Sports Whether you want to keep fit, meet new people, take part in your favourite sport or play competitively, there are plenty of sports clubs to choose from in Huddersfield. There are also clubs at the Oldham and Barnsley campuses and there will be even more starting up during the year. Football, rugby and netball represent some of the traditional sporting clubs on offer, but have you ever thought about trying hurling or tae kwon do? If you are reading this, you are probably new to Uni life, and have only been studying here for a few days. Having left family, friends and familiar faces back home, you might be feeling a little lonely. A great way to overcome this is to join a sports club! Choose from over 25 clubs and meet a varied range of people. More than just meeting new friends in a chilled atmosphere, they can help you develop new skills, especially if you take on a committee role. Having a go at something new is a great way to add a line to your CV and make you stand out from the crowd.

This year we’re also starting some intramural sport, so if you and some friends from your hall or course want to get together and form a team, we can get you playing other similar teams in a series of leagues and competitions for students and staff wishing to play sport at a recreational level. This guide will help you decide which activity is best for you. Why not try them all?! Check online at www.huddersfieldstudent.com for full sports club listings for each campus, and intra-mural activities, plus contact details.
SPOTLIGHT on Mens Football The 2008/09 season saw the 1st team reach the quarter final of the BUCS Cup, only to be knocked out on a penalty shootout against local rivals Leeds Met. The 2nd team saw the league title snatched away from them on goal difference.

Societies Coming to University has never been about just gaining a degree, and if you thought that three years of lectures and essays meant giving up your favourite hobby or pastime then think again! The Students’ Union has many societies which cater for students with political, sporting, religious and cultural interests. Whether you want to hang out in rock clubs, campaign for the rights of others or pursue conservation issues, then you’ve landed in the right place! From meditation to music, skateboarding to online gaming, the potential is only limited to your imagination! Getting involved with societies is also a great way to learn new skills. Extra strings to your bow, such as joining clubs and taking active roles such as chair and treasurer, are just the thing that employers look for, so take advantage of the opportunities and training available.

SPOTLIGHT on MEDIEVAL RE-ENACTMENT For students wanting to try something a little out of the ordinary, the Medieval Re-enactment Society provides just that. If you fancy donning armour and marching onto a battlefield, or sleeping in a castle for the weekend, they are the Society to join! Their activities include re-enacting all aspects of late fifteenth century life; from activities such as spinning, weaving and authentic cooking, to learning to fight with a sword, pole arm or bow whilst taking part in battle re-enactment. Joining the Medieval Re-enactment Society means a chance to meet hundreds of other people in the re-enactment scene, learn something new and become involved in a great social crowd. With sword-training on Tuesday evenings, polearm training on Wedneday and Sunday with nights out, you can gain the skills ready for the re-enactment events over the summer months. Events include weekends of battle re-enactment and living history in a huge range of castles, heritage sites and battlefields. You’ll find us online or at the Freshers’ Fayre!

Volunteering Gone are the days when volunteering just meant helping out in a charity shop. Volunteering is a great way to help you gain the skills you need to get ahead in the workplace, and more importantly help other people. Boost your CV, get some much needed experience, and give something back, all at the same time. You can choose to volunteer for a day at a one-off event, maybe just to see what it’s like, or for a few hours a week as a break from study, then if those idle summer months are too much to bear, you can volunteer full-time. It’s a great way of trying something new, be constructive, adding skills to your CV, and doing something worthwhile. Most organisations which involve volunteers offer training, so you don’t need to have any qualifications to become a volunteer – just loads of enthusiasm.
96%
of volunteers say that volunteering has provided them with extra skills for life.

“Put aside preconceptions: volunteering is work experience with the added possibility that the act of choosing to be a volunteer can show even greater initiative and commitment" Mark Killingley, Senior Manager, HSBC Bank
OK, so you want to have a go. The first step is deciding which area of volunteering you want to try. A list of upand-coming opportunities are posted on the volunteering notice board in the iZone, on the first floor of the Students’ Union, or you can check online at www.huddersfieldstudent.com/izone for updates.
Spotlight on Louise Taylor: Louise volunteered this year on the READ book project, collecting GCSE textbooks from high schools over here to be distributed to schools in Tanzania (where they have the same curriculum). The project was a tough one, with volunteers working really hard to raise money, pick up the books, and get these boxed up for shipping over to Africa. Louise was lucky enough to continue with the project over to Tanzania, where she would visit the schools where the books would make a difference. Shortly before going, Louise said “the project has been
fantastic for me, I've really enjoyed all the time and effort we've put into it knowing the end result will be more than worth it”

Varsity The Huddersfield vs. Bradford Varsity is an ever-growing event. Each year sees more people and a greater range of sports taking part meaning that it’s become a day to look forward to in the student calendar. It’s a great day of banter and competitive sport with a few cold beverages enjoyed to help wash down the entertainment. This year saw Huddersfield draw the overall Varsity. It was a fun-packed day played out in beautiful sunshine in Huddersfield at the sports hall and Lockwood Park. However, for the first time in a number of years, the Rugby Union team were not victorious, meaning that the newly bought Varsity cup now languishes in Bradford. This will not be allowed to happen again! With your help, by joining a team or coming to cheer on your fellow students, we can bring Varsity Victories back to Huddersfield. Your support will be even more important this year with Bradford hosting us. Matches will be held in March 2010, so make sure you get your ticket and don’t miss a treat. Look out for more details online at www.huddersfieldstudent.com.

Spotlight on Alton Towers... Claire gives her report “What a fantastic trip!! Alton Towers, Wednesday 10 June 2009 so popular that 2 coach loads of us went. We got there in super quick time and hit Oblivion straight away; I screamed a lot but loved it! We did all the biggies – Rita, Nemesis, Air and even had time for the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ride which definitely helped me feel 10 again! We spent the day being drenched, spun, flipped and twisted in every direction you can think of. It was fantastic, and great value for money - roll on next year’s trip!”

Do your own thing! If you’ve got a passion or a quirky hobby and there’s no club or society here at Huddersfield yet, then why not create one of your own?! Gather a few friends and jot down some ideas. Haydn Stead, the Vice President Sports & Societies will clarify whether your project can be supported, materially and / or financially, by the Students’ Union. All projects are important, so don’t be afraid to ask for help with your idea. Once you’ve got that idea and some like-minded supporters, it’s really easy to get started.
Spotlight on Ultimate Frisbee Ultimate Frisbee is a new and exciting sport, being played all over the World from amateur to international level. Created as a hybrid of many sports, predominantly Netball and American Football, it involves throwing a flying disc between team members to score a point in the opposition’s end zone. As a sport that not many people here know about at an early age, most people get involved at Universities, where teams play each other across the country in small tournaments.
iZone handbook Activate inside pages 09.09_Activate 03/09/2009 09:21 Page 13
There are also regional teams and also teams set up by individuals, who also host tournaments for other teams to go and participate in. The basic rules are quite simple, although they do get more complicated once tactics and proper offensive/defensive plays are used. Student Rob Allen has got on board and set up a club at the Union. He saw that there are loads of campuses that already have the sport and that it appeals to all sorts of people. The Ultimate Frisbee members, to begin with, will meet on quite a casual basis with training and small games amongst members. The plan is, with enough interest and practice, the team could then develop and take part in competitive tournaments against other Universities and teams. Rob says “I first became interested in the sport when a friend of mine introduced it to me, after he had joined his University team. I fell in love with it straight away, as he taught me all kinds of ways to throw the disc and effective ways of scoring points. Playing the sport is a great way to keep fit and have fun at the same time, and there is always the opportunity to play in competitive games as well. Find out more at www.huddersfieldstudent.com

The ‘Huddersfield Student’ is the official publication for students at the University of Huddersfield. It’s a free newspaper published monthly during term time, covering student life - everything from news, music and film reviews, to student sporting, society and volunteering achievements. If you want experience in journalism, Huddersfield Student is the ideal place to start. Every part of the production is student-led, from the newspaper team, to anyone from the University who has the passion to see their words in print. Whether you want to write a one-off article or be a regular contributor with a section of your own, your input is always welcome. If you think there is something missing, from content, photography, design or layout, then why not have a go at creating it yourself? The newspaper uses industry standard design packages (Quark and Adobe Creative Suite) on big shiny Apple Macs. Training is available for anyone wanting to take part.
