldown space available as well. It was a long, fun weekend! Cougar Starting Blocks The Aquatics Department is looking forward to hosting many large scale swim meets this season, and just before our first large scale meet of the season, the UH Varsity Women’s swim team Invitational, known as Phil Hansel Invite, we had 8 of our 16 starting blocks resurfaced with a grey background and UH logo. They classed up our competition pool look and we will be shipping off the remaining 8 blocks for resurfacing in anticipation of hosting the Western Athletic Conference Championship meet and the American Athletic Conference Championship meet, both which occur in February.
in Fitness New Programs This year we created several new programs within the Fitness program. Downsizing is a small group which helps people who are struggling with weight loss. We focus on building knowledge and gradually increasing physical activity throughout 8 weeks. Women on Weights was created so that female members could train with free weights and master technique in order to feel

comfortable transitioning to the weight room after completion of 8 weeks. We also implemented a six week Powerlifting course, led by a certified Powerlifting Coach. We provided guidance on technique and progression, leading up to potential involvement in a sanctioned USA Powerlifting Meet. New Equipment This year we invested in an upgrade to our highly used stair climber by expanding our inventory to 6 new Technogym Climbs. We also did an upgrade for some of our older treadmills to a new model with touchscreens, Netflix, and other add-ons. Lastly, we replaced our stationary bikes with a newer model. Texfit 2020 For TexFit 2020, we are sending 5-10 students to the University of TexasArlington for a full day of learning the new fitness trends and interacting with fitness staff from all of the other Texas universities. One of our students will be presenting on the creation and implementation of our Downsizing Small Group Training.
in assessment Whole Student Initiative In pursuit of the development of our student employees beyond where we hire them, furthermore, beyond where we have trained them to excel as an employee we aspire to enhance our employees holistically. We aim to do this by providing growth opportunities in all eight dimensions of wellness throughout the academic terms in accordance with NIRSA best practices. Which should ultimately generate a more robust student that is prepared to handle life circumstances within and outside of their employment at campus recreation. Leadership Academy Seven week long program that focuses on the intentional development of leadership and supervision competencies for our building supervisors and head guards to get them on the same page philosophically and intentionally work towards the betterment of themselves, those they supervise, and ultimately the Department of Campus Recreation.

“I came in as a hard-nosed coach, everything by the book… and over time we learned together that different people do different things different ways. We’ve grown together. Not only did [they] affect my volleyball life, but [they] affected my professional life. As a boss, I had to learn to talk to people. In talking to [the team] and learning that different people do different things different ways, it also affected my job. I became a better boss. We learned from each other.”
