IN CASE OF EMERGENCY Norway has three emergency numbers: Medical: 113 Fire: 110 Police: 112 If you need a doctor during regular hours, contact information is available in Fronter and on the website. Just call for an appointment. In the event of any emergency, the University of Agder has a crisis plan that will go into effect. You will find details on the website.

welcome to the university of agder We are very pleased that you have chosen Norway and Agder for your studies. We hope that you will find the information in this booklet helpful during your first weeks at UiA. In addition to the orientation programme, you will find maps and some practical information to help you get used to your new home.

YOUR FIRST DAYS

Semester and examination registration

You will receive all the information you need at orientation for international students on 6 January. This includes procedures for registering with the police, registering for classes, and answers to all of the practical questions you may have. Members of the Erasmus Student Network will introduce you to life in Norway and arrange social events throughout the whole semester, starting on orientation day.

When you arrive, you will receive a semester card. Exchange students are pre-registered and do NOT have to approve an individual education plan. Although you are registered as a student, you are not registered for classes or examinations. You cannot get access to all of your information in Fronter until you have registered for classes and examinations. You have to register for classes and examinations on the StudentWeb by 1 February for spring. A guide is available on the UiA website.

STUDYING AT UIA UiA’s primary information channel is www.uia.no. You will find messages, links to the StudentWeb and Fronter, practical information, examination information, the ECTS course catalogue, schedules, an overview of student associations, and lots of useful links here. Fronter is also used as an information channel by your lecturers, professors and study programme coordinators.

Degree-seeking students are NOT preregistered and have to pay the semester fee and approve their individual education plan. A guide is available on the website. If you miss the deadlines you will not be able to register for exams!

Students are expected to read the information on the web, in Fronter and sent by e-mail. E-mail sent from UiA will go to your UiA e-mail account, not your private e-mail account.

The ECTS course catalogue

Please note that changes to the programme may occur.

The ECTS course catalogue is found here: uia.no/ects. It is a translation of the Norwegian study handbook, and you should find all course descriptions here, as well as a lot of useful practical information. The examination regulations are also included, and students are expected to be familiar with these.

Trenger du hjelp, spør på Servicetorget. Her svares det på spørsmål om blant annet opptak, eksamen og utveksling.

Student card

In addition to your semester card, you will receive a student card. The card will entitle you to borrow books, access buildings, print, copy and scan. You will receive a PIN that you can use to get into certain buildings after closing time. You can also use your student card and semester card to receive special offers for students throughout Norway. To get your student card, you need a valid ID and your semester card. You can get your card in room A1 002 in Kristiansand or the Service Centre in Grimstad.

Residence permits

Students from outside of the EU and EEA should apply for a residence permit BEFORE coming to Norway. Read the information on the Immigration Department’s website, and contact your nearest Norwegian embassy for more information. The application can be downloaded from https://selfservice.udi.no/. Students from the US can also apply in Norway, but we recommend that you apply from home. Students from the EU and EEA do not need residence permits.

EU / EEA students

If you are a student from the EU or EEA, you do NOT need a residence permit before you arrive. You can just register with the police shortly after arrival online: https://selfservice.udi.no/ You will then be asked to go to the police to pick up your permit. Make sure you have photocopies of your insurance or your European Health Card and your letter of acceptance with you when you register. You may also be required to take a test to prove you have been vaccinated for tuberculosis.

We recommend that you do this as soon as possible after arrival. A Fronter course will be offered shortly after arrival.

Erasmus Student Network Agder (agder.esn.no) ESN Agder is a volunteer student organisation which works primarily to improve the exchange students’ stay here in Agder. In addition to the board members, there are many volunteer buddies. Throughout the year ESN arranges trips, parties and other social events. ESN’s main goal is to give international students a semester abroad where they have experienced Kristiansand, Grimstad and other parts of Norway at their best, and made friends for life. ESN also focuses on integration through activities that match Norwegian and international students.

The Student Association of Agder (SIA)

the buddy programme:

The buddy group program worked well, and with that as a support it is easy to find good friends. Because there was an ESN organisation, integration was very easy. They prepared a lot of parties and activities where everyone could come and get to know others.
