METAL STOOLEN #1062 A metal version of Uhuru’s signature piece, the Metal Stoolen was created in the same vein, using scraps of steel from Brooklyn area metal shops. Bundled together haphazardly and encased in a ring of longer pieces, the hollow ends of metal form the object’s top. This produces a dynamic pattern filled with highly charged empty space. The effect is like a photonegative of the original Stoolen. The eye-catching powder coating adds to the piece’s sculptural quality and highlights the tension between positive and negative space.

16/45 END TABLE #1099

The 16/45 End Tables vary in size, each referencing the colossal diameter and calibre of the shells that were onboard the USS North Carolina. The tapered shape of the table supports took subtle cues from the battleship itself. The lightness of the base is a direct contrast to the solid shells. Crafted out of either teak or cold-rolled steel, the tables support black glass and are available in three heights.

Standard sizes

The War Craft Line is built from reclaimed teak from the deck of the decommissioned USS North Carolina. The battleship was built in the 1930’s in the Brooklyn Navy Yard and served in World War II. Decommissioned in 1947, it is to date one of the most decorated battleships in US naval history. Its sleek, uncluttered design set a new precedent for all future ships. By exploring and referencing the forms of the battleship, the pieces create a dialog between honoring those lost during its various campaigns and exploring the inherently violent nature of modern war craft.

WAR CRAFT COFFEE TABLE WEARING DAZZLE #1096 The War Craft Coffee Table wears an interpretation of Dazzle camouflage that was used on battleships to confuse enemy ships. Through high contrast and disrupted lines, Uhuru graphically breaks up the pattern for a functional coffee table. The levels represent the decks of the battleship, with framework inspired by nautical forms. The top is layered paint on aluminum, and the base consists of solid wood legs. The War Craft Line is built from reclaimed teak from the deck of the decommissioned USS North Carolina. The battleship was built in the 1930’s in the Brooklyn Navy Yard and served in World War II. BB-55 ROCKER #1097 The sturdy shape of the BB-55 Rocker, named after the North Carolina class of battleship, takes cues from naval design. The forms of the base and seat mimic the curves of the hull and the taper of the bridge tower. The teak base of this low, modern rocker transitions into a steel frame above. Cotton webbing, weaved in a random pattern, forms the seat and backrest. With colors inspired by the original ship, the fractal pattern also references Measure 32 camouflage, which was used on the ship to avoid detection when traveling through open water.

MARK-8 ROOM DIVIDER #1098 The aluminum frame of the Mark-8 Room Divider is shaped with the life-sized negative silhouette of the shells that were fired from the ship. It gives a sense of scale to the massive and destructive weapons onboard. The battleship-grey powder coating is offset with subtle brass screws and hinges. Flexible enough to be used as a room divider or mirror, this thoughtful piece aims to bring a palpable sense of scale to the viewer. CYCLONE LOUNGER #1091 The Cyclone rollercoaster is one of Coney Island’s last remaining functional rides. It is resurrected here in the form of a lounge chair, with undulating dark and light Ipe and a crisp white laser-cut metal base. Uhuru plays off the organized chaos of the ride’s structure, flattened to one layer of metal, and with the sides connected sporadically to create a dynamic interchange of space and void on the base. The metal is finished with a low-VOC powder coat finish. The Coney Island Line is crafted from reclaimed wood taken from the demolished iconic boardwalk. The Ipe wood, first installed on the boardwalk in the late 1940’s, has weathered in the sun, salt and snow for 70 years. The design is inspired by the duality of Coney Island—its whimsical, colorful summers and melancholy winters. The pieces interpret the architecture of the desolate dreamscape: low-rise buildings patched with signs and seasonal layers of paint, beneath the towering old-fashioned rollercoaster.

DROP END TABLE #1092 The Parachute Jump, a historical landmark punctuating the panorama of Coney Island, influenced the design of this end table. Once part of the World’s Fair, the now defunct ride looms over the rest of the park. Uhuru captures its essence through mechanical connections on a steel base, crowned with a faceted Ipe top.

WONDER COFFEE TABLE #1095 This coffee table pieces together wedges of Ipe into a large wheel, bolted in place with a steel plate. The stylized metal base uses a Vaudeville-inspired scalloped pattern, held in place with steel flanges. This overtly industrial piece looks like it could have been part of a ride itself: spinning on an open ball bearing, the table combines function and whimsy. BOARDWALK CONSOLE #1090 The reclaimed wood surface of our console echoes the inlaid pattern of the original boardwalk, as seen from above. The play of scale however, from the miniature nail-heads to the thinly cut Ipe, changes the context of the original design and adds an element of surprise. The wood sits atop a blackened steel base.

IRIS COFFEE TABLE #1042 The Iris Coffee Table is constructed from reclaimed bourbon barrel staves and 1" x 1" blackened or powder coated steel tubing. The K端pe line is crafted from used bourbon barrels from Bardstown, Kentucky, the Bourbon Capital of the world. The barrels were constructed from white oak and were charred on the inside to produce the unique flavor and color of the liquor. These barrels are only used one time to age bourbon, after which some are sold and shipped to Scotland to make scotch. Unfortunately, the rest are often discarded. Uhuru began by dismantling the barrels into their individual pieces: staves, metal bands, and circular heads. We explored how these parts can work together to create simple functional designs while retaining the individual characteristics and natural colors of the aged wood from the original barrels, thus creating a new vernacular.

BOARDWALK DINING TABLE #2005 The Boardwalk Dining Table uses reclaimed ipe from the Coney Island boardwalk with a robust blackened steel base. The dynamic pattern emulates the iconic layout of the boardwalk. The ipe wood, first installed in the late 1940's, has weathered in the sun, salt, and snow for 70 years. Uhuru restored the original beauty of the wood, and in the process uncovered a warm array of tones that is unique to each table.

Furniture that has been passed down through generations has an endearing broken-in look. BEAM LINE #1020 The Beam Coffee Table is two 12" x 12" antique pine beams held together with two inset walnut feet and three walnut splines. It is finished to a smooth shine, yet retains the scars of its past, including nail holes and iron stains. The Beam line is created from timber that comes from the beams, joists and support columns salvaged from buildings being renovated or demolished in the city. Based on the age of the buildings, the wood is often first growth heart pine, from trees that were three or four hundred years old when they were cut. This wood came from the vastly dense forests that covered the Northeast when New York was settled. Since these trees were competing for sunlight, the growth rings are very close together, which produced an incredibly dense, stable and beautifully grained wood. Grain, color and natural characteristics will be different with every beam, making each piece unique. We have a regularly changing inventory of sizes and species. Contact us for options.

STRAP END TABLE #2007 The Strap End Table is a reference to school days past. Stacked sections of reclaimed antique pine are held in place by thick strips of leather, like belts cinching a pile of textbooks. Algebra and history are re-envisioned in the pine beams, reclaimed from heavy timber factory buildings in New York City. The hand-dyed vegetable tanned leather is inset into the rough wood, deliberately juxtaposing the two textures. The laser cut steel base holds the bands mechanically in place, providing a sturdy and innovative place to rest your latest read.

FENCED-IN TABLE #1017 The Fenced-In coffee table is made from repurposed cast-iron fence pieces in a traditional Art Deco repeat design. STRIPER LINE #1080

The Striper Line is made from thin strips of salvaged wood that are fit together, sanded, and hand-finished. The distinctive striped surface—which is left uneven on its underside, creating a striking silhouette—is then mounted on a slender 1/2" steel frame. Local workshops in Brooklyn produce scraps of fine hardwood that end up discarted because they are seemingly too small to use in furniture production. Seeing a design opportunity where others see waste, Uhuru is committed to collecting these scraps and inventing new ways of using them.

DK STEEL CHAIR & OTTOMAN #1005 The DK set is inspired by the traditional Danish modern lounge chair. The legs of the DK Chair are fashioned from 1" x 2" blackened steel tubing, with the arms a curved black walnut. The sleek leather cushion is inspired by the detailing on motorcycle jackets. A svelte top pad is tethered to a thicker, more traditional cushion, providing streamlined comfort. The extra-wide seat gives flexibility to a chair that, like a motorcycle, might just seat two.

STANDARD CHAIR #1063 Standard Chair is a composition of found chair backs, steel plate, and expanded aluminum. The hand-carved chair backs (which include legs) are new, left unfinished by a local manufacturing company that recently went out of business. To the ornate Louis XVI backs, Uhuru has attached a seat and front legs plasma cut and bent from plate steel; the understated detail along the clean, angular seat subtly echoes the heavy ornamentation of the original chairs. Instead of the overstuffed upholstery the original manufacturer likely had in mind, the oval back is made from aluminum mesh. The Standard Chair was recently added to the Brooklyn Museum of Art's permanent collection.

SAKURA CUBE END TABLE #1096 The Sakura Cube End Table represents the second phase of the Sakura line combining a high gloss lacquer with naturally finished solid wood. OHANA BAR #1050 The Ohana Bar is equally at home in the city or the islands. The design includes a wine rack, overhead channels for hanging stemware, a storage drawer, and a center area for storing liquor bottles. Uhuru designer Jason Horvath conceived the Ohana line during a summer spent exploring the beaches and volcanoes of the Hawaiian Islands. (In the Hawaiian language, “ohana” refers to family.) The rich and dark reclaimed woods— reminiscent of those found throughout the tropics—are imbued with natural warmth that is offset by the coolness of blackened steel.

STOOLEN LAMP #1026 A lamp inspired by the Stoolen, Uhuru’s signature piece. The Stoolen Lamp is created from collected scraps of hardwood from local workshops. The Stoolen lamp features a natural fiber shade and blackened brass hardware that compliments the understated elegance of the base. Use only with compact fluorescent or LED bulb. One of our original designs, and still the most popular, each Stoolen is created from collected scraps of hardwood from local workshops and a found bicycle rim (optional). Bill Hilgendorf’s commitment to sustainability and love of found objects brought this piece to life and defined the term “up-cycling” --- using discarded low value materials to create a high-valued item.
