DEPARTMENT OF CLASSICAL MUSIC AND MUSIC EDUCATION The Department of Classical Music and Music Education educates tomorrow’s classical musicians and music educators. The Department offers bachelor’s and master’s programmes with different specialisations within classical music performance, as well as supplementary studies. We work specifically with the mediation of the classical music tradition, but also educate music teachers and music educators who work with many genres. We aim to prepare our students well to meet the challenges of the future job market. The musicians of tomorrow must be able to facilitate great music experiences, be on a high level as performers, be able to reach different target audiences, develop and lead their own projects, lead ensembles and teach instrumental music. Therefore, we offer study programmes that contain courses in performance, mediation, method and music theory. Our closest cooperation partner is Kilden Performing Arts Centre, Norway’s second-highest producing art and culture institution. Kilden houses Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra, which is one of Norway’s seven professional symphony orchestras and consists of 70 full-time employed musicians. The students’ feedback regarding the cooperation with Kilden is very positive. The cooperation means that the students get a close experience with institutional and performing professions. The Department also performs academic and artistic research activities and we work to have a close relation between research and education.
