From Christine Mary Dunford, Director of the new School of Theatre and Music — The four plays in our season all explore changing identity in one way or another. Theatre and Music at UIC is also on the brink, of the edge, of a wonderful new identity as we be come The School of Theatre and Music. We are thrilled that you are with us to celebrate the work of students, faculty and guest artists during our 2013/2014 launch season. Please revisit us often this year as we continue to provide excellent academic and performance programs that help our talented students discover how theatre and music can be central to their identity, and how a Cloud 9 by Caryl Churchill, Directed by Luigi Salerni foundation in the arts can help them realize their potential in the world.

How far would you go to rescue the one you love? Sarah Ruhl’s inspired Eurydice unabashedly embraces the transformative power of love in her reimagining of the mythical love story of Orpheus and Eurydice from Eurydice’s point of view. I love you. You’re perfect. You’re a girl?! Shakespeare’s sparkling topsy-turvy Twelfth Night celebrates lowbrow bawdiness married to highbrow wit in which mistaken identify, trickery, and romance reign in the mythical land of Illyria. Hey, here’s an idea! Let’s all go live in the ghetto! Spring blooms colorfully with the mesmerizing Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning Clybourne Park by Bruce Norris. Gentrification and perceptions of community highlight an excruciatingly funny and squirm-inducing evocation of the fault line between race and property. And finally, to crown our season with a riveting new voice — What was it like before the future arrived? The world premiere of i wonder if it’s possible to have a love affair that lasts forever or things i found on craigslist by christopher oscar peña, reveals the messiness of our cyber-dominated lives that demand ingenious ways to manage our teetering existence. Our newest season continues our ongoing commitment to provide funny and ferocious performances that marry tradition with innovation, comfort with challenge, and the familiar with the new.
