GLORIA is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., New York. GLORIA was produced by the Vineyard Theatre (Douglas Aibel, Artistic Director; Sarah Stern, Artistic Director; Jennifer Garvey-Blackwell, Executive Producer) New York, Spring 2015

About the Play GLORIA is a dramatic comedy focusing on the lives of working Americans and dynamics in the workplace. The play made its debut Off-Broadway in May 2015 and was a finalist for the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The play takes place in modern-day Manhattan, on a normal work day for a group of aspiring writers who are growing tired of the monotony of their desk jobs. Dean stumbles in hungover from a party at the home of the ‘office freak’, Gloria, the night prior. As the day goes on, everyone goes about their business, though tensions are high with a dispute over who should be allowed to write a story on a deceased singer. Gloria begins to act stranger than usual. Questions on the reasoning behind going postal and workplace toxicity are posed during the play.

About the Director Tyrone Phillips is the founding Artistic Director of Chicago’s Definition Theatre and currently leading a capital campaign for the organization’s new home in Woodlawn. Named one of Newcity’s Players—the 50 leaders of Chicago’s theater, dance, opera and comedy culture of 2020, he is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and has also studied abroad at Shakespeare’s Globe. As a first-generation Jamaican-American, Tyrone is passionate about equity and inclusion in the entertainment industry and has completed advanced anti-racism training to lead change in our community through education. Select directing credits include the critically-acclaimed World Premiere production of Byhalia, Mississippi (Joseph Jefferson Awards nomination for Best Director), Dutchman (Definition Theatre), The MLK Project: The Fight for Civil Rights (Writers Theatre), Dontrell Who Kissed The Sea (Illinois Theatre). UIC Theatre is thrilled to welcome back Tyrone who directed Luck of the Irish during our 2018-19 Theatre Season.

Land Acknowledgment The UIC School of Theatre and Music sits on the traditional

homeland of the original peoples of the area: the Three Fires Confederacy - the Potawatomi, Odawa, and Ojibwe Nations as well as the Menominee and Ho-Chunk who—along with many Indigenous people—were among its first inhabitants. With respect and gratitude, The School of Theatre and Music honors the many Native Americans who have, do, and will call this land their home. STM acknowledges that we have benefited from the repeated attacks on Native Americans that forced tribal representatives to sign the 1816 Treaty of St Louis, relinquishing to the U.S. all claims of the land from Lake Michigan to the Illinois River. This land seizure led to the era of economic development and rapid growth that made Chicago the metropolis that it is today. We have an obligation to our students and the nearly 65,000 Native Americans now living in Chicago to do no further harm, to amplify Native voices, and to fight for equity and inclusion by engaging in anti-racism policies and practices. For us, this work begins with this statement, and must be followed by actions that immediately affect our work and life on campus.
