growing through
covid-19 2020 Along with the rest of the university, we had to suspend in-person workouts due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With the thoughts of the community’s wellbeing in mind, we decided to go virtual with some of our programs and services. Our staff was able to successfully provide virtual workouts, group fitness classes, outdoor adventure demos and many more as we waited to safely reopen. During the time leading up to our reopening it became very clear that not only do we need to provide high quality service, but we also needed to keep everyone safe while following all guidelines, policies, and procedures. Our approach to reopening included modifying operational hours, installing additional safety equipment, and establing several contactless processes. To accomplish the goals of being safe, our department developed a reopening plan that adhered to university and state, CDC guidleines in additon to other accrediting organizations. Firstly, we instituted several guidelines and expectations for all patrons and students workers to follow which included wearing face coverings at all times, practicing good hygiene practices, and online transaction. We also repurposed activity spaces to ensure they aligned with social distancing guidelines in addition to increasing our cleaning procedures for all touch points. On August 10, we put all our plans into action and opened with 25% capacity. To ensure we adhered with the capacity guidelines, students were required to make online reservations. While we were going through these changes, we also grew through them. Nina Scott, a

student, mentioned “when they were making appointments it was more of a process than I anticipated it to be, but I was grateful for it”. We streamlined the process and we are proud to say we no longer have to continue reservations because of shared responsibility and safety practices. Lastly, we developed a virtual online training to help streamline the process of teaching our student workers what “The Rec” would look like from now on. The training started with the new safety and risk management requirements such as responding to an emergency as well as all facility and program modifictaions. Each student employee was provided with a blended learning session of all policy changes, and Emergency Action Plan updates to prepare them for our long awaited reopening. With all the training and procedures in place we could only ensure that to the best of our ability, our patrons felt safe and comfortable. James Tran, a sophomore optometry student, expressed his delight with the staff’s diligence in making sure our facility and equipment is clean and safe. Our department has been very fortunate in that we have been able to gradually provide more activities and open several more activity spaces over the progression of this semester. What a major accomplishment! With the help of our student and professional staff, we have been successful in remaining open for the entire fall semster and look forward to doing so in Spring 2021 as well.

Campus Recreation is getting GREENER! As presented by the Office of Sustainability, UH’s Green Office Program aims to encourage us to examine our office environments. Office environments in general are major consumers of energy and materials, and significant contributors to our waste stream. The Green Office Program has challenged offices and departments across campus to be champions of our university’s sustainability. Under the direction of our Sustainability Committee, the Department of Campus Recreation went “green” and enacted several practices to make our office areas more sustainable! After a full audit by the Office of Sustainability we were honored to be certified at the Bronze Level in Fall 2019! To ensure we remain sustainable, we have done our due diligence and enacted more practices to keep progressing forward! Recently we have added several plants to our office and work space as well as signs by all light switches in the facility as reminders to turn off the lights if they are not in use.

Engaging UH students and community during COVID-19 Although COVID-19 put a damper on the end of the spring semester, we did not let that change our commitment to providing programs and services to our UH community. This fall semester, we offered several activities for students and community members to connect and engage with us. OUTDOOR ADVENTURES Our Outdoor Adventure
program offered four locals trips with activities varying from standup paddleboarding to mountain biking, canoeing, and kayaking. Each local trip included instruction and gear with our trained trip leaders to lead the way. Our team also created four outdoor resource guides for anyone eager to explore and plan their own adventure. The resource guides include local, state, national parks, so check them out here bit.ly/UHOutdoorAdventure! FITNESS PROGRAM Our Fitness program started virtual programming shortly after the
pandemic ensued and has yet to skip a beat ever since. The fitness team and several group fitness instructors and personal trainers developed a plan to offer each program hybrid. Our virtual group fitness classes occur weekly via zoom and in-person; please check out the monthly schedule on this link bit.ly/UHGroupFit! In addition to these hybrid programs, we successfully partner with several dorms to provide Spooky Spin and Sunset Yoga classes for all Coogs on campus. We have also completely shifted our certification training courses online for all students interested in becoming an ACE certified instructor or personal trainer. REC SPORTS & FAMILY PROGRAMS Due to the
safety and health guidelines under COVID-19, several of our clubs and intramural sports in-person activities were put on hold this spring semester. Our Rec Sports team worked hard to put together a new and exciting schedule of in-person tournaments ranging from yard games to skills competitions, Esports, and even a few fitness challenges along the way. Unfortunately, our sports clubs were unable to travel and compete, but some could continue their practice schedule here in the facility.

“Before I started working out at UH Rec center, I just remember sleeping all day. I would sleep, study, eat and just feel miserable. Only when I took that leap to attempt to work out at the Rec did I really find myself enjoying college. I felt my mental health improving and my physical wellbeing and I gained the strength to take all my tests that were in difficult classes head on!” “Campus Recreation has been a hallmark in my University Lifestyle since undergrad. When I chose to go to Houston for grad school, one of the deciding factors was the gym. It definitely helps with mental health.” - NASPA Benchmark Consortium 2020

staff recognition Every year the Division of Student Affairs & Enrollment Services conducts an awards ceremony to honor and recognize professional and student staff members from 30 departments for the exemplary work within their respective department. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the division chose to hold a virtual awards ceremony rather than the banquet. For the 2019-2020 school year, over 400 full-time staff across our division participated, and our professional and student staff members were 14 of the 94 nominations submitted this year! We want to say congrats to staff members from our very own department on their well-deserved recognition! Cody Rickards, Norma Lara Cisneros, & Joseph Secrest were explicitly chosen by the awards committee to be recipients of such prestigious awards. Cody Rickards was awarded the DSAES Student Employee Award of Excellence! Cody received this award as a student employee who demonstrates strengths in UH Campus Recreation and has made a positive impact on behalf of the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Services. As one of the Building Supervisors on our Operations team, Cody exemplifies the model Campus Recreation employee by providing quality customer service, exhibiting a positive attitude, and an unrelenting dedication to this department. Adding to his accomplishments, Cody was the recipient of the Campus Recreation Departmental Employee of the Year Award at the end of year banquet in May 2020. His involvement ranges from hours of volunteering for projects and committees including the Student Leadership Council, attending the NIRSA Region IV Student Lead-On and Conference, and Job Fairs. An area where Cody has taken an extreme interest and been instrumental in the Departmental New Hire Orientation. Dan Belcher, A.D. Operations states “What impressed me the most about him is his strong work ethic, passion, dedication, and enthusiasm for the department.” Cody has been a part of every single session where he has lead presentations, taken ownership of the Facility Tour Session by updating the review game involving policies as well as coordinating volunteers and updating the Amazing Race each semester, both initiatives he has taken upon himself because he recognized a need. Cody is a great motivator and educator. He has consistently incentivized the operation staff by bringing breakfast for the opening shift or handing out gift cards in meetings for those that pick-up shifts at the last minute. During Cody’s shifts, he utilizes departmental resources to quiz staff on their knowledge of facility policies/procedures and emergency action plans to keep them abreast of information. Cody is wellknown by everyone on the staff and patrons alike, and we can assure everything is running smoothly while Cody on a shift. Cody sums up his feelings about being recognized when he stated “In my mind, I firmly believe that you do not measure life by 10

how many awards you win but in fact, by how many lives you change. Winning these awards is great but the opportunities to help make a positive impact on someone’s day are priceless and overshadows everything.” Congrats to Norma on being recognized with the DSAES Diversity and Inclusion Award! Norma received this award because she promotes the acceptance and celebration of differences and builds an environment of inclusivity and a culture of respect where others can engage, learn, teach, and develop cultural competence. As one of the CoChairs of Campus Recreation’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee, Norma champions our team forward with initiatives, programs, and services to provide an inclusive environment for our staff, students, and fellow members the UH community. Congrats to Joseph Secrest on being recognized with the DSAES Student Success Award! Joseph received this award for his leadership in developing a dynamic and diverse culture that facilitates learning and engages students. Joseph has transformed and nurtured our students into the leaders of our community and beyond. Joseph tirelessly cares about student success because he understands that isn’t just a statistic used to describe GPA’s, retention rates, or even persistence. Student Success is about the student as a whole and about who they are as a person and citizen. We are so proud of our staff for their excellent work as a part of Campus Recreation and the Division of Student Affairs & Enrollment Services! Keep up the great work!

where are they now? Taija Edwards Operations 2019 “My favorite event will always be Cat’s Back and the Movie by the pool event for the Weeks or Welcome. It was so much fun to just chill by the poolside and watch a movie! It was my freshman year and I was able to meet a lot of friends that I still keep in touch with now.” Since graduation, Taija has been working in kickboxing studio and focusing her efforts in training for the Olympics in Tae Kwon Do. She also hopes to have her own martial arts studio in the near future.
Danielle Bunch Welcome Desk, 2012 “My most memorable moments are the friendships! So many of the people I worked the morning shifts and late Sunday nights, are people I regularly keep in touch with today.” She lived and worked in Houston as a teacher and actor since earning her BFA in theatre. She performed for The Houston Grand Opera, Mildred’s Umbrella Theatre Company, Obsidian Theatre and more. Danielle moved to San Diego in 2019, where she teaches English and theater, continues to act, and is enrolled in grad school online at Drexel University. Courtney Brown Administration, 2014 “The Rec was a great place to work everyday after class. I loved the atmosphere, and the people. I could see my friends everyday and even just hang out when I wasn’t on the clock. The Rec allowed me to work around my class schedule, so I always had the ability to balance work, class, study, and free time with friends.” Graduating medical school and working with the NFL/NBA/MLB will be Courtney’s next great adventure.
Cassie Monard Head Lifeguard, 2016 “It’s hard to say my most memorable moment while working at the UH rec center but some of them are spring banquet where we could spend our rec bucks and dance all night, when I got to lifeguard Olympic diver Tom Daley, and when I got to scare UH students in the 3rd floor haunted house on Halloween. Looking back, working at the UH rec center (especially as a lifeguard) was so much fun. ” Cassie is currently living in Florida, soaking up the sun and continuing to learn more about her career as a nutritionist. She has enjoyed traveling here and there, and has even been back to see friends in Houston. Next adventure is Colorado, because she wants to move away from the Florida heat to some cool mountain air!
Nia Bills Marketing 2017 “Most memorable moments were Cats Back and taking Zumba classes. Cats Back is a great way to get more information about the different organizations that UH has to offer. Also, the Zumba classes were always filled with energy and fun dance moves that gave you a great workout! Thank you UH Campus Recreation for the memories and wonderful experiences I shared with friends.” After getting married and traveling the world, she recently expanded her family and lives a fabulous life in Katy, TX.

She has recently moved back home to Dallas to start her new career as a pelvic health physical therapist.
Erick Mata Head Lifeguard, Life Guard Instuctor, Aquatic Student Leader and Marketing, 2018 “I will not forget the many students staff that I met along my journey with campus recreation and my aquatic family. I enjoyed the many cook outs and pot lucks which brought us together even closer. The heart breaking moments were watching my staff friends graduate and move on from aquatics to the real world and knowing that one day I would have to leave my second home which I called the recreation center.” “I will not forget that I met my now wife while working in Aquatics. Maria came into my life unexpectedly when she joined the aquatic team. I could not have asked for a better timing because she always brightened up my day and she still does. If it was not for campus recreation, I would not have my the love of my life and I thank you for that.” Erick works for Wise Information Technology AutoAction in sales and marketing. He was offered his current full-time position while he was working on the companys’ rebranding campaign. They liked his creativity and way of thinking so much that they extended an offer which he accepted. Erick and Maria planned on going to Germany to spend time with her family this summer but due to COVID-19, plans have been rescheduled. They’ve vacationed in Vienna, Austria where they embraced the culture and history.

Emily Chiang Intramural Sports, 2017 “My most memorable moment were in Intramurals— both playing and supervising. Playing and being a part of an intramural team allowed me to meet so many different people in a fun environment. I’m competitive and I love playing sports, so being able to meet other people with the same traits was fun and exciting. Being a part of the intramural supervising team allowed me to learn crowd control and leadership skills that I still use to this day. ” Emily plans on pursuing a masters and furthering her career within higher education as well as traveling and getting to explore the world while she still can.
Victor Tran Fitness, 2018 “I enjoyed connecting with others outside of the rec with common interests and goals. I am still around helping the lifting community. I wanted to give back and not regret moving forward without doing so. ” Victor wishes to apply to graduate school when he is ready.
Adrian Dever Operations, 2016 “I thoroughly enjoyed the two days of training right before fall semester began. It was a great chance to meet and bond with other people who work at the Rec Center. You’ll be surprised to know how much you have in common with people from all walks of life. To this day, I’m still close friends with people that I met on the first day of training.” Since graduating from UH, he landed a great job in downtown Houston with a renewable energy company. He loves to travel whenever he can, whether for business or pleasure, but calls Houston home. Adrian planned a trip back to Europe this fall where he would have each day planned (his significant other hates that), due to the pandemic the trip have been rescheduled. He also is studying for the GMAT in order to pursue a MBA. We hope to see him back on campus soon. Rec Success

having representation Chris Porras our Operations Graduate Assistant was a presidential appiontee to the Student Fee Advisor Committee (SFAC) by our univeristy President and Vice Chancellor. Chris was nominated by one of his professors and interviewed with Dr. Walker before being place on the advisory commitee. Chris has the ability now to to have an impact at a university level with over 47,000 students enrolled during a pandemic that has forced the evolution of how we communicate, educate, and engage with the University of Houston students. Chris is a contributing advocate for his community (Latinx, graduate student, non-traditional student, higher education majors, Campus Recreation professional). He is constanly searching for ways to be apart of the bigger picture. This is exactly what our vision means when we talk of students leading intiatives and having high level input on how our university operates financially. SFAC plays a very important role, making recommendations on behalf of all students at the University of Houston. Their recommendations directly affect campus life and the futures of many departments and programs. This commitee has the abilty to drive intiatives and programs that may not normally be funded towards the success of our students and has direct ties to all 6 of Campus Recreation values. Way to go Chris!
I am because we are Two of our professional staff took the initiative to gain a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT 200) certfication. Our Fitness Coordinator Courtney Rorex, expressed that she “wanted to take steps to slow down in an ever evolving industry “ which helped her to shift her focus especially during the chaos of a pandemic. Our Assitant Director of Aquatics Cara Green, mentions how she regularly enjoyed yoga class and decided to take her journey a step further to “share with others the importance of a well-being journey”. Since obtaining the certification, Cara took her yoga enthusiasm to the next level and taught several free virtual Yoga group fitness classes. Cara’s class combines the practices of meditation and asanas to help patrons calm and center their mind. Courtney will share her skills and practices through a new addition to our Small Group Training facets. Courtney’s six week Progressive Yoga workshop will improve the mind-body connection by learning the basics of yoga. Increasing your level of fitness is one thing but tapping in to the mind body connection is different all together, Courtney and Cara both found this to be especially important all in the middle of a global health crisis.

crwc roof and Building envelop!
The Campus Recreation and Wellness Center is getting a new top hat and a complete envelope seal around the entire building. With 103 rainy days in 2019, the roof project has been a long-awaited concern for students. Campus Recreation’s final stage of the approval process to begin construction started in November. Once the project is completed in May 2021, students will have 28% more court time for open play and/or activities. NO MORE canceled intramural sports activities, open rec games, or sports club practices. YAY! #fixtheroof
Gertner Field The gravel parking lot at Gertner will be undergoing construction to return it into a field starting 2021. Another long awaited project, this return to field space will allow additional club sports to bring their practices and competitions back to campus, and will provide more space for intramural sports programming. Lighting will be included in this project to maximize the opportunities on this field..
